"This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." 1 John 4:10
Our son's college roommate called at 10 p.m. "Jon is very sick and wants you to come right away!" What could be wrong? He was fine a few hours earlier when we ate dinner together. We drove to Jon's dorm, praying all the way. The 30-minute trip seemed to take forever.
We found our son vomiting and writhing in pain. He needed a doctor immediately. We sped to the emergency room where they examined him and took blood tests. "He might need surgery, possibly for appendicitis," the medical assistant said.
Jon lay on the examining table doubled in pain, groaning and pleading, "Pray, Mother, pray." I prayed aloud again and again, asking God to relieve his pain and heal him.
In those anxious moments, my heart flooded with intense feelings of love for my son. I realized what a tremendous loss I would feel if he died.
By morning, our son's pain subsided. The doctors hadn't found anything wrong and released him to return to his dorm. Through this experience, however, I developed a new appreciation of God's deep love for me.
As my mother heart ached for my son at the hospital, I gained a small glimpse of the anguish God the Father must have felt when he allowed His only Son to suffer and die for my sins. He, too, loved His Son but willingly allowed Him to die to become the Savior of the world. I can't imagine sacrificing my son to give life to others. Yet God did just that for you and me. What amazing love!
In what ways have you experienced God's love? How can you show your love and gratitude to Him?
