CHARACTERISTICS OF GODLY LIVING
Topic: Psalm 119:1-7
The culture we live in places great emphasis on physical fitness. However, the Word of God tells us that "physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things?" (1 Timothy 4:8).

There is a simple way to grow in godliness: give Scripture priority in both your personal and professional life. You will know that you have given the Word its proper place when your time of biblical meditation brings deeper satisfaction than your other pleasures. The more you allow scriptural principles to shape your decision - making, the more you will be like a tree firmly planted by a stream, able to withstand the storms of life. (Psalm 1:3) Besides being continually nourished and strengthened, you will also produce abundant spiritual fruit. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Indications that you are maturing in godliness include: accepting God's pruning in order to have increased fruitfulness; demonstrating the patience to live by His timetable; investing yourself professionally and personally for the benefit of others; and being content, even when circumstances are less than optimal. In addition, long periods of worry will diminish, but when fear does arise, you will rest in God's sufficiency. (Philippians 4:13)

As we frame our viewpoint with biblical principles, adjust our behavior to the Lord's standards, and invest ourselves in the life in others, godliness will characterize us more and more. The heavenly Father is pleased as His children's resemblance to Jesus becomes increasingly noticeable. Let's pursue Christlikeness with all our strength.

Who are some mature Christians in your life whom you can seek to emulate?

JESUS PRAYS FOR YOU
Topic: John17:20
"I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in Me through their message." John 17:20 (HCSB)

During the Last Supper, Jesus prayed for himself, and then he prayed for the disciples.

And then, with the hour of his death approaching, he took the time to pray for you. He prayed for all those who would believe through the ministry of the disciples, and that means you.

Jesus prayed for you, and this is what he said to God:

"I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in Me through their message. May they all be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I am in You. May they also be one in Us, so the world may believe You sent Me."

"I have given them the glory You have given Me. May they be one as We are one. I am in them and You are in Me. May they be made completely one, so the world may know You have sent Me and have loved them as You have loved Me."

"Father, I desire those You have given Me to be with Me where I am. Then they will see My glory, which You have given Me because You loved Me before the world's foundation." (John 17:20--24, HCSB)

What does this mean?

Jesus cares for you -- And, in fact, he still prays for you: "Therefore He is always able to save those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them." (Hebrews 7:25, HCSB)

Jesus wants you with him in heaven -- "Father, I desire those You have given Me to be with Me where I am." (John 17:24, HCSB)

Jesus empowers you to follow God's purpose -- "I have given them the glory You have given Me. May they be one as We are one. I am in them and You are in Me. May they be made completely one, so the world may know You have sent Me and have loved them as You have loved Me." (John 17:22--23, HCSB)

Does the fact that Jesus prayed for you make it easier to pray to Him?

IN TIMES OF TROUBLE
Topic: 2 Corinthians 4:8-9
Former presidential hopeful John Edwards drifted away from his faith when he left home to attend college. His faith became a matter of routine. He attended church, but had no personal, vibrant, resonant faith. Then, tragically, his 16 year old son died. Afterward, his faith in God "came roaring back" and hasn't left him since.

Sometimes struggle makes us aware of just how much we depend on God: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1)

Whatever trouble we're going through, God is always with us. Paul himself was been "perplexed" as to why he was suffering, but he knew that he could have faith (trust) in God. Since Jesus suffered, as followers of Jesus sometimes we too will sometimes suffer, for "no servant is greater than his master" (John 13:16). How great a promise God gives us that he will never abandon us!

What is troubling you today? Our natural instinct is to obssess over the "Why?" question. Instead, why not try to focus on the "What?" question: "What shall I do next?" And leave the rest to God, who is our refuge, gives us strength in times of trouble, and gave His life so we will live.

"I can do everything through Him who gives me strength." (Phillipians 4:13)

How has God taught you life lessons before through times of struggle?

HARDENED HEARTS AND FUTILE THINKING
Topic: Ephesians 4:17-18
"So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts" (Ephesians 4: 17-18).

Paul is exhorting us not to live like unbelievers with futile thinking. If we look carefully at his words we will realize that the problem didn't start in their minds; it started in their hearts.

Thus by starting at the end of these verses and working backward, we can see the downward spiral.

Hardening of their hearts led to ignorance. They became ignorant of the truth.

Their ignorance of the truth caused them to be separated from God, because God is truth.

Their ignorance also meant they became darkened in their understanding.

Finally, separation from God and darkened understanding resulted in futile thinking.

Therefore if our hearts have been hardened, we can't rely on our reasoning. Our very thought process has become useless and vain. Because we were created by God, it is only in right relationship with God that we can think rightly.

How do our hearts become hardened?

It doesn't happen all at once. Sin's deceitfulness creeps insidiously into our hearts by degrees. Every time we choose our way over God's way our heart becomes a little more resistant to the truth. Every time God whispers what is right and we choose to act according to our will rather than His, we harden our hearts.

Soon we lose all sensitivity to the truth of God. Our thinking becomes futile because it is no longer based on the truth.

~ God, don't let me harden my heart. When I hear Your voice, help me to respond with humility. Your ways are right and true; show me how to walk in them.

Can you trust your thinking, if your heart is hard? What does the connection between a hard heart and futile thinking mean for your life today?

HUMBLENESS THAT LEADS TO GREATNESS
Topic: Luke 19:38
"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" Luke 19:38

After going through the buffet line, Beverley and I chose seats at a vacant table and shortly others joined us. One was a very handsome young man. He spoke flawless English, but with enough of an accent that I knew he was from a foreign land. We exchanged the usual pleasantries, but nothing in depth.

After breakfast, I asked where he was from and when he told me, I proceeded to tell him how much Beverley and I enjoyed out visit to his homeland and then I launched into my political analysis of his country, expressing my own views. When I finished, he very politely said, "Your really understand my country," and then we went on our separate way.

Shortly thereafter, when I heard someone refer to him as "Your Majesty,"  I wanted to melt into the carpet, realizing I had just told a royal prince how to run his own country. I guess that's why I never ended up in the diplomatic corps!

It turns out he is Prince Misu Zulu Zula, Crown Prince of the Zulu nation and heir to the throne of the second largest monarchy in the world. In the course of the week end, we actually got to be pretty good friends and agreed to meet again in Florida. I invited him to stay in our home and go to church with us.

When I saw his aide checking out of the hotel on Sunday and experiencing some difficulty with the billing, I whipped out my Amex card and paid the bill. It was worth it to have a receipt to show my grandchildren and tell them about when I covered lodging for a real prince.

The prince is in line for the crown, following centuries of his ruling family over the "Warrior Tribe." But, this prince is a different kind of prince. His life was changed when at age fourteen, he gave his heart to Christ at a youth rally and nothing has been the same since.

His heart is filled with compassion and love for his people. He hurts where they hurt. One in three are dying of HIV/AIDS. He asked the question, "Who am I going to rule tomorrow?" He is trying to bring a message of hope to his people and it isn't easy going against culture, tradition and the local religion of Witchcraft.

He tells his people that if they have a choice between gold and diamonds in one hand and a book in the other, take the book, because the book  is the Bible. He gives thanks for missionaries who came to his country not to condemn but to offer new hope through a spiritual alternative and he ends his message with the assurance that "through God, we can do it."

Yes we can, Your Majesty, yes we can.

What do you consider to be, or how do you define, "greatness"?

Follow Him

Franklin Graham speaks about Jesus Christ and the crowds that followed Him as He walked:

"As He came down the mountain a great multitude of people followed Him." It’s been two thousand years since this happened to where we are today, but you know, today thousands and thousands of people, multitudes all around the world, millions, are still following the Lord Jesus Christ, and tonight I’m going to give you that opportunity to follow Jesus Christ and to trust Him and to worship Him. Have you ever asked Jesus into your heart?

If you’ve never asked Jesus Christ into your heart, you can do that right now. We’re the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. For a free booklet about how to become a follower of Jesus Christ, or how to ask Him into your heart, call toll free at 866-JESUS-CARES. Or click

GOD IN NATURE
Topic: Psalm 19
Truly "the heavens declare the glory of God" (Psalm 19:1) and God is revealed in our natural world: "From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky and all that God made. They can clearly see his invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse whatsoever for not knowing God." (Romans 1:20)

It is, however, a mistake to base our beliefs on the natural world alone. Christian apologist Matthew Slick notes that "If we look at a beautiful sunrise, we decide god is 'good'; if we look at a hurricane, we decide god is "cruel'" for our world has been corrupted by sin. Although God's image which he imbued to us upon creation (Genesis 1:26) has been defaced by our sin, it can never be entirely erased. Similarly, although the world is corrupt, God's glory continues to peek through the dark clouds, providing illumination for all who allow God's light to shine in their hearts. (2 Corinthians 4:5-6)

After all, "Now we see things imperfectly as in a poor mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God knows me now." (1 Corinthians 13:12) While we might know about God from nature, we can only know Him personally through His Son Jesus Christ and by reading His word to us in the Bible. Nevertheless, we can experience God's real presence through His creation, and this is one of the amazing gifts that God has given us.

How can the grandeur of God's creation help a person begin to know the God who created it?

FOLLOW THE CRUMBS
Topic: 1 Kings 19:11
Many cultures have within their lore stories similar to Hsel and Gretel, a tale of Germanic origin and adapted by the Brothers Grimm: people happy and cared for, subsequent misfortune, loss, apparent escape, even greater danger and final deliverance. When the children are lost in the woods we read these words: "...as (Hansel) walked through the trees, he left a trail of crumbs behind him to mark the way."

How often do we feel like these lost children, wandering through a life that seems dark with dangerous shadows, not only unsure of our destination, but uncertain which fork of the road to take. Perhaps it is job uncertainty, or career choices or relationship questions. Sometimes it is even doubt about God's love or leading. What are some crumbs on the path to mark our way?

Author John Baillie writes, "I thank Thee that this Christian way whereon I walk is no untried or uncharted road, but a road beaten hard by the footsteps of saints, apostles, prophets, and martyrs. I thank Thee for the finger-posts and danger signals with which it is marked at every turning and which may be known to me through study of the Bible and of all history, and of all the great literature of the world."

God often directs us through the quiet voice of his Spirit speaking to the inner places of our own spirits, but He has also given us more visible crumbs along the way.  It is of vital importance that we pay close attention to those crumbs.

Bread crumbs don't seem like much, Lord, but sometimes those crumbs are all we have to follow. Thank you that through your Holy Spirit the crumbs can be magnified and thus visible to our seeking eyes.

How did people now in that "great cloud of witnesses" discern God's leading?

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Topic: Genesis 1-3

I saw a documentary last night about how our view of our own planet and its place in the universe has changed over time. Before Copernicus shocked the world with his announcement that we had been revolving around the sun all along, people thought our little planet was the center of the universe. In other words, we were of great importance in the grand scheme of things -- everything revolved around us.

What followed after Copernicus was a wide-scale denigration of our place in the universe. We became a tiny, infinitesimal dot in a vast array of galaxies by the millions and stars by the billions. We were the center of nothing -- not even our own tiny solar system -- greatly diminishing our place and any particular purpose we might have in the grand scheme of things. Along with this was the growing assumption, with so many more stars and solar systems out there, that we are not alone. There must be other solar systems and other planets out there that can support life -- and most likely other intelligent beings too. We're not so special after all.

So we went from being somebody to nobody, and the point of the documentary was to show that relatively new discoveries in the last 50 years are once again altering our perception of our place in the universe. According to scientists and astronomers, things may be looking up for the human race on earth. This time our importance is measured not by being in the center of the universe, but by being in a remarkable place not only in the solar system, but also in our galaxy -- a place that can support life and a place uniquely situated for us to observe and discover the universe around us. Or as they say in real estate: "Location, location, location!"

No, we are not the center of a solar system that revolves around us as the ancients believed, but neither are we a tiny blue dot lost in a cosmic sea. Instead, we are in a specific place suited perfectly for life and discovery. And as complicated as the universe is, its operation comes down to a few simple principles. In other words, we can understand our universe. As Albert Einstein concluded, "The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible."

If we aren't in the center of the universe, we are in the center of an intelligent mind that put us in this optimal place with minds to figure out how our universe works -- and hearts to seek out why.

No wonder we wonder about our purpose... we were made to wonder.

What most amazes you about creation?

FROM A PRISON TO A PALACE
Topic: Luke 4:18
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners." Luke 4:18

The prison door clanked loudly behind us as we passed through the gate. Once inside, we surrendered our valuables and passports and then received a pat down search before passing into the central prison area. We were at Paraguay's maximum security prison, home to 3200 inmates, including some of the worst of the worst. As we made our way through the central area of the prison, we were told to stay close to the security that flanked us on either side and not to make eye contact with the prisoners until we reached Liberta Church.

In many ways, this was like any other high security prison, with guards, guns and razor wire. But there was something different deep inside. Some 500 inmates had signed an agreement to be housed in the "church" section of the prison and live by the rules of the church and by the teachings of the Bible.

The church is run by prisoners and the pastor is a prisoner. Inmates awake each morning with Bible orally read over the loudspeakers. They study the Bible and share in small accountability groups. They worship together and study how to live their live by God's word. One inmate, in for an eighteen year sentence, has only three years to go and told us he looks forward to reuniting with his wife and children and to being a Godly father, husband and grandfather. Another inmate took me into his cell to show me his Bible.

We worshiped with them, sang with them and prayed with them. I was asked to speak to the nearly three hundred prisoners gathered in the courtyard of the church prison section. I brought them greetings from the American Bible Society and brought a brief devotional on the prison of the heart. I told them that the real prison of man is not one with walls and razor wire, but the prison of a heart lost in sin.

As I lifted my Bible in the air, I told them that "this book has the power to change your heart, your life and to change the world." I told them that that whoever they are or wherever they are, God has a plan for them to escape prison by accepting His son Jesus Christ and then their heart will  free. We came to bless them, but they blessed us.

Later in the day, once again the door shut behind us, but this time it was a click rather than a clank. Rather than a prison door, it was the front door of the presidential palace, as we were ushered in to meet with the President of Paraguay, who received us warmly.

As we sat around the President's dining room table, once again I brought greetings from the American Bible Society and once again we shared the importance of God's Word. As I pulled a Bible from my coat pocket, I handed it to him and said, "Mr. President, this book can change the lives of your people, can change your country and change the world."

In a prison cell or in a palace, with a prisoner or with a president, the message of God's Word is always the same.

How has God revealed the power of His Word to you in unexpected circumstances?

SIN'S DECEITFULNESS
Topic: Hebrews 3:12-13

"See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness." (Hebrews 3:12-13)

Have you started to believe the lies of our sinful world?

Sin lies to us saying there is an easier way; we deserve better; it's not going to hurt anyone; it won't matter just this once.

Romans 7:11 says,
"For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death."

We shouldn't be surprised by the deceitfulness of sin, because Jesus described Satan as the father of lies. "...there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." (John 8:44)

The Bible warns us repeatedly not to be deceived:

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. (Ephesians 5:6)

I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. (Colossians 2:4)

Don't be deceived, my dear brothers. (James 1: 16)

Attitudes that glorify self entice us; behaviors that bring instant gratification appeal to us, but they are deceitful. They promise things that they cannot deliver.

True joy, fulfillment, and acceptance can only be found in Christ. Thus we need to be grounded in the truth in order to withstand the lies of Satan.

~ Holy God, help me to be self-controlled and alert because I know the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8) Open my eyes to the lies that Satan tells, so that I will not be deceived.

What is an example of a lie that you have believed? What truth from God's Word do you need to replace it with?

JEHOVAH-MEKADESHKEM; THE LORD WHO SANCTIFIES
Topic: Exodus 31:13
"Say to the Israelites, 'You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy" (Exodus 31:13).

Doesn't it encourage you to know that God is committed to our journey and desires to keep drawing us onward in knowing Him!

He searches our hearts and minds in order to refine us and teach us. Those niggling thoughts of things you need to let go of in your life is His call to you to journey forward. He instructs us and inspires us so that we will be encouraged as we go. We do not walk alone and He calls us to listen as He leads. He tests us and disciplines us. He humbles and exalts us yet He cannot work outside of His deep love for us ... and we know we can trust His goodness.

He is our God and our Father, the One God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. He is so big yet so concerned about the specifics of "me". Wow!

~Father God

You are the One who Sanctifies; You are at work making me holy. What a thought, Lord. I feel so far from holy yet You promise to refine me and teach me, to instruct me and inspire me.

Thank you that You never work apart from Your love for me. I trust Your goodness toward me even when I cannot understand it. Thank you that You are committed to my growth and my joy.

You are the One God who is over all and through all and in all. You are magnificent beyond my comprehension yet so loving and kind as You lead me on to blameless living, that is, living without rebellion in my heart. Show me today where any rebellion exists and help me to allow Your refining process to draw me upward and onward in complete trust in Your goodness.  In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

Do you trust God's goodness even when you don't understand it all? What do you do when doubt about God's goodness overwhelms you?

BE A FOOL
Topic: 1 Corinthians 3:18-23
In 1956, a small group of missionaries formed a plan to reach a tribe of people who called themselves the 'Huaorani' in the forests of Ecuador. This tribe was extremely hostile to outsiders, and the missionaries' only contact from the tribe warned them not to trust the Huaroani: "To you they might seem friendly for a while, but they will not stop short of killing." Nevertheless, the missionaries knew they had to try to reach these people.

Their plan involved air-dropping small gifts to the tribe, then setting up camp nearby and gradually gaining the tribespeoples' trust. Everything seemed to be working according to plan ... until one day all five missionaries were suddenly killed by the Huaorani. Due to their previous contact with outsiders, the Huaorani were intensely distrustful of the missionaries, and instinctively feared a trap.

Newspapers around the world reported the story, and some called the men foolish for trying to make contact with the tribe. A "waste of lives", some called it. But their work not only laid the foundation upon which later missionaries would be able to successfully share the gospel with the Huaorani, it also inspired hundreds of young people to volunteer to become missionaries themselves. (Adapted from Jesus Freaks Volume II, by DC Talk)

Paul writes that "the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight" (1 Corinthians 3:19) The world will not understand the selfless devotion felt toward the God who has saved us, and may even call us foolish or persecute us for living first and foremost for God. Jesus explains that "They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me." (John 15:21) When the world thinks it is wise, it is really foolish for ignoring God who is the source of all wisdom.

This April Fool's Day, let's renew our commitment to knowing and living the gospel so that we can more winsomely witness to others, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." (1 Corinthians 1:18)

In what way(s) could you ask God to make you a more winsome witness?

OUR TEXTBOOK
Topic: OUR TEXTBOOK
The Bible is the most important book in existence. It is the guidebook and the textbook of life. People who think it's like any other book just don't know the author. Once they know the author, then suddenly this book takes on a different perspective.

All Scripture is given by inspiration from God. It is perfect for teaching, reproving, correcting, and instructing so that the person of God will be complete (lacking nothing) and thoroughly equipped (remember, lacking nothing) for every good work.

There is no God-given desire or assignment for which He will not entirely equip you. And there is absolutely no situation you can encounter or circumstance you can experience for which you cannot find guidance in God's Word.

This book was authored by omniscience, that is, by our all-knowing God. Yet He summarized His revelation of Himself to us within the pages of this relatively tiny book.

Your prestige, prominence, position, and pocketbook may be of value today, but what will all of that do for you when you're dying? The Bible is good enough to live by and good enough to die by. And if your philosophy of life isn't good enough for both, then you need to dump it, meet the author of the Bible, accept Christ as your Savior, and delve into His textbook.

Which area(s) of the Bible have you (and Christians in general) often ignored? Why, and how can we begin to better study these neglected areas?

NOT JUST WITH OUR MOUTHS
Quick, what do you remember about Jonah?

Did you think of the whale? So did I. But after re-reading the book of Jonah, I realized the whale is one of the least important parts of the story.

Please read Jonah 1 now.

In verse 9 Jonah says "I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land." But does he really mean what he says? Let's review:

- Jonah hears a direct, specific call from God, yet flees in the opposite direction (v1-3)

- He sleeps through a violent storm, oblivious to the safety of his fellow travelers (v5)

- Even though the sailors exhort him to pray, there's no evidence that he does (v6)

- He refuses to admit wrongdoing, even when the lot falls on him (v7-10)

- Rather than praying and/or repenting, he asks to die by being thrown into the sea (v12)

Why did Jonah act this way? Maybe he became prideful. He was a Hebrew, chosen as a prophet of God. Perhaps he thought that because he had knowledge of God, that he knew God. But while Jonah ignored the vast knowledge he had of God, the sailors responded to the little knowledge they had and "greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him." (Jonah 1:16)

Jonah claimed to "worship the LORD" but his actions speak louder than his words. Merely saying we "have faith", speaking the words with our mouths, is empty unless the words permeate our hearts. The apostle Paul said "If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9)

Meditate on the apostle John's words: "If someone claims, "I know God," but doesn't obey God's commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. But those who obey God's word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did." (1 John 2:3-6)

OVERCOMING FAILURE
Topic: Romans 7:15 - 20
Victory is God's will for the believer's life. But sometimes we can find ourselves falling repeatedly into the same sin. As a result, our prayer life is marked by broken promises to end wrongdoing. We tell the Lord that we yearn to do what is right, but often our desire wanes when virtue is no longer convenient, pleasurable, or profitable. Many believers become angry with God for withholding victory, but sin is always our choice, not the Lord's.

If a stinging conscience and misery are the result of our decision to sin, why do we continue in wrongdoing? One reason is incomplete repentance. It is possible for us to experience grief, embarrassment, and shame over sin without being truly repentant. The reason is that penitence isn't a matter of weeping or feeling guilty; rather, true repentance is a change of mind about sin so that we agree with God's viewpoint. Then the heart turns in a new direction, opposite from persistent wrongdoing.

The second reason for failure is an inadequate view of our true identity in the Lord. The believer, as a complete child of God, has Christ living within to empower him. When we grasp this truth, we will recognize that sin does not fit who we are and will stop rationalizing our offenses. Our genuine repentance is based upon an honest understanding of our identity.

When we put these two truths together, a powerful tool against Satan and temptation is created. Our Father wants us to be victorious, and we triumph over failure when we remember that Jesus Christ is our life.

How has your faith sustained you during past failures, or successes?

PRAISE YE THE LORD
Topic: Psalm 150:6
The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. (Westminster Catechism)

Do you realize that if you stop right now and worship God - think about Him, marvel at His attributes, call His name holy, let your heart burst into song, lift your hands, dance... whatever you want - you will be fulfilling the prime reason for your existence? What could be better (or easier)? And on top of that, you have the assurance that your offering is joyfully received.

We were created to worship - to notice the song of the birds, to catch the shape of the clouds, to feel the penetrating heat of the day, to observe the twist of the lips that makes one smile different from another, to catch a drop of rain on the tongue, to hear a humming bird hum, to taste the sweetness of an orange and notice its color - these are far and away the most important observations we can make. And look at how accessible these are!

What we're talking about here is living with an attitude of praise. Anyone can do it - rich or poor, new Christian or old, healthy or sick - we can all unclutter our lives by arranging everything around God and the celebration of why we are here. Nature is doing it unconsciously. Children do it most easily. We need a little instruction - a little prodding - only because we get distracted and we forget.

Outside my window right now is a tree unlike any I have ever seen. It grows out as much as it grows up. Its branches defy gravity, growing horizontally for 20 feet or more before shooting up with heavy branches, as if held up by an invisible hand. This one tree provides shade for five houses. Cut it back and it keeps growing. New shoots are everywhere. What is this tree doing right now? Praising God. It can't help it. It is old and wise and sturdy, yet still putting out new life. It is a living monument to its Creator. God thought this tree into existence and put it here, years ago, for his pleasure and mine. He and I share this tree together. And when it flowers, the buzzing of a thousand bees can be heard in the early morning quietness. It's our tree throbbing with audible praise.

We can do it too. And even more so, because we have mind and heart and body, soul and spirit. We can hum our thanks to our creator with words and meaning, for we were made for this, and we are restless souls without it. Let everything that has breath (and even that which does not) praise the Lord! Praise ye the Lord!

What is your favorite way to give the Lord praise?

PRAYER TO THE ONE WHO IS HERE
Topic: Deuteronomy 31:8
The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. (Deuteronomy 31:8)

Every week I meet with a small group of friends from my church. We study a passage or chapter of the Bible, play games, cook food, or just hang out. But we always pray together, and this is a wonderful time of fellowship and encouragement for which I am truly greatful.

But I have to admit praying sometimes makes me uncomfortable. I've never been totally comfortable praying. Recently as I sat praying with my small group, my mind started to wander, and I started to think about what prayer means. I know it means "talking to God" but I was hoping for some deeper understanding.

Suddenly a verse suddenly popped into my mind: "For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." (Matthew 18:20)

I had an out-of-the-blue understanding of a simple yet profound truth: When we pray, we must pray as though God is right here with us ... because God IS right here with us!

We need to speak to God as though Jesus were standing in front of us, hanging on every word ... because HE IS!

When we pray our words are not dispersing into the air; they are being heard by God, whose Spirit lives within us (1 Corinthians 3:16) and who hears us because He is with us, not as a vague spirit but as a living person.

Jesus promises that when you pray he is right here with you. Not only that, He promised that He is "with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:20) When we pray, let's speak to the One who "will never leave you nor forsake you", as though He is right there with you ... because HE IS!

Are your prayers sometimes abstract and generic? How could keeping in mind God's presence with you help keep them personal and specific?

EXPRESSIVE FAITH
Topic: Galatians 5:6
The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. (Galatians 5:6)

Tasks we do, ideas we discuss, thoughts we ponder, events in which we take part are innumerable, but there is only one thing in life that counts, one thing that truly matters.

Faith in God is that key element. But it is not an inactive faith. It is faith that responds with action; faith expressed by love.

As James puts it, "In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by actions, is dead." (James 2:17)

Thus, expressive faith is one in which belief in Jesus for salvation is translated into loving actions toward God and all mankind.

What does faith expressed through love look like?

The best description I have found for faith lived out in love is Jesus' parable of the sheep and the goats at the end of the age. Listen to His description of those who are His sheep.

"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me." (Matthew 25:35, 36)

When His followers were confused about when they did these things for Him, the King explains, "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." (Matthew 25:40)

Today, let's express our faith in God by doing these very things for the least and the lonely and the forgotten who surround us.

~God, help me to remember that the only thing that counts is faith expressed by love. Show me today how to put my faith into action.

What are some simple examples of how we can daily express our faith through love? What prevents us from loving actions? Is it our lack of faith?

A LEGACY OF GRASS
Topic: Matthew 5:16
Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)

If you are like me, sometimes you think about why you are where you are, what will you do while you are there and perhaps most importantly, what others will think of you after you are gone. It's called a legacy ... what you leave behind.

Some people think of a legacy in monetary or tangible measurement, but the greatest legacy we can give is an intangible one and all of us want to know that when we are gone people will remember us fondly and positively.

Last year, the Florida Senate decided to dress up the Senate Office Building with photographs depicting its history and heritage by displaying action photographs of senators who previously served in office and making sure that there was at least one photograph of each senator.

It's been interesting to see these reminders of days gone by, especially for me, as I have been there in one role or another for over forty years and I knew, recognized or served with most of those who got their mug hung on the wall.

There were dozens of photographs and I didn't see mine at first, though several people commented and laughed about my portrait legacy. I just had to find it, so I went on a photo hunt, up one hall and down another searching floor by floor.

Then, as I rounded a corner, I saw my face big as life, seated at the dais behind a microphone, pointing my finger and holding a large bag of ..... marijuana! I remember the day it happened. I was chairing a meeting of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee, of which I was Chairman and wanted to make a point about the proliferation of marijuana in the state, so I asked the police to go to the evidence room and bring a supply for me to use at the meeting. They did and there I am, forever hanging in the state capitol holding a bag of grass!

Years after I am dead and gone school children will tour the capitol and ask: "Who's the guy holding the grass?" I guess that's my enduring legacy from public service.

Have you ever thought about what kind of legacy you will leave, what people will remember you for or say about you after you are dead and gone? Will they know what you believed in or what you stood for?

Jesus told us to let our light shine before men, that they may see our good deeds and praise our Father in heaven. Live you life so that your life may continue to live after you no longer do.

Are you letting your light shine? What wattage of bulb is screwed into the socket of your life?
