God's Master Plan of Finance
Topic: Proverbs 11:24-25
To meet our basic needs for food, shelter, and safety, we need a certain amount of money. But, few of us are satisfied with the basics. We want more. Earning the money for our desired lifestyle sounds like a reasonable idea. Cash needed for a new home, a nicer car, or an exciting vacation. As we grow older, we think about having a large retirement income. Even our national economy reflects the idea that more is better. But there's a problem. Living to maximize our wallets and provide for our future is a self-centered philosophy, not a God-centered one.

While the world's plan is based on accumulating, the Lord's plan is based on giving. He expects us to minimize what we keep and maximize what we give away. He provides us with possessions so we'll invest them in His kingdom work and be a blessing to others. We're the way He'll carry out His purposes.

Does denying self and having less money seem unreasonable? For some, this way of thinking is. But the opposite is true for God's children. Our heavenly Father's revealed the way to experience joy and peace. We must place His interests above our own and follow His ways. That includes obedient giving. Start today! Commit to align at least one part of your finances with His plan.

THE CHALLENGE
Topic: Philippians 1:12-14
Did Paul ever face feelings of discouragement? Yes. In 2 Corinthians 1:8, we read that the trials he faced were so horrendous that he thought he might lose his life. Paul learned to live above his circumstances, and you can too. Here is how he did it:

Focus on God and not the problem. As you deal with life's trials keep the eyes of your heart focused on Jesus Christ. He has the sovereign ability to handle whatever you are facing. When you relinquish control, God is free to work in a miraculous way.

Focus on the sovereignty of God and not on the will of man. Seeking the counsel of others always is a wise idea, and the Bible supports this. However, be sure what your friends tell you aligns with God's Word, which is your ultimate authority. Seek godly counsel from others but make sure that you do what King David did: He spent time alone with God in prayer. The Bible says he "sat before the Lord" (2 Samuel 7:18). God reveals Himself to those who seek His face.

Focus on positive results and not personal pain. No one enjoys hardship. However, when trials come ask the Lord to show you what He wants you to learn from the situation and how you can apply those lessons to your life. Paul lived above his circumstances because his focus was set on the Savior and not on the trial. As a result, he gained a tremendous victory.

Who do you turn to when you face discouragement? Who should you turn to, including both Jesus and His body of believers on Earth?

FINDING TIME TO PRAY
Topic: 1 Thessalonians 5:17
"Pray continually." 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Several years ago I felt motivated to expand my prayer life. My wife's family meets bimonthly to pray for concerns and we've seen the power of God at work. But some serious issues needed ongoing prayer. Since I already used my morning prayer time to pray for my immediate family, when could I pray for the extended family?

God showed me I could pray for my wife's family and my family on my commute to work and then during my ten-minute walk between the parking lot and office. All total, I found an extra hour to pray.

To help me remember to pray, I used visual cues. For example, my wife's niece and family live along my route to work, so I prayed for them as I drove past their neighborhood. Similarly, when I drove near a church plant where my children attend, I prayed for growth for their church.

Now I've retired and don't have a commute, so how can I pray more? I can pray whenever I do tasks that don't require my full concentration. And so could you. For example, pray while you run errands, exercise, or walk. Pray while doing household chores, yard work, or taking a shower. And for visual cues, pray for neighbors while walking to the mailbox. Pray for children and schools when passing schools. And pray for pastors and congregations when you drive by a church.

If we ask God, He will show us how to "pray continually." He knows our schedules and when we can pray more. He'll help us "pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests" so we can "be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints" (Ephesians 6:18).

Keeping a prayerful heart is a habit we can grow in. What is one way you could suggest to find more time to pray? Do you use visual aids to remind you to pray for specific people and situations?

When We Feel Lonely
Topic: Psalm 25:15-18

As believers, we have a Father who loves us. He desires the best for us. We're part of a large spiritual family with many brothers and sisters. But sometimes we still feel lonely. This can happen even when there's no major crisis in our lives.

Our greatest loneliness comes from a separation from the Father. This is a spiritual problem. The source is sin. We experience a break in our close fellowship with the Lord when we disobey Him and go our own way.

The remedy is confession. Confession leads to restored intimacy with God. If we refuse to admit our sin, the separation grows worse.

Busyness and preoccupation with earthly affairs also cause this isolation. Sometimes we push aside time with God to fulfill our obligations. We might focus so heavily on daily living that we ignore Him. To overcome loneliness, spend time reconnecting with God through His Word. Take in the knowledge of His deep, abiding love. Meditate on His great promises.

Being in harmony with God renews our purpose and energy for life causing that sense of isolation to lessen. Hope replaces discouragement. Our focus turns from "self" to others.

It's important to reconnect with people. So, look for opportunities to encourage, serve, love, and support those around you. Intimacy with the Lord is both the antidote to loneliness and protection from it.

THE SPIRITUAL BATTLE OF PRAYER

But why is prayer often so hard? Especially when the Holy Spirit will help us when we pray: "We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express." (Romans 8:26)

Prayer is a spiritual act, the most intimate communication between you and God. Since this communication occurs within the spiritual realm, we should be aware that demonic forces may be at work, attempting to frustrate our prayers. Paul explains: "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." (Ephesians 6:12)

Certainly demonic influence is not always the cause of ineffectual prayer (for example, part of the problem may be laziness or being distracted by worldly things) but we should be aware of the possibility of spiritual interference. How should we approach "spiritual forces of evil" as Paul calls them? C. S. Lewis wrote:

There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight. (C. S. Lewis, preface to The Screwtape Letters)

Jesus' death and resurrection has defeated Satan once and for all (Hebrews 2:14); therefore "we have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." (Hebrews 6:19) By being aware of Satan's evil influences and that he no longer has any power over our lives, we can proactively guard against spiritual evils. Be aware of the spiritual battles occurring, but do not be afraid, because Jesus, strong and mighty, is always with you.

Experiencing Loneliness
Topic: Acts 4:10-12

All of us feel alone from time to time. Sickness, a busy work schedule, or trying times can make it difficult to stay connected. Moving to a new location, job, or school can also bring a sense of isolation. Once this "season" passes or we adjust to the new place, the feeling goes away.

Loneliness is different from aloneness. Loneliness involves a sense of separation from people. Loneliness can intensify over time. We find it harder to reach out and easier to be alone.

When our mind starts telling us that no one's interested in us, we build a wall around our heart. We'll allow few people into our world. The more we withdraw; the worse we feel. Peace of mind eludes us. Loneliness weighs us down.

God never intended for us to live disconnected from one another. From the beginning, He purposed we should enjoy an intimate relationship with Him and each other.

First, He established a personal relationship with Adam. God then provided Adam with Eve. Genesis 2:18 shows our Creator knew it wasn't good for us to live in isolation.

Intimacy with God comes before intimacy with anyone else. In the absence of a personal relationship with Him, one is never truly at peace. The only way to be connected to the Father is by trusting Jesus as Savior. Those who place faith in Him receive a new nature. Those who place faith in Him become part of God's family and experience His peace. If you've never accepted Christ's invitation, you can pray right now to become God's child.

Living Out Our Faith
Topic: 1 Peter 1:6-9

True faith is based on Scripture. True faith embraces its eternal principles. Genuine belief knows God is who God says He is. Genuine trust means God will do everything He's promised. Such faith is worth sharing with others. This can be done in several ways.

We can verbally explain our beliefs on faith. We can also model a godly lifestyle. This is often a more effective way of influencing people for Christ. Spend time talking and listening about the ways God has worked in various situations in someone's life. Now imagine what God could do in your life.

Prayer can have a profound influence on someone's life. In those quiet moments, we learn to trust God when things look impossible. We also discover God is faithful. We can count on Him.

Consistency and perseverance are two other important parts of passing on our faith. Children look to see if we mean what we say. They want to see if we'll still rely on God when trouble comes. We can use our trials to demonstrate how a godly person responds. As we live out our faith in a visible way, we'll be passing on something far more valuable than gold or silver.

Where Do We Get It?

Billy Graham speaks about how to get righteousness:

I'm A Sinner

Franklin Graham speaks about the universal and personal need for Jesus:

How to Pass Down Our Faith
Topic: Deuteronomy 4:9

The most valuable "possession" believers can leave to family and friends is faith in Jesus Christ. While loved ones must choose to trust in the Savior, Christians can and should share key biblical truths with them.

Faith has many essential beliefs. The first found in Acts four is Salvation. Salvation is found only in Jesus Christ. From an early age, children should be taught the most important relationship in their life is with the Lord. Believing in Him and obeying Him is vital.

Next, our faith means we believe everything that exists was created by the Lord. He owns it all. We're managers of our resources, not owners. We're to invest in God's kingdom and not just spend on personal pleasures. His priorities are to become our own.

Another way we can pass down faith is by sharing God has a purpose for each of us. Ephesians 2:10 says discovering our purpose is very important. We can look for opportunities to share what we're learning about God's plan for our life. In the process, our family will become curious about what His purpose is for them.

Finally, as we pass on our faith, it's important to know God will provide whatever we need to carry out His plan. Our heavenly Father gives us talents and spiritual gifts to achieve His purposes. He has promised that we'll have what's necessary to live a life pleasing to Him.

The best time to share your faith is right now. Each day offers new opportunities to speak of our Savior. Think about those who you could pass along this precious possession to.

SECRET SERVICE
Topic: Matthew 6:2-4, NLT
"When you give a gift to someone in need, don't shout about it as the hypocrites do -- blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I assure you, they have received all the reward they will ever get. But when you give to someone, don't tell your left hand what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in secret, and your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you." Matthew 6:2-4, NLT

As purpose driven people, we should always be looking for opportunities to serve. Most of these opportunities come as we spontaneously respond to the needs of those around us. It can mean serving on a board or a committee, or signing up to serve in a soup kitchen or a homeless shelter -- there are many of these opportunities especially this time of year -- but an important part of being a servant is responding to the immediate needs of those around us. This is the type of service for which we rarely receive credit, which makes it even more authentic.

Servants don't expect thanks for what they do. I'm sure it's nice to hear it once in a while, but servants, when they serve, are just doing their job. If you find you need to be recognized for your service, you might want to take a second look at your motivation. True servants go about their work quietly and with little acknowledgement because they know their heavenly Father sees everything and their reward will come at the right time if they remain faithful.

A servant's satisfaction comes from watching what his or her service enabled. Maybe it's a homeless person's appreciation for a Thanksgiving meal, or the smile on the new neighbor's face when he or she is welcomed with a gift, or maybe it's simply a brightening awareness on someone's face that you are actually paying attention to his problem, taking his point of view seriously, and offering to help with a solution.

The truest kind of service is that which is anonymous. Jesus once said that when you give, don't let your right hand know what your left hand is doing. In other words, keep your giving as a secret even to yourself. Don't use your service for self-gratification. Serve and don't think twice about it. Move on to the next thing. God sees everything.

Saving Faith
Topic: John 1:12-13

Faith in Christianity involves several elements. Knowledge of who Jesus is and what He did must come from confidence. We need to know the facts are true and apply to us. We must start by realizing that I have broken God's law. That makes me a sinner. All of us are born with a rebellious nature against the Lord.

To save faith, we acknowledge none of our efforts can earn His favor. We also agree "Jesus died for me." He paid for all our sins, no matter how terrible they are in the world's eyes.

Next, we believe Jesus' death is sufficient payment for our wrongdoing. Nothing else is needed. We must accept He paid our penalty and endured the Father's wrath in our place.

Finally, we accept by faith that we've been adopted into God's family on the basis of Christ's (sorrowful) atoning death. The invitation is for the world, but not everyone has true conviction. Too many people see these facts as "information" rather than life-altering truths.

Once we're convinced Jesus is our Savior, trust is demonstrated through action.

As "new creatures," we're no longer who we once were. Second Corinthians 5:17 says there are different values and priorities for us to embrace. Jesus, our Lord, has authority over our lives. He alone deserves to be our top priority. He knows what pleases the Father. Jesus has sent His Spirit to live in us and teach us.

Take time to examine yourself for evidence of knowledge, conviction, and trust. If one area is lacking, ask the Father to help you come to true saving faith.

GOD's POWER
Topic: Ephesians 6:10
"Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power." Ephesians 6:10

Scientists at the University of Texas at Austin recently created what they call the Texas Petawatt, which they describe as "the highest powered laser in the world." This laser is brighter than the sunlight on the surface of the sun, albeit only for 1/10th of a trillionth of a second. I can only hope one of the scientists with a modicum of humor posted an "Aim away from face" sticker its vicinity.

Even as unfathomable to our minds as the power of this laser is, it is nothing compared to the power of the Lord, at whose mere word light and darkness themselves began to exist.

C. S. Lewis said "I believe in Christianity as I believe that the Sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else." God has given us His Son, Jesus Christ, who is "the light of the world" (John 9:5), so that those who follow Him can bask in His glorious light: "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word." (Hebrews 1:3)

Do you sometimes feel weak? Remember that the Holy Spirit dwells within you (John 14:17) and thus God has empowered you to mighty deeds. Ask God to unleash just a miniscule portion of His great power in your life; pray for strength, and the one who is infinitely strong will empower you. Pray and unleash God's power in your life!

"I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being" Ephesians 3:16

What It Means to Believe in Jesus
Topic: John 3:16-18

The apostle Paul, recorded in Acts 16, told his jailer, "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved." That Philippian man and his household had saving faith. They accepted the invitation and joined God's family.

Saving faith has three elements which are knowledge, conviction, and trust. The knowledge component means to believe in Jesus as our Savior, we need to know who He is. We need to know what Jesus accomplished. And finally, we need to know why it was necessary.

Jesus is the Son of God. At the request of God the Father, Jesus set aside His divine rights. Jesus took on human form to live on earth.

Jesus did this to accomplish much for us. Jesus lived a perfect life. This action qualified Him to be our substitute. Jesus stood in our place. He bore God's judgment for our sins. His death on the cross made way for us to be forgiven and experience peace with God.

Several people still question Jesus' death. But, we couldn't save ourselves. Our "good deeds" are scarred by our sin nature. When we accept Christ's remorseful work, we go from being God's enemy to a member of His family.

TEAR THIS WALL DOWN
Topic: Ephesians 2:14
For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility. Ephesians 2:14

Berlin was divided after WWII and West Berlin became an island of democracy in a sea a tyranny. When the Eastern block countries tried to isolate Berlin, it was the decision of President Harry S. Truman and the commitment of the American people that responded with the massive Berlin airlift and the saving of a free Berlin.

As a young college student studying political science, I watched the television intently as President John F. Kennedy, visited one of the Berlin Wall's most notorious crossing points, Checkpoint Charlie. He uttered the famous quote: "Today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is ?Ich bin ein Berliner. Freedom has many difficulties and democracy is not perfect," he continued. "But we never had to put up a wall to keep our people in." It was the turning point of the cold war.

Twenty four years later, once again I was glued to the television as I watched President Ronald Reagan stand in front of the wall and say: "Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" In 1989, communism fell and the wall came down. A divided city was unified into one.

A few months later, I once again saw the wall, this time in person rather than on television, as I walked through Checkpoint Charlie. It was sobering thought to freely walk through the wall........the one where on television, I had seen people shot as they tried to vault over the top. Even though the wall was gone, the difference between the vibrant western sector and the drab eastern sector was very evident. I picked up a piece of the wall and it is displayed on a book shelf in my study. In case I ever become callous about my liberty, I can always look at the piece of the wall, and remember the price of freedom.

Today, sixteen years later, once again I walked through Checkpoint Charlie, only this time the difference between East and West is hardly noticeable. Former East Berlin has blossomed like an oasis in the desert, with all sorts of new development. Less than a hundred feet across the former border is a Subway sandwich shop, a symbol itself of a free economy. What a difference it can make when walls are torn down.

Then I thought how, like the Berlin Wall, people build walls around themselves... walls of isolation, walls of bitterness and walls of hostility. Paul. In writing to the Church at Ephesus talked about tearing down the dividing barriers, the walls of hostility.

I thought how I have built walls around myself, walls to keep certain people out of my life and walls to isolate me from reaching out to others. But, the Gospel says tear those walls down, just as Reagan said to Gorbachev. So, today as I passed through that checkpoint I made a pledge to work on tearing down the walls around my life, to let others in and to reach out to even others. In a Father's Footsteps
Topic: John 13:14-17

Motivating our children to pursue the path of godliness isn't always easy, but the rewards are great. It involves several things including commitment to love God with our entire heart. We should teach our children about His loving care.

The path of godliness for our children also involves sacrifice. We should give up those pleasures and habits that interfere with raising godly sons and daughters.

We also need to show our children courage. We need to admit we're wrong and ask for forgiveness when we make mistakes. Our family, who already know our weaknesses, will see Christ's power as we adjust our behavior.

The path of godliness also involves perseverance. We should show our children how to stay the course and not lose heart. It takes time for children to develop godly habits.

Prayer is another important aspect of godly parenting. Pray that your children will grow in understanding the Lord's character, plans, and purposes, and His love. Faithfully practice the spiritual disciplines of prayer and Bible study.

The path of godliness for our children means we must learn to live by faith. We should trust in God and please Him. Recognize our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit.

We should return to the Lord a portion of our children's time, talents, and treasure. And, we should speak to others about Jesus.

Give your children the gift of a godly role model. As they follow in your footsteps, you'll experience the joy of watching them grow in holiness.

A Father's Influence
Topic: 1 Timothy 6:11-12

God designed fathers to be influential in children's lives. Dads can have a big role in training their sons and daughters in godliness. This is demonstrated through love, support and modeled behavior. Second Peter says Christian fathers have access to all they need for shepherding children.

A father's most powerful influence is his own walk with the Lord. Preschoolers have impressionable minds. These young children will remember seeing us read our Bible. They'll remember us praying on our knees. These young children will remember us worshiping with other believers.

When children are in elementary school, we can talk to them about why we pray and read the Word. They'll notice how we look in the Scriptures for answers to life's problems. They'll see how we receive divine guidance in response to prayer. When they hear us express our confidence that God has a plan for them, their own trust in Him will grow.

As teenagers, they'll watch to see how well our lives match our words. Since we're not perfect, we'll stumble at times. Handling our mistakes in a righteous manner and making necessary changes will speak volumes to them. This will teach them about the Lord's forgiveness and transforming power. And our influence doesn't stop there. It continues even when our children are grown.

God did not plan for fathers to accomplish this alone. Moms, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and friends all have important roles in teaching and modeling godliness. Working together under the Holy Spirit's guidance, we can watch our children love and serve Jesus with their whole heart.

LITTLE SINS
Topic: Song of Solomon 2:15
"Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom." Song of Solomon 2:15

A little thorn may cause much suffering. A little cloud may hide the sun. Little foxes spoil the vines; and little sins do mischief to the tender heart. These little sins burrow in the soul, and make it so full of that which is hateful to Christ, that He will hold no comfortable fellowship and communion with us. A great sin cannot destroy a Christian, but a little sin can make him or her miserable. Jesus will not walk with His people unless they turn away from every known sin. He says, "If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love." (John 15:10)

Some Christians very seldom enjoy their Saviour's presence. How can this be? Surely it must be deeply hurtful for a tender child to be separated from their father. Aren't you a child of God, and yet satisfied to go on without seeing your Father's face? Aren't you the spouse of Christ, and yet you're content without His company? If so, you've fallen into a sad state, for when He has left her the pure spouse of Christ mourns like a dove without her mate.

Ask the question, what has driven Christ from you? He hides His face behind the wall of your sins. That wall may be built up of little pebbles as easily as it may be built up of great stones. The sea is made of drops; the rocks are made of grains: and the sea which divides you from Christ may be filled with the drops of your little sins; and the rock which has nearly wrecked your boat, may have been made by the daily working of the coral insects of your little sins. If you want to live with Christ, and walk with Christ, and see Christ, and have fellowship with Christ, take heed of "the little foxes that ruin the vineyards." Jesus invites you to go with Him and take them. Jesus will surely be with you and help you eliminate foxes by His mighty power. Go with Him to the hunting!

Jesus: Doorway to the Father
Topic: John 14:6-11

A fair amount of westerners claim to "know God". They call themselves Christians. But several of them don't believe in Jesus. They don't believe in His assertion. They don't believe Jesus is the Son of God.

A person can't know the Father and be His child unless he or she has received Jesus Christ and entered into a personal relationship with Him.

Jesus is the doorway to salvation. It's not enough to "know God" by simply realizing there's a supreme being. Jesus said without faith in Him, it's impossible to come to the Father.

Since God is holy, He can't tolerate sin in His presence. But all people are sinners. Jesus died in our place to pay our debt. His death bridged the gap between impure man and holy God. Anyone, who receives Jesus' sacrifice for sin, is forgiven. This person is declared righteous. Jesus welcomes this person into fellowship with God.

Jesus is the doorway to discovery. Jesus was the earthly representation of His Father in heaven. Christ's life among men provides the most complete picture we have of God the Father. Through the Son's actions, choices, and teachings, we learn how the

Almighty thinks. We also learn what He desires from His followers.

Jesus said He and His Father are one. Omitting Christ from religious beliefs or practice leaves people with a narrow and inaccurate view of their Creator. We can't know God unless we get to know the Son.

Knowing God as Our Father
Topic: Matthew 6:9-14

The Lord's Prayer expresses God's fatherhood to His human children. In Jesus' day, calling God "Father" must have seemed like a radical and marvelous concept. The Israelites understood a link between people and a divine being. But Christ's words implied a personal relationship.

Today, adoption into God's family is still an exciting offer for anyone seeking His love and acceptance. How amazing the Holy Creator wants a relationship with us! By receiving Jesus Christ as Savior, a person is welcomed into the Lord's family. This happens even though you can never be as holy or perfect as the heavenly Father.

The bond isn't based on your own abilities, but on God's great love. The wording of the Lord's Prayer guides Christians to develop intimacy in their relationship with God. This prayer develops a connection between father and child.

The relationship Jesus demonstrated directs spiritually, adopted children to share needs, confess sin, and admit weakness. In return, the Father answers prayers. He also makes His presence known during quiet times. God offers comfort and assurance that He is always near.
