Saving Troubled Friendships
Topic: Matthew 5:23-24

When we develop friendships, we intend for them to last. But since two fallen human beings are involved, occasional hurt feelings and unmet expectations are likely. If one or both people simply ignore the offense, the relationship can be damaged.

Repairing a troubled friendship requires humility to admit our faults, effort to fix the problem, and time. But the reward is a renewed connection with a valued companion. The process of saving a friendship begins when you acknowledge that damage exists. This takes place the moment you say, "I feel something isn't right in our relationship. I'd like for us to find and fix the problem."

It's helpful to work together to assess how the trouble began. Perhaps it resulted from a misunderstanding, an unresolved conflict, or one person's busyness. After recognizing the problem, apologize for your part in it. Taking responsibility and saying "I'm sorry" shows your love and commitment to the friendship. Remember that an essential aspect of apologizing is refusing to justify wrong actions or blame others.

An apology must be followed up with amends. Ask your friend what specific action you both can take to rebuild the relationship. Then commit to follow his or her suggestion while occasionally asking, "How am I doing?"

Rather than waiting until their relationship is in trouble, wise friends will go through these steps as soon as they're aware of having hurt a loved one. Preventative care can soothe minor scrapes before they become serious wounds.

HUNGER AND THIRST
Topic: Romans 10:6-10

"Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled" (Matthew 5:6, KJV)

Do you hunger and thirst after righteousness, for the fullness and power of the Holy Spirit in your life? If so, you can claim that fullness and power right now by faith.

"The great difference between present - day Christianity and that of which we read in these letters (New Testament epistles)," declared J.B. Phillips in his introduction to the Letters to Young churches, "is that to us it is primarily a performance; to them it was a real experience. We are apt to reduce the Christian religion to a code, or, at best, a rule of heart and life. To these men it is quite plainly the invasion of their lives by a new quality of life altogether. They do not hesitate to describe this as Christ living in them."

The disciples were used of God to change the course of history. As Christian homemakers, students, businessmen and professionals, we have that same potential and privilege today.

The amazing fact that Jesus Christ lives in us and expresses His love through us is one of the most important truths in the Word of God. The standards of the Christian life are so high and so impossible to achieve, according to the Word of God, that only one person has been able to succeed. That person is Jesus Christ.

When we receive Christ into our lives, we experience a new birth and are also indwelt by the Holy Spirit. From that point on, everything we need - including wisdom, love, power - to be men and women of God and fruitful witnesses for Christ is available to us simply by faith, by claiming this power in accordance with God's promise.

"Dear Lord, create within me a hunger and thirst after righteousness that is greater than my hunger and thirst for meat and drink for my physical body. By faith I claim the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit to enable me to live a victorious, fruitful life to the glory of God and to share this good news of the Spirit - filled life with everyone who will listen."

The Justice of Divine Judgment
Topic: Revelation 20-11:15

Every person will face God on judgment day. Whenever that topic comes up, I am usually asked something like, "What about remote African tribes that will never hear about Jesus?" The concerned questioner is really wondering, How could a loving Lord send an ignorant person to hell? In other words, How can it be fair to condemn those who have never heard the gospel?

To understand how God judges, we should recognize two truths about Him. First, He's not limited. While whole groups still have no Scripture in their language, God always reaches individuals whose hearts are open to knowing Him. Men like Abraham and Moses had no spiritual training or Scriptures, and the Lord spoke to them.

Second, God reveals Himself to all people, whether or not they have access to the Bible. He demonstrates His power and attributes through creation. He also programs our conscience to understand the basic distinctions between right and wrong.

For those blessed to hear the gospel at some point, Jesus Christ is the greatest revelation of God in their life. When people stand before the Father, He'll judge them on three criteria from the amount of truth that each has been exposed, to how many opportunities there were to accept the truth and share it with others; and what was done with those opportunities. The believer's responsibility is to reach as many as possible with the gospel so that no one need ask, "What about those who've never heard of Jesus?"

Those who have never heard
Topic: Romans 1:18-25

In many countries, the gospel can't be shared freely. Repressive governments and religions stop Christians from telling others about Jesus. However, God is mightier than oppression. Where human messengers can't carry the good news, the Lord is revealing Himself to those whose hearts are open.

First Timothy chapter two says God wants everyone to come to a saving knowledge of Him. Romans chapter 1 shows He is holy and just, but He can't overlook man's sinful condition, which renders all guilty and without excuse. He will not admit people into heaven unless they've acknowledged their need for a Savior.

But, our Father is also fair and merciful. He makes His presence known to every person so each one may choose to recognize His sovereignty. The Lord does this by revealing Himself to all mankind in two ways: through conscience and creation.

First, He has imbedded His basic moral guidelines in the human conscience. In other words, at some point in life, every sane person has an innate sense that certain actions are right and others are wrong.

Second, the Creator displays His power and divine nature through what He has made. The complexity, variety, order, and beauty of the world all point to an intelligent Designer. We can't pinpoint every method the Lord uses to reveal Himself. Yet we can be sure nothing will stop Him from reaching out to people who follow conscience and creation to the logical conclusion... the existence of a loving, sovereign God.

BEHOLD THE LORD JESUS
Topic: Colossians 2:9-10

"For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority." (Colossians 2:9, 10)

All the attributes of Christ, as God and man, are at our disposal. All the fullness of the Godhead, whatever that marvelous term may comprehend, is ours to make us complete. He cannot endow us with the attributes of Deity; but He has done all that can be done, for He has made even His divine power and Godhead subservient to our salvation. His omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence, immutability and infallibility, are all combined for our defense.

Arise, believer, and behold the Lord Jesus yoking the whole of His divine Godhead to the chariot of salvation! How vast His grace, how firm His faithfulness, how unswerving His immutability, how infinite His power, how limitless His knowledge! All these are by the Lord Jesus made the pillars of the temple of salvation; and all, without diminution of their infinity, are covenanted to us as our perpetual inheritance. The fathomless love of the Saviour's heart is every drop of it ours; every sinew in the arm of might, every jewel in the crown of majesty, the immensity of divine knowledge, and the sternness of divine justice, all are ours, and shall be employed for us. The whole of Christ, in His adorable character as the Son of God, is by Himself made over to us most richly to enjoy.

His wisdom is our direction, His knowledge our instruction, His power our protection, His justice our surety, His love our comfort, His mercy our solace, and His immutability our trust. He makes no reserve, but opens the recesses of the Mount of God and bids us dig in its mines for the hidden treasures. "All, all, all are yours," saith He, "be ye satisfied with favor and full of the goodness of the Lord." Oh! how sweet thus to behold Jesus, and to call upon Him with the certain confidence that in seeking the interposition of His love or power, we are but asking for that which He has already faithfully promised.

Which of God's glorious attributes will you hold fast to today?

The Nature of Strength
Topic: Ephesians 6:10-13

The moment a person receives Christ as Savior, he or she enters a battle. The Enemy is determined to destroy believers' testimonies. But God has supplied a mighty weapon to those who serve Him... His Son's strength flowing through their life.

Christ's power is supreme. Satan, with all his demonic force, can't throw anything our way to match Jesus' supernatural strength. Even so, temptations and trials expose weaknesses when most would prefer to appear strong. That is one reason human nature rebels against hardship and tries to avoid it.

God wants Christian soldiers to be armed with the Savior's might so they can confront life's difficulties. 2 Corinthians 12 says he promises us strength only when we set down pride and accept that we are too weak for battle. And Jesus' power is available to every believer right now. It's a gift from the Commander so that His followers can endure conflicts victoriously.

The world encourages keeping up the appearance of handling one's own problems. So, Christian soldiers' marching orders probably seem quite strange to onlookers. But, arrogance does not bring blessing; rather, it causes confusion, distance from the Lord, and ultimately failure. If we want to be victorious, then we must not follow the worldly strategy of facing the Enemy alone.

Until our life is over or Jesus Christ returns, we are locked in a battle with Satan. But God has given us a powerful weapon. When we are totally dependent upon the Lord for His strength, we are filled with supernatural energy and endurance.

Eliminating Doubt
Topic: Matthew 21:20-22

As we mature spiritually, we become more solidly rooted in the confidence that God is faithful. But sometimes doubt will creep in and wither our trust. In order not to lose ground, we must act decisively to reduce misgivings. Here are three steps we should take:

First, recall God's past faithfulness, and remember His promises. When we devote time to thanking Him for His intervention in prior situations, we are reminded of His love and provision. Meditating on promises from Scripture also reassures us that He will continue to meet every need. For example, Psalm 41:12 says the Father is always present with His children, And John chapter 16 says His Holy Spirit was given to us for strength and direction.

Next, water your growing faith with God's Word. When you ask for scriptural guidance, the Lord will direct you to passages that relate to your situation and offer needed emotional and spiritual assurance. Spend time meditating on those verses, prayerfully considering how to apply the message to your circumstances.

And lastly, choose to believe God and His promises. He has proven Himself faithful from the first moment of creation to the present. We are wise to place our confidence in Him.

Developing a sturdy, well-rooted faith requires we cooperate with the Lord. Our human nature complicates matters by making us vulnerable to doubt. But when we choose to trust God, uncertainty cannot shrink our faith.

Strength Beyond Self
Topic: 2 Corinthians 1:8-11
"Into every life a little rain must fall." So goes the familiar saying about the inevitability of hardship. But what if the rain turns into a torrential downpour like a life challenge that requires strength beyond what is humanly possible? The apostle Paul describes such a situation in his letter to the Corinthians. He wrote of an affliction that weighed so heavily on his heart and body that he didn't expect to survive.

Paul's approach to his problem, found in 2 Corinthians 1, still works today: "We would not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead... and will deliver us". The strength that we need during trials is available through Jesus Christ, whose supernatural energy flows through every believer's mind, body, and spirit.

How does this happen? John 14:17 says when someone receives Jesus as Savior, His Spirit comes to live inside the new believer. As a result of this "indwelling," the power that Christ demonstrated while on earth prevails in those who now call upon Him for aid. However, for us to access His supernatural strength, we must trust His promise to supply what we need when we need it. As long as we attempt to muddle through using our own abilities, we will prevent His Spirit from unleashing divine help.

Jesus Christ's power is unleashed in our life when we acknowledge our helplessness. The effect is immediate. As soon as we surrender to the Lord, His might is working inside us so we can endure hardship while maintaining our joy and peace.

NOTHING YOU CANNOT DO
Topic: Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me. (Philippians 4:13, KJV)

What would you give for the power to live a truly holy, fruitful life? Strangely enough, it is yours for the asking. If your problem is timidity in witnessing, God promises to help you share your faith with others: "For the Holy Spirit, God's gift, does not want you to be afraid of people, but to be wise and strong, and to love them and enjoy being with them" (2 Timothy 1:7).

If it is victory over temptation, He reminds us that temptation is not a sin; it is only in the yielding that it becomes sin.

If you need victory in your thought - life, He promises to allow no tempting or testing above that you are able to bear - and that certainly includes your thought - life (1 Corinthians 10:13). You are invited to "cast all your anxiety upon the Lord, because He cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7).

If it is forgiveness you seek, He offers it freely. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9, KJV).

In short, you have no burden, no problem, no need that is too big for our Lord to handle. "Ye receive not, because ye ask not," He reminds us.

If your need is for physical healing, know that He is able to heal you if it is His will. If His answer to your prayer is no, thank Him for the sure knowledge that His grace is sufficient in the midst of pain and suffering. Acknowledge His sovereign right to be God in your life, whatever the cost may be. "Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust Him to help you do it and He will" (Psalm 37:5).

I will begin this day - and every day - by committing everything I do to the Lord and expecting Him to help me. I will remember that I can do everything God asks me to do with the help of Christ, who gives me the strength and power (Philippians 4:13).

When Our Faith Wavers
Topic: James 1:1-8

The Bible warns against "wavering faith." This is the attitude of someone who goes from feeling certain that God will answer a prayer to merely hoping that He might or becoming convinced He won't. Of course, since we're human, we all experience periods of doubt. But what Scripture warns against is a lifestyle of spiritual disbelief.

Wavering can have many causes. For instance, one might fail to see God at work in a situation. Or he might worry that trusting Jesus in that predicament conflicts with human reasoning. Another believer, focusing on circumstances rather than the Lord, may allow feelings to overcome faith.

A person, who is "driven and tossed by the wind", may lose confidence in God and find his spiritual growth stunted. He can become a "double-minded man" because even as he prays, he tends to jump ahead of the Lord's timing to manipulate a situation for his own desired outcome. When a Christian pays attention to his doubts in this way, he'll often make costly, wrong decisions. After all the maneuvering, he will frequently end up dissatisfied with the results and bothered by his lack of peace. Even worse, his faith may diminish.

Wavering is dangerous, so believers must develop confidence in the Lord. In Mark 11:24, Jesus says, "All things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you." The closest we get to perfect faith while on earth is the ability to trust that what we ask in God's will is as good as done.

UNDER THE CRUD LIES A MASTERPIECE
Topic: Psalm 80:3
Restore us, O God; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved. (Psalm 80:3)

Back in college I remember studying it as one of the great art works of all time and more recently, it has been on everyone's mind with all the hype about the Da Vinci Code. Everyone is talking about it. Indeed, Da Vinci's Last Supper has become one of the most widely appreciated masterpieces in the world. It began to acquire its unique reputation immediately after it was finished in 1498 and its prestige has never diminished. Despite the many changes in tastes, artistic styles, and rapid physical deterioration of the painting itself, the painting's status as an extraordinary creation has never been questioned nor doubted, and now I was standing in front of all of its beauty.

Indeed, it is a great work of art, but the perfection of this work lies not only in the artistic merits of the painting, but also in Leonardo's expressive mastery. Leonardo's Last Supper is an ideal pictorial representation of the most important event in the Christian doctrine of salvation - the institution of the Eucharist. No other painting of a Christian subject dominates our imagination with the same power of Da Vinci's Last Supper. When thoughts turn to the Last Supper, we seem to see only Leonardo's representation before us. Standing there, I felt as if I was taking part in the supper.

Leonardo Da Vinci was already a well known artist when he created his masterpiece The Last Supper. He painted it on the back wall of the dining hall at the Dominican convent of Sta Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. The reason the painting is laid out the way it is that Leonardo was trying to "extend the room" to make it look like Jesus and his apostles were sitting at the end of the dining hall. He painted it not to create a great work of art, but to simply decorate a room, but his work achieved so much more and is clearly inextricably intertwined with the great message of salvation.

Over the years, the elements took their toll and by the late 20th century, the painting was hardly recognizable. It had become covered with all sorts of things, including improper methods applied to preserve it and a bombing in World War II. So, beginning in 1979 and lasting for twenty years, efforts were made to once again bring the painting to life and in 1999, the dining hall in Milan was once again open for public viewing.

As I stood there taking it all in, I could only think of the parallels to the human life. Over time we become covered with the junk and pollution of the world, our beauty is covered and we fail to be the shining light God intended us to be.

But the good news is that, like the great painting, we too can be restored. The garbage that covers us can be washed away by the hand of God and we too can be restored to glory.  The psalmist cried out "Restore us, O God; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved." We too can reach out to God and see his face shine upon us and we too can be restored and saved.

What is your favorite part of nature? How does it reveal God's glory to you?

CARRY THE LIGHT
Every Christian has an inescapable missionary obligation. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus called us the light of the world. (Matthew 5:14) As its base purpose, light illuminates. We are to illuminate Christ to the rest of the world.

The apostle Paul said he was indebted to share the Gospel. He was indebted to Christ, not because Christ demanded a repaid debt but because Paul overflowed with gratitude and love for Christ?s free gift of eternal life. Paul also indicated that we are indebted to the Christian forerunners who laid the groundwork for the Gospel to reach our ears.

But what does it mean that each of us has an inescapable missionary obligation? It means that God expects every believer to help spread the good news of His saving grace. It does not necessarily mean you are to trade your home for a bamboo hut in a jungle halfway around the world, although it could.

There are many ways for believers to participate in missions. You can give of your time, talent, and treasure. Perhaps you can volunteer for a two - week mission trip; or maybe you can consistently pray for a particular missionary effort or missionary friend; and most everyone can sacrificially give to missions. Sometimes the greatest mission work is done without ever leaving your home.

How are we indebted to share the Gospel?

FIRST FISH
Topic: Matthew 4:19
I took Chandler for his first camping trip this week to say good-by to summer and give him a great send-off for his first day of Kindergarten. We ended up with an empty campsite to ourselves, and an all-around great experience that included catching his first fish. It was a nice fat rainbow trout that would have cooked up beautifully had we kept it.

Now the whole time leading up to this moment, he had talked of nothing but bringing a couple fish home for dinner, but the one thing Chandler hadn't counted on was the fact that eating a fish means it has to die first. There was no way he could have been prepared for the reality of seeing a fish flop around gasping for water. I even had it on ice for a moment when Chandler announced he didn't want to take it home; he wanted to put it back in the water. So I quickly threw it back in, and for a moment it floated upside down, and then flipped itself over and swam away.

So somewhere in the Kern River, or maybe in Lake Isabella by now, is a very lucky rainbow trout that has seen the inside of an ice chest and lived to tell about it.

When Jesus told Peter he was going to fish for men instead of fish, His disciples were used to a different style of fishing. They primarily used nets to capture a number of fish and gather them in. Baiting a fish, deceiving it, hooking it, reeling it in, grasping it in your hands, pulling out the hook and throwing it in an ice chest were not a part of a fish's reality at the time.

I wonder how many people out there have been hooked by a Christian, reeled in, and still managed to escape and are swimming around in the world with a bad experience to tell about. We need to be sensitive to those who may have been the target of someone's witnessing campaign that did not come with the gentleness, love and respect that should underlie any missionary effort. Part of our mission among those who are not Christians may include undoing mistakes that have gone before.

Remember, Jesus was talking about gathering in a "catch." To do so, you throw your net in the water, hope and pray for fish, and pull it up. It's really up to God to put the fish there, as He did for Peter before Peter even met Him. We throw out the truth and gather in those who respond. There may be one or none. There may be more than we can haul in. That's up to God, not us.

Have you been "throwing out the net" lately? Who do you know that you can be praying for, that they would come to know God?

FORGETFUL OF JESUS
Topic: 1 Corinthians 11:24
"This do in remembrance of Me." (1 Corinthians 11:24)

It seems then, that Christians may forget Christ! There could be no need for this loving exhortation, if there were not a fearful supposition that our memories might prove treacherous. Nor is this a bare supposition: it is, alas! too well confirmed in our experience, not as a possibility, but as a lamentable fact. It appears almost impossible that those who have been redeemed by the blood of the dying Lamb, and loved with an everlasting love by the eternal Son of God, should forget that gracious Saviour; but, if startling to the ear, it is, alas! too apparent to the eye to allow us to deny the crime. Forget Him who never forgot us! Forget Him who poured His blood forth for our sins! Forget Him who loved us even to the death! Can it be possible? Yes, it is not only possible, but conscience confesses that it is too sadly a fault with all of us, that we suffer Him to be as a wayfaring man tarrying but for a night.

He whom we should make the abiding tenant of our memories is but a visitor therein. The cross where one would think that memory would linger, and unmindfulness would be an unknown intruder, is desecrated by the feet of forgetfulness.

Does not your conscience say that this is true? Do you not find yourselves forgetful of Jesus? Some creature steals away your heart, and you are unmindful of Him upon whom your affection ought to be set. Some earthly business engrosses your attention when you should fix your eye steadily upon the cross. It is the incessant turmoil of the world, the constant attraction of earthly things which takes away the soul from Christ. While memory too well preserves a poisonous weed, it suffereth the rose of Sharon to wither. Let us charge ourselves to bind a heavenly forget-me-not about our hearts for Jesus our Beloved, and, whatever else we let slip, let us hold fast to Him.

What are some of life's distractions that cause us to "forget" Jesus, if only briefly?

CHILDREN OF LIGHT
Topic: Ephesians 5:8-14
I love this time of year, when the days are getting longer. We seem to appreciate daylight more after months of darkness. The light gives me more energy in the morning; enables me to see clearly to accomplish my tasks; provides pleasure by allowing me to enjoy outdoor activities into the evening.

As the sun gives us light, so we are to be light.

No longer are we trapped in darkness; no longer do we live fruitless or shameful lives. Instead we are children of light.

Therefore, the Bible summons us to live in accordance with that incredible truth.

First of all, we are to live fruitful lives. The fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth. We are to be beacons of truth and lamps of goodness, shining righteousness to everyone.

The second part of our calling comes as a natural byproduct of the first. When we live righteous and holy lives in this dark world, evil will be exposed.

It is not easy to do what is right when others choose compromise, nor do we like to be exposed. Thus living as children of light will be a difficult road.

Yet, because God calls us to live as children of light, we can trust Him to give us the grace and strength to carry out this purpose.

Give examples from your life (or from those who have mentored you) of being a beacon of truth. How have you seen your life go from fruitless to fruitful as you live as a child of light?

LACK OF FAITH IN THE FUTURE
Topic: John 10:10
I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to men.  All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this book. - Abraham Lincoln

The headline read: "Survey: Floridians expect life to be worse in five years; no faith in governments to control growth, immigration, cost of living." The article caught my eye as I was scanning the headlines. Two things caught my attention, a feeling of gloom and a lack of faith. It occurred to me that the two sort of go together.

The article noted that people like living in Florida even as they grow pessimistic about the future. That summed up a survey Leadership Florida conducted that polled 1,200 people throughout the state on a range of issues.

A majority said that government has a role to make life better, but a majority also said it is doing a poor job. Strangely, even though a majority said that Florida will be a worse place to live in five years, they still would recommend a friend move to the state.

People surveyed found fault with everything from immigration to education. Respondents also rated homeowners' insurance rates, health care, affordable housing and growth management as other top concerns, but expressed little confidence in government efforts to improve those situations.

Author Gregg Easterbrook has written a best selling book entitled The Progress Paradox, which notes that living standards keep rising, yet people are no happier as a result. What does this paradox tell us about ourselves and our future?

Perhaps it says that we have our comfort index hitched to the wrong wagon. Maybe we are looking for all the wrong things in all the wrong places. Madison Avenue spends billions to get us to spend more to have more. We are encouraged to "keep up with the Jones's, but once we get there, the Jones's refinance and we have to run to catch up.

People today live in finer homes, drive finer cars, eat finer food and yet, somehow, they are basically unhappy. Maybe the answer is to turn to the Bible rather than conventional advertising to make our shopping list.

Jesus said: "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly" (John 10:10)..... superabundance, excessive, overflowing, surplus, over and above, more than enough, profuse, extraordinary, above the ordinary, more than sufficient.

As you give your total self to God, God gives His total self to you. That is the supreme message of the Bible. This is Bible based joy, the real possibility of health for your total being (body, mind, emotions, relationships), of your material needs being met. Above all, His prosperity brings eternal life. Stop to think about it. What else is there worth having?

As a Christian, what is your prognosis for the future? Really we know not what the future holds, but for the Christian, we know who holds the future and with that assurance, we can have the greatest of optimism.

How do you conceive of the future, both imminent and far-off?

EVERY MOVE YOU MAKE
Topic: Proverbs 5:21
"Mark well that God doesn't miss a move you make; he's aware of every step you take." (Proverbs 5:21, Msg)

The 21st verse of Proverbs 5 has a chameleon quality to it: the way you see the verse is colored by the circumstances you find yourself in.

The verse is good news to me if I'm where I think God wants me to be; giving me energy to do what God wants me to do.

But for all of us there are times when the words, "He's aware of every step you take," might make us a bit nervous.

There are times when we think, "Lord, could you look somewhere else right now?" This verse then has the feel of, "He knows if you've been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake!"

The truth is -- God is always there. He knows everything we've done and everything we're doing and everything we're going to do. On hearing this some feel massive guilt -- and spend the rest of their lives trying to escape God's "watchful eye."

Great news today! You don't have to live with that burden!! God is a forgiving and loving God!!!

The fact that he sees everything I do shows me how important my life really is. He does not watch me to condemn me, he watches me to love and strengthen me.

Live your life today with the knowledge that even if no one else notices, God does. Even when no one else understands, God does. Even when no one else cares, God certainly does.

God is always watching -- because he loves you.

BURNED-OUT ON RELIGION
Topic: Matthew 11:28-30

Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light." (Matthew 11:28-30, NLT)

Jesus might have asked: "Aren't you tired and burned-out on all that religious stuff? Look, come walk with me, and I'll help you recover your life -- your real purpose -- and even though it will require some hard, very hard work, you'll be energized by it because you'll be living life to its fullest. You'll be doing exactly what my Father created you to do, and more importantly, you'll be exactly who I want you to be."

In taking on the Jesus-yoke, he is asking us to join the school of Christ. In ancient times, when a student studied under a specific teacher, it would be said that the student took on the teacher's yoke; the student was yoked to the master.

Within that context, consider these words from Jesus: "Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light." (Matthew 11:29-30, NLT)

Jesus says, by walking with him, we'll learn how to walk with God. We don't learn from afar; we learn from a caring and committed teacher-student relationship -- caring and committed on both sides.

The Christian walk is not a lesson in how to run off doing things for Jesus while we ignore him. Our Christ-walk is a journey with Jesus, where he is very personal and specific about our growth and spiritual maturity.

What does this mean?

Are you tired? -- Jesus will teach you how to find rest in God, not a rest absent of stress, but the rest that results from believing in God's faithfulness. Ask God to show you what blocks you from believing fully in his faithfulness, and then ask him to break those blockages down.

Are you confused? -- Join Jesus at his school of Christ, and watch him, listen to him, ask him to renew your purpose.

Ask to be teachable -- Tell Jesus you want to be yoked to him, and that you want to learn from him. Ask him to keep your heart teachable.

The word "religion" originally meant re-connection with God. How does Jesus provide the ultimate reconnection with God?

PRAISING IN TROUBLED TIMES

Praise is a celebration of the Lord. But when trouble strikes, celebration seems out of place. The life of faith, though, is frequently contrary to normal human understanding. Jehoshaphat faced his difficulty by applauding God's past work and faithfulness, and by recalling His promises. When we respond in a similar way, we too, will be able to proceed with courage.

Self-pity is the natural human response to troubled times, and rehashing the details and repercussions of our situation only makes it seem more threatening. Praise focuses our attention on God instead. If we are looking to Him for aid, then we can't help but recognize His sovereignty. Every trial comes through His permissive will, which means He has complete control.

Whatever His reasons for allowing trouble into our life, He is faithful to see us through.

Recalling the Lord's gracious acts and focusing on His sovereignty in everyday life reminds us of our dependence upon Him. (vv. 7 - 12) Jehoshaphat expected God to intervene because recorded history showed His willingness to rescue His people. This recognition of Israel's helplessness unleashed God's full power. When believers try to solve problems independently of the Lord, He cannot work freely.

Our praise is limited only by our knowledge. The more we read and study the Bible, the better we understand God's many attributes and assurances. Then, when difficulty comes, we can celebrate His past faithfulness while awaiting His promised help.

Is our praise limited only by our knowledge? Can we have right knowledge, but still find it tough to praise God due to emotional barriers?

GOD?S GRACE THROUGH TRIALS
Topic: Acts 14:22

"We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God." (Acts 14:22)

God's people have their trials. It was never designed by God, when He chose His people, that they should be an untried people. They were chosen in the furnace of affliction; they were never chosen to worldly peace and earthly joy. Freedom from sickness and the pains of mortality was never promised them; but when their Lord drew up the charter of privileges, He included chastisements amongst the things to which they should inevitably be heirs. Trials are a part of our lot; they were predestinated for us in Christ's last legacy.

So surely as the stars are fashioned by his hands, and their orbits fixed by Him, so surely are our trials allotted to us: He has ordained their season and their place, their intensity and the effect they shall have upon us. Good men must never expect to escape troubles; if they do, they will be disappointed, for none of their predecessors have been without them. Mark the patience of Job; remember Abraham, for he had his trials, and by his faith under them, he became the "Father of the faithful." Note well the biographies of all the patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and you shall discover none of those whom God made vessels of mercy, who were not made to pass through the fire of affliction.

It is ordained of old that the cross of trouble should be engraved on every vessel of mercy, as the royal mark whereby the King's vessels of honour are distinguished. But although tribulation is thus the path of God's children, they have the comfort of knowing that their Master has traversed it before them; they have His presence and sympathy to cheer them, His grace to support them, and His example to teach them how to endure; and when they reach "the kingdom," it will more than make amends for the "much tribulation" through which they passed to enter it.

Even when we don't know why we are facing trials, how should we respond to them, in the way God wants us to?
