MOMENTS OF WEAKNESS
Topic: 2 Samuel 11:1- 5

Scripture is filled with descriptions of men and women who sinned in moments of weakness. The first of these true stories is Adam and Eve. First Corinthians 10:11 says these stories are given for our instruction. God wants us to learn from the mistakes of others.

King David's idleness caused his mind to contemplate adultery with Bathsheba. Weariness led Elijah to view death as preferable to life. Genesis 3:6 indicates pride may have played a part in Eve listening to the serpent. Lust may have prompted Solomon to desire many wives, including unbelieving ones. Add to these a sense of spiritual or emotional neediness and emptiness, and we have at least six situations that are fertile ground for temptation. In some biblical examples, temptation was resisted. But in others, the individuals gave in. We can all identify.

The many different types of temptation follow a similar pattern. The eye looks, the mind desires, and the will acts. King David looked at Uriah's wife and inquired about her. Then, he acted. Joshua 7:20-21 tells the story of Achan. He helped in the Jericho conquest and noticed all the material wealth. Then, he coveted it in his mind and took what he wanted.

Regardless of the reason for vulnerability, each person is responsible for his actions. In times of weakness, don't let yourself become too Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. I have turned that warning into the acronym "H.A.L.T." Most importantly, fix your attention on the Lord. Draw strength from Him, and experience victory over temptation.

A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH
Topic: Romans 6:23
Forgiveness is a matter of eternal life or eternal death. How you respond to the free offer of forgiveness by the God of the universe, who sacrificed His Son to afford you eternal life, will determine your eternal destiny. Life or death? Heaven or hell?

No number of good deeds will bring eternal life. That is because, though a person may have a lifetime of avoiding "major" sins, he or she still was born into sin. We have the nature of Adam, whose sin against God left us in a fallen world. Satan doesn't make us sin; we choose to sin and adhere to the sinful nature we inherited.

Sometimes an unbeliever will counter a Christian's witness by saying something like, "I just can't believe a kind and holy God would send anyone to eternal torment."

Immediately, the Christian should agree. God does not send anyone to hell. Instead, Jesus lays down His life, and they must trample over Him to get there. They must walk over the Cross of Christ, the empty tomb, the blood of Jesus, the intercessory prayers of others, the songs and sermons of the Gospel, and the Word of God.

No, an unbeliever must fight his way into hell to get past all of the opportunities God grants him to hear the wonderful truth that brings life over death.

THE PICTURE OF BAPTISM
Topic: Acts 8:26-39
Pictures frequently communicate in ways that words cannot. For example, a photo or painting may bring emotions that words can't describe. In the same way, baptism is a powerful picture of our salvation experience.

When we enter the waters of baptism, we're proclaiming the gospel message. Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and lives again. By proclaiming His message, we're identifying ourselves with Him. Romans 6:4 says we have been buried with Him through baptism into death. We're now dead to the power of sin. Being raised up out of the water expresses our new life in Christ and our union with Him. Our heavenly Father physically raised Jesus from the dead and gave Him life. And He's done the same for us spiritually. Our unbelieving family and friends need to "see" this message in our life.

Baptism is also a public declaration of our faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and in our own future resurrection. After appearing on earth, Jesus ascended into heaven to take His rightful place at His Father's side. Someday we'll receive a resurrection body and live forever with Him.

The image of baptism serves as a reminder of what the Savior has done for us. It points to the truth that there's life beyond the grave. Everlasting existence in the presence of the Lord is waiting for every person who chooses to trust in Christ. Baptism is a commandment, not an option. As such, it's both an obligation and an awesome privilege. Have you publicly identified yourself with Jesus through the act of baptism?

THE IMPORTANCE OF BAPTISM
Topic: Matthew 3:13 -17
Children sometimes identify themselves with superheroes or other characters. For a season, they'll adopt the mannerisms, dress, and speech patterns of their current favorite. As Christians, we're supposed to imitate Jesus.

Our Savior commands us to follow His example in all things, including baptism: Matthew 28:19 says, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit." At the beginning of His public ministry, Jesus chose to be baptized. John the Baptist was calling the Jewish people to confess their sins and demonstrate repentance through immersion in the Jordan River. Sinless Jesus joined the crowd at the river and asked John to baptize Him. The Lord chose to affiliate Himself with sinful man. When we follow His example in the waters of baptism, we're publicly confessing our faith in the Savior and identifying ourselves with Him.

Baptism allows us to demonstrate our connection with Jesus and with our brothers and sisters in Christ. We're all members of one body under the authority of the same Lord. But it's important to remember that Ephesians 2:8-9 says faith in Jesus Christ is the only requirement for salvation, not baptism. But, to fulfill His command, we're to be baptized following our decision to accept Him into our lives.

Luke 11:33 says we should never hide our belief in Jesus. We should express it through our words and actions. Have you matched your confession of faith with baptism?

JESUS, THE PERFECT GOD - MAN
Topic: John 20:30-31
A person's attitude toward Jesus Christ tends to fall into one of three categories. First, some people don't believe He's God. They reject, ignore, or diminish His character and lifesaving work, claiming He was simply a "good" person. Second, others may intellectually acknowledge Jesus is God's Son but have no personal relationship with Him. Third, His true followers believe in their heart that Christ is Savior. As a result of genuine faith, believers become part of His family.

Ephesians 2:1-2 says that before salvation, we're spiritually dead. During this time, we live according to our sin nature. Those who don't have a personal relationship with Jesus remain in that state. But when someone places faith in Him, spiritual birth takes place. Then, he's made alive in Christ and becomes a new creation. The new believer no longer lives according to the "flesh."

Our position in the Lord affects everything about us, including our attitudes, emotions, conversation, and conduct. The culture's ungodliness no longer fits our character. As believers, we're to grow in Christlikeness. We're to embrace ideas, thought patterns, and activities which are pleasing to God, while rejecting all others.

Jesus willingly took our sins upon Himself. He experienced divine wrath in our place. God accepted His death as full payment for our sins. Ephesians 1:20 says the Lord raised Jesus from the dead to a position of divine glory. His Spirit now lives within us. Understand who Jesus Christ is. Let that knowledge strengthen your commitment to be like Him.

JESUS, THE SON OF GOD
Topic: Luke 22:66-71
Jesus called Himself both the Son of Man and the Son of God. The first title emphasized His humanity; the second, His deity. Christ is the only person in history who was both God and man. He left heaven and laid aside His divine glory. Philippians 2:6-7 says He clothed himself with humanity.

Who recognized Christ's divine nature?

The angels knew of His divinity. At Christ's birth, the angel Gabriel told Mary she would bear a child. His name would be the Son of God.

Of course, God the Father knew Jesus' nature. When John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River, the heavenly Father declared, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Later, in Matthew 17:5, God affirmed this same truth and urged men and women to listen to Jesus.

Satan and his demons are aware of Jesus' divinity. The Devil knew Jesus was God's Son and challenged Him to use His supernatural powers to bypass God's plan. In Luke chapter four, demons saw Jesus and shrieked that He was the Son of God.

When the disciples saw Jesus walk on water in the midst of the storm, they worshiped Him and realized He was the Son of God. In Matthew 16:16, Peter declared, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Others knew Jesus' divine nature too. When Christ brought Lazarus back to life, his sister Martha said, "Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world."

The world needs to understand who Jesus is. What will you tell them?

OUR FINANCIAL SECURITY
Topic: 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Sometimes we make the mistake of viewing our resources as coming from our own efforts. But our blessings come from the Lord. If we focus on our bank balance or income, we may wrongly believe that we control our assets. This illusion of safety may be replaced by anxiety if we lose our job or suffer a serious illness.

Fixing our eyes on Jesus will bring genuine peace. True financial security is found in our relationship with the Lord, the owner of all things. It's not found in our bank account or marketable skills. If security is based on our "net worth," we'll rarely feel we have enough money. But once we realize God is in charge of our resources, we'll rest secure because we know He has our best interest in mind.

So why does Scripture address tithing? Tithes to the local church help the work of God's kingdom continue. Another reason is we prove God's faithfulness when we give ten percent of our income. Malachi 3:10-12 says we bring Him honor when others see He's the source of our blessings. When our security rests in our relationship with Christ, we'll be thankful for what we do have and will trust Him for the future.

As the Lord's stewards, Christians are expected to invest their treasure, talents, and time as He directs. God rewards those who handle His money according to biblical guidelines. Those who don't will lose out on blessings.

GIVING GOD HIS RIGHTFUL SHARE
Topic: Malachi 3:7-12
Through the prophet Malachi, God issued a warning to the Israelites about their unacceptable stewardship. They weren't properly handling the resources God entrusted to them. The Lord said to stop robbing Him of the tithe that was due Him. A tithe was ten percent of their income and was given in crops, animals, or with other resources.

Understanding certain biblical principles enables us to handle our earnings in a way that pleases God:

First, as Psalm 50:10 -12 says, the Lord is the owner of all things. He created the heavens and the earth. He made all living creatures, birds that fly in the air, creatures that move in the water, and animals that live on the land. He also created man and woman, who are made in His image. Genesis says everything that has the breath of life belongs to Him.

Second, God appoints His children to be the stewards of what He owns. He gave Adam, Eve, and their descendants the responsibility for taking care of everything He created.

Third, God expects us to be good stewards. In other words, we're to make use of what He has given and return what is due Him. The Lord shouldn't be the last to receive. Give to Him first. That's before paying the bills or spending on personal pleasures.

The Lord will give us material blessings, but He expects us to return to Him a portion of what we've received. The tithe was designated as the starting point in giving. Are you returning to God His rightful share?

CONTROLLING YOUR THOUGHTS

 A thought can be happy, pleasant, sad, or depressing. It also can be tempting, the kind of thought that will cause you to question its origin.
 

As tempting thoughts bear down on us, we may find ourselves surrendering to them and falling into sin. Whether it is for just a moment or for months, tempting thoughts have a way of breaking down our resistance and causing us to rationalize away the action.

Everyone is subject to these tempting thoughts, both Christians and non-Christians. However, as Christians we can prevent these thoughts from lingering in our minds by knowing our position in Christ.

So, what is your position in Christ? If you are a Christian, Christ lives in you, and you are in Him. And if He is in you, then you should honor Him by doing what Paul urges in verse 2: "Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on the earth."

If you continue to think like you did before you came to know the Lord, you will never reach the full potential God has for you in this life. Tempting thoughts will come your way. This is not a sin. But dwelling on these thoughts only breeds sin.

Remember, every action you take begins with a thought in your mind. "For as he thinks within himself, so he is" (Proverbs 23:7).

A PRESENT FATHER
Topic: Proverbs 22:6

Dr. Stanley often thinks about his father. He tries to picture what it would have been like to grow up knowing his dad. When Dr. Stanley was only nine months old, his father died. So he was brought up without an earthly father.

During his youth, Dr. Stanley never really gave it much thought. Then, many years into his ministry, and after he became a father, Dr. Stanley began to feel a cloud hanging over him. There was a mysterious sadness he couldn't identify.

Four close friends helped him discover that, as a child, he had subconsciously dismissed any thought about having a father. Because a dad wasn't around, Dr. Stanley simply deleted the idea from his life. He never realized how this affected his relationship with God.

Because his father was absent, Dr. Stanley had a distorted view of a "heavenly Father." Without realizing it, he created a distance between himself and God. His heart was resistant to an intimate Father-child relationship.

Embracing almighty God as his heavenly Father changed Dr. Stanley's life. He'll never forget the waves of emotion when he felt the tender love of a Father for the first time.

If you're a father, Dr. Stanley prays you'll be a present and active influence in your children's lives. They're looking at you more closely than you can imagine. Their view of God will forever be shaped by the time you spend with them. Show them what He's like. Be a godly dad to your children.

Much of the world is hurting because of the lack of fathers in the home. I am one of these people. The lack of this relationship is more harmful in more ways than many think.  The devil is behind the destruction of the family. He is out to destroy everything God designed. Be aware that he is out to twist and redefine what God designed as "family" - one man, one woman, children.

MAKING A GOOD CONNECTION
Topic: Ephesians 6:1- 4
Far too many children today grow up with no connection to a father. Sometimes, boys are raised with no model of godly manhood. And girls mature without an illustration of how men should treat women. And even when they do have a father around, children can still miss out on vital lessons. Dads, take note of the following three areas that may jeopardize your ability to connect meaningfully with your kids:

First, absence deters your ability to connect with your children. Fathers play a tremendous role in their kids' view of God. If you're never there, working, or preoccupied, then your sons and daughters will see God the same way.

Emotions play an important part in the father-child relationship. Children crave an emotional connection with their fathers. Are you able to make yourself vulnerable and transparent in front of your family? Dads who don't laugh and cry with their kids will raise young men and women who stifle their own emotions. This can bring about emotional disconnection for generations to come.

The thought of a father abusing his child is inconceivable, yet it happens every day. Use discipline when necessary, but be absolutely certain the child understands you're acting out of love. Any man who disciplines a child out of anger demonstrates a horrible picture of a violent, unforgiving God.

Raising a child is a huge honor and privilege. But it's also a serious responsibility. I challenge you to closely look at these three areas. Do your kids know you're there for them? Do they feel your love? Do they find comfort in your hands? Ask God to show His love for your children through you today.

THE SHARED LEGACY OF BELIEVERS
Topic: Psalm 23
Christians sometimes make the mistake of regarding godly men and women of Scripture as being biblical superheroes. But the truth is, they were people just like us. The Lord loves you and me as much as He loved Moses, David, or Gideon.

These biblical saints experienced many difficult and often lonely experiences. David was hunted; Jeremiah was rejected; Paul faced prison and persecution. And yet, each one held tight to the promise that God would be with him (Deuteronomy 31:6, 8 ). That's why David wrote in Psalm 23:4: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me."

The saints of the Bible shared a conviction that they were doing the Lord's work. With this passion and courage, they had a faith that all the forces of evil could never destroy.

We, too, are doing God's work in our world. We may not earn recognition, but we will likely face persecution. When that day comes, we can be sure God will be with us and enable us to fulfill His purpose.

Don't place humble men like Joshua or Joseph on a pedestal. They earned their place in history because they served the Lord faithfully, not as a result of personal achievement. The legacy of these saints is to trust God and have the courage to follow Him, even when obedience is inconvenient or difficult. Your legacy can be the same if you choose to obey the Lord.

COURAGE IN THE LONELY HOUR
Topic: 2 Timothy 4:6-18
From a prison cell, Paul wrote to his spiritual son Timothy. The apostle had been arrested for preaching the gospel. Now, he was alone as he prepared to stand before the Roman tribunal that would decide which charges should be brought. He was a spiritual father to so many. Yet even very close friends had deserted him. He must have felt alone and disappointed.

When someone feels lonely, he's probably experiencing isolation from those he loves. This sense of disconnection is especially troubling when the person is experiencing a difficult situation. But Paul's discouragement was short-lived. In 2 Timothy 4:17, he says, "The Lord stood with me and strengthened me." As believers, we understand the Lord is always with us. But when we face an isolating circumstance, we truly experience His intimacy. God made His presence known to Paul so he no longer felt alone.

A sudden awareness of God wouldn't have surprised Paul. And in fact, he was probably anticipating the Lord. In some of the most trying and lonely times of the apostle's life, God had been there. For example, Paul feared for his life in Corinth and also faced drowning at sea (Acts 18:6-10; 27:22-25). As he recalled God's faithfulness to him in those difficult times, Paul was confident the Lord would surely be with him again.

We can depend upon the same promise as Paul. Hebrews 13:5 says, "I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you." The Lord is always with us. He will make His presence known in our lonely hours so we can have courage for whatever lies ahead.

FATHER: GOD's REPRESENTATIVE
The father is head of the home. The Lord placed him in this position so he'll give the family godly direction and guidance. God calls children to obey their father as they would obey Him. But dad is the one who teaches them how.

When a child questions authority, a possible parental response is, "Because I said so." To the parent, this phrase should end all discussion and whining. After all, mom or dad has made a decision and won't change their mind. But as children grow older, those four simple words position Dad as their ultimate authority. In a child's mind, a rebellious sin is against only his earthly father.

A godly dad understands who the true authority is. In training his children, he transfers a sense of accountability from himself to the Lord. He teaches his kids that he's God's representative in the household. And if they choose to disobey, they'll have to answer to their heavenly Father. This approach helps children recognize their accountability before the Lord. When dad isn't around to give instruction or guidance, they'll still choose to make wise choices because of God's presence.

The greatest protection a father gives his children is to instill a sense of accountability to God. This isn't a one-time lesson. It's a process that lasts throughout the childhood years. During this time, dad should respond to his children's questions and actions with a new phrase. He should say, "Let's see what God says about that."

THE GODLY FATHER
Topic: Colossians 3:18 -21

A serious problem plaguing American families is the absence of godly fathers. A lopsided percentage of today's young people are angry, rebellious, and indifferent. The primary reason is the lack of a strong and loving dad in their lives. Good fathers have a positive relationship with their children. The godly father is conscious of the impact his presence has on his family. And he's considered the consequences of walking away from them.

A father's presence gives his family security. He provides not only physical and emotional support to Mom and the kids, but guidance and leadership as well. Even a father who struggles with these things, or one who feels he's failed somehow, is better for his family than no father at all.

A father is his child's first view of what God is like. If dad's around in everyday life, then it's easier for his children to understand God's daily presence. My father died when I was a baby. I didn't have a sense of security for many years. In my mind, God was distant-far away in heaven. I was already a pastor before I truly realized God's daily presence in my life.

If you're a father, you have a God-given responsibility to remain with your family and help raise your children. This is true, regardless of personal failures, marital difficulties, or any other reason. I challenge you to be the man you should be, a godly father committed to raising godly children.

HOW THE TRUTH CAN SET YOU FREE
Topic: John 8:31-32
You may know when sin has a stranglehold on your life, but it is more difficult to discern subtle traps of inferiority, inadequacy, and insecurity that the enemy may use to enslave you.

Jesus said the truth will make you free. What is the truth? It can be found in His Word.

The truth is related to your position, person, and possessions in Christ. You will be made free when you stop living by perceptions and feelings and start living by fact. For believers, these are the facts:

Position: As a child of God, you have been forgiven your sins because of your acceptance of Christ. God has applied the righteousness of Christ to your account and sent His Spirit to live inside of you. Why should anyone feel inferior when God loved them enough to do all of that?

Person: You have been redeemed and justified because of Christ's work. You are a child of God, the son or daughter of the King of the Universe, a saint on the way to glory. You are worthy, no matter what anyone else says or thinks! God says so!

Possessions: Paul summed it up in Philippians 4:13 when he said, "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me." You should have a great sense of confidence to know that you have the Spirit of the Living God inside of you, equipping you for whatever God requires of you.

RUNNING WITH ENDURANCE
Topic: James 1:2-3
Nobody wakes up on the morning of the Boston Marathon and suddenly decides, Hey, I think I'll run the race today! Long-distance running requires training, a LOT of training. The typical marathon runner spends months preparing for a race. He pulls himself out of bed every day and hits the street. Focusing on his goal, he pushes through physical and mental exhaustion. He watches his diet, gets plenty of sleep, and runs every single day. The goal of all this training is to build endurance. The discipline isn't easy, but it's essential to running a marathon.

The Bible often depicts the Christian life as a race. If this is true, then we can be sure endurance is critical to our success. What builds endurance in our spiritual lives? James 1:2-3 says, "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance."

Endurance is an inner strength that enables us to face any difficulty without quitting. The runner needs endurance to finish the race. So he conditions his body for success, even though it hurts. As believers, we're called to do the exact same thing.

Our "training" comes through trials. As we face different challenges, the Holy Spirit builds us up more and more. This is God's "training camp." If you're facing a hardship today, ask yourself this question: Am I willing to go through this intense workout today in order to win the race tomorrow?

THE ULTIMATE RACE
Topic: Hebrews 12:1-3
Throughout a grueling 26.2-mile marathon, a runner's body goes through changes. He must fight any desire to run too fast early in the race. He must overcome muscle cramps and blisters. He must ignore the whispering voice mid-way through the race that says, "You've already done a great job. Everyone is impressed that you even got this far. Why don't you just quit now?"

With every step, the runner reaffirms his decision to keep going and move closer to the finish line. His eyes are on the goal. He will not be distracted or denied. This is endurance.

To endure doesn't mean to sit back, take it easy, or look for a way out. Endurance also doesn't mean casually accepting a setback and quitting the race early. Instead, it implies "staying power."  This involves the commitment to do whatever it takes to win. It involves pushing through obstacles and overcoming hindrances, one step at a time, as you keep moving. Endurance means you won't quit until you have achieved victory.

We should keep this image in mind as we read the challenge in Hebrews 12:1: "lay aside every encumbrance ... [and] run with endurance the race that is set before us." One who endures says, "Whatever it takes, Lord, I'm going to get there. I will not give up. I will not step off Your path until You've brought me to the finish line."

Do you believe the goals God has given you are worth the effort? Then run toward them with endurance.

A PARENT's POSITIVE INFLUENCE
Topic: Colossians 3:23-25
Yesterday, we focused on the family's influence regarding spiritual matters. Today, let's discuss some vital attitudes also shaped by a parent's example. Relationships, money, and employment usually aren't considered "spiritual issues" because they do not affect our salvation. But the way we approach these three areas of life can still please or displease God.

When it comes to relationships, Mom and Dad usually try to be vigilant so their children won't fall in with the "wrong crowd." At home, kids should see their parents wisely seeking and choosing their own friends. Then, Mom and Dad should treat those people with grace and love.

Regarding money, it's vital for kids to witness a right attitude toward finances. They need to know that everything they earn is actually a gift from God. Then, they'll use those resources well. Wise parents teach children the true value of money-it's a means of providing for oneself and blessing others.

Children need to understand two things about their future career paths. First, God has a plan and will for their life. Second, everything is done for the Lord, regardless of who the human boss is. Mom and Dad should give their best in everything so their children learn to serve God first.

The world frequently measures success according to relationships, money, and career status. We can teach our children true success is NOT about having the most money, the best job, or the best-looking spouse. It's about keeping a God-centered attitude in every situation.

THE FAMILY INFLUENCE
Topic: 1 Kings 15:8 -35
The environment in which a child grows up affects his entire life. The family dynamic, particularly the parents' behavior, impacts his perception of himself, his neighbors, and the Lord. Consider King Asa, a man in the royal line. He followed in David's footsteps and pleased God. Compare his story with that of Nadab, who practiced the same evils as his father King Jeroboam and provoked God's anger.

With those men in mind, we believers must consider what will become of our children if they follow in our ways. We're typically their first example of godly living. This means they should see us praying, reading God's Word, and involved in a community of believers. If we want them to enjoy a relationship with Jesus Christ, they must first see the fruits of our own spiritual walk.

In daily life, our families should see us turning to God for strength and comfort. Whenever a problem or decision confronts us, the kids should hear about the lessons and guidance in Scripture. At church, children need to see Mom and Dad humbly serving the body of Christ. Parent's actions and speech should always indicate to their children that Jesus Christ is the priority.

If your want your son or daughter to desire to please God, then you must first live according to His will. Through you, your child witnesses an example that leads him directly to the ultimate example of successful living with Jesus Christ.
