STANDING FIRM IN FAITH

God knows that the spiritual battle rages fiercely and that His children are under attack. What does His Word tell us about the Devil's schemes?

The schemes are well organized. Satan's plans have one purpose: to oppose the Lord. He attempts this by hindering God's children and preventing others from joining God's family. The Greek word for "schemes" is methodea, from which we get our word method. His tactics vary but untruths are a common device because his native language is lying. In fact, Jesus called him the Father of lies. (John 8:44)

The attacks are personal. Ephesians 6:12 describes spiritual warfare as wrestling against evil forces, a picture of hand - to - hand combat. That is very personal. Satan tailors strategies to our weaknesses and seeks to discredit God in the eyes of His church and the world.

The plans are backed by powerful forces. We are battling against a large army - rulers, powers, the dark forces of this world, and the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. (v. 12)

Fortunately, "Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world" (1 John 4:4).

What are we to do against such an enemy? Ephesians 6:13 tells us to stand firm. This is not a passive stance but an active one. It requires remaining alert, praying in the Spirit on all occasions, and wholeheartedly giving ourselves to the Lord's work. (v. 18)

The stronger our faith is, the easier it will be to maintain our position in our spiritual battles. Soldier of God, are you holding firm?

SPIRITUAL WARFARE

As soldiers of the Lord Jesus Christ, we have a mission to help Him liberate others who are still in slavery to sin. (Matthew 28:19 - 20) The Bible tells us that the fighting is fierce, ongoing, and spiritual in nature. We know what Scripture says, but still we wonder:

Is the world really so evil? In every age, people have violated God's commands, and such lawlessness is quite evident today. Men and women do not simply walk away from His standards; they embrace all types of ideologies and cults. When fundamental thinking and attitudes are challenged and changed, the values of subsequent generations are affected. Even childhood, once a time of innocence, has become tainted with children plotting to kill.

Are my family and I in danger? The whole body of Christ is under attack. (1 Peter 5:8) With a purpose of drawing us away from our Savior, the Adversary is determined to defeat believers. He tries to destroy our witness by causing us to doubt God's character, to worry instead of trusting divine promises, and to act hypocritically - saying one thing and doing another.

What hope is there when Satan is working against us? Not only has Jesus secured ultimate victory over Satan, but He has also provided us with what we require for success in our daily struggles. (1 John 5:4) We needn't fear because we have the Father's promises, the Son's prayers, the Holy Spirit's guidance, and spiritual armor to protect us.

We have everything that is necessary to take a stand for Christ. Are you prepared for battle?

THE SHIELD OF FAITH

The apostle Paul wrote about spiritual warfare so we might know our Enemy and how to fight him. He compared the armor and weapons God has given us to the outfitting of a soldier: a helmet to protect our minds, a breastplate to cover our hearts, special shoes to help us stand firm, a belt of God's truth to encircle us, the mighty sword of the Spirit, and the protective shield of faith.

Roman soldiers carried large rectangular shields, which covered the entire body. When facing an attack of flaming arrows, the warriors would stand shoulder to shoulder, with neighboring shields touching. Then, as the enemy's arrows flew toward them, they would kneel in unison with their shields held above them, still in contact with the ones on either side. Nothing could pierce that defense.

This is a picture of how we are to fight when Satan sends flaming darts our way. They enter our life in the form of temptations, doubts, or anxieties - the Devil's combatants shoot these silently and swiftly towards us in the hopes of finding a vulnerable spot. When we maintain our shield of faith in an upright position, the attack fails. However, if we should lower it or fail to stand together as the body of Christ, the missiles penetrate.

Our heavenly Father has provided all that we need to live on a battlefield. He has secured the victory through Jesus Christ, canceled sin's power over us, and given us armor to wear. Our part is to walk by faith, believing God moment by moment. Remember that your faith is your shield. Keep it in good order.

HOW TO INCREASE YOUR FAITH

What are some practical steps you can take to increase your level of faith today?

1. Read the Bible. Romans 10:17 explains, "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ." That is, you must feed your faith a steady diet of God's Word.

2. Exercise your faith. An aspiring bodybuilder doesn't begin by lifting 500 pounds the first day. Rather, he exercises daily, gradually increasing his strength. Regularly exercising faith can bring about similar growth spiritually.

3. Embrace trials. First Peter 1:3 - 9 reveals a shocking truth that adversity, addressed in God's power, creates greater faith. Just as a fire purifies precious metals, hardship strips away all but the pure core of faith.

4. Examine the testimonies of others. An individual's testimony is his own account of God's activity in his life. No one can ever deny, refute, or downplay another's testimony. When you hear of God's mighty deeds in someone else's life, your own faith in Him grows.

5. Pray. You get to know someone by talking to him. That's just what prayer is: your personal communication with God. And don't just talk; be sure to spend time listening. God wants to speak to you.

6. Practice obedience. You will never grow in your faith if you consistently disobey what God tells you to do. Perfect faith is a byproduct of obedience. Put yourself in a position to see God's best for your life, and your faith will soar.

Faith does not increase by accident. Growth takes time, dedication, and intentionality. Ask the Lord to help you exercise your faith today.

THE NEED FOR INCREASED FAITH

Today's passage gives a wonderful exchange between Jesus and His disciples. The Lord made two statements that completely shocked His disciples. In response, they offered only one exclamation: "Increase our faith!" (Luke 17:5) What were the two things that demanded a greater level of personal faithfulness?

First, Jesus warned them that hardships would surely come. In this life, there is no escape from the sorrows of the world. As new believers, many people are shocked to discover that faith in Christ does not eradicate all of the adversity in their lives. Jesus never guaranteed a trouble - free life; in fact, He promised just the opposite. (John 16:33) Committed Christians, therefore, are certain to experience heartaches and disappointments at various times.

Second, Jesus commands total willingness to forgive others: "If your brother . . . repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, 'I repent,' forgive him" (Luke 17:3 - 4).

The "seven times a day" language is an illustration of persistent forgiveness. It is the model by which all believers should live their lives. Christ's forgiveness is limitless. As His followers, who are indwelt by His Spirit, we should strive for that same level of grace in our interactions with others.

Hearing these high ideals, the disciples could make no other comment than "Increase our faith!" They knew the Christian life was beyond their own power; therefore, they asked Jesus to empower them to meet His standard. Are you prepared to make that same request to the Lord today?

HOLDING ON TO OUR HOPE

Bob was a Christian with a secular job who labored daily beside an atheist. To avoid contention, Bob began witnessing only when the atheist opened the conversation to Bob's beliefs or to God.

But there was an undercurrent in their relationship: Bob's co - worker was always negative. The atheist launched his criticism constantly - about everybody and everything.

Bob held up well against his co - worker's attitude for a while. But over time Bob began compromising. The co - worker had criticized Bob and his beliefs so often that Bob was losing sight of the legitimate hopes and dreams Christ had placed in his heart. Eventually, Bob became increasingly critical. Finally, it was difficult for their fellow workers to see much difference between Bob and the atheist.

Criticism is a hope - stealer. It sometimes comes even from well - meaning believers. Yet we always should keep our focus on God. We should give weight to the opinions of others only rarely - and then only when convinced the person giving counsel is godly and walking closely with Jesus.

Hannah's response to her nagging rival was appropriate and God - honoring. She never lost hope, never gave in to her rival's ways. Instead, she earnestly prayed to her heavenly Father and trusted in His perfect answer and timing.

THE KIND OF MOTHER EVERY CHILD NEEDS

God, who understands our limitations and strengths, doesn't expect perfect mothers. However, He has a pattern for believers to follow in order to become the kind of moms children need. Let's look at Hannah's example to discover God's design for mothers:

~ Committed to family. Today when life at home becomes challenging, many people "check out" mentally. Hannah lived with a difficult person who made her miserable. Even with her husband's consolation, every day was a trial. However, she did not waver in her commitment.

~ Finds joy in motherhood. Scripture records Hannah's longings to have a child and her description of Samuel as a gift from God. We must be careful that our words confirm our child's worth and in no way imply, "I did not want you."

~ Tenderly cares for her children. Hannah was devoted to Samuel. Mothers nurture sons and daughters by expressing affirmation, offering words of love, and listening carefully. Inattention causes them to feel unimportant.

~ Offers spiritual training. Moms have an important role in teaching their children to love Jesus with all their heart and obey Him.

~ Lives sacrificially. Hannah voluntarily stayed home with Samuel when her husband went to the temple celebration. Above all, she dedicated the boy's life to God. Christians are to live sacrificially, but mothers are called to a special kind of relinquishment in order to raise godly children.

What can you do to follow God's blueprint for mothers more closely?

TALKING ABOUT THE DA VINCI CODE

May 19, 2006, Columbia Pictures released the $125-million-dollar film, "The Da Vinci Code." Everyone has been talking about Jesus. Already, many have formed their opinion of Jesus based on the novel, "The Da Vinci Code," which has sold more copies than any other fictional work in U.S. history. As the movie is released, Christians worldwide will have a unique opportunity to engage in conversations about Jesus.

We need not fear this dialogue nor be intimidated by it. We do need to be equipped with the historical facts about the authenticity of the Scriptures and the divinity of Jesus. We are reminded...

"...always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence..." (1 Peter 3:13 - 15, NASB)

The 2005 release of "The Passion of the Christ" opened the door for thousands of spiritually hungry people to be introduced to Jesus. Is it obvious that we are in a spiritual battle as this new movie comes with fiction that poses as fact?

Our world is spiritually confused and searching. There are people all around who are looking for answers. Equip yourself. Know where to send them for open and frank discussion of the facts... and pray.

Pray for the moviegoers... that they will question what they see and hear. Pray for truth to be revealed. Pray that they will find the answer to their hearts longing in a relationship with the divine Jesus. Pray that the wealth generated will not be at the expense of the faith of many.

Father God,

We ask for Your truth to be revealed. We ask that this entertainment will propel people to seek out truth; to ask questions and to be drawn to the living Jesus. Give us courage to speak up. Thank You for the resources available and for the people who are ready to engage in this dialogue over the internet. We ask for Your Holy Spirit to be at work in a powerful way in this whole event. In the strong name of the living Jesus we pray, amen.

STANDING ON A FIRM FOUNDATION

When was the last time that you had a Bible study on the topic of feet? In all likelihood, you haven't ever had such a lesson. In fact, you might even be squeamish at the thought of focusing on feet! The apostle Paul, however, was not. He made feet a focal point of one of his most enduring, powerful messages: the discussion in Ephesians 6:10 - 18 about the armor of God. In case you missed it in your reading of today's passage, let's take a closer look.

Four times in four verses (vv. 11 - 14 NIV), Paul declares that the purpose of the armor - the value in putting it on piece by piece - lies in its ability to help us "stand," "stand against the devil's schemes," "stand [our] ground," and "stand firm." And of course, Paul's list of armor would not be complete without the sandals of peace mentioned in verse 15. Clearly, he was concerned with our feet!

The Roman soldier's sandals had an often overlooked feature: a long spike at the heel of the shoe. Its purpose was to allow the warrior to plant his feet firmly in the ground when an opponent approached. With his feet secured in this way, the soldier had an obvious advantage: he would be able to stand his ground. This part of his uniform enabled him to keep his footing even as he faced the danger.

That is precisely what the heavenly Father wants for every one of His children: the ability to stand firm in the face of troubles. This is possible, however, only when we plant our feet on a firm foundation - the foundation of faith in Jesus Christ. Is your faith well grounded?

THE FOUNDATION OF OUR FAITH

Did you ever see an elaborate, masterfully crafted sandcastle? That's one of the most delightful experiences of a trip to the beach - you get to see some beautiful works of art in an unusual form. The best builders are painstaking in every little detail - the towers are straight, the windows are even . . . sometimes the outline of individual bricks can be seen on each wall. The end result is often stunning, rivaling the elegance of homes in the wealthiest neighborhoods of the world.

There's a catch, however. For all its splendor, a sandcastle's hours are numbered. From the moment the first grain of sand is set in place, you can be sure that the miniature building is on its way to oblivion. Within hours, the details are destroyed. Wind, rain, the tide, and overanxious spectators can wreck in seconds what took hours to create. There is simply no future for a house of sand.

Sometimes a believer's faith is like a sandcastle. Even though everything looks perfect on the outside, the slightest nudge from the elements can bring the whole thing crashing down. An unexpected hardship, an unkind word from a friend, a health or financial crisis . . . and faith turns to rubble. How can that be possible?

Weak foundations produce weak faith. If your life of faith is centered around church attendance, ministry work, discipleship programs, and other seemingly "good" things, then your sandcastle is on its way down. Only a faith built on the rock - solid foundation of Jesus Christ - and Christ alone - can withstand the winds of adversity.

THE EXPRESSION OF FAITH

People put their trust in different things. Some place faith in the Lord; others trust in themselves or another person. Faith can even be placed in relationships, money, or politics. Anytime we put absolute trust in something, we demonstrate faith. So, the question isn't, Do I have any faith? but rather, In what have I placed my faith? Looking at that question honestly will shake up your assumptions about your spiritual life.

An old saying explains, "Faith gives feet to belief." Simply put, this means that faith is the active expression of what you believe about God. If you have the idea that He sits in some far - off place called "heaven" and only halfheartedly listens to your prayers, then that will reveal itself in your day - to - day walk of faith. Your God will seem small, powerless, and disinterested. The result will be a string of seemingly unanswered prayers and a general sense of defeat.

If, on the other hand, you believe that God is right beside you, whispering in your ear, pouring out His Holy Spirit upon you - and that He is intimately familiar and concerned with the minutiae of your life - then such a belief will impact your faith walk. Prayer will be a joyful exchange between cherished friends, and the evidence of our heavenly Father's miraculous power will become commonplace in your daily life.

Weak faith says, "God can." Great faith says, "God will." But perfect faith - godly faith - says, "It's done." Your faith is your testimony. What does your faith say about God?

WHAT IT MEANS TO PRAY IN FAITH

Have you ever - even subconsciously - accused the Lord of not answering your prayers? When you face a troubling time in which God doesn't seem to respond to your petitions, the first thing you should do is take a good look at the message of your prayer. Are you truly praying in faith, trusting your heavenly Father to work a miracle, or are you simply complaining to Him about everything that has gone wrong? Think about whether you have prayed like this:

"Oh God, the situation at my workplace is just terrible. My coworker shouldn't treat me in this manner. I go out of my way to help him, but he just walks all over me. I never get any appreciation. I never get any recognition for what I do. I never get what I deserve. I, I, I. . . me ,me, me."

Sound familiar? You've most likely lifted up such a prayer at some point. And when you have, you no doubt found that this kind of praying does not bring about miraculous, sweeping change. Why is that? The answer is in the focus, which in this case is "self." So, what would be the object of faith in this prayer? "Self." That's not the prayer of faith that the Lord Jesus told us about.

Praying in faith means earnestly seeking the Lord's wisdom and power for your life. It means laying down any claims you have - any personal motivations and complaints - and surrendering yourself fully to whatever He has for you. When you move yourself out of the way, you give God room to maneuver. And that's when you'll see His power displayed.

MAINTAINING A SPIRIT - FILLED LIFE

Christian psychologist Bill Gillham reminds Christians that they are not fighting an inner civil war. Though it seems a battle rages between our old man and new man, Gillham says this belief is a trick of the devil.

Romans 7:20 - 23 is the ammunition Gillham uses to explain this truth. In this passage, the apostle Paul explains that it is not our old selves we are fighting but a "a different law in the members of my body," which is sin, "waging war against the law of my mind. . . ." The enemy is attacking our minds!

T. W. Hunt writes: "Philippians 2:5 tells us that we are to have the mind of Christ. This verse is part of a poem (Phil. 2:5-11) that was originally a hymn. This verse says that we are to think like Jesus thinks. In the original Greek, the command is in the form of the verb phroneite, the plural imperative of the verb phroneo, ?to think or to be minded in a certain way.' Our mind is to have the same characteristics that Christ's mind has. . . ."

"The spiritual mind will develop in the same way that a little child's mind develops. Even at spiritual birth, we have the ?mind of Christ' (1 Cor. 2:16), but in subsequent growth that mind must contend with established habits, the culture in which we live, and the work of Satan. In us, the mind of Christ matures in a process of growth."

BLESSED MOTHERHOOD

The last few verses of Proverbs 31 offer an encouraging message: Women who have submitted to God's plan and yielded to the Spirit's transforming work will reap a plentiful harvest. What does this fruitfulness look like?

~ Verse 28: "Her children rise up and bless her." What a sweet reward it is for mothers to hear adult children say, "We are grateful for the way you raised us." Some might express thanks for their mother's love and acceptance; others might feel appreciative for discipline, prayers, or lessons about how to follow God. Regardless of the words they use, the impact on Mom will be the same: great joy. Sacrifice and hard work are required to raise children the Lord's way, but such a lifestyle will lead to a place of deep satisfaction.

~ Verse 28: "Her husband also . . . praises her." Spouses know the best and worst about each other. But when women allow the Spirit to change them, He will also prompt husbands to show honor to their wives.

~ Verse 30:"A woman who fears the Lord . . . shall be praised." Not only do children and husbands acknowledge a mother's value; so does God. He is pleased when she believes Him, follows His plan, and lives unselfishly.

~ Verse 31: "Let her works praise her." The Lord will cause others to recognize how godly mothers have lived, serving not only their own families but also people in the community. Their example will inspire others to reach out.

Each acclamation a mother receives becomes an opportunity to testify that the Lord accomplished it all. It is exciting to let one's life testify to Him!

PRECIOUS FAITH

Our tested faith is more precious than perishable gold. The more coins we spend, the fewer we have, but our assurance in God never runs out as we use it. Men are often impoverished by the quest for gold, but faith can only enrich a person. And while money may temporarily appease one's greed, trust in Jesus forever satisfies the soul.

Gold doesn't begin its life as the pure, shiny material we see in jewelry. Instead, miners drag out hunks of dirty metal with bits of black running throughout. Before a piece of gold can become a beautiful necklace or a perfectly shaped coin, it must be refined by fire and crafted with tools. In the same way, God sends trials into Christians' lives to shape His children. His ultimate goal is to transform each believer into the likeness of Jesus Christ.

God uses many tools in His transforming work - disappointment, broken relationships, illness, and financial problems are a few. He always chooses the device that will build our faith in the area He is focused upon. Unlike inanimate gold, we have a choice to accept or reject His work. We can whine, resist, and give up without making any changes. But let this be fair warning: God will return repeatedly to a faith area that needs His attention until we finally submit. He loves us too much to leave us in our imperfect condition.

Our faith is precious to God. Though His work is sometimes painful, He will never challenge us beyond what we can stand. (1 Corinthians 10:13) And through the refining fire and shaping process, the Master Craftsman holds us closely.

WHY GOD TRIES OUR FAITH

A good reporter asks six basic questions when investigating a story: Who? What? Where? When? Why? and How? With regard to growing faith, we already know the answer to some of those questions. God builds our trust anywhere and anytime. Today we will focus on why strong faith is important to the Lord.

~ Faith trials draw our attention to Him. Sometimes worldly pursuits coax us to drift away from Jesus. If we encounter a situation for which we have no solution, our wandering focus snaps back to Him as we begin to pray and look for a way out of the trial.

~ Faith trials teach endurance. We develop the stamina to bear up under heavy loads without discouragement because we trust that God will see us through. He increases our capacity by applying slight pressure. When we prove we can handle a little, He adds more, constantly working on our witness till we shine like gold.

~ Faith trials train us for higher service. We must endure and keep our attention on Him so that we are prepared to work anywhere in His kingdom. God designs opportunities for every believer, shifting us to greater areas of service as we grow in faith.

~ Faith trials glorify God. The greatest praise we can give to our heavenly Father is to walk hopefully through a dark valley. We are a living example of His faithfulness and trustworthiness for everyone to see.

As our faith increases, others witness the reality of Christ in our life. We also benefit personally by having greater confidence and anticipation of His blessing.

FAITH ON TRIAL

Some days we feel as if our faith is on trial and Satan is running a cross - examination that challenges our confidence in God. But the only important question is this: Are you going to believe what the Lord says, no matter what He allows into your life?

The heavenly Father always has a purpose for testing believers' faith. He stretches us so that we will have a greater capacity to serve Him. Though we may sometimes feel we are at our limit, the process actually occurs gently, like stretching a new rubber band a little at a time. With each extension, we are able to accomplish more for His glory.

It is often easy to trust God for certain things more than others, but He desires our complete dependence, regardless of the situation. That is why He will test His children in the same area repeatedly until they can successfully bear up under the pressure. Afterward, they will be able to testify to non - Christians about what the Bible says and also about their own experience of divine help in dark valleys.

We will taste both success and failure as our faith is in the process of growing. The disciple Peter had a share of both. But each time the Lord stretched him, his capacity for service became greater. In the book of Acts, it is Peter who fearlessly preaches at Pentecost and also heals a lame man without a shred of doubt. (Acts 2:14 - 36; 3:1 - 7)

Our faith will be put on trial. If we are wise believers, we will respond by trusting God to stretch and develop our conviction until we are the men and women He desires us to be.

NEVER GIVE UP

Winston Churchill, the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister during World War II, included a now - famous quote in a speech to students of his former school: “Never give in - never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty… Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”

As Christians, we are called to wait on God until He acts on our behalf. In order to resist the urge to give up, we must not focus on our circumstances. (Hebrews 11:17) says that Moses endured his trials “as seeing Him who is unseen” - he consistently looked for God and His will. Standing on the shore of the Red Sea while the Egyptians prepared an attack, Moses clung to God’s promise of protection and called out, “Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the LORD” (Exodus 14:13). The sea parted and the Israelites escaped what seemed to be an impossible situation.

Moses triumphed over many dangerous and difficult situations because he was committed to doing God’s work. Too often modern believers are devoted to pleasure, comfort, or our “rights.” When the Lord’s will interferes with those priorities, we falter. But a genuine commitment to God with no exceptions means nothing can induce us to give up.

Our unchanging Lord never deserts His children; He encourages us to cast our cares on Him. (Hebrews 13:5, 8; 1 Peter 5:7) These beautiful assurances are ours to claim when we are tempted to quit. Put your faith in Him, cling to His promises, and commit to His way. Never give up!

THE FAITH TO HOLD OUT

Sometimes our life seems like a long, dark tunnel. Perhaps we are unable to discover a solution for a problem, or we cannot find relief from pain. Regardless of the direction we turn, we find no hope for anything better than our present circumstances.

Thankfully, we serve a God who feels our pain and knows our limitations first - hand. Jesus Christ walked through the valley of the shadow of death and cried out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”(Mark 15:34). This means that when our faith is stretched to the breaking point, our strength is exhausted, and our dreams are broken like shattered glass, Jesus understands. And He asks us to hold out when everything in us screams to give up.

Giving up means abandoning God’s help for our own puny strength. We try to manipulate a situation or simply avoid pain. In essence, we’re choosing to believe that Satan in his worldly power is stronger than Christ within us - which is the exact opposite of what the Bible says is true. (1 John 4:4) Of course, the Devil is not more powerful, but we let him win a battle if we give up on the assurance that God will see us through difficulty. When we have that attitude, we miss the Father’s blessing and limit our usefulness in His kingdom.

Even when we cannot detect His involvement, God is working every moment on our problem. But we must trust His perfect timing for revealing the answer. Your Father knows your hurt, and He will bring you through that dark tunnel. Do not give up before reaching His blessing.

STAGES OF OUR CHRISTIAN LIFE

Just like us, the early church faced many trials and heartaches. Persecution of Christians was ever on the increase. In writing to the churches, Peter admonished believers to be diligent in their faith and secure in the peace of God. But how can we be peaceful in restless times? And how can we remain hopeful when injustice is increasing?

The answer is found by looking at the object of your affection. What gets most of your attention? If your mental focus is set on the difficulty of your circumstances, then more than likely you will struggle with maintaining a good attitude and an awareness of God’s presence. But if your attention is centered on Christ and the promises He provides in His Word, then you will experience a residing peace that lingers deep inside.

Perhaps your life has gotten off course. You find yourself complaining to God and wishing you were in a different set of circumstances. God has a plan for you right where you are.

The Christian life is a process. We learn as we grow through life’s difficulties, and God uses each one to teach us more about His faithful love and care. If you have drifted in your devotion toward Him, go to Him in prayer and confess your wayward attitude. Then ask Him to restore the sweetness and joy of the fellowship you once shared with Him.
