PERSERVERANCE
Topic: James 1:12
"Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him." James 1:12

Michelle Akers was a member of the Gold-Metal-winning US Women's Soccer Team in the 1996 Olympics. She remains the all-time leading scorer with 92 goals in 109 international matches.

Michelle knows God has a plan for her life. She knows that, even in the face of at least 2 dozen surgeries in the course of her 15-year career.

She?s learned a lot about perseverance during those rough times.

Michelle admits that it was her job to work at accepting His will in order to become the person God wanted her to be.

Friend, you may never become an Olympic champion, but God has a plan for your life too. It starts by being obedient to Him in Bible study and in prayer. Be patient! Ask God to use you right where you are.

"Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him." James 1:12

What is the result of perservering faithfully? (Hint: See Romans 5:1-5.)

All Have Gone Astray
Topic: Isaiah 53:6
The Bible says, "All we like sheep have gone astray" (Isaiah 53:6). Man is like sheep. We wander around blind; we get lost. We're lost from God. We've strayed from God. ...

Jesus tells a story of a lost sheep. This farmer had 99 sheep that were safe, but one had wandered away. He was lost. So this shepherd decided that he was going to go after the one lost sheep. After much searching, he found the sheep. And he called all of his friends together, and they rejoiced because he had found the sheep (Luke 15:4-6). Are you that one lost sheep? Jesus Christ would have died on the cross if no one had been lost but you. God loves you and He's searching for you.

The shepherd lives with his sheep. He gives them food and protection and security. Jesus said, "I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20). Whatever happens, however sick you may get—you may lose a child, you may lose a father or a mother—Jesus is with you. You're the sheep; He's the shepherd. He loves you, and He gave His life for you. When He died on the cross, God took all of our sins and laid them on Him.

Lord, we thank You for sending Jesus to find us when we had wandered far from You. Help us to stay close to you as we seek out those who are still lost and need to hear of the salvation that you offer them through Christ. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

HOW HIGH IS YOUR MOUNTAIN
Topic: John 3:1-21
O LORD, when you favored me, you made my mountain Psalm 30:7

In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. Psalm 95:4

The Appalachian mountains begin in Virginia and extend southward all the way into the northern part of Georgia. Called the Blue Ridge because of their often blue hazy color, they have a certain quiet and serene beauty. No part of the range is more beautiful or impressive than the Black Mountain area in Western North Carolina. There are more than eighty peaks above five thousand feet and nineteen above six thousand.

As I looked out today over the ridge and saw peaks too many to count, it looked as if God himself had used the palm of his hand to create ridges and undulations on the terrain and then used a giant brush to add touches of blue, gray and green. How can anyone look at something like that and not believe in a creating God? The Psalms cry out that the "Mountain peaks belong to Him."

Mt. Mitchell is the tallest at 6684 feet above sea level. Today, Beverley and I drove as far as we could and then hiked the rest of the way, finally climbing to the observation deck where it seemed like we could see forever. Next to the observation tower is the grave of Elijah Mitchell, for whom the mountain is named.

Educated at Yale, Mitchell became a professor at America's first state university, The University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill. When not in the classroom, he was in the field conducting studies in physical geography, particularly the measuring of mountains. At the time, Grandfather Mountain was assumed to be the highest point in the region, but previous trips to the area had persuaded Mitchell that the Black Mountains were higher.

Through the use of barometric pressure readings and mathematical formulas, Mitchell figured the highest elevation of the range to be 6,476 feet, higher than that of Grandfather Mountain. Subsequent visits to the Black Mountains in 1838 and 1844 led Dr. Mitchell to calculate the height of the peak at 6,672 feet - amazingly, only a mere 12 feet in error according to modern calculations. Dr. Mitchell challenged conventional wisdom and proved it wrong.

But, Mitchell was more than a geography professor. He was also an ordained Presbyterian minister who preached the Gospel all over North Carolina. When I visited the small museum near the summit, I was attracted to a tract that had been among his possessions printed by the National Tract Society in 1855, entitled "How Can I Be Saved?"

It reminded me of another inquisitive person from long ago, when a man named Nicodemus asked what he could do to be saved. At that time, conventional wisdom among the chosen people believed that salvation came through good works and abeyance of the law, but Jesus came to challenge conventional wisdom and to provide a better way.

I would like to have heard a message preached by Dr. Mitchell as he waived the little tract I saw displayed in the case and told people how important it was to be saved. It was important then and it is important today, a hundred and fifty years later.

Some things never change.

Yepper, being in the mountains really is a spiritual experience.

How would you answer Nicodemus if he asked you what it means to be "born again"?

A SAFE PLACE TO RUN

What are you running from?

"The Lord is a mighty tower where his people can run for safety." (Proverbs 18:10, CEV)

I'd always heard that the Great Wall of China was an amazing structure. When we visited China to minister to the churches I had an opportunity to see for myself.

It IS amazing! Nothing but walls and gates and towers for as far as the eye can see. Mile after mile after mile of fortification and protection.

Proverbs 18:10 tells us that God is a strong tower! God is our protector! Not mile after mile, but trial after trial. Moment after moment, hour after hour, circumstance after circumstance, surgery after surgery, disappointment after disappointment, God is a strong tower.

He is faithful and trustworthy. If you read through the pages of history recorded in Scripture you see time and time again God's faithful hand in saving his people. Just the very NAME of God emanates strength. It is in his name that we have power, victory, faith, hope and love.

I like that phrase, "The righteous run to it and are safe." (NIV)

Do you run to God to find safety? Often we look instead to things or people to sedate our anxieties.

Today, when you find yourself becoming anxious about the cares of life, run to him.

Don't wait, don't walk, RUN to your Heavenly Father who waits with open arms to give you safety and comfort.

Ready, set, go!

Point to ponder: God is your Protector and your Strong Tower -- trial after trial.

"The Lord is a mighty tower where his people can run for safety." (Proverbs 18:10, CEV)

What will you do about it: The next time you start worrying, don't run to your friends or some other diversion. Instead, run to God and ask him to help.

Thank God that there's nothing you face without him. Thank him for his love and protection.

Where do you see examples in the Bible of people running to God during times of distress?

What happens when you become a Christian?

He gives you new powers, new directions, new visions, new dimensions of living, when you come to know Him. He once said, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, [the preaching of] deliverance to the captives, [the] recovering of sight to the blind, [and] to set at liberty them that are bruised". Good news for the poor! Good news for the suffering! Good news for the enslaved! Good news for the blind! Christ can indeed cope with the social problems of the world if we have the capacity. And He gives that capacity when we come to Him and accept Him as Savior.

As Mr. Graham says, you become new when you come to Jesus Christ by faith, and accept him as Savior. To make a decision of faith today, call at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, toll-free, at 1-866-JESUS-CARES. Or, click billygraham.org.

THE TRUTH ABOUT FEELINGS
Topic: Philippians 1:9-10
... And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ .... (Philippians 1:9-10 NIV)

Submitted now for your consideration: Pamela, a loving wife, a nurturing mother, a prayerful Christian. This morning, her husband, Richard, left a tender note on the bathroom mirror, inviting Pamela to join him for lunch at their favorite restaurant.

Pamela eyes the clock throughout the morning, anticipating meeting her life-long love at 1 p.m. She's excited and feeling extraordinarily loved by her husband, so she leaves for the restaurant early in order to buy Richard a small gift. She splurges more, buying two balloons, which float up from the ribbon wrapped around the present.

As she pays for the gift, she looks in her purse and notices she's left her cell phone at home -- again. No matter, it's 12:30 and in a few short minutes she'll be with Richard, giving him her undivided attention. Who needs a cell phone in moments like that?

Pamela arrives at the restaurant first and patiently waits for Richard to arrive. What she doesn't yet know is that Richard has been in a horrible traffic accident and was pronounced dead on the scene at 12:24 -- about the time Pamela was tying the balloons to the bow, buoyantly anticipating the approaching romantic rendezvous.

The point to this sorrowful snapshot is that our feelings don't always reflect the truth. Pamela is soaring high on her feelings of love, even though her husband is already dead. The truth is bearing down on her, and it will immediately alter her feelings when it hits -- but her feelings are not yet in line with the truth.

Imagine Pamela as she waits for her husband, and he does not arrive. She's forgotten her cell phone, so she waits. After a while, she becomes annoyed; after 20 minutes, she's irritated and hurt. Her feelings still do not line up with the truth.

After 40 minutes, she begins to worry. This just isn't like Richard. Maybe something has happened. She asks to borrow the restaurant's phone, and she calls Richard's office, but is transferred to his boss. He says, "Pamela, we've been trying to reach you. There's been a terrible accident ...." The truth and Pamela's feelings collide.

The fact is, God gave us feelings. There's nothing wrong with them. As one of my friends often says, "Feelings are just feelings." Sometimes they reflect the truth; oftentimes they don't. They can provide positive insight, such as when our fear warns us of nearby danger, or they can give us social discernment, like when we realize we're falling in love.

But your feelings do not define the truth. Only God defines the truth. You may feel worthless, but the truth is you are uniquely created by God, who loves you deeply. You may feel like you can walk on water, but the truth is you can only do that if Jesus calls you from the boat. You can't; God can.

Just as the Apostle John tells us to test the spirits (1 John 4:1-3), Paul teaches us to discern the truth through knowledge and deep insight, not through our feelings. He writes, "... and this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ ...." (Philippians 1:9-10 NIV)

Eugene Peterson, in The Message paraphrase of the Bible, translates it like this: "... You need to use your head and test your feelings so that your love is sincere and intelligent, not sentimental gush ...." (Philippians 1:9b-10a MSG) Otherwise, you end up in a life "shaped by things and feelings, instead of God." (Colossians 3:5 MSG)

Your feelings are from God. They are a gift, and there is no need to avoid them or be ashamed of them. Yet God never meant for our feelings to be the gauge that measures your life and how you live it. Your feelings are not designed to define you or interpret the situations you now face. Only God's truth can define you, and only God's truth can pass judgment on the circumstances of your life.

The great and best Good News is this: God's truth is a person -- Jesus Christ, our Lord.

What does this mean?

~ You are not your emotions -- You are not defined by your emotions. You are defined by God. You may feel worthless, but God says you are wonderfully and fearfully created in his image. You may feel like you've failed God, but God says you are accepted in the beloved and that he loves you no matter what you've done.

~ God uses your feelings -- God may use your feelings to reveal a piece of your heart that you need to turn over to God; he may use your feelings to draw you closer to him. Paul speaks of feeling like a wretched man, and that draws him deeper into the grace of God. Your feelings of hopelessness in a situation may be what God uses to show you that you're hanging your hopes on the wrong thing -- because he is a God of hope, and it is a hope that will not disappoint.

~ Your obedience is based on the truth, not feelings -- The facts may appear daunting, but it is up to God to interpret the facts, not you and your feelings. God calls us to be obedient to the truth, not the way we feel. In Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis says that if you don't love someone, act as if you do, and your feelings will catch up.

Do you give feelings their proper place rather than treating them as  truth or disregarding them all together?

WHICH WOLF ARE YOU FEEDING?
Topic: James 1:19-21
Is anger a problem for you? Take this e-course on overcoming anger

http://thelife.com/study/angrywithoutsinning.htmll?section=angrywithoutsin

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. James 1:19-21

There's an old fable about a Cherokee Indian elder who was teaching his grandchildren about life. He said to them, "A fight is going on inside you.  It is a terrible fight between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight going on inside of you is inside every other person, too."

The children thought about it for a minute, and then one child asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The old Cherokee elder replied simply, "The one you feed."

A Rabbi expressed it this way: "The two wolves symbolize the Evil Inclination (Yetzer Hora) and the Good Inclination (Yetzer Hatov). The former thrives on bodily appetites, while the latter thrives on Torah, prayer, and good deeds. Eventually, one swallows the other."

Paul talked about in his letter to the Galatians, telling them to live by the Spirit, and not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. He said the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature.

In case the Galatians didn't know how to identify these traits, Paul spelled them out: sexual immorality, impurity debauchery, idolatry witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions envy, drunkenness, orgies, and the like. And then he went on to enumerate the fruits of the Spirit which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Reading this causes me to take inventory of my inner self. Clearly, I can see the two wolves within me. Clearly they are in competition. Clearly, on my own I have not the ability to triumph good over evil from within. But the wonderful part of the story is that through the Spirit of Christ, I can overcome all things and I can be the kind of person God uniquely created me to be. I can be all things through Christ who strengthens me.

So, I encourage you to do as I did. Take an inner inventory. Decide who you want to be and who God wants you to be. And, above all else, make sure each day that you take time to feed the right wolf.

Which wolf are you feeding today?

To be Happy
For many of us, the search for happiness seems like it never ends. Here's Billy Graham to help us understand why:

In order to be happy, the Reader’s Digest said, a person must have someone to love, something to do, something to hope for. Jesus Christ is that someone to love. He will love you back the rest of your life with a love that is deeper than any love you ever knew. Hope is both biologically and psychologically vital for man and woman. Do you have that hope?

How would you answer?
If you can't answer "yes" to Mr. Graham's question, please call the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and talk with someone about what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It's a toll free call, 866-JESUS CARES. Or click billygraham.org.

Man of Power
Franklin Graham talks about Naman, a man who seemed to have everything:

Naman was a man of power, great power, the commander in chief of the largest army in the world at that time. He was a man of integrity; he was honest, moral man. And the Bible says that human goodness and morality is not enough to satisfy God. It’s not enough to be just a good person, and I’m sure today there are many of you in this audience, you consider yourself a good person. Well, Naman considered himself a good man. It’s not enough that you’re religious. It’s not enough that you pray. It’s not enough that you tithe. It’s not enough that you’re a Sunday School teacher. You’ve got to be born again.

You will be born again when you come to Jesus Christ through faith. To make that decision and begin a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, call the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, toll free, at 866-JESUS-CARES. Or click billygraham.org.

WHAT ARE YOU FEEDING YOUR SPIRIT?
Topic: 2 Peter 2:2
"...crave pure spiritual milk so that by it you may grow up in your salvation"  (2 Peter 2:2)

He said he felt flat. It felt like he was running on empty. He knew Jesus but he still felt like something was missing in his life. It was like a hunger deep within. I asked him what he had been feeding his spirit. "What do you mean???" he asked.

Just as our body needs food so does our spirit. We rarely think about the diet our spirit is getting. Taking a close look at what you have been feeding your spirit will likely reveal why that deep hunger exists at times. Where has your focus been? Ask yourself a few questions....

Am I allowing my spirit to spiral down with thinking filled with worry?

Has busyness crowded out my quiet time to think about the choices I am making? We change with the influences around us.

Is my entertainment feeding me things that actually rob my spirit??

Am I surrounding myself with people that encourage me or pull me down?

What desires am I focusing on?

Who am I becoming?

God tells us in His Word what will fill the craving in your soul like nothing else can.  Listen to what it says in 2 Peter 2:2...

"...crave pure spiritual milk so that by it you may grow up in your salvation."

The craving deep in your soul is a craving for God's Word. It is a call to pay attention to the Bible. That may sound trite and could be easily brushed off. We have heard it all before.

But check it out. Is your soul hungry? Does it feel like something is missing? Take one week and pay close attention to God's Word. Read it, think about it, write out a verse or two that stands out to you. Make an appointment to spend time with God just as you would make any other appointment. Let worship music dust off your soul. Pray, read and listen. Let God's Word penetrate your heart. It will feed your soul and fill you in ways you have forgotten. Don't settle for less.

Father God, my soul feels hungry. I confess that what I have been feeding my soul has simply been junk food. I long for Your filling. Show me treasures in Your Word as I make time for You this week. Fill me up, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, and help me not to settle for less. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Are you paying attention to what you are feeding your spirit?

ABOUND WITH BLESSINGS
Topic: Proverbs 28:21-28
"A faithful man will abound with blessings, but he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished"

(Proverbs 28:20, RSV)

"Years ago when my children were small," declared a godly Baptist layman in South Carolina, who was secretary and treasurer of a large cotton mill corporation, "my salary was too small for my actual needs. Strive as I would I could not keep out of debt.

"This became a heavy cross to me, and one night I was unable to sleep. I arose and went to my desk, where I spent some time in prayer to God for help and guidance. Then I took a pen and paper and wrote out a solemn contract with my heavenly Father."

Continuing, the layman said, "I promised Him that no matter what testings or trials came I would never turn back. Also, that no matter how pressing my obligations I would scrupulously tithe my income. Next I promised the Lord that if He would let me make a certain salary I would pay two- tenth, then if I made a certain larger salary I would pay three-tenths.

"Finally I named a larger salary, which was far beyond anything I had ever hoped to earn, and told the Lord if I ever reached such a salary I would give him one-half of my income. For many years it has been my privilege to give one- half of my income to the Lord."

This verse warns the man who is so determined to accumulate personal wealth that he robs God of that which is rightfully His. That man will not go unpunished. God promises. May He help us to give cheerfully of that which He entrusts to us.

Is God a part of your financial planning?

THE SECRETS YOU CAN'T KEEP
Topic: Job 34:21

Please read Jesus' words in Luke 12:2,3 The time is coming when everything will be revealed; all that is secret will be made public. Whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be shouted from the housetops for all to hear.

We need to remember that whatever is done in "secret" is not really secret at all. Even if we have been able to fool our family and friends, God is not fooled. God carefully watches the way people live; he sees everything they do. (Job 34:21)

If it is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret? (Ephesians 5:12), what about the things that we as Christians shamefully do in secret? Do we who personally know Jesus our God, keep secret sins hidden in our hearts: even we, who have been redeemed by His blood. Unfortunately, we still do stumble, and we must recognize we are still sinners. If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth. But by continually returning to God by readjusting our lives we have hope: If we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. (1 John 1:8,9)

Your challenge today: What parts of your secret life would cause you to be ashamed if they were made public? Will you be able to say, like Paul: I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful (2 Timothy 4:7)

Trusted family members, friends and members of your church can be a great support to you, and there are many resources available online that can help you: http://www.mentodayonline.com/resources/ Resources for Men.

You can also speak privately and confidentially to a mentor online: http://www.mentodayonline.com/chat/askus.html.

By continually working on removing our secret sin, our lives will become self - evangelistic. They will become lights shining to point others towards the grace of God, since You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. (Matthew 5:14)

GOD IS ENOUGH
Topic: Psalm 23

What is overwhelming you today?

But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

Do you sometimes feel like you've got more than you can handle? Like you're stuck in a tunnel with no end in sight? The demands and the stresses of life can easily overwhelm any of us, but they are no match for the risen Son of God. When we go to him we have enough to get us through.

Corrie ten Boem incarcerated in a prison camp suffered all kinds of atrocities. She watched her sister die. Her father also died. By a fluke she was released from prison and became a tramp for the Lord. She, who had experienced God's love in the pit of human depravity, asked, "How do you know God is enough unless you get into a situation where you have nothing left but God?"

As a private duty nurse, I saw, firsthand, how God's strength is enough even at a death bed.

Florence was coaxing her beloved husband who was in the last stages of cancer, to take a drink of the fruit egg nog she had prepared for him. But being unconscious, he couldn't drink. Seeing her so distraught, I wondered what can I do to bring some comfort? Suddenly I remembered what she had told me on the previous day, "When Paul was well," she had said, "he would spend hours at the piano playing hymns."

Now I suggested we sing Paul's favourite hymn. "Amazing grace," she began, then her voice cracked. "How sweet the sound." It was more of a sob than a song. But she managed to get through the stanzas. Next we sang, "What a Friend we have in Jesus," followed by "Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine." With every song her voice became stronger. As we continued to sing, something wonderful happened. There was a Presence in the room. Florence's anguished face became relaxed and gentle. Then, with a voice full of confidence she said, "Paul, this is not defeat. This is victory!"

An amazing strength had seeped into Florence's heart and mind by singing those songs. That strength carried her through the funeral and the coming months of grieving.

What are you facing right now? Take heart! God intends to walk you through the valley. You're not destined to stay there. (Psalm 23) And at the end of it all, you'll see that God was there all the time. Your understanding of God's faithfulness will be greater and deeper for having gone through the experience.

Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me back to your dwelling. I want to be led, not by my moods, but by the truth of God.

Do you have more than you can handle right now? Stop where you are, focus on all God is and put your needs into His capable hands. Do you believe He is enough for what you face today?

TOO TIGHT'S NOT RIGHT
Topic: John 14:26-27

Are you uptight today?

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:26-27

It seems like the older I get, the more up tight I get over even the smallest of things and it really got to bothering me. So I said to my self, "self you need to get a hold on this temper of yours." Actually I need to be more like my wife, who never gets up tight over anything except when she gets up tight at me when I get up tight over things I should not get up tight over. She sluffs everything off, saying "What's it going to matter a hundred years from now?"

A few months ago I asked God to help me to not sweat the small things, and the big things too, for that matter. I have been working on it real hard and making progress. When something upsets my plans, I just sit back and ask God what he is trying to show me or to protect me from. What lessons do I learn from this rock in the middle of my otherwise smooth and well planned road?

Take for instance the other night. I was flying from the northern part of the state five hundred miles to the south. When I got to the airport, my flight was delayed an hour. Oh well, it was non stop so I would only be an hour late to my destination. I sat and read. Then the hour delay turned into two and then three and then maybe not if "we can't find a back up plane."

As I stood in front of the counter I took note of the passengers fuming, cursing and being mean to the nice lady behind the counter who was doing the best she could. While everyone was protesting, I noted a plane about to depart to Atlanta and walked over to that counter. I took note of the lady's name, put on my best charm and said "Leigh Ann, you look like you've had a hard and long day and I bet you would want to top it off by helping a nice man like me get to Miami." Surprised, she looked up at me and said, "Well let me see what I can do."

Sure enough, she had one seat left and a very tight connection, but I took the challenge and walked right on board. When we landed in Atlanta, we had a little over thirty minutes before the Miami flight and then had to wait for a gate. People were fuming and yelling at the crew. Finally the door was open and everyone scrambled, except that is for those of us who had to claim planeside checked baggage. Unloading took for ever and the people fumed. I refused to get up tight.

And then I saw it. In the western sky was the most gorgeous sunset one could ever lay eyes on. It had red, turquoise and rose, with a light green border. Rays of sunlight shot out in three directions. It was absolutely stunning. I just stood there, thanked God for His beauty and thought it was worth all the hassle of being redirected just to see that sight. People almost mauled the poor ramp agent who brought the baggage cart and tripped over one another to get to their bags. I am sure no one else saw the sky. Actually, I got so enthralled in the aura in the sky that I was the last to pick up my bag, and then slowly.

As I walked to the terminal I kept looking over my shoulder and then out the windows just to get a last glimpse of God's daily farewell sign. I didn't run, but walked briskly over three concourses and was the last to board the Miami flight. I still think God held it a minute or two and also reserved a space for my luggage in the overhead.

As I settled into my seat and we taxied out, I couldn't get the sunset out of my mind. It was like a glimpse of heaven. And I think it was God's sign to me that he is pleased with my progress in controlling my emotions. I have a long ways to go, but with God's help, I am making progress.

So remember, don't get so tangled up in the hustle and hassle of the world that you loose sight of the everyday sunsets God's sends into your life.

What  can you do today to loosen the grip of stress on your life?

OUR STRONG AND FAITHFUL GOD
Topic: Psalm 91
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1

The Name: Elohim; God, Strong and Faithful, Three in One

Jehovah-Elohim; LORD God

The Only True God, The Only Wise God, The God of all Grace; The God of Hope
Jn 17:3; Mr. 16:27; 1 Pt 5:10; Mr. 15:13

Father in Heaven,

This morning I thank you that You are the Strong and Faithful One. You alone are the LORD God Almighty. Today I ask that You would be to me just exactly what I need today.

A PATTERN OF POWERFUL PRAYER
Topic: Colossians 1:9-14
If someone should pose the question, "How can I pray for you?" would you be able to give a clear answer? Oftentimes we simply do not know what to say. The same thing can happen with our friends - when we ask them that question, we frequently get a vague answer. Learning to pray for one another does not come naturally; we have to be taught. That is why the Bible contains many patterns for effective prayer.

One such pattern is found in Paul's epistle to the saints at Colossae. He asks that they may be "filled with the knowledge of His will" (Colossians 1:9). This means that we can come to know what God is up to in our lives. When we understand His will, that knowledge is most satisfying and precious.

Paul's prayer also includes a second request on behalf of the Colossians. He asks that they will have more than just an understanding of what is right; he prays that they may walk in a manner worthy of Christ and that they should be strengthened with all power. (verses 10-11)

Such a transformed walk can be so attractive that onlookers will come to recognize God at work in the lives of His children. Believers can display the heavenly Father's power to forgive sins, and they can walk before Him in holiness.

These are the specific requests we should make when praying for others. To effect a double blessing, we can ask the same things for ourselves. And this powerful prayer will always be answered because it is in full accordance with the will of God.

Do you feel free to offer prayer to your friends?

GIVING WITHOUT COMPARING
"For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have." (2 Corinthians 8:12)

God calls us to give - our time, our possessions, and our money -- to those in need. Yet often we get distracted in our giving by making comparisons. We notice that she gave more time that we did or that we gave more money than he did.

The Bible tells us that our gift is measured, not in comparison to other people but, by how much we have. Thus a person with a six figure income who gives one hundred dollars to charity every now and again is not honoring God, but a person on a fixed income who tithes her tiny amount is.

Our natural tendency to compare draws our focus away from honoring God, away from caring for the poor, and puts it back on us. Self-centered thinking is a trap that robs us of the joy that comes from serving God by giving.

The Bible teaches us how we should give:

"Each of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way the LORD your God has blessed you." (Deuteronomy 16:17)

"But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. (Matthew 6:3, 4)

"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously." (2 Corinthians 9:6)

"Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Corinthians 9:7)

~God, help me to be a willing, cheerful giver who doesn't make comparisons to anyone else.

What keeps you from giving generously? Why is thinking my gift is too insignificant to do any good just as bad as thinking I really am great because I give large amounts?

POWER IN HIS NAME
Topic: Proverbs 18:10
"The Name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous runs into it and is saved." Proverbs 18:10

The Name: Adonai-Jehovah;  Lord GOD, Sovereign LORD, The Majesty, enthroned above the circle of the earth, enthroned on high, enthroned in heaven.

Dear Father in Heaven,

Thank you that You are the Sovereign LORD, the Majesty, the Lord GOD of every detail of my life. Thank you that Your word says that You are enthroned above the circle of the earth.

What a picture Lord... You alone, over the circle of the whole earth.  You alone on the throne over all things, over everything! ! Our Great God and King over all other gods who try to pose as the one and only.  Nothing trumphs Your place of majesty and power in our lives!

No person, no words, no attitudes or actions toward me can overpower the fact that You alone are enthroned over me and around me. All that encompasses me today is covered by You.

Help me to rest in this wonderful picture today. You, encircled over  me and all that concerns me today. Thank you Lord.

Grant me wisdom today, Lord. Empower me with strength within my frame in my mind, my emotions, my body and my spirit. May I feel sheltered and protected under the circle of Your presence today.

In Jesus Name I pray, amen.

Can you put your concerns today in the hands of this great God and trust Him to work it out?

ALL THE BUILDERS TOOLS WERE SILENT
Topic: Psalm 46

What is making your heart dry today?

The marketplace is empty, No more traffic in the streets, All the builders' tools are silent, No more time to harvest wheat; Busy housewives cease their labors, In the courtroom no debate, Work on earth is all suspended As the King comes thro' the gate.

Elaina's factory in Ancuncion, Paraguay was different than most and I could tell something was different as I walked through the door. It was clean, calm and orderly. The workers were polite and their faces projected a glowing smile. We were there to go to church.

Go to church? In a factory? It seems that Elaina, a committed Christian who believes in sharing her faith and treating her workers well. She also is interested in maximizing her profits. She has found a way to do all three.

Her factory makes clothing, beautiful clothing from bolts of cloth, but for fifteen minutes each work day and for a full hour one day of each week, the sewing machines are silenced and the cutting tables idle, as all the workers gather for a time of worship, praise and receiving instruction and inspiration from the Word of God. It is a beautiful sight to see.

We enjoyed fellowshipping and worshiping with them. I was invited to bring a short devotion and as I stood behind the microphone and looked out over the audience, out of one eye I saw attentive faces ready to grasp each and every word and out of the other eye, I saw rows of silent machinery.

Suddenly the lyrics of that popular Christian song, The King is Coming came to mind, especially the line about all the builders tools being silent. I thought of Psalm 46, "Be still and know that I am God." You could have heard a pin drop. People were reverent, machines were silent and they were ready to have church, and Elaina was sitting right there on the front row with her workers.

God calls us to be still, to be silent and to worship Him. At the end of the day Eliana's workers produce more though they take time out of the day to worship and pray. It reminded me of the wood cutting riddle about two wood cutters who chopped wood for a whole day. One never stopped. The other stopped for five minutes each hour and he was the one to chop the most wood, because each time he stopped, he sharpened his axe.

When we stop to worship, God honors our reverence to Him and at the end of the day, we are better off because we have stopped to be with Him.

Do you take time to worship and pray each day? If you don't give it a try and see what great things happen in your life. God honors you as you honor Him.

What do you do  to connect with the Lord? Is your heart thirsty for Him today?

THE REAL CEO
Topic: Matthew 28:19-20
Have you experienced hurt from a Christian who wasn't concerned about how they demonstrated love?

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you. Matthew 28:19-20

When I took a marketing course in college, I studied organizational charts and I always thought that the CEO was the head banana in pecking order of the organizational pyramid. I mean, the one who hires, fires and inspires, the one where, you know, the buck stops on his desk. But, when I recently made a trip to the local office supply chain store, I met a new kind of CEO.

As I was walking up and down the various aisles amidst numerous varieties of electronic gadgetry, the CEO approached me, introducing himself as David and asked if  he could "enhance my shopping experience." I told him that my visit was not a major social event and all I needed was a new fax machine, I glanced at his name tag and realized that he was my CEO or "Customer Experience Officer."

It was his assignment to make sure that my visit to the store was a memorable one. He began by giving me a verbal virtual store tour. I guess he thought he could convince me to restock my office with everything from paper clips to all the new electronic gadgetry he was so eager to show me, until I either filled it up or maxed out the limit on my credit card, whichever should first occur. I patiently listened to his speel, though all I wanted to do is dash in, find a cheap fax machine and dash out.

I really had other, more exciting things to do elsewhere on this Saturday evening, but I must say that I was impressed with this guy. He loved his job, knew his products and wanted his employer to succeed by motivating me to buy more than I went shopping for. He believed in his job and he believed in himself.

Life is like that. God placed us here to enhance the lives of others. Often people want to dash in, grab an insignificant slice of the pie of life and hit the road before they can comprehend all the blessings God has made available to them.

As Christians, it is our responsibility to be a "customer experience officer" for others. Like the man in the store, God wants me to reach out to others and love doing it. He wants us to love him, love others and love what we do. He wants us to know the Gospel He calls us to spread and He wants us to motivate others to find in life not only what they weren't looking for , but that which they did not know even existed.

He wants us to be bold and yet gentle at the same time. He wants us to share in love not in condemnation. He wants to enhance our life experience and wants us to lead others to fulfilling lives.

Are you prepared? Are you willing to spread the Gospel throughout all the land?

Are you wiling to be someone's "life experience officer?"

Reach out to others and remember that love is not until you give it away,  (a thought on life from John Grant)

What kind of experience do people have as they come in contact with you? Where can you specifically give love away today?
