PRAYER FOR ...STRENGTH

"I pray that out of his glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ and to know this love that surpasses knowledge -- that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God" (Ephesians 3: 16 -- 19).

~Father God,

I need to be strengthened with power today. I am weak and my heart sometimes grows weary.

By faith I ask that Your Spirit will pour Your strength into me from the glorious resources that flow from You.

Help my heart to be firmly grounded in the knowledge of Your love for me. Banish the doubts that want to filter into my mind and rob me.

Help me to live my life as one firmly established and anchored in Your great love.

Release me from powerless living that tries to pour out to others from an empty cup.

Grant me power to grasp Your measureless love and to share its amazing embrace with others.

Fill me with Your fullness today so that I may overflow to the world around me.

Open my eyes to simple, practical ways to show Your love to those you have placed in my life.

In Jesus' strong name I pray, amen.

"O Lord, You have searched me and you know me.

You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar.

You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways.

Before a word is on my tongue You know it completely, O Lord.

You hem me in - behind and before; You have laid your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from Your spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there Your hand will guide me; Your right hand will hold me fast.

For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb."

~Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this knowledge that You care so deeply and know me so intimately. I will trust in Your knowledge of me and in Your hand to guide me.

Give me Your wisdom today. Hold on to me in my spinning world. Thank You for understanding me. You know me better than I know myself. Thank You for this comfort.

PRAYER OF THE AUTHENTIC CHRISTIAN

"Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary?  Who may live on your holy hill?

"He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous,

"who speaks the truth from his heart and has no slander on his tongue,

"who does his neighbor no wrong and cast no slur on his fellowman,

"who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the Lord,

"who keeps his oath even when it hurts,

"who lends his money without interest and does not accept a bribe against the innocent.

"He who does these things will never be shaken."

Prayer to action this in my life

~Father God,

Thank you that You so clearly spell out what an authentic Christian looks like. I want to live in Your presence. I want to feel Your nearness as I journey through my days. Please help me to walk in the power of Your Holy Spirit. That is the only way I can even attempt to walk blamelessly and righteously.

Help me today to speak truthfully in all things and to keep my mouth free from words that do not build others up. Help me to refrain from comments that cast a negative light on another.

Father, help me to honor other believers even when I don't particularly agree with them or even like them. Help me to honor them because they are Your children too.

May I be a person of my word and generous in all my ways. May my feet be planted solidly on You today, my Rock and my Shield. "May my life be my worship" today.

PRAYER TO DISCERN WHAT IS BEST

Paul, praying for the believers said,

"And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you maybe able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ - to the glory and praise of God" (Philippians 1:15).

~Father God,

I ask right now that You would help me to grow in understanding of Your love and how Your truth can help me avoid error in my own life.

Father, help me to discern what is best and give me strength to follow that course. 

Help me to keep my heart pure in thought and attitude and to live my life in such a way that I cast no shadow on Your name. 

May my life reflect the love of Jesus, may I share His joy and bring His peace into areas of conflict.

May I be patient with those who I find abrasive and be gentle in return.

May I reflect Your goodness to others and share my faith in You.

Let my life be marked by a humility that shows my confidence is in You and not in my own wisdom. Let my life proclaim who my God is!!

~Father God,

My hearts fills with gratitude as I focus on Your holy name. Thank you for all the wonderful benefits I have in You. Your many sided name reveals them to me.

I have the benefit of You as

- my rock and my redeemer,

- my anchor,

- my shelter,

- my strong tower,

- my comfort,

- my deliverer,

- my helper,

- my sovereign and

THE MAGNIFYING GLASS

It sat by Dad's table... a large magnifying glass to help him read the newspaper. Without it his focus was limited to headlines with no depth to understanding the stories.

Dad's magnifying glass gave me a fresh perspective as I read this verse from God's Word...

"I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving" (Psalm 69:30).

Often we are told to praise the Lord even when things are not going as we would like, even in the midst of difficult days. It can sound trite, impractical and even impossible. Sometimes it can be downright annoying and glib when someone reminds us to "Praise the Lord" when we wait for answers to the question marks in our lives.

Just how do we praise the Lord when our heart is discouraged and our feelings just aren't into it? God's Word tells us how...

"praise the name of God...magnify Him".

God isn't asking us to be happy about difficult circumstances and hard places. Rather, He is reminding us of the layers of insight, wisdom and strength we find as we focus on His name. He reminds us to hold the magnifying glass on Him rather than on where we are at the moment.

The Hebrew names of God that we find in the Bible truly do magnify all He wants to be for us ... today... right where we are. Listen and let your heart be refreshed as you go beyond the headline of "God is Good" or "God is Loving" and focus on understanding the depth of the story.

? El - Shaddai -- The God Who is sufficient to meet the needs of His people.

Father God, thank you that You are enough to meet the needs I have today. Please be sufficient for me as I bring my neediness to you right now. Stop and put into words the present neediness of your own heart and mind and emotions and lift it to Him to fill.

? Jehovah Rohi -- The Lord our Shepherd

Thank you, Father God, that You are my shepherd. The 23rd Psalm reminds me that You will lead me beside quiet waters and restore my soul. You will settle my spirit as I recall how close You do walk with me... gently guiding me and protecting me even through the valleys.

? Jehovah - Shalom -- The Lord our Peace

Father God, there is little peace around me. In the world at large and in my own little world peace is too often a fleeting or illusive thing. Please bring Your peace into my heart and my situations. I can muster up little on my own. Today I choose to hold the magnifying glass on Your Peace and Your peaceful nature and I ask You to put Your umbrella of peace over me and my household today.

? Jehovah - Tsidkenu - The Lord our Righteousness

Father in Heaven, I see my failures and inadequacies so well today. They weigh me down. Yet You say You are my Righteousness. You cover over all my weak places with Your strength. You cover over all my failures with Your compassion. You see me, not as I am, but with the eyes of Love. You cover me over with Your righteousness. Thank you that You pick me up, dust me off and help me on. Fill me afresh with Your Spirit today.

Thankfulness wells up within us as we focus on the name of our God and magnify Him in all He is and all He longs to be for us as we walk this journey.

Take your praise to a new level. Put your magnifying glass on all God is.  Ask Him to layer your understanding of Him in new ways. Even in the trying times of life you will feel His anchor holding you and the steadfast surety of all He is steadying you.

STANDING TOGETHER IN A DECEITFUL WORLD

As believers indwelt by the Holy Spirit, we all belong to God's family and have a special relationship with one another. We are spiritual brothers and sisters, called by God to live in loving agreement with one another.

Unity in the church occurs when believers live in submission to the Holy Spirit and let Him control attitudes, emotions, and actions. By surrendering the "outward things" that we value about our church - such as its worship style, appearance, and programs offered - we position ourselves to be in one accord with our fellow believers. How can we learn to lay aside our own goals and preferences in order to help our spiritual family? By remembering how precious we are to the Lord and how important others are to Him as well.

Not only is the concept of surrender vital for unity; it is also a key element of love. Biblical love - in Greek, agape - willingly sacrifices so that someone else might benefit. It is the "super glue" that keeps the body of Christ together and enables us to put the interests of others ahead of our own. (Colossians 3:14)

Furthermore, within any fellowship, there exists a variety of opinions on many different topics. Diligence and cooperation, along with lots of love - a divinely given fruit of the Spirit - are necessary to preserve the peace. (Ephesians 4:3; Galatians 5:22 - 23)

When we know what we believe and are knitted together in love, error has difficulty penetrating, and false teachers do not stay around. In light of some differences of opinion among believers you know, how might you show love to your spiritual family?

A FAITHFUL CHURCH IN AN UNGODLY WORLD

A church is able to stand firm against error and ungodly influences when Christians know what they believe and are unified in love. One other helpful characteristic is that they walk steadily by faith.

Just as our salvation came through belief and not feelings, our Christian life is to be lived in the same way. Living God's way is contrary to the world's mode of operating, which tells us that independence is of great value. The Lord declares that our life is to be marked by submission to Him. Society promotes self assurance and a reliance on what we can see. Scripture reveals the foolishness of depending solely on our circumstances or other people. Instead, our confidence is to be placed in Jesus, and we are to rely on Him alone.

We all need daily spiritual nourishment directly from God's Word if we are to maintain a godly lifestyle. Through study and application -  both individually and corporately - we will learn how to replace human thinking with the Lord's wisdom, draw on His strength, and make Him the center and substance of our life and our church. When we are deeply rooted and built up in Christ, false doctrine and error will "go in one ear and out the other."

Gratitude is an extra layer of protection for the believer. When we focus on the goodness of God and praise Him for His blessings, the Enemy cannot easily distract us with lies.

With our church body knitted together in love, unified, and walking by belief in Jesus, we will be immovable in our faith. Does this describe you and your church? If not, pray to become a faithful fellowship.

BEING CHRIST'S CHURCH IN A DECEITFUL SOCIETY

As has been true of every age, erroneous thinking is prevalent today. For the church to be able to withstand the bombardment of false teaching, we must have:

Strong Convictions. Teachers of incorrect doctrine can be very persuasive as they lead unsuspecting listeners into wrong thinking, confusion, and discouragement. In contrast, true doctrine strengthens and encourages. For example, since salvation is by faith in Christ alone, works are an expression of faith, not a requirement for heaven (Ephesians 2:8 - 10); there is no condemnation for those who belong to Jesus, because the penalty for our sins - past, present, and future - has been paid (Romans 8:1; Colossians 1:14 NLT); and our adoption into the heavenly Father's family is permanent. (Ephesians 1:5)

A deepening relationship with Jesus. To HOLD FIRM TO THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL,we must be settled in our understanding of who Christ is. Though some claim Jesus was a good person or perhaps even a prophet, we know He is fully God, who existed before Creation and came to earth to rescue mankind. Others will argue that Jesus is not the only way to the Father. But they fail to understand that reconciliation with God requires that sin's penalty be paid in full by one who is sinless. Only Jesus, the perfect Son of Man, could meet God's requirement. That is why Jesus called Himself the "door" through which we enter God's family. (John 10:9)

A clear understanding of Scripture will enable us to distinguish truth from error. How firmly grounded are you and your church family in the Bible's key doctrines?

OVERCOMING DISTRACTIONS

In our daily lives, distractions bombard us. Gossip. Criticism. Financial pressure. Poor health. Conflict. Personal desires. Effusive praise from others. Any of these can cause us to turn away from God's perfect plan. As a role model, Nehemiah shows us the value of . . .

Single - mindedness. Nehemiah feared the Lord and conscientiously applied himself to His work. He did not have a divided mind. By setting our attention solely on God's plan, our minds will stay fixed on the task, regardless of the difficulties.

God's favor. The Lord's blessing is always upon us when we are obedient to Him. This knowledge should bring us confidence in hard times, just as it did for Nehemiah.

Accountability. Nehemiah had to report to the king about what he had accomplished. One day we will stand before Jesus, our King, and give an account for how we used our resources and gifts. (1 Corinthians 3:12 - 15)

Consistency in our prayer life. When the Israelites were ridiculed, they were helpless to stop their opponents' speech. So Nehemiah prayed, and the people received strength to continue. As the plotting worsened, Nehemiah and his fellow workers cried out to God, who not only frustrated the enemies' plans but also provided His people with discernment about how to avoid their traps.

Nehemiah completed the ambitious project in a short 52 days. When we follow his example, God can accomplish great things in and through us. Which of the above points from Nehemiah's life can help you overcome what distracts you?

DEALING WITH DISTRACTIONS

When Nehemiah was cupbearer to the king, his heart was deeply stirred over the Israelites' plight in Jerusalem and the condition of their city. With the king's permission, he set out to rebuild Jerusalem. He encountered numerous obstacles but refused to let them distract him from the task. From his example, we learn the importance of . . .

Being in the center of God's will. When Nehemiah cried out to God about his brothers in Jerusalem and the disreputable state of the city, the Lord showed him exactly what to do. God also caused the king to be favorably disposed toward the request and to provide everything needed. Knowing we are where God wants us to be will give us confidence to move through trials without being sidetracked.

Remembering what the goal is. Nehemiah knew that the Lord's priority for him was to rebuild the city. God has planned things for us to do, too, and His work is always of great value. We are not to underestimate our part in it, no matter how small it seems to us.

Accomplishing each task. Following every crisis, Nehemiah returned to the task at hand. By remembering the Lord's goal, we will stay in our God - appointed place, carry out each step, and not get off course.

Accurately identifying our distractions. Those who seek to interrupt our work, divert our attention, or attack us personally are NOT from God. With the Father's help, Nehemiah recognized whom to heed and whom to ignore.

For the most part, distractions predominantly originate outside of ourselves. WHO or WHAT usually distracts you?

THE CHALLENGE

Did Paul ever face feelings of discouragement? Yes. In 2 Corinthians 1:8, we read that the trials he faced were so horrendous that he thought he might lose his life. Paul learned to live above his circumstances, and you can too. Here is how he did it:

~ Focus on God and not the problem. As you deal with life's trials keep the eyes of your heart focused on Jesus Christ. He has the sovereign ability to handle whatever you are facing. When you relinquish control, God is free to work in a miraculous way.

~ Focus on the sovereignty of God and not on the will of man. Seeking the counsel of others always is a wise idea, and the Bible supports this. However, be sure what your friends tell you aligns with God's Word, which is your ultimate authority. Seek godly counsel from others but make sure that you do what King David did: He spent time alone with God in prayer. The Bible says he "sat before the Lord" (2 Samuel 7:18). God reveals Himself to those who seek His face.

~ Focus on positive results and not personal pain. No one enjoys hardship. However, when trials come ask the Lord to show you what He wants you to learn from the situation and how you can apply those lessons to your life. Paul lived above his circumstances because his focus was set on the Savior and not on the trial. As a result, he gained a tremendous victory.

REASONS FOR TAKING RISKS

In the first chapter of Joshua, God delivers the greatest "pep talk" in all of Scripture. Moses had just died, and now his successor was called upon to lead the nation of Israel into the Promised Land - a military action that would surely involve significant risk. Joshua was no doubt unsettled by the prospects of facing such a strong army. Therefore, the Lord spoke words of encouragement to him that still ring true for us today.

What would have happened if Joshua had refused this daunting assignment? Most likely, the nation of Israel would have languished in the desert indefinitely. Fortunately, this leader was a man of great faith and courage, and he boldly took up the cause of God.

Like Joshua, we face daily obstacles that seem to push our faith to the breaking point. And yet, it is in the throes of adversity that God hones our faith. (James 1:2 - 4) When we refuse to follow Him into risky situations, the results can be devastating to our spiritual growth. Consider the consequences of disobedience on your life:

1. You will never become the person that God wants you to be.

2. You limit your usefulness to God.

3. You are willing to live a life of rationalized disobedience.

4. You'll be governed by fear rather than faith.

5. You risk losing not only rewards in heaven but also blessings on earth.

Are you in some way refusing God's call? The Lord is trustworthy. Whatever His plan of action for you, be assured He will see you safely through the ordeal.

LETTING GO OF OUR PROCRASTINATING WAYS

We like to think that our delaying tactics are no big deal. After all, we tell ourselves, no one is really hurt by the things we put off. Over time, however, our choices to postpone action can develop into a lifelong pattern of procrastination. The ruler Felix delayed making a decision about Christ and eventually turned away completely.

To get on track, we must change our attitude about procrastination, admitting it is a serious problem and noticing where we consistently put off action. It's important to identify feelings of doubt and discomfort we may have, confess that procrastination has a hold on us, and then decide in our hearts to turn away from it. Tell God, "I want to live by Your schedule and please You by my obedience."

Repentance should be joined by a commitment to actively embrace new ways of decisive living. USE GOD's WORD to fight against feelings of doubt and discomfort whenever they arise. Who we are in Christ and who He is to us are the truths needed to overcome bad habits. The Bible says that we are new creations, indwelt by God's Holy Spirit, and we are no longer slaves to sin. (Galatians 5:1) Jesus, our Savior, is also our Lord. He provides all we need through His resurrection power. (2 Peter 1:3) His grace turns our weakness into strength. (2 Corinthians 12:9). Victory is ours through Him. (Romans 8:37)

When we order our lives on the BASIS OF SCRIPTURE, we will live by faith rather than feelings. Jesus offers to set us free from the bondage of procrastination. Don't put off accepting His invitation!

COMMON AREAS OF PROCRASTINATION

God has prepared work He wants us to do, and our delays in carrying out His plan constitute disobedience. That makes habitual procrastination a serious problem.

As Christians,we not only put off daily Bible reading and tithing, but we also delay . . .

Serving in the church. We promise to be available to work, but when the call comes, we say no. If asked, we might reply it is the length of service that doesn't suit us. At other times we say the position itself is disagreeable to us. In both cases, if we examine our feelings, we will find we are dodging what we do not like or feel inadequate to do.

Sharing our faith. We can get very anxious about how to express ourselves, what reaction we'll get, and whether we'll be able to answer questions adequately. When insecurity threatens us, we often choose silence and inactivity.

Surrendering our will to the Lord's. Just thinking about giving God control in certain areas makes many of us feel fearful. So we cling to our way and avoid His. True submission says, "Lord, I am willing to do whatever You want in this situation. I will obey Your Word."

After a while, because of our procrastinating ways, our spiritual growth becomes inhibited. Then our usefulness to the Lord and our sense of joy in Him diminish.

The Lord has asked us to be His ambassadors, who represent Him to a hurting world according to His plan and timetable. (2 Corinthians 5:20) Therefore, procrastination has no place in the believer's life. Which areas of your life does this bring to mind?

UNDERLYING CAUSES OF PROCRASTINATION

Ever wonder why you do not make that crucial decision in your life? Or what keeps you from following through on chores at home or projects at work? The most common excuse for procrastinating is, "I'm too busy right now." The real reasons for repeated delays come not from an outside source but from our own thinking. Procrastination occurs when we want to avoid discomfort or self - doubt.

Let's consider two areas where Christians commonly procrastinate. The first is Scripture reading. For some of us, uncertainty about where to begin or what method to follow can make us feel inadequate. To avoid this uncomfortable emotion, we may stop trying to figure it out. Or, if we do meditate on a Bible passage, the Holy Spirit might point out ungodly attitudes and behaviors in our lives that the Lord wants to change. Then emotions of embarrassment, inadequacy, or shame can surface. To get rid of such uneasy feelings, we simply stop reading.

Avoidance is also too common a practice in the area of tithing. Giving generously to God usually means cutting back on some areas of spending. That can make us feel insecure because we think, How will I live without ___? Most of us wish we had more disposable income, not less; so our mind plays a little trick and tells us, It will be easier to do it next week. But seven days later, it is the same story.

Think about the things you've been putting off. Ask yourself, How competent do I feel to do those tasks? and What negative emotions do I feel in connection with them? Then pray for God to direct you.

CHARACTERISTICS OF GODLY LIVING

The culture we live in places great emphasis on physical fitness. However, the Word of God tells us that "physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things." 1 Timothy 4:8

There is a simple way to grow in godliness: give Scripture priority in both your personal and professional life. You will know that you have given the Word its proper place when your time of biblical meditation brings deeper satisfaction than your other pleasures. The more you allow scriptural principles to shape your decision - making, the more you will be like a tree firmly planted by a stream, able to withstand the storms of life. (Psalm 1:3) Besides being continually nourished and strengthened, you will also produce abundant spiritual fruit. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Indications that you are maturing in godliness include: accepting God's pruning in order to have increased fruitfulness; demonstrating the patience to live by His timetable; investing yourself professionally and personally for the benefit of others; and being content, even when circumstances are less than optimal. In addition, long periods of worry will diminish, but when fear does arise, you will rest in God's sufficiency. (Philippians 4:13)

As we frame our viewpoint with biblical principles, adjust our behavior to the Lord's standards, and invest ourselves in the life in others, godliness will characterize us more and more. The heavenly Father is pleased as His children's resemblance to Jesus becomes increasingly noticeable. Let's pursue Christlikeness with all our strength.

FAILURE: THE FIRST STEP TO VICTORY

Paul tried to do the right thing, but, like us, sometimes he failed. In his letter to the Romans, Paul seems to agonize over his inability to triumph over sin at every confrontation in his life.

Don't we all feel like Paul at times? We want to do what's right, but our actions don't always represent our true desires.

However, Paul learned that failure shouldn't be condemning - in fact, it taught him one invaluable lesson: "Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong" (2 Corinthians. 12:10).

Here are some things to remember about defeat:

1) Defeat is often engineered by God. God isn't after self - improvement. He is after death - death to our flesh, which leads to life in Him.

2) Defeat is often essential for God to fulfill His purposes in our lives. When we are broken to the point that the only place we can look is up - and see Him - then we begin to see the purposes and plans He has for our lives.

3) Defeat exposes our weaknesses and inadequacies. Our best efforts never match what God can - and wants - to do in us and through us.

Defeat in our lives doesn't mean we are defeated. It's merely God's way of pointing us to ultimate victory.

THE CHARACTER OF A GODLY MAN

WANTED: Christian men willing to answer the Lord's call to live godly lives in an unrighteous world. A man with this mindset will understand the importance of:

Ordering his life with Christian counsel. A God - fearing man is not too self - sufficient or proud to ask for help. He seeks biblical counsel regularly so that he can succeed according to God's principles. He is open to advice based on scriptural truths, whether for his home life, personal finances, or business matters. Many of us, however, are prone to seek opinions from those who appear successful, even if they do not share our faith. How wise can ungodly men be when they have chosen to live without God? How smart are we when we seek their advice?

Limiting his deepest friendships to fellow believers. Only the like - minded - those who love Jesus and desire to follow Him - are suitable to be intimate friends of a believer. Remember, our companions can influence us positively or negatively. Those who reject Jesus will never guide us toward Him. Those who are casual in their faith can influence us away from God's standards. While the Lord expects us to relate to all sorts of people, it is wise to restrict our "inner circle" to Christ - followers.

Being committed to defending the truth. Concerned with the things of the Lord and His church, a godly man will take a stand against the profane use of Jesus' name. Not only will he speak the truth about unrighteous patterns of behavior and their destructiveness; he will also oppose ridicule of the Bible or other Christians.

MEN, THE LORD CALLS YOU TO GODLINESS. WILL YOU SAY YES?

THE POWER OF UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

"Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart." Colossians 3:21

Expressing unconditional love empowers parents to raise kids to be confident adults. By accepting each child's unique nature, we lay a foundation for good self - esteem. Too often we unintentionally inflict damage on a young one's ego by confusing actions with personhood - a child might hear criticism as "I'm bad" rather than "my behavior was wrong." Children desperately need parental guidance and discipline, but these must be wrapped in actions and language that convey love.

The alternative - correcting a child with the aim of making him or her the adult Mom or Dad desires instead of the person God intends - promotes a rebellious spirit. Think of the popular child - rearing axiom "Pick your battles" more in these terms: "Pick the battles that affect the child's soul." Passing fads and weird clothing or hair choices are not worthy battles, but issues related to honesty, integrity, and obedience call for a parent's guidance.

The result of unconditional love and its byproducts - self - esteem and obedience - is that children develop good relationships. They will be prepared to accept others with the same attitude their parents showed them. This is critical because a wounded child will one day struggle to express wholehearted love to a marriage partner or to receive it in return.

Conveying acceptance to a child doesn't cost money, but it does take time. Parents love their kids through actions and attitudes - taking an interest in a child's activities, listening with focused attention, offering encouragement, and looking for traits to praise. Do your kids know you love them?
