THE EXPRESSIONS OF THE LOVE OF GOD

God's unconditional love guarantees that He, like the Prodigal Son's father, is always waiting to welcome back sinners. (Luke 15:20) He accepts us no matter how dirty we are from sin or how disgraced from failure.

In The Five Love Languages, Dr. Gary Chapman identifies several common styles of communicating love. These same "languages" describe some of the ways God expresses His care for us:

God's first way of expression is through touch. Our heavenly Father reaches out to physically reassure us through the arms and hands of fellow believers.

Second, is quality time. We need intimacy with the Lord in order for our relationship to grow. He is always ready to spend time with us.

Third, God expresses Himself through service. Jesus said that He came to serve. (Mark 10:45) The Lord goes before us to protect, provide, and guide us onto the correct path for our lives.

Fourth, is gift giving. "Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above" (James 1:17). Each blessing in our lives is an expression of God's care.

And the final way God expresses his love to us is through words of encouragement. The Scriptures are packed with the Lord's inspiring and encouraging messages for believers. He also sends people into our lives to offer praise and godly counsel.

These are some of the ways God shows us His love. In turn, we must allow His love to flow through us to others. Ultimately, we'll discover that every person will respond to one or more of these methods of communicating God's love.

HOW GOD EXPRESSES LOVE

God loves every person He created. We could spend an entire day talking about the ways He expresses His love, and we'd still be unable to mention every one. But let's take a look at a few examples from Scripture.

Creation is a tangible love message. God made a beautiful world for us to enjoy. He didn't have to make the earth interesting to observe or explore. But He did so because He delights in our pleasure. He also enjoys meeting our needs, which He often accomplishes through other people. For that reason, He formed the body of Christ. He made believers into a family so that we could look to each other for encouragement and support.

People can DECIDE whether or not to join the family of believers. That freedom is an expression of God's love, too. FREE WILL allows us to choose obedience, which makes us grow into mature followers who bear Christ's image. Another important example of God's love is that He causes all things, even hardships, to work for our ultimate good. And, of course, His greatest expression of love is the CROSS, where Jesus paid our sin - debt and purchased our salvation.

God could have chosen to offer salvation and nothing more. But He did not stop there. He provided each believer with the Holy Spirit as a comforter and guide. We have the uninterrupted presence of God in our lives because He wants to spend time with us!

Everything God does is an expression of His love. Take a moment to list a few of the blessings He has poured into your life recently. Let your gratitude be heard.

ORIGIN OF OUR NEEDS

The youngster ran out the door to join his friends. Twenty minutes later he was back. "I thought you were meeting your friends down at the ball field," his Mother commented.

But before he could answer, she noticed the look of hurt on his face and asked: "Honey, what happened?"

"Mom, they didn't choose me to play on either one of their teams. Nobody likes me."

Disappointments like this one may seem trivial from an adult's perspective, but they're not. Rejection can leave a person feeling left out and disillusioned. Incidents like this also have the power to shape our personalities and self - images.

"I'm sorry, you were not chosen," replied the boy's mother. "Sometimes things happen that are hurtful, but always remember you mean a lot to me and your Dad."

One of the greatest needs of our society is the need to belong. We want to know we matter to someone else. How we choose to meet this need is critical to our sense of self - worth and to our relationship with God.

Jesus Christ holds the greatest amount of acceptance you could ever hope to find. No matter what turns your life has taken or who has rejected you, God promises to love and accept you when you come to Him. And the fact remains that He will always choose you to be on His team!

THE DESIRES OF YOUR HEART

Topic: Psalm 37:1 - 8
You may have heard God's promise to give you "the desires of your heart." But too quick a glance at Psalm 37:4 will lead only to frustration and disappointment. To understand the scope of God's awesome promise, we must explore the conditions that He placed around this passage.

First, Psalm 37:1-2 tells us not to fret about or envy "evildoers." In other words, we shouldn't be consumed with the success of unrighteous people. God will deal with them. Your responsibility is to watch your own actions.

Next, verse 3 instructs us to "trust in the LORD," "do good," and "cultivate faithfulness." God is interested in our maturity. He wants to be able to trust us with life's major decisions, which usually relate to our deepest desires.

In verse 4, we are clearly told to "delight . . . in the LORD." We should seek His desires. If we truly pursue God's good pleasure, our desires will fall right into place.

Then, verse 5 commands that we "commit [our] way to the LORD" and trust Him. When we focus our steps on His path, we know we're heading in the right direction. God will not bless our sinful missteps. Our duty is to keep to His purposeful plan.

Finally, verse 7 calls us to "rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him."  Remember, God's timing is perfect. If we see no immediate response to a faithful prayer, we must trust Him for His flawless timing.

Are you frustrated by God's response to your desires? Pray through Psalm 37:1-8. Then, ask the Lord to bring your will perfectly in line with His.

Have you ever tried to make a perfectly straight line of footprints in the snow? It's not as easy as you might think. Faced with the challenge, most people may tread slow and steady, heads down, focusing intensely at their feet. When someone attempts this task with their eyes cast downward, you can be sure they'll fail. The footprints will be crooked.

When you walk with your eyes on your feet, you have no idea where you're going. The experience is entirely self - centered. There's no perspective because you cannot see how you fit into the larger landscape. There's no genuine focus, since every step treads over the last step's focal point. You haven't imagined yourself as part of a bigger picture. So for all intents and purposes, you simply plod through the snow aimlessly.

The only way to make a straight line of footprints is to forget about your feet. The key is to look straight ahead and find a fence post, street sign, or tree off in the distance. Then, with your eyes fixed on that target, just start walking. If you've locked your focus on something outside of yourself, your path will be straight every time.

The same is true in our spiritual lives. If we walk through life concentrating inwardly, we'll fail to see the bigger picture and veer off course. But when we focus beyond ourselves and fix our thoughts and spiritual eyes on Jesus, we can trust that our paths will be straight and trustworthy every step of the way (Isaiah 26:3 NLT).

A LIFE CHANGING PRAYER

Topic: Colossians 1:9 -14
The most powerful act anyone can perform is to pray for someone. Of course, the power is not in the praying, but in the release God gives in His perfect answer to our prayers. Paul provides an example of one of the most effective prayers we could utter. He prays that the Colossian church:

-- May be filled with the knowledge of God's will. What a wonderful gesture to ask God to make clear for family members or friends the precise, exact decisions He wishes them to make in every circumstance.

-- May walk in a manner worthy of the Lord. This means asking that someone's life will have weight - will count eternally and not temporally.

-- May bear fruit in every good work. We should pray for loved ones to remain so Christ - centered that He through them determines their conversation, conduct, and character.

-- May increase in the knowledge of God. Can there be a more precious request than that of wanting someone to grow ever closer to our heavenly Father?

-- May be strengthened and sustained with the power of God. Within an evil world system, we need the supernatural power of God to help us bear up under the strain.

-- May give thanks that we already have qualified as saints of God. There is nothing for which we should be more appreciative.

TOO BUSY NOT TO PRAY

Have you ever forgone your daily prayer time because you felt too busy? When we surrender quiet time for something else, we're making a statement about our priorities. It is a not - so - subtle way of saying, "Jesus, my calendar is more important to me than You are today. I'll catch up with You later."

We all do this from time to time. It's so easy to be pulled out of the prayer closet. We think we can "make up" the time later because God will always be there. We seem to have taken God's eternal, indwelling presence for granted.

We fail to realize that our quiet moments with the Lord empower us to face the challenges of each day. Therefore, the busier our day, the more time we should spend in prayer preparing for it! The Bible clearly shows that Jesus Himself protected His private time with the Father. No one had more on his mind, had more things to do, or was in greater demand than Jesus. And yet, His busiest days are the times we see Him pulling away from the crowds in order to pray.

Is prayer the first thing you remove from your daily agenda when the schedule fills up? Protect that time every day at all cost. Remember that Jesus is God. If He considered prayer necessary to prepare for His busiest days, then it is absolutely essential for the rest of us!

THE PRICE OF PRAYERLESSNESS

Imagine walking through a crowded airport. You cannot move without bumping into someone. You're late for your flight, and the wheels just broke on your over - packed suitcase.

With no other option, you're forced to carry the luggage and slowly maneuver through the congested lobby toward the ticketing area. Almost immediately, a young gentleman offers to carry your bags, but you pridefully refuse. When you realize the ticket counter is two levels up, you make your way to the stairs. Someone asks you if it would be easier to take the elevator. But you are determined to carry your bags.

As you finally make it to the top of the steps, your arms feel numb from the pressure of your bags. Your legs are starting to buckle from the weight. Your back is aching from supporting the heavy load. Then, you spot a collection of unused baggage carts. But you ignore them, self - assured that you can handle the bags yourself.

Isn't this a silly story? Who would prefer to carry such a heavy burden, ignoring every opportunity to lay it down? And yet, many believers do just that. Our Father has called us to lay our cares at His feet. But when we fail to come to God in prayer, we're just as foolish as the man staggering with his bags through the airport.

Are you trying to carry a greater burden than you can bear? Don't ignore God's offer to help. The truth is, we really can't "do it ourselves," and God never wanted us to try.

REFUSING TO WAIT ON GOD

Refusing to wait on God is costly. When we run ahead of God or lag behind Him, we move outside of the Lord's will. Choosing to do the right thing at the wrong time makes us vulnerable to Satan's schemes and delays or derails God's blessings. Our independent actions might also bring confusion to us and others, as situations may turn out differently than we expected.

We also cause ourselves unnecessary grief. For example, if we use credit cards to purchase electronic gadgets, unneeded clothes, and other indulgences, debt will pile up beyond our ability to pay. Then our credit rating will plummet, with little financial relief in sight. But when we manage money in accordance with biblical principles, our lifestyle will be less lavish. But we will have peace of mind and the ability to borrow if necessary.

Another example is quitting a job out of frustration before God has released us from it. We might subsequently discover that, had we held on a while longer, we would have received another more satisfying position.

Certain character qualities are necessary if we are to develop a lifestyle of waiting on God. We need patience to endure our present situation, persistence to complete our current responsibilities, and courage to trust God and await His solution in the midst of discomfort.

INTIMACY WITH GOD

Transparency is an oft - overlooked element in our growing closer to Jesus Christ. Intimacy with the Lord requires our full, humble, and honest openness before Him.

Jesus Himself was a wonderful model of openness as He dealt with His disciples. For instance, we read in today's Bible verse that, in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus shared with the disciples His anguish over His upcoming crucifixion and brief separation from God the Father.

Knowing that the sins of the entire world were about to be cast upon Him, Jesus grieved, even to point of near death. Here was God, clothed in human flesh, being completely honest, open, and forthright about His emotions. This is how Christ would have us react to Him.

A proud, arrogant, egotistical, self - sufficient Christianity bristles at the thought of such transparency. Why should I burden God with this when I can handle it myself? I'm just not going to deal with God about this. Such thinking and behavior goes against everything for which God created us.

However, God cherishes and honors a humble, contrite spirit from someone trying to be himself or herself before the Lord. Confess sin, worry, doubt, and fear. He already knows all, but your willingness to intimately share with Him all the details speaks volumes about the bent of your heart.

THE PLAN OF GOD FOR OUR LIFE

How do we discover God's plan for our lives?

We must first learn to glorify Him. He commands us to let our lights shine before men so we'll bear spiritual fruit that glorifies Him. As our lives increasingly follow the Savior's pattern, our thoughts and responses will bring Jesus praise and point others to Him.

Another way to discover God's will is by conforming to Christ's likeness. With each opportunity that we encounter, we must make ask if we will become more like Jesus or if we'll be tempted in our weaker areas and turn away from Him. If we submit our minds and emotions to the Lord, His Spirit will build Jesus' character qualities into our lives. As we rely on the Holy Spirit, He'll help us make wise decisions and guide us safely past temptation.

When trying to decide if something is God's will, ask yourself, Is this in line with the Bible? Throughout the Scriptures, the heavenly Father has revealed what pleases Him. His commands are clear regarding the way born - again believers should live. Our homes, businesses, and community lives are to function according to His will.

Whether in your family, workplace, or neighborhood, don't let yourself be pressured into actions or decisions that upset God. Train yourself to stop and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal whether each choice will bring God glory, help develop Christ's character in you, and keep you in the center of God's plan and purpose. Wait on Him, and don't step ahead until you have an answer.

SETTING GOALS TO ACHIEVE THE PLAN OF GOD

God has a purpose for our lives and goals for us to accomplish. (Ephesians 2:10) To fulfill His plans, we need to set goals that are consistent with what He has in mind for us. Once we know the direction God wants us to take, we can begin taking steps toward fulfilling His purpose.

First, we must have a clear picture of the goal. The more defined and well thought - out our mission is, the more sensitive we'll be to the opportunities God places in our paths.

Second, we need to be confident that we can succeed through Christ. We should look to the future in light of God's presence within us, His infinite resources, and His unwavering promises. (Philippians 4:19; 2 Corinthians 1:20)

Third, we should have a consuming desire to accomplish God's plan. This is based on the value we place on accomplishing our goals and focusing on the One who has set those goals. God's sacrificial, unending love will serve as a great motivator. (1 John 4:9-11)

Fourth, set a course of action. Break a large goal into smaller, achievable tasks and cover each step with prayer that seeks instruction from God.

Finally, establish a timetable. Deadlines help to keep us moving forward. But it is okay to adjust them as circumstances change.

In Genesis 24, Abraham's trusted servant is a picture of the characteristics needed to reach a godly objective. Those characteristics are to know our goals, maintain confidence, be passionate, have a plan, and set deadlines. What is the Lord's purpose for this season of your life? GOALS AND CONSCIENCE

We've spent some time on the issue of goal - setting and how to accomplish what God has called us to do. We've also examined how to determine whether or not a goal is from the Lord. The final word on the topic is simply this: a godly goal will never force you to violate your conscience.

This may seem like an obvious statement, but think about it for a minute. Most likely, there's been a time or two when you honestly believed you were working toward the right goal. But in order to get there, you had to act in a way that caused a sting in your conscience. Whenever that happens, you can be sure God is not in that goal.

As we spend time in prayer and Bible study, the Holy Spirit weaves Himself in and through our conscience. It becomes a type of filter through which we process our behavior and decisions. So, whenever we do something that causes "static" in our conscience, that's God's way of telling us that we are stepping out of bounds - that we have left His path.

Our heavenly Father will never place a goal at the end of a godless trail. The only thing you will find there is heartache, disappointment, and regret. If reaching an objective requires you to violate your conscience, then watch out! You are headed where God has not called you, and you can trust that the goal is your own - not His. Your conscience is a God - given warning system. Learn to appreciate, and obey, the alerts it sends you.

TESTING YOUR GOALS

I have always made it a practice to set specific, measurable goals for the future. The things we want to accomplish certainly will not happen by accident. Instead, we should be diligent planners as we seek the Lord's guidance on what He wants us to achieve. And as He reveals these godly goals to us, we must continually test them to guarantee that they are truly of Him, and not simply our own earthly ambitions.

Whenever a new goal comes to my mind, the first thing I asks is, Will I be a better person for setting and accomplishing this goal? It is extremely important to think of the long - term consequences! Too often, we want something because it will make us happy in the short term. Believers need to think months and years down the road. Doing so will allow us to see whether our goals will contribute to the overall growth God desires in us.

Consider your personal goals. What is the motivation? Is it money, power, or prestige? There's nothing inherently wrong with these things. They, too, can be used for God's glory. But will money make you a better person? No. Will influence or notoriety? No. These may be indirect consequences of achieving godly goals, but they are not the goals themselves.

Remember, the Lord is much more interested in your long - term development than in your short - term comfort. If your goals don't increase your spiritual maturity, then you must question whether or not they are truly of God. And if they are not, then be wise, and ask Him for the strength to let them go.

THE RESULT OF NOT SETTING GOALS

Some people believe goal setting undercuts trust in God. Many others refuse to be goal - oriented because they are lazy or fear failure. To be successful in the Christian life, we must accept that we will occasionally fail. Then, we must decide to get to work anyway. The alternative is to let fear or laziness dictate our actions. That would lead to one of three results: waste, drifting, or mediocrity.

It is extremely important to plan wisely, and then, to follow through on whatever steps that preparation calls for. For instance, we have to build time into our schedule for ourselves and our families. Otherwise, our day can easily be gobbled up by work and wasted time.

Refusing to set goals means we'll be acting without purpose. We will have spent time, money, and energy, and lack productivity. What will be, will be is unscriptural thinking that causes a believer to "drift."  We have the privilege of planning our life according to God's guidance.

Throughout the Bible, the Lord directs His servants in setting goals, and then He provides the strength to achieve them. A life lacking goals is mediocre at best. Without ambitions to work toward, we have no opportunity for success. And if we never experience the thrill of achieving a long sought - after goal, we will be very disappointed with our life.

No one wants a mediocre existence of waste and apathy. A believer should never settle for less than GOD's BEST. The indwelling Holy Spirit offers each of us the great potential to be a godly goal setter.

SHOULD YOU SET GOALS?

Verse after verse of Scripture encourages believers to trust God for their needs. Some people, including church leaders, think those passages indicate believers should not set their own goals. To them, setting goals indicates a lack of confidence in our heavenly Father. But, this interpretation fails to acknowledge trust as an important discipline and turns it into apathy.

Goal setting helps us determine where to focus our energy to accomplish the work the Lord has for us to do (Ephesians 2:10). It is also scriptural. In Genesis 6, we learn Noah built an ark with God's instruction. In chapter 24 of Genesis, Abraham sent a servant out to find a wife for his son Isaac. And in Genesis 41, Joseph stockpiled food to supply Egypt through a famine. In Philippians 3:10 - 14, the apostle Paul sought deeper knowledge of Jesus Christ.

As any of these wise men could confirm, reaching for a goal increases faith. Stretch a rubber band wide, and - when allowed to relax - it will be slightly larger. Faith works the same way. When we decide to do something that requires more resources than we have, we must depend upon God to do the work through us. And if we rely on Him for the wisdom to set right goals, then we can trust Him to enable us to achieve them.

Setting goals is the most basic step toward achieving anything worthwhile. If we are to succeed, we must be purposeful in deciding how to live. Any wise man or woman knows the only way to be sure of a goal's value is to rely on the Lord's guidance in setting it.

HOW TO SET RIGHT PRIORITIES

The Scriptures contain many examples of men and women who had misplaced priorities. Often, they are otherwise godly people who had a momentary lapse in judgment. This should serve as a warning for every believer to consider the importance of holding onto wrong thoughts and desires.

For good purposes or bad, we set priorities in one of three ways: 1) by evaluating which things ought to carry the most importance; 2) by giving in to pressure and letting people or circumstances dictate how we should prioritize; or 3) by drifting into habits and modes of thinking that become a way of life.

Drifting should be avoided by wise believers because it can lead to a life that feels meaningless. Priorities should be in place before we face challenging circumstances and people. That way, we can be firm in our commitment. The only practical choice, then, is to prioritize on purpose. We do that by setting a goal to live according to God's purpose and plan. The priorities we choose are determined by what we value.

But sometimes, "putting first things first" can be frustrating since there are so many things to distract us. If we have a right relationship, with God is our highest priority, then those actions and thoughts that strengthen our connection with Him will be the most important. We need to be disciplined in following our goals because living purposefully is seldom easy. The good news is that God knows our heart, and He will honor our sincere attempts to put Him first.

MISPLACED PRIORITIES

The Lord's parable of the foolish, wealthy man is a study in misplaced priorities. Believers today can learn from three mistakes he made: 1) he provided for himself, not for others; 2) he provided for his body, not for his spirit; and 3) he provided for this life, not for the life to come. There is always a penalty for misplaced priorities. This foolish man passed away with no opportunity to enjoy his goods. Even worse, he died with a bankrupt soul.

Serving the Lord and His kingdom is the key to setting proper goals. When believers make service for God a priority, they'll use a lens of righteousness to order their priorities. The question we should be asking is not "What shall I do?" but rather "Lord, what would You have me do?" The answer should be prayerfully sought and biblically evaluated. It dictates which things we must put first in order to achieve God's purpose for our life.

Life is not something that simply happens to people. Where we are today is largely determined by the way we prioritize our concerns in previous months and years. This means we can positively impact our future by organizing our priorities according to biblical guidelines. Then, unlike the rich, foolish man in Jesus' parable, we will learn the eternal value of providing for others so our own soul is fed. More than that, we will obey Jesus' command from Matthew 6:20, "Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal."

UNSHAKABLE PEACE

The Lord has only good plans in store for your life. (Jeremiah 29:11) You may go through difficult times, but God promises to use every trial to build "good" into your life. (Romans 8:28) When Satan tells you to worry, God has the opposite in mind. He wants you to trust Him and to experience His peace on a daily basis. How do we gain and retain the true peace of God?

*  Recognize your dependence is on God. The heart that finds its identity in Jesus Christ is a heart of peace. The person who rushes here and there to solve his own problems quickly can become a person of strife and worry. Take responsibility for your actions, but let God have the reins to your life.

* Pray. The enemy cannot defeat you when you are on your spiritual knees before God in prayer. This is the true pathway to unshakable peace.

* Trust God. When thoughts of fear invade your mind, tell the Lord what you are feeling and claim His presence as your protection and shelter. David prayed, "Strengthen my arms so I can bend a bow of bronze." In other words, "Strengthen my faith, Lord, so I won't doubt your goodness."

*  Focus only on God. Don't cling to negative thoughts. Set the focus of your heart on God and His possibilities. When God views your life, He sees only potential. You can live life to the fullest because Christ is alive in you and all things are under His feet.

REMAINING IN GOD's WILL

The Gospel writers carefully recorded the events during and after Jesus' life on earth. Because of their efforts, we know God's plans for His disciples. On the day Jesus called Peter, Andrew, James, and John into ministry, they did not know any of this. Still, these men went on to preach the Good News that offers redemption to the world.

These four disciples, along with other faithful followers, would be the foundation of Christ's church. Peter, in particular, would be a leader among leaders. But as the four men repaired nets and discussed the day's catch with their coworkers, they knew none of this.

Jesus' words were simple: "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." All Peter, Andrew, James, and John knew was that He was asking them to leave their jobs, alter their relationships with loved ones, and adjust their religious beliefs to follow a radical preacher claiming to be God's Son. (Matthew 4:18 -19; 16:16 -17) And they did.

Jesus did not give His disciples many details in their first meeting. Nor does God typically offer an explanation when He wants us to make changes in our lives. Only later do we see the effects of our obedience.

The Bible says the Lord has an awesome purpose for every believer. Any adjustment He calls for is intended to guarantee the fulfillment of His plans for us. (Jeremiah 29:11) Those of us who adjust thoughts, words, and deeds - according to God's guidance - remain in the center of His will. Our reward for accepting the Lord's challenge to change and grow is an awesome opportunity to serve and to be blessed with His best.
