A SOLID FOUNDATION
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: 1 John 2:3 - 9

"All who listen to My instructions and follow them are wise, like a man who builds his house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents, and the floods rise and the storm winds beat against his house, it won't collapse, for it is built on rock. But those who hear My instructions and ignore them are foolish, like a man who builds his house on sand. For when the rains and floods come, and storm winds beat against his house, it will fall with a mighty crash"  (Matthew 7:24 - 27).

What a wonderful promise for supernatural living to know that no matter what happens - the greatest tragedies, adversities or losses - your house will stand. You will not only survive, but mature, grow and become more like Jesus.

As you listen to and follow His instructions, you will observe that He has been speaking to the multitudes in what is frequently referred to as the Sermon on the Mount. Review chapters 5, 6 and 7 of Matthew. List all the things that He commands us to do, and then by faith claim those instructions in your life. For there is nothing that God ever commands that He will not enable us to do if we seek His help.

Remember, too, His promise recorded in Matthew 22:37 - 40, that all of the commandments in the sermon on the Mount are fulfilled when we love God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength, and when we love our neighbor as ourselves. So the instructions that He is giving are not difficult, for He who gives the command will enable us to build on a sure foundation of solid rock.

Note, however, the admonishment for those who ignore His instructions! For those foolish people who build their houses on sand, collapse of those houses is the certain consequence. One need only look around to see evidence of the fulfillment of God's warning in the lives of numerous loved ones, neighbors and friends. God loves us, and He wants to bless us, but He cannot if we ignore Him.

Are you following the instructions of the Lord Jesus Christ? If not, I encourage you to begin today, with the assurance that He will bless you, your family and all who are dear to you.

THE REWARDS OF MEDITATION
Mood:  lyrical
Topic: Ephesians 1:16-19a

Recently we have spent a good bit of time studying meditation. Now, you may be thinking, So what? How will meditating have a positive effect on my life? Consistent meditation has a number of benefits for the believer. Greater intimacy with the Lord is a key advantage of renewed devotion to seeking His will. But on the eve of a brand - new year, we want to emphasize one particular benefit: a changed perspective.

When we focus on knowing God - on spending time with Him and getting to know the way He thinks - something happens in our hearts and minds. Over time, we discover that our point of view begins to shift. We think about ourselves less and less. Instead, we place greater priority on God's goodness and the concerns of others. Our prayers tend to become God - focused rather than self - focused. And, they reveal a much more intimate relationship with our heavenly Father.

As the new year begins, our prayer is that you will seek to develop spiritual eyes. As the apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians chapter one, we pray "the eyes of your heart may be enlightened" so you will perceive more clearly the riches found only in Christ. But how do you get these "enlightened eyes"? They develop as a natural result of your time with the Lord - through your solitude, silence, and surrender.

Do you need to recommit to know God better? Meditate regularly on His Word, and claim 2007 as your year of greatest spiritual growth yet.

MORE ESSENTIALS OF MEDITATION
Mood:  chatty
Topic: Psalm 19:14

Previously we explored three essentials of effective meditation. Today, let's round out the list by adding three more. Here are essentials four through six:

Silence is a key to meditation that many of us struggle with. How often do you sit down to pray and then do all the talking yourself? In Isaiah 30:15, the prophet reminds us that "in quietness and trust is your strength." However, we're not often quiet in prayer, are we? Sometimes we go on and on with our petitions and never actually give the Lord an opportunity to respond. How can we ever truly know His heart unless we stop and listen to Him in silence?

The fifth essential to meditating is self - control. This simply means admitting that you need to deal with some things in your life. God is continually refining us and shaping us into the men and women He wants us to be. As we surrender more and more to His will, we will have to bring these areas of our lives under His control.

The sixth, and final, essential is submission. Believers must submit to God. All of the prayer and meditation in the world will not make a difference in your life if you have a rebellious spirit. He desires to know you, use you, and mold you according to His best plan for you. This cannot happen if you do not intentionally submit to His work in your life.

Meditation can be hard work. But as with exercise, the rewards are well worth the effort. Ask the Holy Spirit's help, and make a commitment to start meditating today.

BARRIERS TO KNOWING GOD's WILL
Mood:  hug me
Topic: Psalm 119:9 -16
God is always pleased to reveal His will to us. But at times, we cannot receive the message. Something in our life is creating a barrier to hearing Him.

Obstacles to the believer include: Self - will. Sometimes, we decide what we're going to do without God's input. We still talk to Him about our plan, even thinking it is so logical that the Lord must agree. But we have stopped listening for His will.

A second obstacle to Christians is: Influence. It's wise to seek godly counsel. But believers must be careful whom they allow to influence them. Many people will say what someone else wants to hear rather than what is actually needed.

A third barrier is: Sin. There are two ways it hinders our ability to know God's will. First, our spirit is clouded so we cannot determine His mind. Second, the Father may not reveal the next step in His plan because He's waiting for us to repent and become willing to obey.

A fourth obstacle for believers is: Distraction. One of the most subtle obstructions to knowing God's will is busyness. Our hands and our minds are so full we don't have the patience to wait and listen. The Lord does not chase after us, trying to force us to hear Him. Psalm 46:10 - "Be still, and know that I am God"  - is His simple solution for clearing the clutter of overbooked lives.

The next time you seem unable to determine the Lord's will, try slowing down so that you can focus on Him. Then, consider whether you might have allowed one of these barriers to be constructed between you and God. Ask, and He will gladly help you to dismantle it.

ESSENTIALS OF EFFECTIVE MEDITATION
Mood:  hug me
Topic: Psalm 46:10
You may wonder, How can I incorporate genuine meditation into my Christian life? There are several essentials of meditating that will reap tremendous benefits in your walk of faith. Here are three of them.

The first is a season of time. Do you hurry through your prayer time so you can get to other things? Think about the model Jesus gave us. Did He ever rush through His time with the Father? No, Jesus made it His priority, and everything else fell into place around that.

A second essential to meditating on God is stillness. We find the call to stillness in Psalm 46:10. But still, we may wonder, What does it mean to "be still"? Simply put, stillness means we stop everything else. This can be difficult in the fast-paced, multi-tasking world we live in. We've gotten used to doing a dozen things at once! However, true meditation requires that we focus our minds on only one thing: almighty God.

A third essential to meditation is seclusion. This is something the Lord really had to fight for in His ministry. He was constantly surrounded by people. While always attending to their needs, He also guarded His need for seclusion.

Often in the Gospels, we read about Jesus retreating for some private, intimate time with the Father. No matter what else was going on, Jesus always made a point to safeguard chunks of time here and there to rest in the Spirit, focus on His relationship with the Father, and build up His strength.

Is your prayer life characterized by seclusion, stillness, and time set apart and safeguarded? Commit today to build these essentials into your time with God.

MEDITATION IN RELATIONSHIP
Mood:  hungry
Topic: 2 Samuel 7:8 - 22
Many people ask, "What can I do to really grow in my Christian life?" They are usually looking for a secret path to maturity - something to do, some specific type of service, gift, or talent. And yet, the true key to growing in your relationship with Christ isn't found in any of these things. In fact, the most important thing you can do to mature in your faith is simply to focus on your relationship with our heavenly Father.

We need to realize that genuine maturity and effectiveness are tied to our relationship with the Lord. When we take our focus off of what we can do for Him, our entire thought process will start to shift. This truth puts all believers on the same level, from the high - profile preacher to the quietest, most humble member of the church. Talents, gifts, and personalities do not matter anywhere near as much as the commitment to simply know God.

1 Samuel 13:14 tells us King David was "a man after [God's] own heart." And yet, in 2 Samuel 7:18, David himself asked, "Who am I... that You have brought me this far?" Why was God so gracious to him? What was it about him that God valued so highly? It was that David knew God. He spent time with the Lord. He poured his heart out to his heavenly Father. In psalm after psalm, we see him laying everything out before the Lord and seeking His perfect will. David's strength was in his relationship with God.

Do you want to grow in the Lord? Perhaps you need to stop asking, "What can I do?" Or, "How can I serve?" Instead, say, "Here I am, Father. Let's talk."

MEDITATION: THE KEY TO LISTENING
Mood:  rushed
Topic: Psalm 63:1 - 8
Meditation is a word that has been thrown around quite a bit over the years. To some, it's a time of introspection and self - empowerment. To others, it's seen as a mystical practice in which certain people focus on some false god or belief system. For Christians, however, meditation means something else.

Despite the different ways the term is used, meditation is something we must take seriously in our walk of faith. Simply put, it's the practice of thinking about the Lord in all of His fullness. It involves asking questions such as: Who is God? How does He work in my life? What does Scripture say about Him? How has He shown His faithfulness to me personally? How has He made Himself known?

In times of meditation, God's Holy Spirit directs our thinking as we earnestly seek to know Him better. It's a time of holy thinking that's completely dedicated to the Lord. Often, this means arguing with yourself; wrestling with spiritual principles as your heavenly Father builds a firm foundation in your life. It may even be a time of humiliation as the Lord does what is necessary to humble you in His presence. Doing so will bring you into a true Christ - centered frame of mind.

Meditation is serious business, and believers should never imagine it as a time of thoughtless relaxation. Absolute concentration is required, as the Lord directs your thoughts according to His will. Set aside an hour this week to focus your mind totally on God. He is certainly worthy of your undivided attention.

WHY GOD EMPHASIZES CHRIST's RETURN
Mood:  lazy
Topic: Colossians 3:1 - 4
The idea of eternity is a hard one to grasp. It's difficult to wrap the human mind around the concept. But God still wants His children to have an eternal perspective. Throughout Scripture, He stresses Christ's second coming to help us think about our life in timeless terms. Realizing that Jesus could return at any time forces the Church keep the proper focus.

In Colossians 3:2, Paul reminds us to set our minds on heavenly things rather than on the things of earth. We walk through the material world. But we're to make decisions about where we spend our time, money, and energy by considering their long - term impact. The most important decision we make is to obey God's call to evangelize.

According to Matthew 28:19, every believer has a personal responsibility to share the Gospel. The goal of each individual - and the Church as a whole - must be to help as many people as possible enter Heaven. But in order for that to happen, all future Christians must hear the Good News before Jesus returns.

God emphasizes the return of Jesus Christ so believers will live with an eternal mindset. The Second Coming can happen at any time. And when Christ comes back, He will usher in a new age for those who choose to be with Him forever. In preparation for that day, we must live now with our feet on the ground, our hands busy for God, and our spiritual eyes watching for the Savior's arrival.

THE LORD WILL REVEAL HIS WILL
Mood:  energetic
Topic: Ephesians 5:15 - 17
It's sad when believers claim the Lord's will is a mystery. In reality, the opposite is true. God is committed to making clear His plan for your life.

The primary source for God's revelation is His Word. Divine principles for a successful life are found in the Bible. So the more we make a habit of reading of it, the better equipped we are to honor God in our daily decisions.

Reading Scripture is part of sharing a good relationship with our heavenly Father. Too often, we want to flip open the book, find the answer for a problem we're facing, and move on. We pray with the same kind of self-centered urgency. Then, when God is silent, we wonder why.

Living in the Lord's will is about more than getting directions for a major decision. We always need to be asking, "God, what are You teaching me today, and what would You have me do with that knowledge?" The answer to those questions comes through meditation, an essential practice for the believer. We need to dwell on scripture and ask the Holy Spirit how it can be applied in our life.

By routinely living and making decisions according to God's principles, we walk in His will. Sometimes, we treat God like the clerk at an information desk. We want fast, easy answers to our big questions. And then, we'd like to be on our way. But that's not how the Lord works. If we want to be able to determine His will, we must be in the habit of seeking it.

THE UNASSAILABLE CONFIDENCE OF DAVID
Mood:  a-ok

"Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has taunted the armies of the living God." And David said, "The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine" ( 1 Samuel 17:36,37).

David's going to kill the Philistine. There's no doubt in his mind, but his confidence comes from a strange source in the light of our modern times. Athletes of today, heroes to millions, go at it a bit differently, don't they?

Imagine David the golfer...

"It's about the training, you know, and I've trained against lions and bears for years. I'm ready both mentally and physically to take it to the next level, and I've got good equipment backing me. My coach has really had me working on my swing, and I'm at the point now where I'm confident that the rock will go where I'm aiming it."

Imagine David the team player, standing in front of a microphone and speaking to the press just before the big game. Maybe he's wearing a hat with the sling manufacturer's logo on it. He's got that nervous but direct look that athletes always have just before or after the big win.

"Well, they're a great bunch of guys and we've been training hard for this day. It's not just about me, it's about the whole army behind me, and it's been a wonderful experience just being on this team. I think we can take it all the way."

"David," one reporter asks, "what's your strategy today? How do you plan to win against such a powerful enemy?"

"Well, Chuck, you have to remember that it's not just about me. It's about teamwork, and it's about equipment, and it's about heart. I've got the Israelites behind me, and this new carbon fiber sling has really been working out for me against the lions and the bears. I'm just going to go in there today and I'm going to try my best, me and all my guys. It's all you can really do, you know?"

"One more question..."

"Sorry fellas, I'm out of time. I have to head out there and get into the game. Thanks for all your support. I just want to thank my fans and I hope I can make them proud today."

We have a funny way of showing humility these days. We've become great at playing the humble card while still acknowledging that yes, we are fantastic. Personally, I'd be like the golfer. All smiles and false modesty, trying hard not to jinx myself by declaring myself a winner before the match even starts.

Now imagine David the professional wrestler.

"I'm coming to get you, Goliath! Lions and bears are just the appetizer, and you're the main course! My sling is ready and you're going down, you hear me? Down! That title is mine! You think you're all that, you think you can come in here and tell my brothers what's up? Well, I'll tell you what's up! The bigger they are, the harder they fall, and you're going to fall so hard you'll knock the dust off the Great Pyramid!"

Not even close, right? Or is he?

Like the professional wrestler, David knows he's going to win because he has the script. God wants the Philistine dead, so dead the Philistine will be. He and the wrestler are both vessels for the will of the man upstairs; David's man upstairs just happens to be God Almighty, while the wrestler's man upstairs is the almighty ratings machine.

Unlike the wrestler, though, David freely acknowledges where his talents come from and he acknowledges that the Lord has been there for every single victory. This next fight will be no different; victory is assured.

If it was a simple matter of talent with a sling, David would be the golfer, relying on the quality of his equipment and the depth of his training. If the men of the army behind him weren't quaking in their armor, he'd be the team player, rallying his men and warming them up for the big fight. Neither is an assured victory.

The only assured victory is a rigged match, and this match was essentially rigged from the start. David's talent with the sling was given to him by God, and it was honed through the years leading up to this fight. At the right moment, God handed David the script and told him that this was how things were going to go down. David was to win the title in God's name, as well as winning the hearts of God's people. After all, he already had the heart of God; the rest was inevitable.

~Dear Father,

What is my Goliath? I've never lived in Your love so confidently that I would take on anything with no regard for the possibility of failure. If I see my Goliath tomorrow, will I be ready to defeat him? Is my Goliath in my life right now? Father, I just want to walk with You, to do right by You. Let's not overemphasize Goliath; David is the real story here, and I want so much to have his confidence in You.

JESUS' OFFERING OF PEACE
Mood:  hug me
Topic: Romans 5:1 - 9
If you're brave enough, stand on a sidewalk and ask people walking by, "What gives you peace?" The answers you receive will most likely have one thing in common: the average person's definition of peace is dependent upon circumstances - a solid relationship with a spouse, a well - paying job, or good health. So, what happens if a couple fights, the company lays off employees, or sickness strikes the body?

Peace that's rooted in good situations isn't really peace at all. It's a brittle kind of harmony between man and the world, and it crumbles very easily. Jesus Christ offers true peace - a lasting contentment that is unbreakable, no matter what happens.

However, a sinful life makes peace impossible. A person cannot experience the promise of God's care when he or she is acting in defiance of His will. So when a believer expresses faith in Jesus, the war for self - rule ends.

Submission to the Lord allows His peace to fill your life. When the Holy Spirit lives within us, we can approach everything in life with confidence and serenity. The only way to get this lasting peace is through a relationship with Jesus Christ.

In Romans 5:1, Paul explains that to be justified - that is, declared no longer guilty -  we must accept the sacrifice Christ made in our place. Justification makes us right with God and opens our hearts to peace.

Have you told God you recognize His Son's loving sacrifice was made on your behalf? If not, then you do not have real peace. Now is the right time to surrender to Him.

WHY OUR NEEDS REMAIN UNMET
Mood:  amorous
Topic: 1 Peter 1:13 - 15
Teenagers often search for identity through role models such as actors and sports figures. However, many times these are the very people whose lives are coming apart at the seams. Adults do the same thing, only they are more likely to seek self - gratification through financial gain and social position.

As Christians, our only true source of identity is Jesus Christ. He is our example for successful living. Searching for this in another person or social position only leads to disappointment. Sadly, many who profess to know Jesus as their Savior refuse to acknowledge Him as Lord over every area of their lives. Attitudes such as pride, selfishness, greed, and materialism arise from hearts that are not fully committed to Christ. Jesus made it clear that in order for us to save our life, we must be willing to lose it unto Him. (Luke 9:24)

Peter reminds us that we are really aliens - strangers to this world because of our love and devotion to Jesus Christ. Therefore, we are not to seek gratification in temporal pleasures. We are chosen by God to know Him and to experience the wonder of His mercy and grace. Our Identity is secure because of who lives inside of us and not who we are.

Have you settled the identity issue? If not, ask God to reveal the areas in your life that lack true commitment to Him.

THE REASON FOR CHRIST's COMING
Mood:  amorous
Topic: John 17:5 - 8
Ask a churchgoer why Jesus came, and you will probably hear something based on Luke 19:10: "To seek and to save that which was lost." That's true. Jesus came like a shepherd to draw lost sheep into the fold. He renewed the relationship between God and believer. But Jesus says His time on earth was meant to do even more: He came to reveal the true nature of the Father to mankind.

We need to understand that revelation is progressive. Back in the Garden of Eden, knowledge of the Lord was like a little trickle. Later, Moses explained the Law so the Israelites would know what was expected of them. The trickle became a stream. When the prophets revealed more about God, the stream widened into a river. Then came Jesus, the very embodiment of His Father. It was as if a dam broke on the sea of knowledge. Now, people were able to drink in full understanding of the Father.

The New Testament is dedicated to teaching us about Jesus because He is our revelation of God. We do ourselves a terrible disservice when we neglect Bible reading. God's character is recorded for us so we can build a relationship with Him based on mutual love and commitment. Neither of those can grow without knowledge.

Modern saints are blessed with access to the Bible in its entirety. Using the knowledge we glean from its pages, we should honor our Lord. We do this in two ways. First, by growing in our faith. And second, by obeying His command to seek the lost. That way, we can share about Jesus, who is the only way to know the heavenly Father. (John 14:6)

LIVING IN THE CENTER OF GOD's WILL
Mood:  amorous
Topic: Romans 12:1-8
Our three-in-one God has the right to plan our lives because of who He is and what He has done. As Creator, He has fashioned us in the womb. (Psalm 139:13) As Sustainer, He causes our hearts to beat and our bodies to function.

Jesus is our Redeemer, who released us from bondage to sin. He purchased our freedom with His shed blood. He is the Savior who rescued us from an eternity of punishment. He is also our Counselor, from whom we receive wisdom and understanding. Jesus is also our Guide who directs us perfectly since He sees all. (Hebrews 4:13) As our Provider, He knows what is best for us in every situation and gives us just what we need. (James 1:17)

Yet throughout history, many have chosen to resist His will. For example, the unbelieving and fearful Israelites turned away from entering the Promised Land. (Numbers 14:1 - 4) King Solomon disregarded God's instructions about marriage. And, Jonah refused to witness to Nineveh. God allowed them to rebel, but He also let them suffer the consequences. And then, the Lord pressured them to return to Him.

Israel made a 40-year detour before arriving back where they started. King Solomon found life meaningless apart from God and was attacked by enemies. And, Jonah landed in the fish's belly before repenting and obeying the Lord.

A life that brings honor and glory to God is a surrendered life. It is one which operates in the center of His will. Won't you spend your remaining days discovering and walking in God's will for you? You will never regret it.

THE PURPOSE OF CHRIST's COMING
Mood:  amorous
Topic: Matthew 5:17 - 19
If believers are living under grace, why is the Old Testament - the Law in particular - still part of our Bible? The reason is that the life and death of Jesus Christ fulfilled God's Law.

First, Jesus was personally obedient. The Pharisees accused Christ of disobeying some of their man - made additions to the legal code. But He flawlessly followed Mosaic Law as given by God. This is an important distinction since Jesus cannot be called a holy and blameless sacrifice unless He was totally submissive to the Father.

Second, Jesus died on the cross as a sacrifice. The Law clearly stated that death is the penalty for sin. (Genesis 2:17) But One who was perfect in keeping the Law could receive the punishment in place of one who sinned. That is exactly what Jesus Christ did for every believer. And through His death, He fulfilled God's lawful requirement.

Third, Christ amplified God's moral law. Through His example and teachings, Jesus explained that the moral law was more than just a set of rules to follow. The Father's commands are guiding principles for a successful life.

For example, the Israelites avoided adulterous acts in order to keep the seventh commandment. But in Matthew 5: 28, the Lord said that someone who lusts after another person has already committed adultery in the heart. The life principle here is purity.

Old Testament reading is essential for all believers today. We cannot truly understand the story of Jesus Christ until we become familiar with the Law He came to fulfill.

The Greatest Gift Of All
During the Christmas season, we think about the greatest gift of all, a gift given not only on the first Christmas, but as Billy Graham reminds us, a gift given in full on the first Easter:

When I see Jesus Christ hanging on the cross, I see the nails in His hands, I see the spike in His feet, I see the spear in His side, I see the crown of thorns upon His brow, and I remember that “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son” (John 3:16) to take my place on the cross. In these days of uncertainty and confusion, these are gifts that go beyond our power to understand. And yet they are the gifts of God that became ours because we have received Jesus Christ as our Savior.

This gift of salvation can be yours. We’re the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. For a free booklet about what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, call us toll-free at 1-866-JESUS-CARES or visit billygraham.org.

GOD's WILL FOR US
Mood:  happy
Topic: Hebrews 10:35 - 39

Before Creation, God ordained Jesus' coming to earth, His death on the cross, and our redemption. He also planned work for each of us to do, which is for our good and His glory. (Ephesians 2:10) To accomplish His plans, God equips us with different spiritual gifts. He also provides the Holy Spirit to help us understand and follow His moral and personal will for us.

First, let's examine His moral will, which applies to all of us. Through the Scriptures, He gives us clear requirements for living a God - honoring life. These include proper sexual behavior (1 Thessalonians 4:3), a thankful attitude (1 Thessalonians 5:18), a forgiving mindset (Ephesians 4:32), a servant's heart (Galatians 5:13), and involvement in a local church. (Hebrews 10:25) We need to pay attention to the commands and warnings of Scripture in order to know and obey the Lord's moral will.

Second, God has designed a personal will for every one of us that begins at birth. Our personality, abilities, vocation, marital status, and even lifespan are built into His plan. He sees each individual as having great value and willingly invests Himself in His children's lives through the indwelling Holy Spirit. He calls us to fulfill His personal will and commits Himself to working for our very best.

God's plan isn't derailed by difficult circumstances or even by our sinful behavior. He is sovereign and weaves all factors together to accomplish what He has ordained. (Romans 8:28) God wants to direct our path each step of the way. (Proverbs 3:5 - 6) Are you seeking His guidance on a daily basis?

GOD's PLAN FOR CHRIST's COMING
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Luke 2:1 - 14
Galatians chapter four, verse four tells us, "But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son." With those simple words, the apostle Paul sums up much of the Old Testament. The fullness of time refers to all of God's preparations for sending Jesus Christ into the world to die for our sins. The Father's hand was organizing world events to bring about the most powerful incident ever. The story of Christ's coming is the story of human history.

Pleased by Noah's faithfulness, God saved his family from the worldwide flood. That preserved the Messianic line through Shem. (Genesis 7:13; Luke 3:23-38) Later, after the Israelites made it to the Promised Land, they ended up losing it. Eventually the Persian king Cyrus defeated their Babylonian captors and allowed the Jewish people to rebuild Jerusalem.

With Alexander the Great's conquest of the known world, the Greek language spread, giving people a common tongue. More time passed, and the Roman conquests ushered in a new era of peace. Traveling became easier as good roads were built, and the seas were safe to sail.

Then, when the time was right, Jesus Christ was born. He would be crucified and resurrected in the rebuilt city. His Gospel could be shared in a common language and carried to faraway countries.

Now, many centuries later, you are able to learn about a heavenly Father who loves you so much that He sent His precious Son to redeem you from your sins. God guided human history so you could be saved!

FAITH DURING STORMS OF LIFE
Mood:  amorous
Topic: Mark 4:35 - 41

Who hasn't questioned God in the middle of one of life's storms? The disciples did. "The disciples woke [Jesus] up, shouting, 'Teacher, don't you care that we're going to drown?'" (Mark 4:38) We've all asked that at one time or another. "God, don't You care?"  We know that He does, but sometimes it seems as though He's distant as we're battered by raging storms.

{Story} One summer night during a severe thunderstorm a mother was tucking her small son into bed. She was about to turn the light off when he asked in a trembling voice, "Mommy, will you stay with me all night?" Smiling, the mother gave him a warm, reassuring hug and said tenderly, "I can't dear. I have to sleep in Daddy's room." A long silence followed. At last it was broken by a shaky voice saying, "The big sissy!" - Source unknown

We know that God loves us more deeply than we can ever know. It's not a question of whether we will be confronted with storms or not, but rather how we must face adversity: As people with hope and faith in an all - powerful God. Jesus never promised that we'd have an easy life, but He did promise that he would be with us "always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

King David prayed this way in thanks to God in spite of all of his troubles:

The Lord is my light and my salvation

so why should I be afraid?

The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger,

so why should I tremble?

The one thing I ask of the Lord

the thing I seek most is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,

delighting in the Lord's perfections and meditating in his Temple.

For he will conceal me there when troubles come;

He will hide me in his sanctuary.

He will place me out of reach on a high rock. (Psalm 27:1,4,5)

If we believe that God is the one "who is, who always was, and who is still to come - the Almighty One."  (Revelation 1:8) ultimately what do we have to fear? We may not be all - knowing like God is, but because of Jesus' death on the cross for our salvation, we can be assured that no matter what storms we temporarily face, that our place with God in eternity is assured.

MEDITATING ON THE CHRIST CHILD
Mood:  accident prone
Topic: Luke 2:19

Merry Christmas! Today is most likely a busy day for you. There are meals to cook, guests to welcome, places to go, people to see, gifts to unwrap, and possibly, even a few gifts to be wrapped! This holy day can certainly be hectic for all of us.

Maybe your Christmas is just getting started. Or perhaps, the holiday is drawing to a close. Whatever the case, this is a moment of meditation in the midst of one of the busiest days of the year. So, In Touch wants to give you one word of counsel: slow down. For the next few moments, let the responsibilities and concerns of today slide off your shoulders. Allow the demands of family and friends to disappear. Focus your thoughts on that baby in the manger. Slow down, and think about... Jesus.

One of the most powerful, yet overlooked, verses in the Christmas story may be Luke 2:19. Just picture it: the newborn Christ crying in the night, a new father frantically trying to provide a comfortable shelter in the unusual setting, animals rustling around, strangers interrupting an intimate moment.

Without a doubt, the first Christmas was hectic, too. And yet, there was Mary, calmly taking it all in. She knew every aspect of this night was important. Yet, her total focus was on the child in her arms. She did not simply notice what was happening; she "treasured all these things and pondering them in her heart."  She breathed in the full experience and held it in her spirit. As you celebrate today, take the time to truly experience the wonder of Christmas, and ponder it in your heart as well.
