A QUESTION OF TRUST
Topic: Matthew 7:9-11
Can I believe God loves me and not trust Him to take care of me?

The question came as I was wrestling with whether to trust God with something important. I say I believe God loves me. I say I believe He has my best interest in mind. Yet somehow, I'm uncertain. Like a kid who is told to eat his broccoli because it's good for him, I think, yeah but it can't taste as good as cake.

Sometimes it's easy to trust God, but in other times I'm just not quite sure. I grew up afraid I would end up marrying an ugly woman. Somehow I got it into my mind that marrying a pretty woman was like eating cake instead of broccoli. That there could be a pretty woman that was also on God's approved list was unthinkable. After all, to want to marry a pretty woman is selfish. For years I wrestled, afraid to pursue what I wanted and afraid to end up with what God wanted.

So we come back to the question. Can I believe God loves me and not trust Him to take care of me? Does a God who wants my best interest desire to stick me with a wife I don't want? Somehow this doesn't add up to me.

"When your son asks you for fish or for bread, do you give him a snake or a stone?" Jesus asks. "If sinful people know how to give good gifts to their children, wouldn't God who is perfect give good gifts to His children when they ask" (See Matthew 7:9-11)?

Later Paul asks, "If God was willing to give His own Son to die for us, why would He refuse to give us a good gift of lesser cost?" (See Romans 8:32)

The only way I can believe God loves me and not trust Him to take care of me is to believe He's too weak to take care of me. An all powerful god who doesn't have my best interest in mind clearly does not love me. Can I look at the sacrifice of Jesus and believe God doesn't love me passionately? That He isn't willing to spare any cost to get me back?

Does God love me? Do I trust Him?

As was asked in the devotional, "Does God love me? Do I trust Him?" Do you believe that God is there for you in the situation you are in now?

MADE BLAMELESS
Topic: Romans 8:33
"Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen?" Romans 8:33

What a wonderful challenge! It's wonderful because it's totally unanswerable. Every sin of those whom God has chosen was laid upon Jesus, the great Champion of our salvation, and by His atonement carried away.

There is no sin in God's book against His people. He sees no sin in Jacob, and no immorality in Israel, because they are wiped clean of their sin forever through in Christ. When the guilt of sin was taken away, the punishment for sin was also removed. For the Christian there will be no angry rebuke from God's hand; no, not so much as a single frown of vengeful justice. The believer may be scolded by his Father, but God as Judge has nothing to say to the Christian, except "I have absolved you: you are acquitted."

For the Christian there will be no "capital punishment" from God in this world, much less any second death. A follower of Christ is completely freed from all punishment as well as the guilt and power of sin.

Sin may stand in our way, and frustrate us with its constant warfare, but sin is a conquered foe for every soul who walks with Jesus. A Christian can overcome any and every sin if they rely upon God to do it. Those who wear a white robe in heaven overcame through the blood of the Lamb, and we may do the same.

No lust is too mighty, no tempting sin too strongly entrenched. We can overcome it through the power of Christ. Your sin is a condemned thing. It may kick and struggle, but it is doomed to die. God has written condemnation across its brow and Christ has crucified it, "nailing it to His cross." Go now and renounce it, and the will Lord help you to live to His praise, for sin with all its guilt, shame, and fear, is gone.

How do our sometimes valid feelings of guilt relate to our being made "blameless" in Christ?

SENDING OUT RIPPLES
Topic: 1 Timothy 4:12
I stood on the shore of the lake and watched the kids throw rocks into the water. Whole fistfuls of pebbles or stones flew through the air. Each one hit the water with the same result...ripples. Ripples that circled out and intersected with the other ripples, ripples that went far beyond the spot where each stone landed.

This image of the ripples never fails to bring the same thought to my mind over and over.

Small as each pebble is, not one touches the water without these resulting ripples.

We are like the pebble. No matter how influential or insignificant we see ourselves, we each send out ripples that circle out further than we might ever dream.

Words and deeds of kindness or cruelty, gentleness or abrasiveness, generosity or greed - all ripple out and touch other lives far beyond the boundaries we think they go. Our families, co-workers, neighbors, and even strangers are often touched by an act or a word of ours that we never dreamt would get that far.

My husband is good at skipping rocks across the water. The kids count the skips; the more the better. Sometimes we think we, too, can skip through life, independent, not touching others, hurrying on without time to stop and be concerned about anyone else.  The inevitable ripples still flow out.

We do influence, we do touch others, even when we are not aware of it. God even reminds us of our ripples ...

"...you be an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity" 1 Timothy 4:12

As you go through your day today be reminded that you are sending out ripples. You have no idea how far they go. Ask your Heavenly Father to help you bring His heart of love and grace into your setting and be conscious of the ripples you are sending out.

What kind of ripples are you sending out today? Ask God to help you send out ripples that will encourage those around you.

SAFETY IN GOD's WILL
Topic: Ephesians 5:15-17
Television ads urge people to live in the moment - to grasp instant gratification without considering consequences. This is the way Satan wants believers to think. He hopes we'll enjoy sin's passing pleasure so much that we wander far from God. But when we think about the right course of action for our life, we not only disappoint Satan; we gain the Lord's best. Today, let's look at three more questions we can ask when seeking assurance of God's will.

Does this decision fit who I am in Christ? Anything that harms the body or mind is not acceptable for Christians. A prayer warrior who eats badly is subject to God's natural law: poor diet results in poor health. Our attitudes, relationships, and actions tell the world to whom we belong.

Does this decision honor God? The best way for us to honor the Lord is through our obedience. Any action taken by a believer should reflect Him. What's more, we want our choices - both large and small - to acknowledge that God is the master of our life.

Now that I know His will, am I willing to act? After Scripture reading, prayer, and thoughtful contemplation, we can be sure of the Lord's plan. Occasionally, even when we are confident of the path, we might wonder how following God will affect us. He understands this; that's why He promised, "For I know the plans I have for you ... plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11) When we are inside the heavenly Father's will, we cannot lose.

Are there any decisions in your life that you've been putting off because you've been "waiting for God"? Could you make a properly, God-honoring decision right now by following these principles?

ASSURANCE OF GOD's WILL
Topic: Ephesians 1:15-17
God does not "play games" with His children by veiling His will in mystery. Believers can be sure of His leading in any situation. When we need confirmation, the following questions will help clarify:

Is this decision consistent with God's Word? If we want to know His will, God's Word will indicate the best move. The passage may not mention our exact situation, but the principle will speak to our situation.

Is this a wise decision? A choice may seem reasonable and even be pleasing emotionally, but the decision will stand long after present feelings have faded. We must consider consequences and long - term effects.

Can I ask God to enable me? Contrary to popular opinion, believers can't ask the Lord for anything they want. A man in need of money, for example, cannot seek divine blessing on a shady deal. God promises to provide, but anything gained outside His plan will turn to ashes.

Do I have genuine peace? We can talk and talk at God, but we cannot force peace. Regardless of the way we think or feel about a matter, God will not give us a tranquil heart before the time is right. Genuine peace includes His confirmation, a calm heart, and the affirmation of our conscience.

The goal of evaluating a situation by means of these questions is not to get to "yes!" but to honestly seek God's will. Prayerfully consider each query until you can say, "I know this is the Lord's plan for me."

Have you ever felt genuine peace about what turned out to be a poor decision? How large of a role should your feelings play in making decisions?

BREAKING CHAINS
Topic: James 4:7
"Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." James 4: 7

Long ago, there was a village blacksmith who boasted of his invincible strength. He proudly declared he could break anyone's chains. When strong steel links were brought to him, he found the weakest link ... and easily snapped the metal.

One day, the blacksmith broke the law and was put into chains. He scoffed at his jailers. Didn't they know his incredible power?

Carefully he sifted through the links ... again and again ... unable to find the usual flaw. Then, in horror he realized he'd been bound by ... his OWN chains!

And, that's the way it is with sin.

You may think you're strong enough to withstand Satan's enticements. But, when you repeatedly give in to temptation, you become what has become a habit.

Dear one, what "binds" you today? Ask for God's help. He will set you free!

What "binds" you today?

RED OR GREEN
Topic: John 14:6
"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6

I was passing through immigration in a small Central American country this week and became rather intrigued with their random selection process in customs. As you approach the customs exit, there is a large signal light that looks exactly like those at traffic intersections.

After the customs officer finds your papers to be in order, he instructs you to press a button below the light. If it turns green, you are free to go, but a red signal puts you in an inspection line for a rather comprehensive review. I had watched the process for about ten minutes while I stood in line. I was trying to figure out a pattern and there was none.

It might flash red three times in a row and then green for the next ten times. I gave up trying to figure out how I would fare. It was an exercise of chance, totally beyond my control, so I relaxed and waited my turn.

I thought about that's how it will be when I reach the pearly gates, only it won't be an exercise of chance, as the outcome will have been predetermined by me before I leave this good old earth.

I also noticed, as I stood in line, that the customs lights were missing one thing usually found at an intersection..... a yellow light. Yep, it was red or green with no in between, with no time to make a made dash to beat the red light. It was all or nothing. Either you were in or you were out. There was no middle turf or time to make up your mind.

I don't believe that God's heavenly admission lights have a yellow or caution light either. When your case comes up for heavenly review, either you're on or you're out. And, it's not a matter of chance either. It's a matter of grace. And, I won't push the button.... God will, as the decision is His, but his decision is based on my earthly acceptance and the forgiveness of my sin. Paul writes in Romans that if I confess with my mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead, I will be saved. That sounds like a plan to me.

As I drove away from the airport I thought about the heavenly process, I did so with an assurance that I have already arranged for a green light. It won't be a game of chance. It is a done deal ...... signed, sealed and delivered.

And, oh by the way, if you are wondering how I fared in the customs line, I got a green light and was out in no time. This green light was good luck, but the one waiting for me in heaven is good theology.

What is the core difference between Christianity and every false religion on Earth?

PRAISE GOD FOR ALL HE HAS DONE
Topic: Psalm 103:2
"Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits" Psalm 103:2

It is delightful and profitable to observe how the hand of God was upon the lives of ancient saints, to see His goodness deliver them, see His mercy pardon them, and see His faithfulness keep His covenant with them.

But isn't it even more delightful and profitable for us to remember the hand of God working in our own lives? We should look back at our own history as being at least as full of God, as full of His goodness and of His truth, as the lives of any of the saints who have gone before. We do our Lord an injustice when we presume that He performed all His mighty acts for those in the past, but doesn't perform wonders for us today.

Let's review our own lives. Surely we will discover some happy incidents which are both refreshing to ourselves and glorifying to God.

Has God delivered you from trouble? Have you passed safely through rivers, supported by the divine presence? Have you walked through proverbial fires unharmed?

Remember, this is the God who gave Solomon the desire of his heart. Hasn't He also often heard and answered your requests? This is the God of beautiful outpourings about whom David sang, "Who satisfies your desires with good things." Has He never satiated you with blessing? Have you never been made to lie down in green pastures? Have you never been led by the still waters?

Surely the goodness of God has been the same to us as to the saints of the past. Let us then weave His mercies into a song. Let us take the pure gold of thankfulness, and the jewels of praise and make them into another crown for the head of Jesus. Let our souls make sweet music, music that is as exhilarating as that which came from David's harp, while we praise the Lord whose mercy endures forever!

How has God delivered you, personally?

A RIDE ON THE QUIET CAR
"Be still and know that I am God" Psalm 46:10

Hastily I finished my last appointment on Capitol Hill and made a mad dash for Union Station and not a minute too early, as I arrived one minute before the Acila Express left for New York. I presented my ticket and walked at a fast pace down to Track 15, where I jumped aboard the first Business Class car available. After stowing my luggage I settled in my seat just as the train slowly pulled out of the station. My cell phone rang and just as soon as I began the conversation a lady a couple of rows forward turned to me with her finger to her lips and pointing to the sign overhead which read "Quiet Car."

The sign explained the rules of the Quiet Car: no talking, no cell phones, no standing in the aisles. In other words, that translates to be quiet and be still, so reluctantly, I did. Where I would normally pull out my lap top, do mail and make phone calls, now about all I could do was sit, read, watch and listen, and I did a little of each.

First, I took out my Encounter devotional and my Bible and proceeded to pour through the scriptures. I just sat back and listened .... Listened to God and listened to my inner self. I spent a lot of time looking out the window. A record snowfall had turned the countryside in to a winter wonderland. What a sight as the train picked up speed and we traversed the countryside of Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I saw God's majestic hand in the beautiful ice formations and in the drifts of snow. It was as if I could see God himself. It was an awesome quiet time and when the train pulled into Penn Station, I got off a rejuvenated man, all because I had jumped on the Quiet Car.

The experience on the train last week has given me a lot to think about, He is asking: "How are you with your quiet time." I was again reminded of the need for a quiet time just yesterday as I checked into a hotel. When I got off the elevator, a large sign greeted me informing that I had entered a "Quiet Zone," where "no children, leisure groups or circus animals will be assigned." It further instructed that in this area there would be no loud TV, no slamming of doors and no loud singing in the shower.

God's quiet time formula is much like His stewardship formula: "The more you give, the more you receive." I have found that when I do carve out a time for God, preferably at the beginning of the day, though at first my schedule says I don't have time, I have to respond and make time. And. When I do, somehow God always stretches my schedule and I am more productive than ever.

This is my busiest season of the year and so easy to shut God out of the schedule, but all the more reason for the Master to gently remind me, whether through a sign on a train or in a hotel, every day we need to be reminded to spend time with Him and then pull apart before you fall apart. I highly recommend a ride on the Quiet Car, actually or symbolically every day in every life.

Have you had a quiet time with God lately? Can you find/make some time for Him today?

BE THANKFUL
Topic: Ephesians 5:20
"Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Ephesians 5:20

What did Jesus do when He faced a problem? Such as having 5,000 hungry people in the wilderness with only five small barley loaves and two small fish at His disposal? Jesus took one small loaf, broke it in half, lifted it up to heaven, and gave thanks.

Another time, Jesus was confronted with the death of his dear friend, Lazarus. Standing at the burial tomb, the sound of wailing in the air, the accusations of the sisters in his ears --what did Jesus do? He raised his eyes to heaven and simply said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me..." When confronted with a problem, Jesus gave thanks. Interesting, isn't it? We usually say please.

The language of faith is not please, but thank you. Please is a beggar's language. It denotes, I'm not quite sure that God will do anything. Maybe if I pray louder, longer, and with more sincerity, He will do it. So the onus is on me--on doing it right. When we give thanks, the onus is on God: we expect Him to look after the problem.

Notice, we are not told to feel thankful; that would be unrealistic. It wouldn't even make sense. Some things are downright evil, and God hates evil. We are instructed to give thanks. That's something we can do even if we don't feel thankful. It's a decision we make.

It's okay to pray like this: "God, I don't like what's happened. It doesn't make any sense to me. But I thank you that You know what this is all about and You will work even this into Your good purpose for my life."

When we give thanks to God in every situation, change happens. Perhaps the greatest change is inside of us.

We begin to notice our blessings--even the small ones. Hope flourishes. Perspective sharpens. We can see more clearly what's truly important--what needs to be done. We give God an opportunity to work His miracles within us and outside of us.

Father, thank you that no matter what's happening, you're still in control. Thank you that you always have my best interest at heart.

What problems are you facing?

PURPOSE OF PAIN
Topic: Matthew 16:24-28
"God, if You love me, why must I endure pain?" This question preoccupies many believers in their darkest hours of need. While pain comes in different forms and has different durations, suffering always comes with an objective greater than our comfort, pleasure, or personal goals. If we seek God's purpose for grief, we will find both His peace and His deep love for us.

Pain instructs. Christ's sufficiency is more apparent during times of suffering than in the midst of blessing. Discovering God's faithful provision strengthens our resolve to endure.

Pain purifies. Counterfeit faith cannot withstand hardship's flames. Like gold in a refiner's fire, suffering believers experience the burning away of impurities until only things of value remain. Trials bring into focus the truth about the world we live in, the nature of the people we meet, and the incomparable worth of the Lord.

Pain motivates. Pain drives us to God. How often do we hear testimony from people who discovered Him during their worst trial? In His wisdom, our Father knows whether we require motivation from blessing or from distress.

Pain opens us to intimacy with God. At the end of our own resources is the Lord's boundless strength. Running into His arms guarantees us the comfort and energy that is available only through an intimate relationship with the Father.

Living an easy life doesn't earn rewards. Though our instinct is to sidestep pain, suffering helps us find intimacy with God and the great purpose He sets for our life.

Can you recall an incident in your life where your character (who you are) was "refined by fire", and you were formed into a better person via difficult life circumstances?

HE MADE HIM

Billy Graham speaks about why Jesus Christ went to the cross:

The Bible says that God gave His Son on the cross. And He made Him to be sin for us. You think of Jesus, now…He’d become sin. Not His sins, but yours and mine. And God had laid on Him the iniquity of us all, who His own self bear our sins on the cross. And the Bible says that if we are to ever get to heaven, and ever have the peace of God in our hearts, you’ll have to come to Him.  Has that ever happened to you?

How do you answer Mr. Graham's question? Have you ever come to Jesus Christ by faith? We're the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. To begin a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, call toll free at 866-JESUS-CARES. Or click

THE DEPTHS
Billy Graham talks about the depths of our sin:
The cross shows the very depths of our sin. You don’t see sin in its very depths and how awful it is till you see the cross. If Jesus Christ, the Son of God, had to go to the cross for our sins to be forgiven, sin must be a terrible thing in the sight of God. And it is. What is sin? The Bible says it’s a missing of the target. It’s a failure to keep God’s commands. But more than that, it’s unrighteousness. And God sees into our hearts and into our minds and our thoughts.

As Mr. Graham has just said, Jesus Christ went t o the cross so our sins could be forgiven. We're the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. To begin a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, call toll free at 877-2GRAHAM. Or click

JESUS PRAYS FOR YOU
Topic: John 17:20
"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message..." John 17:20

During the Last Supper, Jesus prayed for himself and then he prayed for the disciples. And then, with the hour of his death approaching, he took time to pray for you. He prayed for all those who would believe through the ministry of the disciples, and that means you.

This is what he told God:

"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

"I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

"Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world" (John 17:20-24)

Jesus prays for you still. "Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them" (Hebrews 7:25)

Jesus wants you with him. "Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory ..." (John 17:24)

What does Jesus' prayer for you (in John 17) mean to your spiritual walk? How would Jesus pray for you today?

MANASSEH

Franklin Graham speaks about a man named Manasseh:

This man sinned against God. This was one of the most wicked, vile men to ever walk this earth, and while he was in prison, he humbled himself. And you’ve got to be willing to humble yourself today before Almighty God. And you say, "Well, Franklin, how do I that?" You’ve got to be willing to admit to the fact that you’re a sinner. You’ve got to be willing today to turn from your sins. And you say, "Well, Franklin, I don’t know if I can." With Christ in your heart, He will give you the power to turn from your sins.  You can’t do it on your own. I can’t do it on my own, but with Christ in our hearts, He will give you the strength and the power to live a new life. And then by faith to believe in Jesus Christ, God’s one and only Son. Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ? Are you willing to trust Him?

MEDITATION FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH
Topic: Psalm 119:15
"I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways." Psalm 119:15

There are times when solitude is better than community, and silence is wiser than speech. We will be better Christians if we take more time to be "alone" with God, and gathering spiritual strength through meditation on His Word, so that we will be refreshed to work in His service.

We should take time to ponder God's word, because then we get real nourishment out of it. Truth is something like a cluster of grapes on the vine: if we want wine, we must work for it; we must press and squeeze it many times. The worker's feet must come down joyfully upon the bunches, or else the juice will not flow. They must stomp the grapes well, or else much of the precious liquid will be wasted. So likewise we must, by meditation, work at God's clusters of truth, if we really want to grow through God's wisdom.

Our bodies are not sustained just by putting food into our mouths. The process which supplies our muscle, nerves, and bones is the process of digestion. By digestion the outward food becomes absorbed into our bodies. Likewise, our souls don't become well-nourished merely by listening to this and that, to part here and there of divine truth. Hearing, reading, and learning require inwardly digesting to be useful, and this digesting of the truth requires meditating upon it.

We may wonder why some Christians, although they hear many sermons, make slow advances in their spiritual walk? It's because they do not thoughtfully meditate on God's Word. They love the wheat, but they do not grind it. They would eat the corn, but they will not go into the field to gather it. The fruit hangs upon the tree, but they will not pluck it. The water flows at their feet, but they will not stoop to drink it.

Our prayer today is "Lord, help us overcome such foolishness." And let this be our firm intention in response: "God, I will meditate on your precepts."

SET AN EXAMPLE
Topic: 1 Timothy 4:12
"Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity" 1Timothy 4:12

Timothy was a young man when Paul wrote these words to him, explaining that he was not too young to set a good example. It is a reminder to all of us, regardless of our age or the length of time that we have been believers.  God has called each of us to live out our faith as a model for other believers.

Paul then listed some actions and attitudes to which 1 Timothy needed to give his attention:

Devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture (4:13)
Devote yourself to preaching (4:13)
Devote yourself to teaching (4:13)
Do not neglect your gift (4:14)
Be diligent in these matters (4:15)
Give yourself wholly to these matters (4:15)
Watch your life and doctrine closely (4:16)
Persevere (4:16)

Although some of the items addressed by Paul may be specific to Timothy and his gifts, there is much we can learn from this passage about how God calls us to live.

We need to study God's Word to know what we believe and we need to live out those beliefs. The words persevere, be diligent, give yourself wholly, and watch closely, all signify the great importance placed on how we live.

The way we talk, the way we interact, the way we love, how faith is evident in our lives, as well as the purity of our words and actions are all elements of how our lives should demonstrate our faith in God.

People are watching.

Paul tells Timothy to do these things so that everyone will see his progress (4:16). We are called to live our lives honestly and transparently before others.

Paul also says that those who watch and listen will be saved by our example (4:16).

What better reason can there be to set a good example?

Who has been an example of these things to you? What can you do today to be an example for someone else?

THE VIRGIN BIRTH: DOES IT MATTER
Topic: Matthew 1:23
"Behold, the Virgin shall be with child, and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His Name Immanuel," which translated means, God with us." Matthew 1:23

Does it matter if we accept the virgin birth as truth? Whatever the Word of God proclaims - and the virgin birth is emphatically acknowledged throughout Scripture - Christians are to believe it. We are not free to pick and choose which portions of the Bible we will believe or interpret for our own benefit.

We do not have to fully comprehend the virgin birth in order to be saved. Certainly I did not comprehend that idea or many other scriptural concepts when I was saved at twelve years of age. I just knew I was a sinner and wanted Jesus in my life. But there is a difference between being ignorant or uneducated and deliberately rejecting Scripture's testimony about who Jesus was. When a person dismisses the Jesus presented to us in the Word of God, he or she cannot be saved.

People who deny the truth of the virgin birth tend to reject other foundational biblical truths as well. Some find it more comfortable to select parts of Scripture that suit their lifestyle or opinions rather than to apply the entire Word of God to their thinking and behavior. When we limit which passages we will consider as true, our susceptibility to Satan's lies grows. We drift further and further from narrow path of obedience to the Lord.

To believe in the Jesus of the Bible is to accept Him as the virgin - born Son of God - the sinless Christ who gave His life at Calvary in order to take our sin upon Himself. Our freedom is greater when we accept God's truth instead of fighting for own opinions.

Are we ever tempted to ignore certain parts of scripture when we find them inconvenient or seem embarrassing, and if so, is this a legitimate way to approach God's word?

FRUIT IN SEASON
Topic: John 14:27
New kinds of fresh fruit began showing up on the grocery store shelves this week. Fruit that has been out of season for months is back!

The Bible says that "peace" is one of the "fruits of the Spirit." Sometimes it feels as if that fruit goes out of season too. As the realities of the evening news come into my living room I think of that fruit of the Spirit. As the images and stories parade across the TV screen I sometimes feel my own sense of peace fading.

So I turn my attention to God's Word to see again what He has to say about this fruit called peace. I discover afresh that His peace is never out of season. His peace is one that is offered to our hearts. But how do we pick this fruit? How do we have this peace in the midst of troubling news? Listen to what Jesus says.

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27).

I am reminded that His peace is a gift. It won't be found in conventional places or in ways the world offers. It is something directed to the heart and it replaces fear and anxiety.

To pick this fruit, to have this peace, I need to take action. I need to ask God to quiet my heart. I need to pray for those in charge in troubled days. I need to pray for those who suffer and for those who are hurt, confused and angry. I need to ask God to take the unease in my own heart and replace it with His gift of peace. I need to share the peace He gives me as I go through my day. This may mean offering to pray together with another who is worried.

Sometimes when the storm rages and the sea of life is not calm, the mighty hand of God comes in, by our invitation, and simply calms us. The peace of heart that comes from the Holy Spirit is a mystery. In the middle of the storm He brings a calm that can be explained no other way than by His divine care. We receive it in order to share it.

Ask God today for His fruit of peace in your heart and mind. Ask Him for an opportunity to share that fruit with those around you who need His peace in their heart today.

Are you experiencing peace today? If not, how can that peace be restored?

REMEMBER THE PROMISES IN HIS WORD
Topic: Psalm 119:49
"Remember your word to your servant, for you have given me hope." Psalm 119:49

Whatever your specific need is, you will likely find a promise about it in the Bible.

Are you feeling wearied and weak because your life has been troubling and tiring? Here is the promise: "He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak." (Isaiah 40:29) When you read such a promise, take it back to our great God who promised it, and ask Him to fulfil His own word.

Are you seeking after Christ, and yearning for closer relationship with Him? This promise shines like a star upon you: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled." (Matthew 5:6) Take that promise to God's throne continually. Do not plead anything else, but go to God over and over again, praying "Lord, You have said it, I humbly ask that You do as You have said."

Are you distressed because of sin, and burdened with the heavy load of your wrongdoings? Listen to these words: "I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more." (Isaiah 43:25) You have no worth of your own to deserve God's pardon, but plead His written promises and He will perform them.

Are you afraid that you won't be able to persevere to the end? Do you fear that, after having thought yourself to be a child of God, you might instead be a 'castaway'? Take this word of grace to God's throne and plead it: "Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed." (Isaiah 54:10)

If you have lost the sweet sense of the Saviour's presence, and are seeking Him with a sorrowful heart, remember these promises: "Return to me, and I will return to you" (Malachi 3:7) and "For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back." (Isaiah 54:7) Rest your faith upon God's own word, and whatever your fears or desires, look to God's "Bank of Faith" in your Father's written word, saying, "Remember your word to your servant, for you have given me hope."

Which of God's promises that you just read resonated most powerfully with you, and why?
