CHOOSING TO FORGIVE
Young children generally don't hold grudges. They'll react to an unpleasant situation, and then let it go. But adults have a tendency to hang on to past hurts. When people act badly toward us, we think they owe a debt for their wrong doing. We believe they're obligated to us because of their poor behavior. And it seems only fair to expect some kind of restitution. Unless that occurs, we refuse to forgive.

As Christians, we're called to a different way of thinking and acting. One that's consistent with God's character. He's a merciful Father who wants His children to show mercy to others. His Son's life on earth demonstrated how we're to live. As Jesus hung on the cross, He prayed, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." God expects us to forgive as Jesus did, regardless of circumstances.

In our humanity, we find this command difficult to carry out. That is, until we start to grasp the extent of Christ's work on our behalf. The cross made us recipients of a mercy so great it defies the imagination. The Savior took all of our sin upon Himself and died in our place. He experienced the outpouring of God's wrath so our heavenly Father would forgive us. We deserved condemnation but received God's mercy instead.

The Holy Spirit enables us to let go of past wrongs and extend mercy to others, just as Christ gave mercy to us. What choice will you make today?

THE GRACE OF GOD
Topic: Romans 5:1-2
Grace is far more than a mealtime prayer or a popular name for girls. The word communicates the idea of blessing. As children of God, we're the recipients of His abundant grace. Let's examine how we experience this amazing benefit of His love.

We see God's favor in our salvation. Ephesians 2:8 tells us, "For by grace you have been saved." The blessing is undeserved and unearned. Nothing about your or me prompts God to save us. He acts purely out of His goodness. He sacrificed Jesus so we could be reconciled to Him and adopted into His family.

Grace is also the sphere in which we live the Christian life. Colossians 1:12-13 points out that salvation transferred us from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. Here, we live out our new identity as God's child and glorify Him.

The beauty of grace becomes clear when we consider our former condition, hostile to the Lord and alienated from Him. Ephesians 2:1 says we were spiritually dead and lived according to our selfish interests. Now, through faith in Jesus, God has justified us and given us new life. According to Romans 8:1, He's declared we have right standing before Him. All of our sins were placed upon Jesus, and His righteousness has been credited to our account permanently.

Picture yourself living in the favor of God. Accept this truth, and then give the Lord thanks.

THE WEIGHT OF GUILT
Topic: John 3:16-17
False guilt can be an intolerable weight for the believer to bear. The nagging sense of shame may cause us to doubt the Lord's love and goodness. We might even start to wonder if our salvation is real. Thankfully, we can find relief.

First of all, it's helpful to identify the root cause of our guilt. For example, it might involve legalism or criticism. Next, we must affirm three truths:

One, remember we are special. Any reason we give to "prove" otherwise is a lie from Satan. Each of us is a one-of-a-kind creation. Ephesians 2:10 says the Lord created us and blessed us with specific talents and abilities meant to be used for His glory.

Two, remember we are loved. God sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins so we could live with Him eternally. We don't have to do anything to earn His love. It's already ours for the receiving. We simply must believe He died in our place, was buried, and rose again.

And the third truth is to remember we are forgiven. If we confess our sins, He forgives. First John 1:9 promises us the process is that simple.

The Enemy stimulates false guilt. Our final step must be to renounce his lies. We must make a declaration to this effect: "In the name of Jesus Christ, I reject these feelings of guilt. They have absolutely no scriptural basis. They are false, and I refuse to acknowledge them." As a result, the heavy weight of guilt will lift from our hearts.

The Erosion Of Our Lives
Topic: John 2:1-2

Rationalization of sin is a most dangerous error and is one of the ways Satan turns a man’s pride into a weapon against himself. Rationalizing sin leads to the erosion of life.

One of the most prevalent and poisonous rationalizations of sin is that, “This isn’t hurting anyone. If it is hurting anyone, it’s only hurting me, so why should I worry about it?” Another popular misconception is, “I can handle this. If I sense that I’m losing control, I’ll just quit. I won’t let it get out of control.”

The problem with such thinking is that in sin’s erosive power, the heart of a person is dulled ever more by repeated sin. There doesn’t come a time, before it’s too late, that a person can stop himself or herself when they “sense” their lives beginning to spiral out of control. The enemy is too crafty for that. Instead, he keeps you preoccupied with the supposed “benefits” of your conduct until your heart is callused. A callused heart cannot sense the pain and increasing danger of the sin barraging it. Therefore, a person often lingers in sin or unwittingly increases the sin in frequency or severity.

There is a sobering old saying: Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a lifestyle; sow a lifestyle, reap a destiny.

THE STRUGGLE WITH TEMPTATION
Topic: 1 Corinthians 10:13
No matter what form temptation takes in our life, Satan uses a fairly standard process to get us off track. And it's as effective as ever.

First, we begin to think about the object of our desire. We play with it in our minds. We imagine how we would feel if it were ours. Even though God may shower countless blessings on us, it's interesting that we always seem to focus on the one thing we don't have. It's important to ask the question: Could the Enemy be trying to redirect my focus?

Remember, Satan wants to alienate us from God. He wants us to take our eyes off the Lord. Then, he can lead us to temptation by causing us to focus on our selfish interests.

Second, the tempting thought builds until it finally gives way to full-blown desire. This intense longing is the result of our unchecked imagination. We're no longer content simply to enjoy the object in our mind. Now, we must actually have it.

The third way Satan gets us off track is when the desire leads to a choice. Here is where we make the decision to give in to the sin or lay it down.

Through the Holy Spirit, we have the ability and the power to walk away from temptation. We're never helpless to escape the situation, no matter how much momentum has built.

Do you feel powerless to stop a growing temptation? Stand firm against Satan's tactics by understanding the nature of this gradual process.

WHAT IS TEMPTATION?
Topic: Matthew 26:41
Everybody experiences temptation. It doesn't matter how "spiritual" you are or how long you've followed Christ. Sometimes, it seems like a faint whisper. Other times, it's an unbearable shout in your mind. Regardless of how it sounds, you know what it's like to be tempted. But if someone asked, could you define it?

Temptation is simply an enticement to take a God-given desire beyond God-given boundaries. Many people reject this idea. They refuse to believe their temptation could be even remotely related to God. But think about it: in what ways are you most often tempted? Material possessions? Intimacy? Relationships? Food? These are all things that God not only created, but also uses to bless His people. The problem comes when we take those drives beyond the healthy limits God set.

For example, He created sex for enjoyment within marriage. But this divinely approved desire is horribly corrupted by physical intimacy outside of marriage. In those cases, something the Creator designed for His purposes becomes a source of guilt and shame. That's not what God intended.

One of Satan's top strategies is to distort a God-given drive for his own evil purposes. You can short-circuit such an attack by reminding yourself of the origins of this drive and praying for the strength to use those drives for God's glory.

ASSURANCE OF OUR SALVATION
Topic: 1 John 5:10-13
The salvation God provided at the Cross leaves no room for uncertainty. If you've received Jesus as your personal Savior, then the Father wants you to be 100-percent certain you're saved. There's a three-fold test you can apply to your understanding of salvation.

First, ask, "What does the Word of God say?" The Bible's teaching about salvation leaves no room for doubt. Acts 16:31 says it well: "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved." That's it. It doesn't tell us to believe, plus something else. It just says, "believe."

Second, ask, "What is the witness of the Spirit?" Romans 8:16 says, "The Spirit Himself testifies that we are children of God." When we receive Jesus as Lord, the Father gives us His Holy Spirit. This ever-present Spirit inside enables us to relate to and communicate with God. Because of the Holy Spirit, we can continually testify that we're saved. Then, we'll be confident even if our feelings about salvation ebb and flow.

The third question you can ask to better understand salvation is, "What's the desire of my heart?" When the Spirit begins to reside within us, we'll experience powerful changes. We'll develop a desire for intimacy with the Lord and become sensitive to His will. This doesn't mean we'll never sin. But it does demonstrate our born-again spirit reaching for God.

You can know that you're saved. If you've made the commitment to trust Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then rejoice today as a child of God.

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT
Topic: Romans 8:3-15
In Galatians 5:16, Paul wrote, "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh." This is a simple formula for a righteous lifestyle. We have a choice. We can live according to our fleshly desires for comfort and pleasure. Or we can trust the Holy Spirit to enable us to fearlessly serve the Lord.

Resisting the tug of the flesh isn't easy. Even the disciples, who spent three years learning directly from Jesus, couldn't expect to achieve righteousness in their own strength. In Acts 1:4, the Lord instructed the disciples to wait in Jerusalem until the power of the Holy Spirit came upon them. Modern followers can put no more confidence in their flesh than did 11 of Jesus' close friends.

In order to walk by the Holy Spirit, we must accept the truth that it's impossible to live the Christian life alone. If we depend upon our experiences and strength, we'll fail. God's Spirit works in and through us. That's why submitting our will to His power and guidance is critical. And surrender isn't a one-time deal; believers have to yield repeatedly. Every time a decision must be made, we should look to the Spirit for guidance.

Righteous living simply isn't natural for human beings. We require help. Our Father has graciously given us a Helper so we can live in a godly manner. When we choose to yield to His direction, joy and peace will follow. May God grant you the wisdom to make the right decision.

THE STRUGGLE OF THE FLESH

When the New Testament refers to flesh, it’s usually not talking about human skin. The flesh is the human side of us that wants to indulge in our selfish desires. It’s a pattern of thinking and conduct that opposes God.

Someone who acts on their natural impulses is living in the flesh. Our natural impulses are geared toward personal comfort and pleasure, not toward pleasing the Lord. That means we’ll do whatever is necessary to satisfy our body and mind. People go to great lengths to fill the emptiness. They participate in acts of sexual immorality, idolatry and some of the other things listed in today’s passage. But nothing can truly satisfy the flesh. It always selfishly wants more.

Unbelievers who act out of self-interest don’t have the Holy Spirit to guide them. There’s no Helper inside to sound the alarm when they’re wrong or to enable better conduct. But the Christian has no such excuse. God’s Spirit dwells within and prompts appropriate behavior and thoughts. But the tug of the flesh remains because we do not shed our humanity until we reach heaven. So, believers still have the capacity to give in to sin and corruption.

To protect ourselves from fleshly desires, we must place our complete trust in the Holy Spirit. Only He can point out wrong actions, thoughts, and attitudes. What’s more, He fills us with the desire to obey and enables us to make right choices.

FELLOWSHIP WITH JESUS
Topic: Luke 10:40-42
It never stops--the vicious cycle of doing things. Running errands, cleaning the house, picking up the kids, putting in extra time on your project at work, studying for another big test. You just keep going and going with no end in sight.

It can even become a pattern in your church life. Helping with prayer meeting, keeping the nursery, teaching Sunday school, visiting the shut-ins, calling last week's visitors. It goes on and on and on until you're spending all this time working for the Lord but you're not spending time on what He desires from you most: your fellowship.

John wanted to share the good news of Christ so others would come to know Him and fellowship with Him. (I John 1:3, 6) He knew what the most needful thing in his life was.

We need to remember that as well. Mary knew it was better to sit at the feet of Jesus, loving Him and sharing with Him, rather than preparing a five-course dinner like Martha.

To know Him more intimately, we must spend time with Him. Out of this closer relationship, our love for Him grows and we desire to serve Him more.

When Jesus becomes our sole focus, nothing can shake us. If we make fellowship with Him a priority, He will make Himself known to us like we've never known Him before.

ENCOURAGING THE PASTOR
Topic: 2 Timothy 1:1-6
Do you attend church? If so, God has placed a person in your life who wants to train you in righteousness and speak the truth. He does this even when you don't want to hear it. You're blessed to have a pastor who loves you and cares about your spiritual well -being. He needs to know you care about him, too.

Many churchgoers neglect to encourage the pastor. But caring for him is part of being in the body of Christ. In his second letter to Timothy, the apostle Paul models the way we're to encourage those who minister:

First, tell your pastor you appreciate him. There's nothing more uplifting to a person's heart than to know someone else cares. Words are certainly valuable. But actions speak even louder. So look for ways to demonstrate love for your preacher.

Second, express confidence in the pastor. Let him know you recognize the sincerity of his faith and appreciate his commitment to speak scriptural truths.

Third, affirm the call of God on his life. Work with your pastor. Respond to him in a way that shows you understand he's been called to minister and has God's hand upon him. And when you experience the Lord working through him, let him know.

Above all, pray for your pastor. Don't assume that others in the church are praying or that a spiritual leader doesn't need prayer. The opposite is true. The Devil wants to prevent effective ministering. You can help defend the minister who loves you.

REKINDLING THE FLAME
Topic: 1 Timothy 4:14-16

Sadly, a believer's passion to serve the Lord and share the gospel sometimes fades. When this happens, some choose to settle for a lukewarm life. They neither risk much for His name nor receive many blessings. Others stop ministering altogether and drift aimlessly through life. But the wise choice is to rekindle the flame of passion that first lit when we received salvation.

When we were saved, we received the gift of the Holy Spirit, our Helper in ministry. But wrong choices and poor priorities can hinder His power in our life. If that happens, how can we renew our passion for God?

The first step is to pray for the Holy Spirit to fill - or control - us again. That requires self - examination and repentance of any sins the Lord brings to mind. It also means giving back to God the right to reign over our life. Next, think about what was and what wasn't happening in life when our passion last burned brightly. Understanding how external pressures and activities affect our ministry helps us prioritize wisely.

A smart last step is to retreat and devote a day or more to refocus on the Lord. This is a good time to recall His words of encouragement from Isaiah 41:10. In that way, we can resist fixating on problems. Instead, it's important to remember that He'll shepherd us through any trial. The more we focus on God, the smaller our distractions and stress will seem.

We don't need to settle for a lukewarm life. The passion we experienced at salvation can be ours again if we'll fix our focus on the Lord.

THE RESULTS OF YIELDING TO CULTURE
Topic: 1 Corinthians 3:1-3
Believers fit into one of two general categories. First, there are committed followers of Jesus Christ. These believers are focused on pleasing God and growing in their faith. The other type of Christian isn't concerned with spiritual matters. Instead, they remain focused on worldly things. Such people are heavily influenced by their culture and often compromise their convictions.

When a believer loosens his grip on God's Word, he begins the decline into his earthly desires. Perhaps he disobeys a command or refuses to believe a certain truth. Or he may simply stop reading Scripture. Sooner or later, something in the culture grabs his attention. This fixation slowly influences him and consumes his time and resources. His "new love" gradually wins his affection away from the Lord.

After a while, other aspects of culture that once appeared undesirable begin to look appealing. The believer may dabble in such things at first and eventually indulge with abandon. Eventually, his witness is ruined because neither his conduct nor his character are consistent with a follower of Jesus. The culture's influence has rendered him useless for the kingdom of God.

Have you yielded to the world's mindset? You don't need to waste your life in pursuit of things that can't bring lasting peace. Repent and return to the God who saved you. Peace and fulfillment are the reward of those whose sole focus is to please the Lord.

SURVIVING IN OUR PRESENT CULTURE
Topic: Titus 1
Every day we're influenced by our culture. Society's prevailing philosophies and attitudes are everywhere- on radio and TV, in books and magazines, and even in conversations at the workplace and corner coffee shop. It's difficult for believers to avoid the pressure to be and think like everyone else. But the Bible calls us to live in our culture without becoming part of it.

In his letter to Titus, Paul explained how we're to accomplish this. Titus 1:9 says those who won't participate in the sins of the culture must hold "fast the faithful word." To survive the pull of our present culture, we must cling to God's Word and apply His principles. The Bible is the revelation of God. He tells us what He thinks, how He acts, and what He expects of us. Reading and obeying the Bible ensures that believers will live righteously, identify error, and avoid sin.

The Bible can't do any of these things if we never open it. Obeying God's Word is a practical matter. We're to read Scripture carefully and meditate upon it daily. In other words, we must think about the meaning of passages and apply their lessons to our daily life. To apply scriptural truths, we must not only believe the Word wholeheartedly but also obey it consistently. When we take practical steps to keep Scripture as the anchor of our belief system, we will not be swayed by culture.

THE HOLY SPIRIT PROMISED
Topic: Romans 15:15-21

"But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power to testify about Me with great effect, to the people in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth, about my death and resurrection" (Acts 1:8).

Evangelists were gathered in Amsterdam, Holland, from more than 130 countries around the world to attend the International Conference for Itinerant Evangelists sponsored by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. On the third night of this historic event I was asked to bring the address on "How to be Filled With the Holy Spirit." Just before I was to speak, a note from Billy Graham was handed to me. It said, "I consider this one of the most important addresses of the entire conference."

According to the hundreds of thousands of surveys which our ministry has taken all over the world, 95 percent of the professing believers do not understand the ministry of the Holy Spirit. This includes a majority of pastors, evangelists and missionaries. In fact, if I had only one message to give to the Christian world, it would be how to be filled with the Holy Spirit and how to walk moment by moment in the fullness of His power. Indeed if I had to choose between introducing a non-believer to Christ or helping a defeated, fruitless, impotent Christian to understand the ministry of the Holy Spirit and share his faith in Christ with others, I would choose the latter because inevitably the end result would be far greater in terms of the number of people who would be introduced to Christ. The one great need of the Body of Christ today that transcends all other needs is to be awakened to the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit, to be empowered and controlled by Him, to allow Him to exalt and honor our Lord Jesus Christ in and through us, for that is the purpose of His coming. "He (the Holy Spirit) shall praise Me and bring Me great honor by showing you My glory" (John 16:14).

On hundreds of occasions throughout the world I have spoken on this subject and always, when the invitation is given, a good percentage indicate their desire to be filled with the Spirit. The Scripture promises, "Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled." Do you hunger and thirst after righteousness? If so, you are a candidate for the fullness of God's Spirit. You can by faith appropriate His fullness right now by claiming His promise that God will release His power through you in order that you may be an effective witness for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Today I will claim by faith the fullness of God's Spirit in order to live the supernatural life and to be a more fruitful witness for the Lord Jesus Christ. I know that it is the Holy Spirit who will enable me to live that exciting, supernatural life.

GOD's BLESSINGS UPON AMERICA
Topic: Psalm 33:12
God has certainly blessed the United States. He's extended His hand of provision across this great nation. Yet, how often do we fail to thank Him?

As most Americans prepare to celebrate our independence next week, it's fitting to take a moment and offer thanks to God. He's provided so abundantly for us. Think about how God has blessed us in the following areas:

First, our godly heritage. History shows that many of the men who signed our Constitution were Christians. This country was founded on biblical principles and a Christ-centered interpretation of justice, fairness, and equal opportunity.

Second, He's blessed us with natural resources. Just think about the blessings God's placed at our feet: ore, minerals, oil, forests, lakes, pastures, farmlands, and more. He's provided what we need for ourselves and enough to care for other countries around the world.

Third, we should appreciate our economy. The free enterprise we enjoy in America is a remarkable blessing. We excel in innovations because we're at liberty to follow our passions.

Finally, God has placed us in a free country. You should thank God for the election process and the freedom to personally impact the direction of this nation. It's an amazing blessing that's completely foreign in many parts of the world.

This weekend, slow down a bit and look around. Try to intentionally notice the Lord's blessings in your life. What do you need to thank Him for?

THOUGHTLESSLY CRUEL

"Remind the people to be...peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men" (Titus 3:1, 2).

A couple of years ago, my wife planted blueberries beside our house, about seventy feet away from the nearest faucet. We had a cheap hose at the time that kept splitting as I hauled it across the lawn to water the blueberries. I had to cut the hose and reset a new nozzle every time it split, so I finally got fed up and went to the hardware store and got a "heavy-duty, industrial strength" hose, guaranteed not to split.

I felt so happy with my purchase -- finally a decent hose! It made me smile, just looking at it. I'd pick it up, feel its weight, and say to myself, "No way this baby is ever gonna split."

Imagine my chagrin when Lisa barged into the house one evening and exclaimed, "I hate that stupid hose!"

My superindustrial-strength beauty proved far too heavy for my poor wife. When she tried to lug it across the front yard and the driveway to reach the side of our house, it felt like she was trying to pull a stubborn mule. I bought that hose thinking of me; I never even considered whether Lisa would be able to lift it.

Although some might consider this a simple inconsiderate act, at a deeper level it revealed my prideful self-centeredness. I didn't mean to act intentionally cruel, but I did act thoughtlessly cruel. I simply didn't pay attention to what was best for Lisa. Worse, I hadn't even thought about Lisa when I made the purchase. I had grown tired of repairing the hose, so I determined to make my own life better -- as it turned out, at her expense. (We ultimately found a coiled hose that weighed much less but still stretched the necessary distance.)

Spiritual humility -- what the ancients called "the queen of the virtues" invites us to become more thoughtful, more aware, and more sensitive to others. In our arrogance, we can get so wrapped up in our own world that we can't see anyone else.

Humility is often built on the little things in life, and marriage is 90 percent small stuff. These small occurrences are, as writer Andrew Murray puts it, "the tests of eternity" because they reveal what's in our hearts. We don't build humility on giant gestures as much as forge it with consistent, thoughtful actions, day after day.

This "queen of the virtues" so often gets misunderstood. We don't find humility by demeaning ourselves or criticizing ourselves or denying that God has given us obvious gifts and talents. Vertically, we find biblical humility by pointing others to the one true hero of Scripture, namely, God himself: "He must become greater; I must become less" (John 3:30). Horizontally, we find it by thinking less about ourselves and more about others (Philippians 2:4). We embrace humility when we refuse to get so wrapped up in our own worlds that we can examine what we are doing and saying in light of how our actions affect those around us. We find it when we stop pretending we are at the center of the universe, and instead adopt Jesus' attitude of becoming a servant of all (Mark 9:35) -- which requires us to start actively thinking about others.

What better arena to learn this than in marriage? What relationship seems designed to confront our self-preoccupation more than living with a spouse?

Learn the joy of consideration. Free yourself from the constraints of being focused on yourself. Allow God to use your marriage to teach you to think of others.

In what areas of your marriage are you being thoughtlessly cruel? Where are you not even considering how your actions (or inactions) are making life difficult for your spouse?

THE WAY TO VICTORY OVER WEAKNESS
Topic: Judges 16:1-22
Good parents attempt to provide their children every advantage to become successful adults. As Christians, we especially want to help our children mature in their knowledge of God and the Bible, their love for Jesus, their appreciation of the church family, and the desire to serve the Lord. Children frequently have great enthusiasm for the things of God. But as they grow older, they may fall away.

Samson is an example of unfortunate drifting. He had a godly upbringing. But at some point, the world's sexual temptations became very attractive to him.

Scripture reveals several occasions where Samson gave in to his lust. For instance, he desired a pagan woman from Timnah, despite his parents' warning. In Judges 14:1-3, he broke God's command by marrying her. A second incident nearly led to his murder. But he survived only because of his supernatural strength. Perhaps the most tragic and notorious example was Delilah's betrayal of Samson. Lust prevented him from seeing her true nature. As a result, the Philistines captured and blinded Samson.

Left unchecked, sin penetrates and dominates our lives. It will affect others with its consequences. The first step toward success is awareness of our weaknesses. Then, we must admit we are helpless to overcome them alone. Finally, it's important to acknowledge that God is able to rescue us. With this perspective, we'll be able to obey His commands and gain victory.

THE CONSEQUENCES OF INDULGING WEAKNESSES
Topic: Judges 13:24-25
At salvation, believers become new creations set apart for God's purposes. The Lord has a specific plan for the life of every believer. And Second Peter 1: 3 says He provides every believer the resources to accomplish his purposes.

Consider Samson. At the time of his birth, Israel was under Philistine rule. Judges 21:25 says people in that wicked culture "did what was right in [their] own eyes." God ordained Samson be set apart for His service. As Judges 13:5 says, Samson was the one who would "begin to deliver Israel from the hands of the Philistines." To prepare Samson for this mission, the Lord gave him godly parents. God blessed him with an upbringing uncontaminated by the culture. The Lord also gifted him with incredible human strength. Samson was greatly blessed as he matured. He became Judge over Israel, with the authority to carry out God's will.

God equipped Samson with everything he needed to fulfill the Lord's purpose. But Samson had a weakness? lust. He chose to indulge his desire, and it eventually led to his downfall. As a result, he ended up a prisoner, no longer in a position to fulfill his God - given purpose.

The Lord equips us with the ability to resist giving in to our weaknesses. But we must be willing to turn away from temptation and follow the Lord. Samson had enormous potential to demonstrate righteousness on behalf of God. So do we. But he chose sin and suffered the consequences. Will you turn to God for help today or indulge in your weakness?

MOMENTS OF WEAKNESS
Topic: 2 Samuel 11:1- 5

Scripture is filled with descriptions of men and women who sinned in moments of weakness. The first of these true stories is Adam and Eve. First Corinthians 10:11 says these stories are given for our instruction. God wants us to learn from the mistakes of others.

King David's idleness caused his mind to contemplate adultery with Bathsheba. Weariness led Elijah to view death as preferable to life. Genesis 3:6 indicates pride may have played a part in Eve listening to the serpent. Lust may have prompted Solomon to desire many wives, including unbelieving ones. Add to these a sense of spiritual or emotional neediness and emptiness, and we have at least six situations that are fertile ground for temptation. In some biblical examples, temptation was resisted. But in others, the individuals gave in. We can all identify.

The many different types of temptation follow a similar pattern. The eye looks, the mind desires, and the will acts. King David looked at Uriah's wife and inquired about her. Then, he acted. Joshua 7:20-21 tells the story of Achan. He helped in the Jericho conquest and noticed all the material wealth. Then, he coveted it in his mind and took what he wanted.

Regardless of the reason for vulnerability, each person is responsible for his actions. In times of weakness, don't let yourself become too Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. I have turned that warning into the acronym "H.A.L.T." Most importantly, fix your attention on the Lord. Draw strength from Him, and experience victory over temptation.
