REQUIREMENTS FOR ANSWERED PRAYER
Topic: John 14:13 -15
The young family had stepped outside of the will of God several months earlier. They stopped attending church regularly, stopped tithing altogether, and gradually decreased in service as their interest in prayer and reading the Bible slowly waned. But then slowly the husband started noticing changes.

Things seemed to wear out more easily, including their bodies. Colds and infections were more frequent. So were trips to the mechanic as the cars continued to have nagging problems. The couple's investments lagged, even lost ground, as the rest of the economy boomed. Trying to fill the void, they began making unwise financial decisions that further increased their problems, and their marriage started to strain under the duress.

Finally, the young couple realized what went wrong, who they were leaving out: God.

If there is sustained, habitual sin in our lives, it will affect God's response to our prayers. If He continued to answer all of our prayers despite our sinful conduct, He in effect would be condoning our actions, and a Holy God cannot sanction sin. One of the ways God gets our attention is by withholding blessings when there is sin in our lives.

We should always consider it God's gracious gift, a warning system He has put in place to steer us back within His will.

MOSES: FORWARD BY FAITH
Topic: Exodus 14
Living by faith guarantees hardship. People don't like this message, but it's true. Believers who choose to completely surrender and obey God will experience suffering at times and be asked to make painful sacrifices. To serve the Lord, Moses had to choose to go forward by faith in spite of difficult challenges.

Moses grew up in the Pharaoh's palace. He knew all about the Egyptian ruler's pride, as well as the importance of Hebrew slave labor. With this knowledge, Moses recognized how difficult it would be to carry out God's command to free His people. But Moses left his comfortable life to obey the Lord.

Moses' task only began with the Hebrew slaves' release. He then spent more than 40 years leading these maligned people. He interceded for them when they disobeyed God and called upon the Lord for rescue when they faced trouble.

Moses' life was marked by challenge and sacrifice. But more than that, his life was shaped by an intimate relationship with God. Every hardship that knocked away his self-trust strengthened his faith in the Lord. When a new challenge arose, Moses first turned to God for guidance and provision.

First Peter 4 tells us that trials produce deeper intimacy with the Lord. Moses' life demonstrates this principle, which holds true for believers today. Hardships are inevitable. Sure, we could try doing everything in our power to avoid difficulties. But that would be unsuccessful. The wiser approach is to meet the challenge and go forward by faith.

THE WAY OF FAITH
Topic: Hebrews 11:23 -28
Moses stood before Pharaoh and ordered the powerful ruler to release the Israelites. The confrontation must have seemed a ridiculous spectacle, even to the slaves Moses had been sent to rescue. But, after ten plagues and many dealings with the Egyptian leader, Moses brought the country to its knees with a shepherd's staff and his faith in God.

It's easy to be misunderstood when you choose to walk by faith instead of living on the basis of feelings, opinions, and logic. Our actions may appear unreasonable to others, and sometimes even to ourselves. But what could be more reasonable than allowing our all-powerful Father to guide us? Just like Moses, we may find our talents and abilities to be inadequate for certain tasks. But Second Corinthians 12:9 says God's power will accomplish through us what needs to be done. The Lord isn't always "reasonable" as we interpret reason. But He works out our circumstances through our obedient actions. We can be confident that He who used a shepherd to challenge a Pharaoh is trustworthy.

Living by faith requires releasing our human sense of what's best and reasonable in order to fully rely on God. This involves obeying when the Lord indicates we're to speak or act. God wants us to trust His plan for our lives. He's constantly directing circumstances and people to ensure His purpose is achieved.

Whatever the challenge, you can be successful by choosing to depend entirely upon God. He'll place you before your personal Pharaoh and make you victorious.

FORWARD BY FAITH
Topic: Genesis 39
Every believer will fail occasionally in his or her faith. When that happens, how do we keep doubts to a minimum? The key is to remain focused on God so that we can move forward in His will.

Consider the Old Testament hero, Joseph, who trusted in God through the traumatic events of his teenage years. Faith carried him through betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment. Joseph trusted in the Lord. He didn't allow circumstances, environment, or the opinions of others to distract him from acting in God's will. Joseph believed that every situation he faced was by God's design.

Some people react to trials by complaining. They may say the situation is unfair and undeserved. They're so focused on circumstances and how unlucky they are that they miss opportunities to serve God.

Joseph chose a different approach. Even though he'd been sold into slavery by his brothers, he decided to work with excellence. His duties in Potiphar's house were probably menial. But he performed them as if he were working for the Lord. Only through this kind of commitment could Joseph have earned the attention and respect of his master. As a result, he was rewarded with greater responsibility.

As Joseph moved through one difficulty after another, he stayed focused on God. Genesis 37:10 says that the Lord promised to raise Joseph to a position of leadership. He took a practical approach to the downward turn in his fortunes: he kept thinking about God and serving Him instead of dwelling on his trials.

FAITH's FIXED FOCUS
James calls believers to "ask [God] in faith without any doubting." This may seem unreasonable since doubt is a natural human response. But James realized that when a person consistently feels uncertain about the Lord's provision, he or she isn't practicing faith.

At times, doubts will enter the believer's mind. But we should release these worries in favor of trust. How will we look to God with confidence if we don't know that He's trustworthy? It's important to learn His nature and characteristics. Then, we fix our attention on Him and focus upon His faithfulness, instead of wringing our hands over circumstances.

Before Scripture was fully recorded, parents passed down family stories about God. That's how young Joseph received the examples of his ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. From such a rich oral history, he learned deep truths about God's sovereignty, faithfulness, and the consequences of doubting the Lord. As a teenager, Joseph was sold into slavery. Then, he realized that he needed to fix his focus upon God. He did so because he trusted that the One who guided his ancestors would care for him, too.

The stories of Joseph, his ancestors, and many others in Scripture are relevant to our lives. We can find many examples of unwavering faith in our church community. If your doubts outweigh your faith, your heavenly Father is pleased to teach you about Himself through stories of other believers. All you have to do is open the Bible and your heart.

WHAT IS THE UNPARDONABLE SIN?
Topic: Matthew 12:22 - 32
No one today can commit the unpardonable sin. According to the Bible, the only action God will not pardon is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, committed by the Pharisees. The Jewish religious leaders were shown compelling evidence that Jesus was God's Son. But they chose to undermine Him in hopes of maintaining their own power. After witnessing Christ's miracles, the Pharisees blasphemed by claiming His supernatural power was from Satan. In Matthew 12:22-32, Jesus responds to their sin by warning that whoever spoke this way against the Holy Spirit wouldn't be forgiven.

People today don't have the undeniable physical presence of Jesus Christ in the world, so they can't recreate the Pharisees' sinful event. But it's still possible to end up in an unpardonable state. This happens when a person rejects the Holy Spirit's call to salvation and holy living, and then dies in a condition of unbelief.

The stages leading to an unpardonable state are simple. An unbeliever chooses to sin, even though he knows it's wrong. He resists the Holy Spirit's gentle prompts toward conviction and salvation. Over many years, this hardens his heart against God. A time comes when the Holy Spirit makes no impression. Any desire for the Lord has dried up. No sermon or song can move him. His heart is hardened to the gospel.

No sin can separate you from God's love. Only a conscious decision to reject the Lord can result in your spending an eternity apart from Him. Don't wait another minute to receive His offer of salvation.

CAN YOU BE FORGIVEN ?
Topic: 1 Corinthians 6:9 -11
If you feel guilty about past sins, the Scriptures have a reassuring message for you. The Corinthian believers were struggling, too. And, in First Corinthians 6:11, Paul offered to them - and us - this counsel and hope: "Such [sinners] were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God."

In the verses preceding these encouraging words, Paul lists some disgraceful lifestyles that continue to the modern day. Every week, pastors hear from people who ask whether the Lord can forgive them for adultery, abuse of family members, a homosexual lifestyle or other transgressions. The answer is yes. He can and will forgive every sin, just as 1 John 1:9 says.

Until believers understand how the Lord forgives and removes sin, they'll carry the guilt. Promises to do better simply don't work. Forgiveness is based only on the shed blood of Jesus Christ. He took your sin on the cross and died in your place. When you acknowledge that Jesus alone can make you righteous before God, you're set free. You're given a new mindset, one guided by the Holy Spirit to focus upon the things of God instead of sinful desires.

Don't wake up each morning to face another day of dragging your guilt around. You don't have to. Psalm 103:12 says the Lord is waiting to take that load from you and cast it as far as the east is from the west. All you must do is hand over your burden and receive His forgiveness.

FELLOWSHIP WITH JESUS
Topic: Luke 10:40 - 42
It never stops -- the vicious cycle of doing things. Running errands, cleaning the house, picking up the kids, putting in extra time on your project at work, studying for another big test. You just keep going and going with no end in sight.

It can even become a pattern in your church life. Helping with prayer meeting, keeping the nursery, teaching Sunday school, visiting the shut-ins, calling last week's visitors. It goes on and on and on until you're spending all this time working for the Lord but you're not spending time on what He desires from you most: your fellowship.

John wanted to share the good news of Christ so others would come to know Him and fellowship with Him. (I John 1:3, 6) He knew what the most needful thing in his life was.

We need to remember that as well. Mary knew it was better to sit at the feet of Jesus, loving Him and sharing with Him, rather than preparing a five - course dinner like Martha.

To know Him more intimately, we must spend time with Him. Out of this closer relationship, our love for Him grows and we desire to serve Him more.

When Jesus becomes our sole focus, nothing can shake us. If we make fellowship with Him a priority, He will make Himself known to us like we've never known Him before.

MOTHER: GOD's SERVANT
Topic: 1 Samuel 1:1-18

Before a child ever hears about the Lord at church, he or she witnesses a parent's example of faith. For this reason, all children share the common need for a godly mother.

Love toward God multiplies and spills out from believers onto others, including sons and daughters. God's care is pure and unselfish, much different than what the world offers. When we experience His concern, provision, and protection, it's easier for our children to grow up loving God.

Every child needs a mother who trusts God. A perfect mother is unrealistic. And she wouldn't be good for her kids in the long run. Witnessing Mom's trust during trials and heartbreaks is the way children learn to place their faith in God. Teaching little ones to trust ensures that they'll always know the heavenly Father is close, even when parents aren't.

Every child needs a mother who knows how to pray. A wise mom teaches her children how to access almighty God. Dr. Stanley still recalls his mother's voice as she knelt next to his bed each night. Thanks to her, he understood very early that God was always listening and willing to respond to his prayers.

A mother serves many people, including her spouse, children, extended family, and friends. But she must serve God first. When she accepts God's love, practices trust, and keeps a daily discipline of prayer and Bible reading, she'll find the strength to fulfill all of His requirements.

THE MOTHER EVERY CHILD NEEDS
Topic: 1 Samuel 1:19-28
No perfect model of motherhood exists. Children have different temperaments and personalities, and it takes all kinds of mothers to raise them well. But as different as kids are, they do have some common needs.

Every child needs a mother who wants her children. Nothing is more devastating to a youngster than to grow up feeling unwanted or unloved. A broken connection with mother can haunt a child throughout life. This may hinder relationships with Jesus Christ, friends, and spouses. As a future adult, that child may struggle with a suspicion that he or she is unlovable.

Every child needs a mother who cares for her children. To be healthy and stable adults, kids need a mom who invests in their body, mind, and spirit. Busy parents too often substitute material things for emotional and spiritual support. Buying the latest fashionable clothes may meet a desire. But talking and listening to understand a child's feelings meets the needs of the heart.

Every child needs a mother who'll surrender her children to God. From an early age, boys and girls should understand they belong to the Lord. Whatever God calls them to do, Mom needs to support His plan with love for them and faith in Him. First Samuel 1:28 indicates that children are a gift that parents should return to the Giver's service, just as Hannah did with her son Samuel.

Mothers aren't perfect. But God is. Through Him, a mom can fulfill her calling to want, protect, and surrender her children, no matter how old they are.

HONORING OUR MOMS
Topic: Matthew 16:24 -27
God gives every mother a special calling. She invests in her children's development and spiritual growth to fulfill this lifetime commitment.

A godly mother's memories are rich with times of reading Bible stories, teaching songs about Jesus, and explaining His importance to the whole family. This type of godly interaction forms a good basis for an intimate connection with her children.

The best way to honor Mom is by trusting Jesus Christ and living a surrendered, obedient life. Christian mothers provide their children with an example of how to follow the Lord. They do this through sacrifices, loving devotion to family and to Him, and the willingness to follow His will. Her greatest desire is for us to live a life devoted to Jesus, too. How honored she is when we choose to walk in God's will and surrender to His service.

Some of us have a mother who doesn't know Jesus as her personal Savior. First Corinthians 13:8 says, "love never fails." If we consistently show her respect through loving words and acts of kindness, we may get the perfect opportunity to lead her to a salvation.

Mothers desire a reward of knowing her time has been well spent. As we allow God to speak into our lives, we'll impact the lives of others. Our mothers will be honored. Commit to show love to your mom by devoting yourself to her, praying on her behalf, and living a godly life.

A STEP AWAY
Topic: Genesis 12:1-5

Years ago, Dr. Charles Stanley had a wonderful young man serving on his church staff. Dr. Stanley really liked him. He did a fabulous job, had a great attitude, and was a true asset to the ministry. But, at that time, the church was forced to make some necessary staff cutbacks. Dr. Stanley had to let this man go. Even though it was the right decision, Dr. Stanley had a difficult time informing him.

Later, Dr. Stanley saw him in public, and he made the most remarkable comment. He said, "You know, when you had to let me go, the first thing the Lord said to me was, "Well, now you're going to have to obey Me whether you want to or not!'"

He explained that he'd sensed the Lord calling him to seminary two years earlier. But he didn't go. He liked his ministry position at the church, made adequate money to care for his family, and enjoyed living in this area. He felt quite content with the way things were. And he simply couldn't let go of his comfort to follow the Lord's leading. In reality, his comfortable position had become an obstacle, so God removed it. But a year later, he was enrolled in seminary. He finally enjoyed the blessings of following God's call and plan for His life.

How frequently do we miss out on God's will because we've become comfortable where we are. Sometimes the call of faith is a call away from what we know and love. Is there any comfort in your life that may block your obedience to God? Renew your commitment to Him today, wherever He may lead.

WAYS TO HONOR OUR MOTHERS
Topic: 2 Corinthians 9:6 -15
Many of us know the blessing of a mother who always sought the best for her family. She offered physical care, emotional support, encouragement, and protection. God desires that we honor mothers throughout their lives. Consider three simple ways:

First, help her cheerfully. Mother appreciates helpers with a good attitude. But she also values their companionship. The family's willingness to spend time with Mom while she carries out her tasks will bring her joy. As children become adults, it's important that they find ways of making her a regular part of their lives.

Second, treat her kindly. The kind son or daughter desires to meet Mom's needs in thoughtful, sensitive ways. Young children can do this through respectful speech and obedient actions. Adults can demonstrate respect by hugging Mom and expressing how much they love her. They can also show care through acts of service. Families who live far apart still need to identify opportunities to assist her. Remember, the older Mother becomes, the more help she will need.

Third, provide for her generously. Ever notice how easily pleased some mothers are? Since she wants her husband and children to have what they desire, Mom often willingly accepts what's left over. But honoring a mother means meeting her needs first, giving more than the little she expects, and offering your very best.

Our heavenly Father helps us whenever we ask and treats us with infinite kindness. He provides generously for us. Let's do the same for our moms.

UNSHAKABLE PEACE
Topic: Philippians 4:5-7
The Lord has only good plans in store for your life. (Jeremiah 29:11) You may go through difficult times, but God promises to use every trial to build "good" into your life. (Romans 8:28) When Satan tells you to worry, God has the opposite in mind. He wants you to trust Him and to experience His peace on a daily basis. How do we gain and retain the true peace of God?

- Recognize your dependence is on God. The heart that finds its identity in Jesus Christ is a heart of peace. The person who rushes here and there to solve his own problems quickly can become a person of strife and worry. Take responsibility for your actions, but let God have the reins to your life.

- Pray. The enemy cannot defeat you when you are on your spiritual knees before God in prayer. This is the true pathway to unshakable peace.

- Trust God. When thoughts of fear invade your mind, tell the Lord what you are feeling and claim His presence as your protection and shelter. David prayed, "Strengthen my arms so I can bend a bow of bronze." In other words, "Strengthen my faith, Lord, so I won't doubt your goodness."

- Focus only on God. Don't cling to negative thoughts. Set the focus of your heart on God and His possibilities. When God views your life, He sees only potential. You can live life to the fullest because Christ is alive in you and all things are under His feet.

GENUINE AWARENESS
Topic: 2 Kings 6:15-17
If someone were to ask whether you were aware of God, you would no doubt exclaim, "Of course I am! I go to church, read my Bible, and pray all the time. I'm quite aware of God." Now, let's take it one crucial step further: Are you aware of God's presence and activity in your daily life?

This second question makes it a bit more personal, doesn't it? In my daily life? Right there, all the time? We would like to have that constant awareness of God's presence, but it is difficult. When hardships and trials strike at us out of nowhere, we often feel bewildered and wonder why God has left us so alone.

During times of difficulty, we might pray even harder and longer. We plead for help, but see little result. We cry, "Help ME! Give ME strength!" Or perhaps, "I believe this" or "I can do that." Do you notice the common factor there? The focus is all on me, me, me, I, I, I. Even during prayer, we may be aware only of ourselves, leaving the Lord out of the matter entirely.

At that point, we may find we're not really talking to the Father at all; we are talking to ourselves. Perhaps we are focusing on the problem and actually wishing for the ability to handle it on our own. We can, in effect, become completely blind to how God may be working.

Second Kings 6:15 -17 gives us a wonderful picture of what can happen when we remove our self-centered blinders and truly see God's hand at work. Open your eyes. Like Elisha's servant, you may be shocked to discover the help that God has already sent your way.

HONORING OUR WIVES AND MOTHERS
Topic: Romans 12:9-18
Throughout the Scriptures, the Lord calls us to love one another (Romans 13:8), live in harmony (Romans 12:16), and serve each other (Galatians 5:13). Husbands are in a position to put these words into practice with regard to their wives and mothers - as well as to influence the children to follow their example.

Showing honor begins with recognizing the enormous job every mom has been given. God has entrusted her with caring for the family - providing support and encouragement to her husband, training her children in godliness, and contributing to the well-being of the home. A Christian woman's desire is to carry out this mission in ways pleasing to the Lord. We can build her up by mentioning the godly qualities we see in her and our appreciation for all her efforts on our behalf. She'll also be encouraged when we express words of affirmation and love that let her know how important she is to us and our family. How else can we show her honor? By figuring out how to take some of the burden from her!

Being a good listener is another way of showing esteem to our wives and mothers. We are to pay attention to the significant women in our lives and that doesn't mean listening with partial focus on the television or interrupting our conversation to take a call. On a regular basis, Mom needs time when family members concentrate exclusively on her and truly hear what she is saying.

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you live out the "one anothers" in a way that truly honors your loved ones.

ENJOYING THE FUTURE--TODAY
Topic: 1 Corinthians 9:24
Many believers are in the midst of a crisis of faith. They desperately yearn to move forward in their Christian walk but instead continually feel as if they are losing ground because of trials and setbacks. How can we move beyond the obstacles and genuinely embrace an active, moving faith?

First, we must understand the importance of assurance. This godly confidence gives us strength to look into the future and see that what the Lord has planned will produce benefit. Assurance calms our fears, reminding us God is in charge and His will shall be accomplished - no matter what challenges we face.

Second, we must live a life of anticipation. In other words, if we truly believe that the heavenly Father will answer our Spirit-led prayers, then we should act as if we believe it! We need to wait expectantly for His answer and plan accordingly.

For example, let's say that you are leaving for a wonderful vacation next week. You would no doubt be making preparations for the trip. You'd start to pack, finalize your travel plans, secure time off from work, and check travel magazines or the Internet for interesting tourist attractions. In your mind, you are already enjoying your vacation - even though you haven't left yet!

Let the same be true in your walk of faith. When you trust that God will faithfully and graciously respond to your petitions, you can rejoice, knowing that He will make a way, even before you see the results. This is the power of assurance and anticipation, and it can revolutionize your walk with Him.

WHAT EVERY MOTHER NEEDS
Topic: Exodus 20:1-12
God tells us to honor our mother, and He does not set any limits to His command. By virtue of her position as our mom, we are to treat her with respect and love.

Mothers don't always live up to our expectations. Sometimes they experience hardships and challenges that affect their ability to offer what we need or want. Or they might have a personal weakness that negatively impacts us and, later on, our families. But we are to follow the example of our heavenly Father, who set His affection on us even though we did not have any qualities that deserved His favor. While we were still His enemies, He chose us to belong to Him through His Son Jesus (Romans 5:10 NIV).

God loved us when we were unlovable. One way we can express our gratitude to Him is by showing unconditional love to our mother. With the Holy Spirit's help, we can choose to do so genuinely and consistently.

To love the significant women in our lives without any strings attached is an important part of showing them honor. No mother or wife should have to wonder if she's living up to what loved ones hope and expect from her. After a while, she will feel trapped by the burden of unmet expectations rather than accepted by those closest to her.

Mothers have the same needs as all women: to be loved, listened to, and cared about. Take time to show the important women in your life how much you care for them. Be a willing, attentive listener, and demonstrate your love in ways meaningful to them.

PROFESSION AND PERFORMANCE
Topic: James 1:22-25
Close your eyes for a minute, and picture your own face. Imagine the slope of your cheek and the color of your eyes. Note any freckles, dimples, or blemishes. Big nose or button nose? Thinning hair or a full mane? Crooked teeth or pearly whites?

Undoubtedly, you know exactly what you look like. Why? It is because we all spend time in front of a mirror, studying our faces and getting to know ourselves. We are not born knowing what we look like, and if we didn't catch our own reflection from time to time, we'd honestly have no idea!

Now think of this in terms of faith. We are not born with knowledge of the saving truth of Jesus Christ. Since we don't inherently know the Word of God, we must read, study, and carefully analyze Scripture so the Holy Spirit can impress His message of salvation and direction on our hearts and minds.

But how many people read the Bible and then walk away, seemingly unaffected? It is as though they forget the power of the Word as soon as they close the book. These are the people who praise Jesus on Sunday, but live Monday-through-Saturday lives of pretense. These are the ones who, as the apostle James describes, forget what they look like.

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says!" (James 1:22 NIV, emphasis added). The world is dying to know what genuine faith looks like. If you profess to know Jesus as Lord, then you carry a solemn responsibility to show others the true face of faith. Let them see Christ . . . reflected in you.

WHY CALL ME "LORD" ?
Topic: Luke 6:46-49
Jesus asked a pointed question to a group of His followers in Luke 6:46. He said, "Why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" Using His illustration of the two builders, we can see four key truths.

First, professing faith in Christ without performance is deceptive. If you say you love Jesus on Sunday, but show no signs of a Spirit-led life all week, then you're living a lie. There's no other way to say it.

Second, profession followed by performance has a price. Some people wander through life without any real focus. They pay attention to the loudest voice or the brightest star. In contrast, living intently and passionately for Christ is usually difficult. Making wise choices may require extra effort, but the reward is well worth it.

The third key truth is this: profession followed by performance will succeed. Everyone on earth faces trials. And sometimes there's one devastating storm after another. But if we focus on God's Word and apply His truth to our circumstances, we'll be able to stand firm in difficult times. Our lives will be supported by the strong foundation of Jesus Christ.

Finally, professing faith in Christ without performance results in ruin. The world's "easy way" may seem more enjoyable, but it results in living without a spiritual base. When trouble comes, our lives would crumble. That's a far cry from the victory and strength our Savior wants us to experience.

Why do you call Jesus "Lord"? Do your actions reflect your faith? Be a wise builder. Construct your house on the strong foundation of Christ, and let your performance match what you profess.
