Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)
If you are like me, sometimes you think about why you are where you are, what will you do while you are there and perhaps most importantly, what others will think of you after you are gone. It's called a legacy ... what you leave behind.
Some people think of a legacy in monetary or tangible measurement, but the greatest legacy we can give is an intangible one and all of us want to know that when we are gone people will remember us fondly and positively.
Last year, the Florida Senate decided to dress up the Senate Office Building with photographs depicting its history and heritage by displaying action photographs of senators who previously served in office and making sure that there was at least one photograph of each senator.
It's been interesting to see these reminders of days gone by, especially for me, as I have been there in one role or another for over forty years and I knew, recognized or served with most of those who got their mug hung on the wall.
There were dozens of photographs and I didn't see mine at first, though several people commented and laughed about my portrait legacy. I just had to find it, so I went on a photo hunt, up one hall and down another searching floor by floor.
Then, as I rounded a corner, I saw my face big as life, seated at the dais behind a microphone, pointing my finger and holding a large bag of ..... marijuana! I remember the day it happened. I was chairing a meeting of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee, of which I was Chairman and wanted to make a point about the proliferation of marijuana in the state, so I asked the police to go to the evidence room and bring a supply for me to use at the meeting. They did and there I am, forever hanging in the state capitol holding a bag of grass!
Years after I am dead and gone school children will tour the capitol and ask: "Who's the guy holding the grass?" I guess that's my enduring legacy from public service.
Have you ever thought about what kind of legacy you will leave, what people will remember you for or say about you after you are dead and gone? Will they know what you believed in or what you stood for?
Jesus told us to let our light shine before men, that they may see our good deeds and praise our Father in heaven. Live you life so that your life may continue to live after you no longer do.
Are you letting your light shine? What wattage of bulb is screwed into the socket of your life?
