Topic: Galatians 5:6
The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. (Galatians 5:6)
Tasks we do, ideas we discuss, thoughts we ponder, events in which we take part are innumerable, but there is only one thing in life that counts, one thing that truly matters.
Faith in God is that key element. But it is not an inactive faith. It is faith that responds with action; faith expressed by love.
As James puts it, "In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by actions, is dead." (James 2:17)
Thus, expressive faith is one in which belief in Jesus for salvation is translated into loving actions toward God and all mankind.
What does faith expressed through love look like?
The best description I have found for faith lived out in love is Jesus' parable of the sheep and the goats at the end of the age. Listen to His description of those who are His sheep.
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me." (Matthew 25:35, 36)
When His followers were confused about when they did these things for Him, the King explains, "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." (Matthew 25:40)
Today, let's express our faith in God by doing these very things for the least and the lonely and the forgotten who surround us.
~God, help me to remember that the only thing that counts is faith expressed by love. Show me today how to put my faith into action.
What are some simple examples of how we can daily express our faith through love? What prevents us from loving actions? Is it our lack of faith?
