STRONG IN THE GRACE
Topic: 2 Timothy 1:9
"This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel." 2 Timothy 1:9, 10

"You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus." 2 Timothy 2:1

How is your strength these days?

If you are like me, some days you feel energized, eager to work hard and easily patient, then other days it seems like a smile and a kind word require monumental effort that you just don't have the power to accomplish.

God knew our own human strength fluctuates and eventually fails us. That is why He instructs us to be strong in the grace.

The grace of God is limitless.

It never runs out. It is always available.

Therefore, rather than relying on our own strength which depends on our physical health, how much sleep we had last night, our mental and emotional well-being, the stress in our family, the time of the year or simply the time of the month; we are called to rely on God's grace.

His grace gives us strength.

Knowing that God loves me and Christ died for me gives me the energy to face today. When I am physically tired, I can find strength to forgive because God in His grace has forgiven me. When I am emotionally wrung out, God's word strengthens me because it reminds me of His grace. Meditating on God's grace rejuvenates my spirit, the way a good night's sleep or regular exercise revives my body.

I encourage you to spend time today thinking about God's grace and asking Him to strengthen you by it.

Hebrews 13:9 says, "It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by ceremonial foods, which are of no value to those who eat them." What things do we mistakenly think will strengthen us rather than grace?

SEEKING AFTER GOD
Topic: Luke 12:29-34
The pursuit of God through His Son Jesus is to be our highest aim. It requires an attitude of wholeheartedness, diligence, persistence, confidence, and humility. To seek Him, what actions can we take?

First, we need to study the Scriptures. A structured, ongoing examination of them will cause our faith to grow and provide what we need to for life and godliness. (2 Peter 1:3) Next, we must maintain an active prayer life. Prayer is conversation with God - it includes both speaking and listening. Third, we are to meditate, which involves prayerful consideration of what we read in the Word. This means digesting a passage of Scripture verse by verse and asking the Lord questions about what it means. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we will gain understanding of its application to life. This process helps us absorb His truths so we can live by them.

As we assimilate scriptural principles, we gain wisdom. It becomes easier to identify where the Lord is at work and to evaluate our circumstances in light of His character and plan. We will also recognize when we are to act. As we listen to messages based on God's Word, we will grow in the Lord. Listening includes a desire to hear, a willingness to act, and a determination not to be distracted. Lastly, we should observe how God is working in others' lives, which will benefit us as well.

God promises to reward our seeking. Sometimes we will be blessed with greater understanding, at other times with inexplicable joy. Best of all, seeking always leads to finding Him. (Jeremiah 29:13)

Often when we read large sections of the Bible at a time we may miss some important points. Do you "digest scripture verse by verse" as the devotional author suggests?

HOW's YOUR MATH
Topic: 2 Peter 1:5-7
"... make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge, and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love." 2 Peter 1:5-7

Math was never my favorite subject in school. I learned the multiplication tables through sheer determination and a good memory. Algebra and geometry were major trials that I suffered through only with the assistance of patient, good-natured teachers.

Such discipline is also needed in the Christian life-this time with addition! My goal in conquering basic mathematical skills was a decent grade. Peter encourages us to be diligent about adding the qualities listed above for a far greater purpose: "If you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." (Second Peter 1:8)

In school my knowledge of math was tested through frequent examinations. These tests were neither welcomed nor enjoyed, but they were an accurate assessment of my growth in the subject. This is also true in our Christian experience. Tests will reveal how we are doing in our walk of faith, but we have the amazing promise that "God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted (or tested) beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted (or tested), He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."

How different might be our attitude toward life's tests if we viewed them as "math problems"-part of the pattern leading us toward an "effective and productive" life.

Lord, I often react to my spiritual growth just as I did to math-with complaint and short-sightedness. Help me be diligent in growth, gratefully applying myself to Your plan for my life. Amen.

How is God helping you "add" in your Christian life? Which of the qualities listed by Peter is most difficult for you? In which quality have you recently seen growth?

WHO's GUILTY
Topic: John 8:7
"Jesus once set a guilty woman free from her accusers by showing that the people who were judging her were just as guilty of sin as she was. "All right, stone her," He said to the religious leaders who were ready with stones in hand, to deliver the judgment she indeed deserved. "But let those who have never sinned throw the first stones"" John 8:7, NLT

This incident shows us something very important about our purpose as Christians living in a world of sinners. Our job is not to throw judgment upon sinners, but to identify with them. The Pharisees and religious leaders were trying to separate themselves from this sinful woman they had found in the act of committing adultery. By judging her they were going to be able to feel much better about themselves. Jesus put a stop to their little charade by putting them in the same boat with the woman they were accusing. They were just as guilty.

It is so tempting to think, especially after being a Christian for a while and spending a lot of time around Christians, that you are better than other people. You start to separate yourself from sinners, forgetting it was your sin that brought you to Christ in the first place. I know this because I'm so good at it.

The gospel comes best from people who identify with the sins of others, because they have become so familiar with their own sin. It is noted in the account that as the self-righteous leaders were convicted by the presence of sin in their own lives, "they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest" (John 8:9 NLT). That makes sense. The oldest would be the ones most aware of their own sinfulness. There comes a time in your life when you can't fool yourself anymore. There were probably a few young, arrogant idealists who hung on as long as possible, but even they had to finally give in to the truth about their own guilt.

The proliferation of both spoken and unspoken judgment found primarily within Christians, has forced many into the world, unarmed and without a known Christian friend and mutual sinner. We are constantly trying to separate ourselves from a world that Jesus wants us in. Not only that, He wants us to see our own sin and not make such a big fuss over everyone else's. Our sin nature is our connection with our neighbor, our salvation is our hope, and the good news of the gospel is our message.

Sinners can spot a mile away the hypocrisy of proclaiming a gospel about the forgiveness of everyone's sins but your own.

Jesus preached more about hypocrisy than most other topics; do you see hypocrisy in the church (or yourself) and how can we (and you) start correcting this?

He Went
Topic: 1 Peter 2:24

Billy Graham talks about Jesus' suffering:

In 1 Peter 2:24 it says, "By His stripes, we are healed."  Think of those stripes He received on His back. Think of the pulling of His beard, how that must hurt. And the spikes through His hands, the spear in His side. But that wasn't His real suffering. His real suffering was when He said, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"  God the Father in that moment became separated in a way that we don't understand from the Son. And Jesus went to hell for you and me. He took our hell and our judgment on the cross because He loved us and shed His blood for us.

As Mr. Graham has just said, Jesus Christ shed His blood on the cross for us. To begin a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, call here at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, call toll free, at 877-2GRAHAM. Or click

WHY DO WE PRAY
Topic: Proverbs 3:5-6
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

Have you ever wondered why you need to pray when God knows your thoughts?

Prayer is deliberate communication with God. He knows our thoughts but He likes for us to communicate with Him frequently. Isn't it wonderful that we can communicate with Him as we do with our friends? He speaks to us through His Word, which prompts us to interact with Him. When we have the Holy Spirit living within us, we have the ability to recognize His voice.

Satan tells us our prayers don't matter because God is limited to what we think or God knows our thoughts, so we don't need to pray. When we don't know what to do or in situations that are too big for us to solve, God wants us to give Him an opportunity to display His power in our lives.

I have found that when I give my preconceived ideas and notions to God, His answers are far better than my preconceived ideas. If we ask God to get involved in our daily lives, follow His directions, we will see amazing results. When we pray we give God the opportunity to display His power in our lives. The same God who parted the Red Sea for the Israelites is at work today. God answers our prayers because of His great mercy and His love for us, not our good works.

When we pray we don't have to listen to electronic messages before we get to talk to God. He doesn't have voice mail. His line is never busy. We are not put on hold or hear the message, "All calls will be answered in the order received." We don't have to wait for God to take our call. We read in Isaiah 65:24, "While they are still speaking, I will hear." However, He does not always answer our prayers immediately, sometimes we have to wait for His timing, but He does hear us while we are praying.

God has many blessings in store for us. He is patiently waiting for us to want the blessings enough to take the initiative to ask for them. Asking is the beginning of receiving. Have you ever thought about how many blessings you have missed because you have not asked? What a blessing it is when He answers even the little requests, like a parking place.

How many times have you asked God to specifically bless you? How much time do you spend communing with God?

TRUE: GOD's LOVE FILLS ME
Topic: 2 Corinthians 13:14

"May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all." 2 Corinthians 13:14

In faith, I know these things to be true:

God is full of love and grace, and he fills me with his love and grace. God's work within me is to clear a channel for his love and grace to flow through me into the lives of anyone and everyone I meet.

I may not be there yet, but I am "confident of this, that he who began a good work in [me] will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus" (Philippians 1:6).

And I know "God is able to make all grace abound [in me], so that in all things at all times, having all that [I] need, [I] will abound in every good work" (2 Corinthians 9:8).

He will make my joy complete because I no longer live in darkness, but I now live in the truth and have fellowship with God (1 John 1:4; 1 John 1:6).

Through the "Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit," I am, at all times, filled with grace, mercy, and peace (2 Corinthians 13:14).

This is what I believe to be true and I will walk accordingly, allowing God to do his work in me from the inside out. Father, make it so. I believe; help my unbelief.

In which area(s) of your faith (perhaps some listed above) can you pray today: "I believe; help my unbelief"?

THROUGH EVEN ROOFS
Topic: Mark 2:4
"Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on." Mark 2:4

Faith is full of inventions. The house was full and a crowd blocked up the door, but faith found a way of getting to the Lord and placing the paralytic man before Him. It seems, according to Luke 5:19, that roof tiling had to be removed, which would make dust and cause minor danger to those below. But where the need is urgent we shouldn't mind running some risks and rustling some feathers. If we cannot direct sinners to Jesus by ordinary methods, then we must use extraordinary ones!

Jesus was there to heal, and therefore, ignoring the consequences, the paralyzed man's friends risked everything in faith so that he might have his sins forgiven. I so dearly wish that we would have more daring faith like this! Can we seek this kind of faith for ourselves and for our co-workers? Can we promise today to perform some new noble act for the love of God's children for the glory of the Lord? The world is constantly inventing, and faith may invent too in order to reach the outcasts who lie in need around us.

Is the Lord among us right now? Have we seen His face for ourselves this morning? Have we felt His healing power? If so, then through doors, through windows, or through roofs, let us labour to bring poor souls to Jesus, ignoring the consequences. If hunger for physical healing can break through roofs, surely hunger for souls should not to be hindered. It was the presence of Jesus, after all, which excited such courage in the friends of the paralyzed man. All means are good when faith and love are truly set on winning souls.

Lord, make us quick to suggest methods of reaching those who don't know you, and bold to carry these methods out!

Have you ever considered joining your church's outreach efforts? Or if your church has none, offering to help start some?

CALLED TO A HOLY LIFE
Topic: 2 Timothy 1:8-9
"So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us to a holy life - not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace." 2 Timothy 1:8 - 9

Almighty God, Creator of the universe, sent Jesus to save us from our sins because we were incapable of saving ourselves. He did this, not because we were smart or pretty or friendly or funny but because He loved us.

It wasn't because we had accomplished great things or sacrificed much for Him or were really sincere, but because of His grace.

Your life has purpose. You have been included in God's great plan.

You have received a calling. It is holiness.

What does it mean to be called to a holy life?

It means refusing to let foul language be part of your vocabulary; being honest and showing integrity in every situation regardless of cost financially; being pure in what you read, what you watch and your behavior regardless of how lonely you are; basing decisions on whether it is honoring to God rather than if it will get you what you want.

Set apart. Pure. Dedicated to God.

Holiness is not an easy life; rather it is a grateful response to what God has done for us. It is made possible through grace. By the power of God we can be unashamed to testify about the Lord and unafraid to suffer for the gospel.

God, thank you for calling me to a holy life. Let Your power and Your grace be at work in my life so that holiness will be my grateful response to Your salvation.

What does being called to a holy life mean to you? How does knowing that we were called to be holy because of God's purpose and grace affect your attitude toward holy living?

CHANGING PEOPLE THROUGH PRAYER
Topic: Psalm 69:13

And all things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive." Matthew 21:22

In Paul's letter to the Colossians, we find a prayer pattern designed to initiate change in someone's life. When a believer desires spiritual reform for himself or another person, he can use Paul's request for wisdom and strength by substituting a name for the word 'you.' The prayer works because it is continuous, specific, and within God's will.

Impatience is a believer's enemy. We want the Lord to respond at the speed of modern technology. But His timing considers the need to align circumstances and prepare hearts for an answer to prayer. Unburdened by our quest for efficiency, Paul said he never ceased speaking to the Lord about the Colossians. We do not know how often he mentioned them, but the number of times is unimportant; what counts is that Paul patiently and regularly repeated their names before the Father.

The Apostle did not settle for a simple appeal of "Lord, bless the Colossian church," either. That is a lazy prayer. Paul specifically requested that the people grow in their knowledge. Communication with our Father should always be detailed. How can we perceive His answers if we have not made a specific request?

God desires to answer petitions like the one Paul wrote. His will is that every one of His children enjoy an intimate relationship with Him. We talk to our Father, as we should, of physical or emotional needs, but too frequently overlook requesting consistent spiritual growth. Through Paul, God has given us a perfect pattern for righteous prayer that He will answer.

Do you know how you can pray specifically for your friends and family? Can you ask them next time you see or talk with them?

ARE PEOPLE ASKING QUESTIONS
Topic: 1 Peter 3:13
"Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you're living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy." 1 Peter 3:13 (The Message)

In a recent conversation with a successful businessman, he described how he encourages his Christian colleagues to live and work in a secular environment where a verbal expression of faith may not be welcome or even allowed. His advice, however, should not be limited to the nine-to-five, frequently harsh business world. How can we be "evangelists" in whatever community in which we find ourselves? This man says, "Live a life that invites inquiry."

Am I living my faith in such a supernatural way that people are dazed by my reliance upon God? Do my neighbors see unselfish acts quite out of character with the prevailing culture? Do I courteously relate to my family?

Paul and his friend Silas were privileged to hear that kind of question. They had been beaten and jailed for talking about Jesus but their response was nothing short of miraculous. Instead of whining or beating on the bars of their cell door, at midnight they were praying and "singing hymns to God." Suddenly God intervened with an earthquake that shook open the prison doors. Perhaps it was both the earthquake and the men's obvious trust in God that elicited the jailer's question: "What must I do to be saved, to really live?" (Acts 16:30, The Message)

When was the last time a friend asked, "What IS it with you? How can you keep going? Why do you seem content when your world is crumbling?" This is not to suggest that we hide our difficulties from onlookers, but what a thrill it is when we allow God to produce supernatural love, joy, peace and patience in the face of trial-responses that invite  inquiry.

Father God, grace me with the desire, willingness and ability to live a life that invites inquiry. Help me trust you to put the right words in my mouth at the right times.

When was the last time a friend asked you about your faith? What was your response? Read 1 Peter 3:12-14 for encouragement.

TROUBLED IN SPIRIT
Franklin Graham talks about how you can come to Jesus, right now, no matter what:

Nicodemus is troubled in his spirit and he's troubled in his heart. And he couldn't sleep, and so he comes to Jesus under the cover of darkness to speak with Him. And many of you tonight, I believe you have come here tonight and you're troubled. And my question to you tonight is:  What's troubling you? Are you troubled by drugs or alcohol? And you say, "Franklin, nobody knows about the problem I have, and nobody knows about this addiction.  And I've tried to handle it on my own, but it's just gotten me deeper and deeper. And there's no control, and I don't know what to do. And I wish, like Nicodemus, I could come to Jesus tonight, have His help." You can. You can come to Him tonight, just like Nicodemus.

As Franklin Graham has just said, you can come of Jesus Christ, right now and receive new life. To make that step of faith, call at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, toll free, at 877-2GRAHAM. Or click

THINKING OF YOU

Billy Graham explains how Jesus thought of you while He was on the cross:

He’s not waiting to condemn you. He’s willing to open His arms and hug you and kiss you and say, "I love you." That’s why He gave His Son to die on the cross. And when Jesus was on that cross, shedding his blood, He was thinking of you. Because He was God Incarnate He could think of every person that was ever to live. He could think of every person here tonight either here or in the other arena and He loves you. "Christ died for you." Then He rose again. He’s a living Christ and He’s coming back again.

As Mr. Graham has just reminded you, Jesus Christ is alive and He's coming back for everyone who trusts in Him by faith. To begin a relationship with Jesus Christ, call at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, toll free, at 877-2GRAHAM. Or click

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FAITH AND OPTIMISM
Topic: Hebrews 11:1

"Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see." Hebrews 11:1

Now compare the definition of faith above with this dictionary definition of optimism: "A tendency to expect the best possible outcome or dwell on the most hopeful aspects of a situation."*

The two words' definitions seem superficially similar. Both mention "hope," and both talk about having confidence that things will turn out well. But where does the optimism of someone who doesn't know Christ find its foundation? On what basis can someone who doesn't know Christ be reasonably optimistic? Surely not from observing the world around us. Pick up any newspaper, and most of the news you'll find will be quite depressing. By mere observation of our fallen world alone, no optimism could reasonably be found.

A Christian's faith, however, in contrast to optimism, is "assurance" based on evidence, not blind optimism. By knowing the living God and His divine promises, we know that no matter how bad things may look, God is ultimately sovereign and in control. "Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved!" Paul assures us, quoting the Old Testament prophet Joel (Romans 10:13; Joel 2:32). We know that among God's people, He "will remove all of their sorrows, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain" (Revelation 21:3,4) God has proven again and again by His historical acts in the Old Testament (such as the Exodus) and the New Testament (the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus) that He provides the firm foundation upon which to base our faith.

Unlike some who follow their own whimsical, baseless optimism, followers of Jesus can take real comfort. We do so not because of blind optimism, but instead because of our faith in God and His firm foundation: His mighty works, and His words: "Be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

How would you explain the difference between faith and optimism?

ARE YOU BUSY OR FRUITFUL
When I ask my friends "How are you doing," often they say, "I am so busy," as if it's something to be proud of. It often appears that those who feel "very busy " think of themselves as productive. God's Word never tells us to be busy, overworked, or stressed. However, it does tell us to be fruitful.

Being busy is defined as engaged in action or full of activity. Being fruitful is defined as yielding or producing fruit, bringing results. There is a difference. Being busy with what we think we need to do or want to do, doesn't always make us feel good about ourselves.

Jesus said in John 15:16, "I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name" God wants us to enjoy life but He also chose us to go and bear lasting fruit. Many of us struggle with our self-worth. Could it be that obeying God's Word and bearing fruit, not just being busy, could actually affect our self worth?

Our lives are full of many responsibilities, however sometimes we must examine our motives and ask ourselves, "Why am I doing this? " Am I doing it for selfish motives or am I doing it out of obedience to God?"

The first thing we need to do to take control over our time and energy is to learn to use our time wisely. The Holy Spirit is waiting for us to ask Him to show us the changes we need to make for balance in our lives. Each day ask God how He would like you to use your time. When we accomplish His purpose for which He created us, we will be fruitful, resulting in satisfaction.

David tells us in the Psalms blessed is the man who delights in God's Word, meditating on it day and night, and then he will be fruitful and prosperous.

Satan steals our joy if we choose to be too busy instead of fruitful. One of Satan's priorities is to distract us with busyness so we won't spend time with God and not be effective. We will be tired, overworked, and stressed. When we're obedient, fulfilling His purpose, we will be satisfied and fulfilled.

We are responsible for the use of our time and for using it wisely, it is not redeemable. Our good intentions without obedience don't bring satisfaction.

Do I spend my time in ways that fulfill God's purpose? Would God want me to make some adjustments? What specific changes would God want me to make?

A SERVANT HEART
Topic: Matthew 20:28
Before Jesus went to the cross, He gave His disciples an unforgettable lesson in love's humility. The Lord of glory, Maker of worlds, the Firstborn over all creation, bent low before ordinary men, knowing full well that within hours they would desert Him, deny Him or betray Him outright. Without fanfare He washed their feet. It was only when He had finished and had resumed His seat that He made a point of what He had done: "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you" (John 13:14-15, NIV).

When the hatred of others bound Jesus' loving hands so that He could no longer touch the pain of the few, He stretched His bleeding form upon redemption's tree and died a ransom for the many: "Just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:28, NIV). In that act of love's supreme service He called us all to a life of costly caring, "just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God" (Ephesians 5:2, NIV).

THROUGH TROUBLED WATERS
Topic: Psalm 32:1-8
In a blizzard, the familiar disappears because swirling snow blocks our vision. Difficulties bring about the same effect in our minds. They create strong emotions that cloud our ability to think. God has given us some promises to help us find our way through trials.

First, the Lord has committed Himself to instructing us. When we wait on Him, He will give us insight into our situation - since He sees all things, He knows what steps we are to take. We may be surprised at the instruction, though, for His ways are not like our human ones. (Isaiah 55:8 - 9) For example, when people hurt us badly, God's Spirit will remind us that vengeance is the Lord's; our part is to live at peace with them. (Romans 12:17 - 19)

Second, God has promised to teach us how to apply the truth He has given us. As we meditate on Scripture, His Spirit will show us the relevance of God's Word to our problem. Let's imagine we are faced with someone making unreasonable financial demands of us. How are we to respond? God may tell us to meet the request or even to give extra in order to bless that person. (Matthew 5:40 - 41)

Third, the Lord provides guidance as He keeps watch over us. When company is present, a parent may quietly guide a child's behavior through various "looks" in order to encourage, instruct, or warn. In a similar way, the Holy Spirit gives us spiritual promptings to guide our actions and decisions.

What troubled waters are you trying to navigate? These promises are stepping stones to finding your way through those harsh circumstances.

What troubled waters are you trying to navigate?

ISSUES OF TRUST
Topic: Psalm 23
She was six and eager to read to her brother. The 23rd Psalm was written on a card, and as she read, I smiled...

"The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.  He makes me lie down in green pastures, He roasteth my soul..."

The simple error of reading "roasteth" instead of "restoreth" caught my attention. "That's actually the way we view God at times," I thought. Life can heat up with problems and frustrations. Sometimes we begin to see God as one who is roasting our soul, rather than the loving God who seeks to restore our soul.

The day-to-day challenges can weary us and cause our trust in our loving God to falter. We can begin to lose sight of Him as a God who always has our best interests at heart. When we begin to look just at our circumstances, our God begins to look small. When we look to our God as our source of strength, our circumstances tend to fall into perspective.

The difference between seeing our God as trustworthy and ready to restore, versus seeing Him as unconcerned and uncaring, is in our eyesight. It is in the way the eyes of our heart see.

God knows our tendency to look at things through the wrong lens. He encourages us in His Word. Listen...

"I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may

* know the hope to which He has called you

* know the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and

* know His incomparably great power for us who believe!" (Ephesians 1:18,19)

Ask God today to open the eyes of your heart so you may see Him in new ways. He promises to be your hope, your supply and your power. If your trust in God has begun to falter, ask Him today to change your eyesight. Ask Him to help you see Him as He is, a loving God who always has your best interests at heart...a God who can be trusted to restore whatever is lost or broken or hurting in your soul.

Can you pray now for God to open the eyes of your heart, so that you will see and appreciate Him in new and great ways?

Praying on a rooftop in Caesarea, Peter, the apostle of stomp and snort, is hungry, and while he waits for his daily bread to be prepared, he seeks the everlasting bread of life (John 6:48). Deeply submerged in the presence of God, Peter sees a vision of food forbidden.

He recoils, saying, "Surely not, Lord! . . . I have never eaten anything impure or unclean" (Acts 10:14). A heavenly voice says, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean" (Acts 10:15).

Peter's perplexed, but at the same time, God is working his plan. Across town is a centurion seeking the one true God. He is a Gentile; he is, in a figurative sense, food forbidden. But God says to look for a man named Peter; and Peter, still wondering what the vision meant, sees three men from Cornelius approaching on the street below.

The Holy Spirit says to Peter, "Simon, three men are looking for you. So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them" (Acts 10:19-20). Peter follows the men to Cornelius' house and finds a crowd already waiting to hear the good news of Jesus, the Christ.

Cornelius tells Peter that, four days before, God promised to send a messenger. In that instant, Peter knew he was the messenger and that the vision meant the gospel is for all people, even Gentiles.

And as Peter began to tell Cornelius' crowd how to make peace with God, the Holy Spirit descended upon them all, even those who were Gentile.

Oswald Chambers described God as the Great Engineer, creating circumstances to bring about moments in our lives of divine importance, leading us to such divine appointments.

You've seen how God did this in the lives of Peter and Cornelius; will you watch now for how God engineers divine encounters in the life you can no longer call your own?

Do you expect God to be at work in your own life?
