FATHER: GOD's REPRESENTATIVE
The father is head of the home. The Lord placed him in this position so he'll give the family godly direction and guidance. God calls children to obey their father as they would obey Him. But dad is the one who teaches them how.

When a child questions authority, a possible parental response is, "Because I said so." To the parent, this phrase should end all discussion and whining. After all, mom or dad has made a decision and won't change their mind. But as children grow older, those four simple words position Dad as their ultimate authority. In a child's mind, a rebellious sin is against only his earthly father.

A godly dad understands who the true authority is. In training his children, he transfers a sense of accountability from himself to the Lord. He teaches his kids that he's God's representative in the household. And if they choose to disobey, they'll have to answer to their heavenly Father. This approach helps children recognize their accountability before the Lord. When dad isn't around to give instruction or guidance, they'll still choose to make wise choices because of God's presence.

The greatest protection a father gives his children is to instill a sense of accountability to God. This isn't a one-time lesson. It's a process that lasts throughout the childhood years. During this time, dad should respond to his children's questions and actions with a new phrase. He should say, "Let's see what God says about that."

THE GODLY FATHER
Topic: Colossians 3:18 -21

A serious problem plaguing American families is the absence of godly fathers. A lopsided percentage of today's young people are angry, rebellious, and indifferent. The primary reason is the lack of a strong and loving dad in their lives. Good fathers have a positive relationship with their children. The godly father is conscious of the impact his presence has on his family. And he's considered the consequences of walking away from them.

A father's presence gives his family security. He provides not only physical and emotional support to Mom and the kids, but guidance and leadership as well. Even a father who struggles with these things, or one who feels he's failed somehow, is better for his family than no father at all.

A father is his child's first view of what God is like. If dad's around in everyday life, then it's easier for his children to understand God's daily presence. My father died when I was a baby. I didn't have a sense of security for many years. In my mind, God was distant-far away in heaven. I was already a pastor before I truly realized God's daily presence in my life.

If you're a father, you have a God-given responsibility to remain with your family and help raise your children. This is true, regardless of personal failures, marital difficulties, or any other reason. I challenge you to be the man you should be, a godly father committed to raising godly children.

HOW THE TRUTH CAN SET YOU FREE
Topic: John 8:31-32
You may know when sin has a stranglehold on your life, but it is more difficult to discern subtle traps of inferiority, inadequacy, and insecurity that the enemy may use to enslave you.

Jesus said the truth will make you free. What is the truth? It can be found in His Word.

The truth is related to your position, person, and possessions in Christ. You will be made free when you stop living by perceptions and feelings and start living by fact. For believers, these are the facts:

Position: As a child of God, you have been forgiven your sins because of your acceptance of Christ. God has applied the righteousness of Christ to your account and sent His Spirit to live inside of you. Why should anyone feel inferior when God loved them enough to do all of that?

Person: You have been redeemed and justified because of Christ's work. You are a child of God, the son or daughter of the King of the Universe, a saint on the way to glory. You are worthy, no matter what anyone else says or thinks! God says so!

Possessions: Paul summed it up in Philippians 4:13 when he said, "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me." You should have a great sense of confidence to know that you have the Spirit of the Living God inside of you, equipping you for whatever God requires of you.

RUNNING WITH ENDURANCE
Topic: James 1:2-3
Nobody wakes up on the morning of the Boston Marathon and suddenly decides, Hey, I think I'll run the race today! Long-distance running requires training, a LOT of training. The typical marathon runner spends months preparing for a race. He pulls himself out of bed every day and hits the street. Focusing on his goal, he pushes through physical and mental exhaustion. He watches his diet, gets plenty of sleep, and runs every single day. The goal of all this training is to build endurance. The discipline isn't easy, but it's essential to running a marathon.

The Bible often depicts the Christian life as a race. If this is true, then we can be sure endurance is critical to our success. What builds endurance in our spiritual lives? James 1:2-3 says, "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance."

Endurance is an inner strength that enables us to face any difficulty without quitting. The runner needs endurance to finish the race. So he conditions his body for success, even though it hurts. As believers, we're called to do the exact same thing.

Our "training" comes through trials. As we face different challenges, the Holy Spirit builds us up more and more. This is God's "training camp." If you're facing a hardship today, ask yourself this question: Am I willing to go through this intense workout today in order to win the race tomorrow?

THE ULTIMATE RACE
Topic: Hebrews 12:1-3
Throughout a grueling 26.2-mile marathon, a runner's body goes through changes. He must fight any desire to run too fast early in the race. He must overcome muscle cramps and blisters. He must ignore the whispering voice mid-way through the race that says, "You've already done a great job. Everyone is impressed that you even got this far. Why don't you just quit now?"

With every step, the runner reaffirms his decision to keep going and move closer to the finish line. His eyes are on the goal. He will not be distracted or denied. This is endurance.

To endure doesn't mean to sit back, take it easy, or look for a way out. Endurance also doesn't mean casually accepting a setback and quitting the race early. Instead, it implies "staying power."  This involves the commitment to do whatever it takes to win. It involves pushing through obstacles and overcoming hindrances, one step at a time, as you keep moving. Endurance means you won't quit until you have achieved victory.

We should keep this image in mind as we read the challenge in Hebrews 12:1: "lay aside every encumbrance ... [and] run with endurance the race that is set before us." One who endures says, "Whatever it takes, Lord, I'm going to get there. I will not give up. I will not step off Your path until You've brought me to the finish line."

Do you believe the goals God has given you are worth the effort? Then run toward them with endurance.

A PARENT's POSITIVE INFLUENCE
Topic: Colossians 3:23-25
Yesterday, we focused on the family's influence regarding spiritual matters. Today, let's discuss some vital attitudes also shaped by a parent's example. Relationships, money, and employment usually aren't considered "spiritual issues" because they do not affect our salvation. But the way we approach these three areas of life can still please or displease God.

When it comes to relationships, Mom and Dad usually try to be vigilant so their children won't fall in with the "wrong crowd." At home, kids should see their parents wisely seeking and choosing their own friends. Then, Mom and Dad should treat those people with grace and love.

Regarding money, it's vital for kids to witness a right attitude toward finances. They need to know that everything they earn is actually a gift from God. Then, they'll use those resources well. Wise parents teach children the true value of money-it's a means of providing for oneself and blessing others.

Children need to understand two things about their future career paths. First, God has a plan and will for their life. Second, everything is done for the Lord, regardless of who the human boss is. Mom and Dad should give their best in everything so their children learn to serve God first.

The world frequently measures success according to relationships, money, and career status. We can teach our children true success is NOT about having the most money, the best job, or the best-looking spouse. It's about keeping a God-centered attitude in every situation.

THE FAMILY INFLUENCE
Topic: 1 Kings 15:8 -35
The environment in which a child grows up affects his entire life. The family dynamic, particularly the parents' behavior, impacts his perception of himself, his neighbors, and the Lord. Consider King Asa, a man in the royal line. He followed in David's footsteps and pleased God. Compare his story with that of Nadab, who practiced the same evils as his father King Jeroboam and provoked God's anger.

With those men in mind, we believers must consider what will become of our children if they follow in our ways. We're typically their first example of godly living. This means they should see us praying, reading God's Word, and involved in a community of believers. If we want them to enjoy a relationship with Jesus Christ, they must first see the fruits of our own spiritual walk.

In daily life, our families should see us turning to God for strength and comfort. Whenever a problem or decision confronts us, the kids should hear about the lessons and guidance in Scripture. At church, children need to see Mom and Dad humbly serving the body of Christ. Parent's actions and speech should always indicate to their children that Jesus Christ is the priority.

If your want your son or daughter to desire to please God, then you must first live according to His will. Through you, your child witnesses an example that leads him directly to the ultimate example of successful living with Jesus Christ.

BY FAITH ALONE
Topic: Romans 1:16 -17
If you're too proud to submit to God, you'll never get to heaven. You may be a kind, gentle person; you may even be naturally compassionate and charitable. But if your pride keeps you from admitting you need Jesus Christ, then you'll never accept His gift of salvation. Many people are in hell because their heart was too hard and they believed their mind was too smart for God.

There's only one way to reach heaven. Holy God cannot tolerate sin in His presence. Romans 6:23 says the penalty for sin is death. But, as Romans 3:23 tells us, everyone is a sinner. God mercifully sent His Son Jesus Christ as a sacrifice to provide a bridge between mankind and Himself. This gift is the only thing a person needs to enter into a relationship with God.

The believer doesn't work or reason his way into heaven. The bridge spanning the gap between each individual and God is crossed only through an act of faith. That's achieved by acknowledging the need for a Savior and accepting Christ's death on the cross as payment for sin.

Some people may want only what they deserve. But Romans 3:23 -24 says no one deserves grace. Others may want only what they have worked for. But Ephesians 2:8-9 says nobody can earn salvation. And yet, our heavenly Father wants to give grace and salvation to us, even though we're undeserving. The truly wise people of this world accept God's truth. They bend their spirits-and their knees-before the Lord.

FAITH VERSUS INTELLECT
Topic: 1 Corinthians 1:18 -25
In Paul's time, unbelievers rejected the Gospel of Jesus Christ as foolishness. They tried to approach God purely through intellect. Today, people still offer views of God and salvation that are contrary to Scripture's teachings. Their ideas sometimes sound so reasonable that they lead many astray. According to human logic, the man with the highest education, the largest number of degrees, and the greatest intelligence should have the wisest plan to reach God. But, as the apostle explained, the "wisdom" of mankind is foolishness.

In Isaiah 29:14 and 1 Corinthians 1:19, God promises to destroy the false wisdom of the world. And for good reason-human wisdom is used to glorify man. Those who dismiss faith in favor of an intellect attempt to gain God's approval by reasoning, rationalization, or work. For instance, every religion except Christianity has a plan or ritual by which one supposedly gains acceptance with that belief system's god. Those plans all boil down to this idea: "If I do better, I will be better. If I am better, then I will be more acceptable to my god." In this model, man does the work and earns the glory for being a good member of his religion. But the end result of all that work is death, eternal separation from the true God.

Christianity glorifies God and His work. We're considered faithful believers when we place our trust in Him alone and believe Jesus Christ gave His life so we could be free from sin. Only He has made a way for believers to be acceptable to Him.

UNSHAKABLE PEACE
The Lord has only good plans in store for your life. (Jeremiah 29:11) You may go through difficult times, but God promises to use every trial to build "good" into your life. (Romans 8:28) When Satan tells you to worry, God has the opposite in mind. He wants you to trust Him and to experience His peace on a daily basis. How do we gain and retain the true peace of God?

- Recognize your dependence is on God. The heart that finds its identity in Jesus Christ is a heart of peace. The person who rushes here and there to solve his own problems quickly can become a person of strife and worry. Take responsibility for your actions, but let God have the reins to your life.

- Pray. The enemy cannot defeat you when you are on your spiritual knees before God in prayer. This is the true pathway to unshakable peace.

- Trust God. When thoughts of fear invade your mind, tell the Lord what you are feeling and claim His presence as your protection and shelter. David prayed, "Strengthen my arms so I can bend a bow of bronze." In other words, "Strengthen my faith, Lord, so I won't doubt your goodness."

- Focus only on God. Don't cling to negative thoughts. Set the focus of your heart on God and His possibilities. When God views your life, He sees only potential. You can live life to the fullest because Christ is alive in you and all things are under His feet.

THE HARD-HEARTED BELIEVER
Topic: Hebrews 3:12-19
The believer's path toward a hardened heart starts innocently enough. It's easy to preoccupy ourselves with things that have little or no spiritual value. Once our focus turns away from God, it doesn't take much for the distraction to use up greater amounts of time. We can become so absorbed in the diversion that we ignore spiritual matters.

As our spiritual life suffers, we may give up private devotion and public worship. Anyone who spends time daily with the Lord will have a receptive heart. But the person who lays aside God's Word gives Satan an opportunity. When we function apart from the Lord, our hearts can become deceitful and rebel against Him.

A believer's mind can easily be swayed by the deceitfulness of sin when he has a preoccupied mind and a distant heart. His sensitivity to the Holy Spirit dulls from the hard "shell" forming around his heart. As a result, the drifting Christian begins to find Satan's false promises more tempting. He foolishly trusts in the deception and becomes more involved in sin. This leads to even greater preoccupation with non-spiritual matters. And, sadly, further neglect of his spiritual life.

Believers aren't immune to a hardened heart. We can become as insensitive to God's voice as an unbeliever. But we have a way to remove the spiritual callus forming within us. By repenting and refocusing, we can return to devotion and worship and remain soft-hearted before God.

THE DANGER OF A HARDENING HEART
Topic: Hebrews 3:7-11
The Hebrews who left Egypt had concrete proof of God's existence and commitment to them. Yet they hardened their hearts against the Lord when the time came for them to claim their promised land. Also, they refused to believe God would give them victory over the people of Canaan. The Hebrews rebelled and resisted Joshua and Caleb's appeals by coming up with justifications for their disbelief.

God responded to the Hebrews with harsh discipline. For 40 years, they wandered in the desert until the adults who defied Him were dead. The Lord considered the lesson about their resistance and discipline very important, so He repeated it in the New Testament. He didn't want people to repeat the Israelites' mistake and harden their hearts against Him.

The way to a hardened heart is gradual. It begins with unbelief, that is hearing but not accepting all or part of God's Word. Instead, a person rebels and chooses to live his life without the Lord. He ignores his conscience and justifies unscriptural behavior. Eventually, his heart becomes so hardened that he's no longer affected by the whisper of God's Spirit.

Stubbornly persisting in choosing our own way is dangerous. The Lord not only disciplines those who rebel against Him, but He also withholds opportunities and blessings. If we take seriously God's warning not to rebel against Him, then we must always be obedient. As our heart grows more tender and receptive, we'll find that we're unable to sin without being convicted by the Spirit.

THE REALITY OF GOD's LOVE
Topic: 2 Corinthians 11:23-27
Perhaps you feel some past sin keeps God from loving you. If that's the case, think about Paul, a man who violently persecuted Christians before finally turning to the Lord. Paul says God loves you. Do you believe him?

Maybe you're someone who wonders how a loving God could allow you to be hurt or abused. Paul endured beatings and imprisonment for preaching the Gospel. And he says God loves you. Do you believe him?

It's possible you feel alone and unlovable. Paul was abandoned by friends, and even shipwrecked. He says God loves you. Do you believe him?

Regardless of your experiences, the apostle Paul probably experienced something you can relate to. But he kept spreading his message of hope, which was God loves us and sent His Son to die for our sins.

The situation we find ourselves in may be unfair, painful, or humiliating. But the fact it happened doesn't mean God stopped loving us. Sometimes, we face difficulty because He's polishing our rough edges and molding us into His image. Other challenges are instigated by Satan, but the Lord's permissive will allows them. As Romans 8:28 says, God works everything out to our good, according to His purpose for our life.

The key to accepting the truth of God's unconditional love is to focus attention on Him rather than your circumstances. When you're learning, talking, and sharing your life with Him, trust and faith naturally replace doubt and fear.

OUR INSEPARABLE RELATIONSHIP
Topic: Romans 8:31 - 39
God is love. His nature requires Him to care for Creation unconditionally. This means no matter what a person does, even if he rejects God, the Lord won't stop loving him. After hearing that, many people may think of a dozen reasons why they're an exception. But God loves each of us. The only thing preventing us from experiencing that love is our response. We can either believe our feelings or the truth of Scripture.

In Romans 8:31, Paul points out that God is on the side of the believer. He gave up His Son to death so we could be forgiven and enter into a relationship with the Almighty. Jesus' sacrifice alone is proof of God's love. But there are many additional expressions of His care.

The Lord has a purpose and plan for everyone's life. Romans 8:28 tells us He works every situation, good or bad, to our benefit. He's a loving Father who's interested and actively involved in our daily lives.

Some people read and intellectually believe every word of the Bible. But they still feel unloved because they judge themselves unworthy. Their doubt acts like a dam, keeping the flow of God's care from their hearts. The barrier stays as long as the person believes he or she must deserve God's love.

No sinner deserves pure love. God knows that. Yet, He freely gives His love anyway. The choice of whether or not to accept it is up to us.

THE CHALLENGE OF FORGIVING OURSELVES
Topic: Psalm 32:1-2
Yesterday, we considered why people fail to forgive themselves. Today, let's look at questions to ask yourself when you struggle with self-condemnation.

First, Why should I continue to condemn myself when God no longer condemns me?

Second, Is my self-condemnation drawing me closer to God, or is it driving me farther from Him?

Third, What good am I doing by refusing to forgive myself?

Fourth, Is my self-condemnation helping or hurting my relationships with others?

Fifth, Does my refusal to forgive myself impress God? Does He find me more devout because of my guilt and shame?

Sixth, Is there any biblical basis for not forgiving myself?

Seventh, How long do I intend to condemn myself? What will be the end result?

Normally, the answers to these questions are obvious. But if you're stuck in a self-condemning mindset, the truth may seem hazy.

Often, the only way to work through times of self-doubt and remorse is to focus on God and His will for your life. If you struggle with self-forgiveness, prayerfully consider these seven questions. Read them out loud. Let them work through your spirit. You may even want to open a journal and write down your thoughts as the Lord speaks to you. You'll surely face some intense heart struggles as you consider these points, and as God reorders your thoughts about yourself.

OBSTACLES TO FORGIVING OURSELVES
Topic: Psalm 51:10-12
Every human being has a sin problem. We all lose our tempers, make mistakes, and do things that seem completely out of character. Sin is a universal problem. But God provided forgiveness for everyone who'll accept it. Why do many believers find it impossible to forgive themselves?

First, we struggle with self-forgiveness at times because we find it difficult to accept God's forgiveness. Guilt can be so strong that it may seem to overshadow the enormous gift of pardon and restoration that God freely provides. We may think our past actions are so terrible that God would never forgive us. That's a tragic error.

Second, personal disappointment can prevent us from forgiving ourselves. We often have ridiculously high, self-imposed standards for our behavior and accomplishments. When we fail to achieve them, we're all but crippled by disappointment. This makes self-forgiveness seem impossible.

Third, seeing the results of our sin can block self-forgiveness. If our wrong actions produce tangible negative consequences, we may become so blinded by the result that we can't forgive ourselves. Seeing the outcome of sin every day keeps guilt alive in our minds. As a result, we may simply refuse to let it go.

Are you harboring guilt and remorse for past sin? First John 1:9 says God's forgiveness is available now. Christ gave His life to make you free. Take Galatians 5:1 to heart. Don't willingly stay in chains because you're unwilling to forgive yourself for something God has already forgiven.

HOLDING ON TO OUR HOPE
Topic: 1 Samuel 1:1 -18
Bob was a Christian with a secular job who labored daily beside an atheist. To avoid contention, Bob began witnessing only when the atheist opened the conversation to Bob's beliefs or to God.

But there was an undercurrent in their relationship: Bob's co-worker was always negative. The atheist launched his criticism constantly - about everybody and everything.

Bob held up well against his co - worker's attitude for a while. But over time Bob began compromising. The co - worker had criticized Bob and his beliefs so often that Bob was losing sight of the legitimate hopes and dreams Christ had placed in his heart. Eventually, Bob became increasingly critical. Finally, it was difficult for their fellow workers to see much difference between Bob and the atheist.

Criticism is a hope - stealer. It sometimes comes even from well - meaning believers. Yet we always should keep our focus on God. We should give weight to the opinions of others only rarely - and then only when convinced the person giving counsel is godly and walking closely with Jesus.

Hannah's response to her nagging rival was appropriate and God - honoring. She never lost hope, never gave in to her rival's ways. Instead, she earnestly prayed to her heavenly Father and trusted in His perfect answer and timing.

DANIEL: FORWARD BY FAITH
Topic: Daniel 6
When we read the book of Daniel, it's best to look at the "big picture." The various events and reactions should be interpreted as parts of a single story about Daniel's great trust. By the time he was cast into the lion's den, the prophet had come so far in his faith journey that his situation didn't intimidate him.

The roots of Daniel's unshakable faith began with his parents. They certainly must have shared and interpreted Bible stories to him. Daniel also witnessed the fulfillment of Jeremiah's prophecies about the fall of Jerusalem. From these experiences, Daniel learned how God keeps His promises. He understood that God responded faithfully to those who obeyed, and disciplined those who don't.

When the time came for the young Hebrew to exercise faith, he already knew what he would do. He chose to obey God regardless of the consequences. As Exodus 34:15 tells us, Daniel decided not to eat the king's food. The food violated Scripture because it had been offered to idols. God guided Daniel safely through that difficult experience and many other risky situations. Each time, the prophet determined to obey God and released his doubts. He withstood Satan's challenge. And, ultimately, he gave glory to the Lord.

Daniel consistently moved forward by faith until his commitment to God's way became unshakable. Our faith is no different. It grows as we take one obedient step after another. Then, we witness God's reliability. We'll see how He answers prayer. And we'll increasingly depend on Him until we have a strong personal history of His trustworthiness.

UNSHAKEABLE FAITH
Topic: John 15:1-7
Faith matures in hardship. It's during trials that we as believers clearly recognize our dependence on the Lord. When we allow the roots of our trust to sink deeper into God, He enables us to stand firm through anything. Adversity won't intimidate believers who have unshakable faith. These Christians will remain calm through any trying situation because they're holding fast to their confidence in God.

The key to such rock-solid faith is an intimate relationship with God. In John 15:5, Jesus said, "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing." Once saved, believers have complete access to God. His Spirit lives and works in us and provides a constant connection to Him. All the power of Heaven is available.

But we have a choice whether to tap into that power. If we neglect prayer, avoid reading the Bible, and try to keep certain situations from God's control, then our relationship with Him will be distant. We will limit the Lord's work in our life. But when we commit to know God and obey scriptural principles, His power surges through us. It's like sap flowing through a branch to bring new growth.

Intimately understanding God leads to obedience because the believer knows the power and trustworthiness of the One he serves. Obedience, especially during hard times, develops our faith. As Isaiah 61:3 says, we'll eventually grow into unshakable "oaks of righteousness."

DAVID: FORWARD BY FAITH
Topic: 1 Samuel 17:31-51
Believers can learn a valuable lesson from David's reaction to Goliath's insults and mockery of the Israelites. When the young shepherd first came upon the scene, he was told that whoever defeated the giant would receive rewards from King Saul. This included riches, a wife, and freedom from taxes. Such a generous reward was certainly a great motivator. It obviously piqued his interest. But David's desire to defend God's honor ultimately propelled him onto the battlefield.

David confirmed his true motivation on two separate occasions: once while standing before Saul and again when facing Goliath. In 1 Samuel 17:31-51, he said, "Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has taunted the armies of the living God."

As maturing Christians, we must examine our motives for desiring victory in any battle we face. Sometimes, we may seek a selfish end, such as release from discomfort and a return to an easier way of life. But God intends to mold us into godly believers, regardless of our comfort. Until we also desire a godly makeover, our motivations will be wrong. A person with right motives says, "I don't like my 'Goliath.' But if I have to fight this battle to be the person God wants me to be, then I'm willing."

Before taking action, David wisely examined his motives in order to move forward by faith. Modern believers would do well to learn from his example.
