LIVING IN THE CENTER OF GOD's WILL

Our three-in-one God has the right to plan our lives because of who He is and what He has done. As Creator, He has fashioned us in the womb. (Psalm 139:13) As Sustainer, He causes our hearts to beat and our bodies to function.

Jesus is our Redeemer, who released us from bondage to sin. He purchased our freedom with His shed blood. He is the Savior who rescued us from an eternity of punishment. He is also our Counselor, from whom we receive wisdom and understanding. Jesus is also our Guide who directs us perfectly since He sees all. (Hebrews 4:13) As our Provider, He knows what is best for us in every situation and gives us just what we need. (James 1:17)

Yet throughout history, many have chosen to resist His will. For example, the unbelieving and fearful Israelites turned away from entering the Promised Land. (Numbers 14:1 - 4) King Solomon disregarded God's instructions about marriage. And, Jonah refused to witness to Nineveh. God allowed them to rebel, but He also let them suffer the consequences. And then, the Lord pressured them to return to Him.

Israel made a 40-year detour before arriving back where they started. King Solomon found life meaningless apart from God and was attacked by enemies. And, Jonah landed in the fish's belly before repenting and obeying the Lord.

A life that brings honor and glory to God is a surrendered life. It is one which operates in the center of His will. Won't you spend your remaining days discovering and walking in God's will for you? You will never regret it.

THE PURPOSE OF CHRIST's COMING

If believers are living under grace, why is the Old Testament - the Law in particular - still part of our Bible? The reason is that the life and death of Jesus Christ fulfilled God's Law.

First, Jesus was personally obedient. The Pharisees accused Christ of disobeying some of their man - made additions to the legal code. But He flawlessly followed Mosaic Law as given by God. This is an important distinction since Jesus cannot be called a holy and blameless sacrifice unless He was totally submissive to the Father.

Second, Jesus died on the cross as a sacrifice. The Law clearly stated that death is the penalty for sin. (Genesis 2:17) But One who was perfect in keeping the Law could receive the punishment in place of one who sinned. That is exactly what Jesus Christ did for every believer. And through His death, He fulfilled God's lawful requirement.

Third, Christ amplified God's moral law. Through His example and teachings, Jesus explained that the moral law was more than just a set of rules to follow. The Father's commands are guiding principles for a successful life.

For example, the Israelites avoided adulterous acts in order to keep the seventh commandment. But in Matthew 5: 28, the Lord said that someone who lusts after another person has already committed adultery in the heart. The life principle here is purity.

Old Testament reading is essential for all believers today. We cannot truly understand the story of Jesus Christ until we become familiar with the Law He came to fulfill.

The Greatest Gift Of All
During the Christmas season, we think about the greatest gift of all, a gift given not only on the first Christmas, but as Billy Graham reminds us, a gift given in full on the first Easter:

GOD's WILL FOR US

Before Creation, God ordained Jesus' coming to earth, His death on the cross, and our redemption. He also planned work for each of us to do, which is for our good and His glory. (Ephesians 2:10) To accomplish His plans, God equips us with different spiritual gifts. He also provides the Holy Spirit to help us understand and follow His moral and personal will for us.

First, let's examine His moral will, which applies to all of us. Through the Scriptures, He gives us clear requirements for living a God - honoring life. These include proper sexual behavior (1 Thessalonians 4:3), a thankful attitude (1 Thessalonians 5:18), a forgiving mindset (Ephesians 4:32), a servant's heart (Galatians 5:13), and involvement in a local church. (Hebrews 10:25) We need to pay attention to the commands and warnings of Scripture in order to know and obey the Lord's moral will.

Second, God has designed a personal will for every one of us that begins at birth. Our personality, abilities, vocation, marital status, and even lifespan are built into His plan. He sees each individual as having great value and willingly invests Himself in His children's lives through the indwelling Holy Spirit. He calls us to fulfill His personal will and commits Himself to working for our very best.

God's plan isn't derailed by difficult circumstances or even by our sinful behavior. He is sovereign and weaves all factors together to accomplish what He has ordained. (Romans 8:28) God wants to direct our path each step of the way. (Proverbs 3:5 - 6) Are you seeking His guidance on a daily basis?

Galatians chapter four, verse four tells us, "But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son." With those simple words, the apostle Paul sums up much of the Old Testament. The fullness of time refers to all of God's preparations for sending Jesus Christ into the world to die for our sins. The Father's hand was organizing world events to bring about the most powerful incident ever. The story of Christ's coming is the story of human history.

Pleased by Noah's faithfulness, God saved his family from the worldwide flood. That preserved the Messianic line through Shem. (Genesis 7:13; Luke 3:23-38) Later, after the Israelites made it to the Promised Land, they ended up losing it. Eventually the Persian king Cyrus defeated their Babylonian captors and allowed the Jewish people to rebuild Jerusalem.

With Alexander the Great's conquest of the known world, the Greek language spread, giving people a common tongue. More time passed, and the Roman conquests ushered in a new era of peace. Traveling became easier as good roads were built, and the seas were safe to sail.

Then, when the time was right, Jesus Christ was born. He would be crucified and resurrected in the rebuilt city. His Gospel could be shared in a common language and carried to faraway countries.

Now, many centuries later, you are able to learn about a heavenly Father who loves you so much that He sent His precious Son to redeem you from your sins. God guided human history so you could be saved!

FAITH DURING STORMS OF LIFE

Who hasn't questioned God in the middle of one of life's storms? The disciples did. "The disciples woke [Jesus] up, shouting, 'Teacher, don't you care that we're going to drown?'" (Mark 4:38) We've all asked that at one time or another. "God, don't You care?"  We know that He does, but sometimes it seems as though He's distant as we're battered by raging storms.

{Story} One summer night during a severe thunderstorm a mother was tucking her small son into bed. She was about to turn the light off when he asked in a trembling voice, "Mommy, will you stay with me all night?" Smiling, the mother gave him a warm, reassuring hug and said tenderly, "I can't dear. I have to sleep in Daddy's room." A long silence followed. At last it was broken by a shaky voice saying, "The big sissy!" - Source unknown

We know that God loves us more deeply than we can ever know. It's not a question of whether we will be confronted with storms or not, but rather how we must face adversity: As people with hope and faith in an all - powerful God. Jesus never promised that we'd have an easy life, but He did promise that he would be with us "always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

King David prayed this way in thanks to God in spite of all of his troubles:

The Lord is my light and my salvation

so why should I be afraid?

The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger,

so why should I tremble?

The one thing I ask of the Lord

the thing I seek most is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,

delighting in the Lord's perfections and meditating in his Temple.

For he will conceal me there when troubles come;

He will hide me in his sanctuary.

He will place me out of reach on a high rock. (Psalm 27:1,4,5)

If we believe that God is the one "who is, who always was, and who is still to come - the Almighty One."  (Revelation 1:8) ultimately what do we have to fear? We may not be all - knowing like God is, but because of Jesus' death on the cross for our salvation, we can be assured that no matter what storms we temporarily face, that our place with God in eternity is assured.

MEDITATING ON THE CHRIST CHILD

Merry Christmas! Today is most likely a busy day for you. There are meals to cook, guests to welcome, places to go, people to see, gifts to unwrap, and possibly, even a few gifts to be wrapped! This holy day can certainly be hectic for all of us.

Maybe your Christmas is just getting started. Or perhaps, the holiday is drawing to a close. Whatever the case, this is a moment of meditation in the midst of one of the busiest days of the year. So, In Touch wants to give you one word of counsel: slow down. For the next few moments, let the responsibilities and concerns of today slide off your shoulders. Allow the demands of family and friends to disappear. Focus your thoughts on that baby in the manger. Slow down, and think about... Jesus.

One of the most powerful, yet overlooked, verses in the Christmas story may be Luke 2:19. Just picture it: the newborn Christ crying in the night, a new father frantically trying to provide a comfortable shelter in the unusual setting, animals rustling around, strangers interrupting an intimate moment.

Without a doubt, the first Christmas was hectic, too. And yet, there was Mary, calmly taking it all in. She knew every aspect of this night was important. Yet, her total focus was on the child in her arms. She did not simply notice what was happening; she "treasured all these things and pondering them in her heart."  She breathed in the full experience and held it in her spirit. As you celebrate today, take the time to truly experience the wonder of Christmas, and ponder it in your heart as well.

RELYING ON SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD

The rich, young man approached Jesus to learn how to secure his future in eternity. Out of loving concern, the Lord revealed the man's wrong thinking and identified a significant spiritual problem.

First, the wealthy man incorrectly believed that good deeds were the means of entering Heaven. But eternal life is not "bought."  It's a free gift through faith in Jesus Christ. We must also understand it's not something we can achieve apart from God. Eternal life becomes ours at salvation. At that moment, the life of God comes to us in the person of His indwelling Holy Spirit. (John 4:14)

Secondly, the man's identity was tied up in material things. Jesus addressed his spiritual problem by issuing a loving challenge. The Lord told him to sell all his possessions, give to the poor, and follow Him. Jesus was not saying that giving every - thing away was the way to salvation. He wanted this young man to realize his difficulty - his possessions owned him. Jesus offered treasure in Heaven. But the man turned away. His action revealed what Jesus already knew. He was too attached to his belongings to accept the offer of true riches.

Jesus then explained that those who have wealth and position tend to trust in themselves, not in God. In our Western culture, we have so much more than most people in the world. Yet, we can fall into this same trap. We believe in Jesus for salvation but trust in ourselves for daily living. We depend on our intelligence, talents, material possessions, or family to help us. God wants us to rely on Him alone. On whom or what do you depend?

CAN ETERNAL LIFE BE EARNED?

Sometimes teenagers decide to do something and then ask for input. At that point, if they get an answer they don't want to hear, they often react negatively. Believers can act the same way toward God.

In Mark 10:17, a wealthy man came to Jesus and asked, "What shall I do to inherit eternal life?"  He spent his days keeping the commandments. But the rich man wanted to know what else he needed to do to secure his position in Heaven. The man incorrectly believed that eternal life can be earned.

Satan, the great deceiver, promotes the false idea that man can make himself acceptable in God's eyes. Many of us have fallen victim to Satan's lies. We approach God on the basis of our conduct or performance. Just like the wealthy man, we may have thought, God will accept me because I am doing the right things. Or perhaps we have assumed, The good deeds I do outweigh the wrong things in my life. In thinking this way, we have established our own standard of acceptability and ignored God's.

We all have a flesh nature bent away from our heavenly Father. Nothing we do will pay for our sin - debt. Only faith in Jesus, who died in our place, makes us acceptable to God. Through Him, we are forgiven of our sins and receive everlasting life. Apart from Christ, we face eternal punishment. The rich man chose to walk away from Jesus. How do you respond when the truth of Scripture conflicts with what you believe? Do you embrace God's standard or turn away to follow your own desires?

EVANGELISM? ME?

Topic: Matthew 28:16 - 20

Evangelism. Does the word make you uncomfortable? It makes a lot of people uncomfortable. Sharing our the good news of the gospel is sometimes a thankless job. Yet Jesus calls us to "go and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19). Don't we have an obligation to share the message of God's grace and love with others? Paul says "woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!" (1 Corinthians 9:16, KJV) It would be rather selfish to keep such amazing truth to ourselves!

Why then is evangelism so uncomfortable? One reason is that we're worried that we'll fail. We know that often people don't accept the gospel. Sometimes people refuse to believe even what's right in front of their face. Read the passage from Matthew again about when Jesus appeared on the mountain to the disciples: "When they saw him [Jesus], they worshiped him - but some of them doubted!" (Matthew 28:17) Did you catch that? Some of the disciples even doubted! When Jesus spoke to Nicodemus, a prominent Pharisee, Jesus lamented that we Christians "speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony" (John 3:11). We shouldn't feel that we've failed when people do not accept the gospel, for it is only through God's grace, not our own efforts, that someone may be saved. By sharing our faith and giving someone to think about, we may have helped alter their life course to bring them one step closer to knowing the living God.

A second reason is that we may have negative images of what evangelism is like. Street evangelism (such as handing out tracts or shouting "Repent sinners!") is surely not the only way to share our faith. The internet, for example, gives us an incredible new method to reach people all over the world. Over one billion people worldwide now have access to the Internet, and this is an amazing opportunity to share the gospel all over the world regardless of whether you are shy or outgoing. Your talents and God - given gifts can be used for ministry online. See below for some resources on how you can start leading others to God today, online! Let's use the internet for God's glory!

THOSE WHO HURT

When we're in pain, we may question whether God cares or even knows what we're going through. Our difficult circumstances can give us a wrong view of Him. Scripture teaches that our three - in - one God is omniscient. In other words, He knows all things. No actions or persons are hidden from His sight. The past, present, and future are all laid out before Him. (Psalm 33:13 - 15; Hebrews 4:13)

1 Chronicles 28:9 tells us, "the Lord searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts."  Because of this, He knows us intimately. And with His perfect knowledge, He understands what we really need. (Matthew 10:29 - 30) God's love and concern for us do not change, even if our pain has resulted from our own sinful actions.

Jesus repeatedly demonstrated God's loving concern for people. He met with Nicodemus, one of Israel's religious leaders. And without condemnation or accusation, Jesus showed him the way to God. (John 3:3) He also visited Zaccheus, a man whose financial dishonesty had hurt many. Jesus even initiated conversation with the Samaritan woman, a social outcast. He also delayed His journey in response to the cry of a blind beggar. He showed compassion to Bartimaeus and affirmed his faith.

Through what we saw Jesus do in his life, we can be sure our heavenly Father cares about us. God's love extends over us like a canopy. He wants us to come to Him with our questions and pain. Don't allow trials to cloud your thinking about God's deep concern for you. Accept Jesus' invitation and bring your burdens to Him. (Matthew 11:28)

ON THE BOTTOM LOOKING UP

Many times when we are seemingly at the bottom it is because we have not confessed and truly repented, or turned away, from sin.

This was the case with David. Weary of running from the murderous Saul for eight long years, David finally wilted and moved to the land of the Philistines, partnering with King Achish. Only the providence and grace of God prevented David and his band of 600 men from warring against their own country.

David had a faith failure. He stopped believing that God would protect him from Saul, and fear caused him to side with Israel's staunchest rivals. Compromise usually follows a faith failure. David stepped outside of God's will, compromised his loyalty to God and God's people, and then forgot God.

It wasn't until David reached the very bottom rung, until he was facing the loss of his family and death by mutiny, that he returned to the Lord. He repented, recalled how God had blessed him in the past, refocused his attention to God's power, remembered God's promises, and resolved to trust God. He simply made up his mind that he would follow and obey the Lord whatever the cost.

Immediately, David's life was back on track. When you're at the bottom and there's nowhere to look but up, take heart. That is the only direction you should be looking anyway.

THE RIGHT TO ENTER PARADISE

Death is inevitable. The thief on the cross knew when his would occur, but we can not predict our own. After his death, the crucified criminal went to live in paradise with Jesus. Some of us will also live eternally in God's presence. But others will experience everlasting torment, forever separated from Him.

If we receive Jesus as our Savior, our penalty for sin is paid. We are adopted into God's family, and Heaven is our eternal home. If we reject Jesus, we remain alienated from the Lord and under condemnation for our sin. We are destined to experience eternal judgment. God won't accept any of man's excuses because there is no acceptable defense for unbelief. (Acts 4:12)

Become part of God's family today. Acknowledge your sinfulness, and express your faith in these words:

"God, I have sinned against You. (Romans 3:23) I've followed my own way and refused to give You the right to rule in my life. (Romans 3:10 - 12) I recognize I am separated from You and cannot rescue myself. I do believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son. I accept the truth of the Scriptures... that His death on the cross paid my sin - debt in full. (1 Corinthians 15:3 - 4) And I ask You to forgive me of my sins. (1 John 1:9) By faith, I receive You, Lord Jesus, as my personal Savior from this moment on."

If you just spoke those words to God, then, like the thief on the cross, you have received salvation... a gift of God's grace. The heavenly Father welcomes every person who comes to Him through His Son, regardless of background, age, or current situation. Through Jesus, the right to enter paradise is yours!

FACING DEATH

The thief on the cross - condemned by both God and man - was just hours away from death. But before he took his last breath, something glorious occurred. The criminal, in the very process of dying, was rescued by Jesus right in front of the mocking crowd. The thief's name was written in the Lamb's Book of Life, and all of heaven rejoiced. Jesus promised him a place in paradise in the presence of God.

On those three crosses at Calvary, one robber died in his sin. Another man, the Son of Man, died to pay the penalty for sin. And the third, also a thief, was redeemed from sin. His sin - debt was paid in full, and he became part of God's family.

But what evidence do we have that his deathbed conversion was real? First, there's his change in behavior. Initially, both thieves hurled insults and blasphemies against Jesus. In a total turnaround, the redeemed robber later chastised the first man for his words. (v. 40)

Second, the thief's admission of guilt is evidence of his conversion. He publicly acknowledged being justly punished for his wicked deeds. (v. 41)

The third piece of evidence is the robber's expression of faith in the Lord. The man called Jesus by name, acknowledged He was a king with a kingdom, believed there was life after death, and asked Jesus to rescue him.

The final evidence of his deathbed conversion is Jesus' promise to the thief. The Lord told him in Luke 23:43, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise."

Every one of us is just a heartbeat away from dying. It's a sobering thought that should lead you to examine your life. Are you part of God's family? Are you living to please Him?

THE GLORY OF CHRIST IN TOUGH TIMES

Point a telescope at any star in the night sky. It's amazing how the instrument will magnify the star for you, even though that distant ball of gas is actually millions of times larger than the image your eye sees. Believers are like a telescope for Christ. He is far more radiant than we could ever convey, but the purpose of our life is to magnify Him.

While in Roman custody, Paul said, "Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death" (Philippians 1:20). In other words, Paul told the Philippians that as long as he served God, even though he could no longer preach or disciple, Christ was being glorified. In this way, Paul fulfilled the God's purpose.

He accepted his imprisonment with grace, and, even in chains, he searched for ways the Lord could use him. He rejoiced that his situation resulted in new ministry to the elite praetorian guard and, even more, that he had the privilege to suffer for Christ's name. (Philippians 3:10) When a believer passes through trials peacefully and praises the Lord, unbelievers notice. The Christian is a telescope, bringing Jesus into focus in a way that the rest of the world can see and understand.

Whatever is happening in your life, good or bad, long - term or short, you have the opportunity to exalt Christ. Let those in your sphere of influence see how He victoriously guides you through tough times. The Lord will work through you if you submit, and, in the process, He will give you the strength and courage to live above your circumstances.

THE KEY TO SUCCESSFUL LIVING

The devotions for the last two days challenged us to live above our circumstances and focus upon God and His sovereignty. But how do we accomplish this in practical terms? In reality, we are often too weak to properly adjust our mindset to Christ and see the potential for good in painful times. Thankfully, believers are not without help.

In order to focus on God and successfully live above our circumstances, we must understand our unity with Christ through the Holy Spirit. Life is not segregated into neat packages of work, family, church, etc., with no crossover or blurring of the lines between areas. Christ should permeate our entire existence. Paul was in such oneness with the Lord that to live in his earthly body meant to have Christ with him every moment, no matter the situation. No area of the apostle's life could be defined apart from his faith; his mind, heart, and will were completely saturated with Christ.

When Paul wrote, "To live is Christ," he was referring to Jesus living and working through us in the Holy Spirit's power. (Philippians 1:21) That doesn't mean we think of divinity every second of the day, but we do make God's will our first consideration when formulating plans or interacting with others.

Trying circumstances are a reality for everyone, Christian or not. The difference for believers occurs when we recognize our oneness with Christ, when we act by His strength and live according to His precepts. That's when focusing on Him becomes second nature.

CHANGING OUR FOCUS

Nothing can touch a believer's life unless it comes through the permissive will of God. That means He has complete control, even when it feels like Satan is running rampant through our personal lives. Trapped in Roman confinement, Paul knew that God could rescue him; after all, He had removed Peter's chains. (Acts 12:7) But Paul was not simply waiting around for liberation. Even in his chains, he earnestly continued with his kingdom work because he believed God did everything for a reason.

It is true that the Lord has a purpose for whatever He brings into a person's life. Though we may desperately wish for different circumstances, God allows us to go through a given situation when it will ultimately bring about the most favorable result. If we allow Him to finish the work instead of trying to extricate ourselves, we'll see a positive outcome.

Paul's time in prison proved a benefit for the Gospel, though logically, the spread of the Word should have been severely hindered by the confinement of such a great preacher. In two years, he had been guarded by many of the elite praetorians (Philippians 1:13), and we know what Paul talked to them about Christ during their shifts.

There isn't a single verse in the Bible that says believers are promised an easy life. In fact, the Word warns that the opposite is true. (John 16:33) But we, like Paul, can choose to live above our circumstances by realizing that God has a plan to use our experiences for our good and the benefit others.

LIVING ABOVE YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES

Paul wrote his letter to the Philippians during a long and unjust imprisonment. But, even though Paul is in the midst of suffering, this short epistle is full of rejoicing. Paul never complains or casts blame for his situation because he learned to live above his circumstances.

How do most people respond to difficulty? First, they try blaming others for the problem in order to make themselves feel better. But blaming only results in broken relationships. Second, they may complain, which brings pity from others but only enhances the problem in their own minds. Finally, they search for a way out of the situation and, in the process, usually make things worse.

Paul knew that in order to live above his circumstances, rather than merely muddling through them, he needed to shift his focus. Instead of examining his problem and complaining, he looked to God. He praised God, proclaiming, "I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord" (Philippians 3:8).

God wants to hear our honest concerns, anger, and confusion about our trials, but He also wants us to trust Him. Focusing on the Lord and praising Him doesn't mean that we insincerely pretend to enjoy tough times. Instead, we can honestly acknowledge that He is in control of the situation and will guide our every step just as He promised. (Proverbs 3:5 - 6)

Believers have a simple choice. We can wallow in self - pity, or we can look to Jesus Christ and learn to live above our circumstances.

PRAISING THE LAMB OF GOD

Topic: Psalm 34:1 - 3
We must meet three requirements to worship God properly, and there are four ways to express our praise properly.

The first requirement is we must know God. The only way we can get to know God is through His revelation of Himself, which is His Word, the Bible. As we absorb His truths, we learn from and of the Lord. Then our worship can be motivated and directed correctly.

Next, we must be submissive to Him. There is no true praise without obedience. Finally, we must have a pure heart. Since we are human, we are weak and frail. We will make mistakes. But God wants people who understand their weaknesses and are willing to submit to His will and acknowledge they are nothing apart from Him.

The four ways we can properly express our praise is through:

Speaking: We can praise and bless the Lord by telling others about Him or by reading Scripture such as today's verse.

Singing: Some of the most powerful passages of praise are put to music, and we indeed will sing praises to God for eternity in heaven.

Service: It is a contradiction for a believer to say he knows or loves God without offering Him service in some fashion. True faith bears fruit.

Sharing: Another contradiction surfaces when a believer refuses to talk about Jesus with others or to tithe - to give back to God.
