DEALING WITH DISCOURAGEMENT
Topic: Nehemiah 1:1-11
Discouragement can feel like a big weight on our shoulders. It slows us down and makes work more difficult. It can diminish our enjoyment of life.

People drag us down when they regard our best efforts as unsatisfactory. A steady stream of criticism from a family member, neighbor, or co-worker can affect how we feel about ourselves.

Dissatisfaction with our actions can also prove discouraging. Maybe it relates to a personal weakness we can't overcome or a high personal expectation we've failed to meet. Either reason can cause discouragement.

Past disappointments cause some of us to have little hope for the future. Financial pressures, declining health, and painful relationships take a toll on our emotions.

The life of Nehemiah teaches an important lesson about handling discouragement. He was a Hebrew living in Persia and serving as cup-bearer for the king. Nehemiah heard a report about the poor condition of Jerusalem and the plight of the Jews. He was deeply affected. In his disappointment over their situation, Nehemiah turned to the Lord in prayer. He knew only His great God could change the situation. In the same way, our discouragement should drive us to cry out to the Lord.

Nehemiah praised God's awesome character, confessed his sins and the sins of others, recalled divine promises, and presented his request. Let's follow Nehemiah's example and take our disappointments to the Lord in prayer.

LESSONS LEARNED FROM A REBEL
Topic: Jonah 1:1-5
One of Satan's most deceptive lies is that sin impacts only the person committing the sin. It is a large part of today's philosophy of moral relativism, which says that whatever a person believes is right for him is indeed right. Most people believe in fewer and fewer absolutes.

"I'm not hurting anyone but myself," has been uttered under more than one rebellious breath. People should take time to examine that self-absorbed statement and consider why they would ever choose to hurt themselves anyway.

Sin's roots are those of wild weeds. They grow uncontrollably until they engulf not only the offender but also many others surrounding him. Sin can choke the life out of anyone, including a believer.

Jonah was the only prophet called of God who is on record as having rebelled against Him. The result was that his circumstances grew so bad that he twice preferred death over life. Plus, those innocent and unwitting people around him suffered. The sailors on the storm-tossed ship that carried Jonah had no idea about the baggage he was bringing onboard or he never would have made it through customs!

While the temptation to sin sometimes seems irresistible, there are few occurrences in life as sobering as seeing an innocent person, especially a loved one, suffer for your rebellion.

FROM CONDEMNATION TO UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
Topic: Ephesians 6:4
God gives parents the awesome privilege of demonstrating His love to children. With support from family and friends, Mom and Dad can help their kids discover the joy and satisfaction of a personal relationship with Jesus.

Sometimes, though, we can become a stumbling block for our children, rather than a bridge to God. For example, it's important to respond to their efforts with wisdom. Some parents want their kids to succeed so badly they constantly "raise the bar." If your daughter brings home an A, do you expect an A+ next time? When your son finishes third, do you ignore his effort and push him to place second in the next race?

Unless we're careful, children may mistake their age-appropriate efforts as inadequate and disappointing to their parents. Later in life, they could dangerously assume the same is true of God. Kids might ask, "If I can't meet my earthly parents' standards, how can I ever meet the heavenly Father's?"

We should encourage our children to achieve. But we must be balanced. And we must confirm their identity outside of any dependence on performance. When we do, they'll know we appreciate them. Not only that, but they'll believe that God values them, too.

Of course, the desire of all Christian parents is for their children to depend on God and receive Christ as Savior. Parental acceptance and appreciation will help them embrace God's unconditional love. It will also reinforce the amazing truth that He's forgiven their sins and erased all condemnation.

CHANGING DOUBT TO TRUST
Topic: Psalm 19:7-11
Moments of doubt come to every believer occasionally. Perhaps we've prayed about a problem, but the solution falls through. Maybe we've obeyed God, but our situation worsens. Or a criticism might make us question our ability to carry out His plan.

When doubts linger, they can affect our relationship with God in a variety of ways:

First, doubt affects our fellowship with God. Believers are to live by faith, which is the only way to please God. Doubt short-circuits faith and causes insecurity.

Second, our prayer life suffers. Our prayers become ineffective when we fail to trust God. The impossible becomes possible only for those who believe God and don't doubt.

Third, doubt can affect our service to God. The Lord asks Christians to do God-sized tasks. But He doesn't leave us to our own devices. He promises the Holy Spirit will empower us to fulfill His plan. When we doubt, we'll either fail to answer God's call or stop halfway through.

Fourth, doubt affects our blessings. It produces discouragement, which crowds out our joy and peace in the Lord.

Spiritual uncertainty comes from a variety of sources. These include unconfessed sin, lingering guilt, misplaced focus, and misunderstanding or ignorance of the truths of Scripture. When doubts surface, follow these simple steps: First, identify which part of your thinking is causing you not to trust God. Second, recall a time when He faithfully carried you through a trial. And, third, identify one of God's promises or attributes that point the way back to faith.

THE STRUGGLE WITH DOUBT
Topic: James 1:5-8
Hebrews 11:1 says faith is "the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Trusting biblical promises require faith. At salvation, we believe we are sinners under a sentence of death. But we are saved by God through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. We also understood that God adopted us as His children, and we would live with Him in heaven forever.

Since then, many of us have struggled to believe consistently that God's promises are true. Or that they apply to us. Faith has been mixed with doubt. Sometimes, our own uneasiness about wrong choices causes us to question God's love or forgiveness. At other times, we wonder whether our needs have been met. If prayers aren't answered as we expect, we may ask if God cares or if He even has the power to help. And in the face of relentless temptation, we may start thinking He hasn't provided a way out. In such instances, we're allowing feelings and circumstances to determine our beliefs.

Uncertainty will transform to confidence in the Lord when we begin to read God's Word daily. The Bible can be trusted because the author, God Himself, is trustworthy. As we study its pages, the Holy Spirit helps us overcome doubt and teaches us how to live victoriously.

Jesus invites us to bring our burden of doubt to Him. As Matthew 11:28 says, we can trust that He will give us rest from it.

No Condemnation, Only Love
Topic: Romans 8:1-2

Ephesians 3:18 says the Father’s love for His children is so wide, long, high, and deep that we can never fully understand its scope. God’s love is constant, and it lasts forever. But sometimes, our emotions tell us otherwise.

In our minds, we often associate divine love with our behavior. When we’re good, we believe we’re loved. But when we make mistakes, we question how much He cares for us. After a series of missteps, we might think He disapproves of us far more often than He loves us. Some of us even think God’s judgment hangs over us like a dark cloud.

The truth is, there’s no condemnation for any believer. At the cross, Jesus accepted everything that would condemn us before almighty God. In the Father’s divine court of law, His Son was found guilty in our place so we could be set free from condemnation. It’s as if God stamped “Paid in Full” on the record of our sin-debt. The Christian’s transgressions are completely covered by the blood of Jesus. It doesn’t matter if the offense occurred before salvation or years in the future. No believer is indebted to God for sin.

We need to understand that He doesn’t excuse our sin. Our loving, heavenly Father uses discipline to bring us back to godly behavior. He allows us to experience sins consequences. But divine condemnation isn’t one of them. Will you open your heart and mind to receive God’s love today?

CONQUERING JEALOUSY
Topic: Psalm 37:1-4
Envy can damage the life of a Christian. Jealousy over someone else's good fortune can also harm a believer's witness. These emotions often cause people to act out of hostility and bitterness. And the envious person suffers far more than his target.

We can rid ourselves of envy by first admitting it exists. Like greed, jealousy is an emotion we don't like to admit we have. But the Lord already knows. We also must realize that feeling envious is the same as objecting to God's blessing on someone else's life. Regardless of how we try to rationalize these feelings, we're in conflict with the Lord. A person cannot be jealous and right with the Lord at the same time.

Prayer is the surest way to strip away resentment. After we've confessed our jealousy to the Lord, we must begin praying for the other person. Our petition should contain two elements. First, an offering of thanksgiving for the blessings in his or her life. And, second, a request that God will place love for the individual in our heart. At first, praying in this way will be difficult. But as love grows, you'll find the words come more easily and joyfully.

Envy is inappropriate for followers of Christ since it distracts us from the Lord. We have a promise. If we delight in our heavenly Father, He will give us our heart's desires. We need to refocus our attention upon Him and what He's doing in our life.

THE STRUGGLE WITH ENVY
Topic: 1 Samuel 18:5 -16
Jealousy is a treacherous emotion. It's poison to the believer because it opens the heart to a host of other sinful feelings and attitudes. As a result, we must deal with jealousy before it has the opportunity to take root.

King Saul's jealousy warped his thinking. He eventually became a bitter man and destroyed his relationship with David. The problem began when the people praised David more highly than the king. In 1 Samuel 18:7, they said, "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands." The king became suspicious. He began watching for signs that David might be trying to undermine his royal position. Saul never found any actual evidence. But his clouded thinking mistook any success in the young soldier's life as reason for resentment. Bitterness and fear grew until Saul was willing to take David's life just to put his troubled mind at ease.

We could never go as far as Saul did, right? Don't be so sure. Jealousy is a powerful emotion. And one cannot say what he or she might do if given free rein. That's why it's important to deal with jealousy as soon as we're aware of its presence. First, we need to examine our hearts. Determine if there's anyone who brings feelings of suspicion, bitterness, hostility, or resentment. Then, we must prayerfully submit those feelings to the Lord.

Jealousy and resentment are poisonous emotions that simply don't fit who we are as children of God. Even a little poison can be dangerous. Holding on to such attitudes for any period of time is too long.

THE HEART OF THE CROSS
Topic: Romans 5:8 -17
There is an old gospel song that contains these words: "Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe, sin had left a crimson stain, He wash'd it white as snow." There is a message God wants us to hear whenever we think of the Cross of Christ, and that is Jesus paid it all.

From the first time man sinned in the Garden of Eden, God has required a payment for sin. The Bible calls this payment atonement. Old Testament saints atoned for their sins by offering a sacrifice to God. But for the sacrifice to be acceptable, certain requirements had to be maintained. For example, man could not approach the altar of God without a priest to intervene for him. Even then the sacrifice had to be made according to the law given to Moses.

The point of all of this was to maintain a sense of awareness that God is holy and that sin is something only He could remove. But there is another thread woven into the fabric of atonement: the eternal love of God.

Even after man disobeyed God and sinned, the Lord continued to love him, so much so that God began a divine quest to restore the sweet fellowship man had once enjoyed with Him. JESUS is the only way to experience this restoration today. He is the Lamb of God -- the perfect atonement for our every sin. We can enjoy the goodness of God today because Jesus has paid it all!

The Truth of Grace
Topic: 1 Peter 5:10 -11

Through God’s grace, we’ve received everything we need for godly living. This includes forgiveness for our sins, peace with the Lord, the Holy Spirit, and access to God through prayer. We work, worship, and enjoy leisure in God’s favor. His love surrounds, upholds, fills, and sustains us.

Romans 5:10 says we’re forgiven people and God responds to us as His dearly loved children. He promises to hear our prayers and act on our behalf. He’ll provide everything we need for life and godliness. Even correction is an expression of His loving favor. As Hebrews 12:10 says, “He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.” So how are we to respond to His grace?

First, with assurance that our position is secure. John 10:28 says no one can snatch us from God.

Second, we can have boldness in living for Jesus. Grace is always upon us. Man can do or say nothing to affect our relationship with God.

Third, we can respond to His grace with confidence that something better awaits us in the future. God is carrying out His good, pleasing, and perfect will. Nothing can interfere with His plan.

Fourth, we can have hopefulness for the future. One day we’ll see Jesus in His divine glory and receive our resurrection bodies. Then, we’ll take our place as co-heirs with Christ and dwell with Him forever.

Just as He promised, God is transforming every believer according to His unique plan for that person’s life. We may stumble and disappoint ourselves or others. But we remain in the grace of God. If you have any feelings that tell you otherwise, resist them with the truth of Scripture.

AN UNFORGIVING SPIRIT
Topic: Hebrews 12:11-15
Mankind is naturally inclined to sin. Because of this, we're surrounded by opportunities to forgive others. Perhaps we've been unfairly criticized, disappointed by a broken promise, or harmed financially or physically. Whatever the case, the list of wrongdoing in this broken world can be very long.

Peter wondered how often we must pardon a wrong. He asked Jesus if we should forgive "up to seven times." In Matthew 18:21-22, Jesus replied, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to 70 times seven." In other words, every single time.

Forgiveness does NOT mean finding reasons to justify someone's wrong behavior. It's not about forgetting what happened or pretending it never occurred. That would amount to suppressing the pain and covering up the issue instead of working through it.

Genuine forgiveness requires deliberate action on our part. We acknowledge a wrong has been committed, but we also choose to release the offender from any obligation toward us. In essence, we say, "I will no longer hold this person's unfair behavior against him." We're extending mercy, just as God did toward us.

We may think we're punishing the wrongdoer. But we're the ones hurt worst by our unforgiving attitude. Resentment is like sludge. It clogs the mind and heart. Untreated anger turns into bitterness. This hinders our relationships and keeps us from experiencing the Father's love.

An unforgiving spirit is like poison in the soul. The only remedy is to forgive.

CHOOSING TO FORGIVE
Young children generally don't hold grudges. They'll react to an unpleasant situation, and then let it go. But adults have a tendency to hang on to past hurts. When people act badly toward us, we think they owe a debt for their wrong doing. We believe they're obligated to us because of their poor behavior. And it seems only fair to expect some kind of restitution. Unless that occurs, we refuse to forgive.

As Christians, we're called to a different way of thinking and acting. One that's consistent with God's character. He's a merciful Father who wants His children to show mercy to others. His Son's life on earth demonstrated how we're to live. As Jesus hung on the cross, He prayed, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." God expects us to forgive as Jesus did, regardless of circumstances.

In our humanity, we find this command difficult to carry out. That is, until we start to grasp the extent of Christ's work on our behalf. The cross made us recipients of a mercy so great it defies the imagination. The Savior took all of our sin upon Himself and died in our place. He experienced the outpouring of God's wrath so our heavenly Father would forgive us. We deserved condemnation but received God's mercy instead.

The Holy Spirit enables us to let go of past wrongs and extend mercy to others, just as Christ gave mercy to us. What choice will you make today?

THE GRACE OF GOD
Topic: Romans 5:1-2
Grace is far more than a mealtime prayer or a popular name for girls. The word communicates the idea of blessing. As children of God, we're the recipients of His abundant grace. Let's examine how we experience this amazing benefit of His love.

We see God's favor in our salvation. Ephesians 2:8 tells us, "For by grace you have been saved." The blessing is undeserved and unearned. Nothing about your or me prompts God to save us. He acts purely out of His goodness. He sacrificed Jesus so we could be reconciled to Him and adopted into His family.

Grace is also the sphere in which we live the Christian life. Colossians 1:12-13 points out that salvation transferred us from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. Here, we live out our new identity as God's child and glorify Him.

The beauty of grace becomes clear when we consider our former condition, hostile to the Lord and alienated from Him. Ephesians 2:1 says we were spiritually dead and lived according to our selfish interests. Now, through faith in Jesus, God has justified us and given us new life. According to Romans 8:1, He's declared we have right standing before Him. All of our sins were placed upon Jesus, and His righteousness has been credited to our account permanently.

Picture yourself living in the favor of God. Accept this truth, and then give the Lord thanks.

THE WEIGHT OF GUILT
Topic: John 3:16-17
False guilt can be an intolerable weight for the believer to bear. The nagging sense of shame may cause us to doubt the Lord's love and goodness. We might even start to wonder if our salvation is real. Thankfully, we can find relief.

First of all, it's helpful to identify the root cause of our guilt. For example, it might involve legalism or criticism. Next, we must affirm three truths:

One, remember we are special. Any reason we give to "prove" otherwise is a lie from Satan. Each of us is a one-of-a-kind creation. Ephesians 2:10 says the Lord created us and blessed us with specific talents and abilities meant to be used for His glory.

Two, remember we are loved. God sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins so we could live with Him eternally. We don't have to do anything to earn His love. It's already ours for the receiving. We simply must believe He died in our place, was buried, and rose again.

And the third truth is to remember we are forgiven. If we confess our sins, He forgives. First John 1:9 promises us the process is that simple.

The Enemy stimulates false guilt. Our final step must be to renounce his lies. We must make a declaration to this effect: "In the name of Jesus Christ, I reject these feelings of guilt. They have absolutely no scriptural basis. They are false, and I refuse to acknowledge them." As a result, the heavy weight of guilt will lift from our hearts.

The Erosion Of Our Lives
Topic: John 2:1-2

Rationalization of sin is a most dangerous error and is one of the ways Satan turns a man’s pride into a weapon against himself. Rationalizing sin leads to the erosion of life.

One of the most prevalent and poisonous rationalizations of sin is that, “This isn’t hurting anyone. If it is hurting anyone, it’s only hurting me, so why should I worry about it?” Another popular misconception is, “I can handle this. If I sense that I’m losing control, I’ll just quit. I won’t let it get out of control.”

The problem with such thinking is that in sin’s erosive power, the heart of a person is dulled ever more by repeated sin. There doesn’t come a time, before it’s too late, that a person can stop himself or herself when they “sense” their lives beginning to spiral out of control. The enemy is too crafty for that. Instead, he keeps you preoccupied with the supposed “benefits” of your conduct until your heart is callused. A callused heart cannot sense the pain and increasing danger of the sin barraging it. Therefore, a person often lingers in sin or unwittingly increases the sin in frequency or severity.

There is a sobering old saying: Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a lifestyle; sow a lifestyle, reap a destiny.

THE STRUGGLE WITH TEMPTATION
Topic: 1 Corinthians 10:13
No matter what form temptation takes in our life, Satan uses a fairly standard process to get us off track. And it's as effective as ever.

First, we begin to think about the object of our desire. We play with it in our minds. We imagine how we would feel if it were ours. Even though God may shower countless blessings on us, it's interesting that we always seem to focus on the one thing we don't have. It's important to ask the question: Could the Enemy be trying to redirect my focus?

Remember, Satan wants to alienate us from God. He wants us to take our eyes off the Lord. Then, he can lead us to temptation by causing us to focus on our selfish interests.

Second, the tempting thought builds until it finally gives way to full-blown desire. This intense longing is the result of our unchecked imagination. We're no longer content simply to enjoy the object in our mind. Now, we must actually have it.

The third way Satan gets us off track is when the desire leads to a choice. Here is where we make the decision to give in to the sin or lay it down.

Through the Holy Spirit, we have the ability and the power to walk away from temptation. We're never helpless to escape the situation, no matter how much momentum has built.

Do you feel powerless to stop a growing temptation? Stand firm against Satan's tactics by understanding the nature of this gradual process.

WHAT IS TEMPTATION?
Topic: Matthew 26:41
Everybody experiences temptation. It doesn't matter how "spiritual" you are or how long you've followed Christ. Sometimes, it seems like a faint whisper. Other times, it's an unbearable shout in your mind. Regardless of how it sounds, you know what it's like to be tempted. But if someone asked, could you define it?

Temptation is simply an enticement to take a God-given desire beyond God-given boundaries. Many people reject this idea. They refuse to believe their temptation could be even remotely related to God. But think about it: in what ways are you most often tempted? Material possessions? Intimacy? Relationships? Food? These are all things that God not only created, but also uses to bless His people. The problem comes when we take those drives beyond the healthy limits God set.

For example, He created sex for enjoyment within marriage. But this divinely approved desire is horribly corrupted by physical intimacy outside of marriage. In those cases, something the Creator designed for His purposes becomes a source of guilt and shame. That's not what God intended.

One of Satan's top strategies is to distort a God-given drive for his own evil purposes. You can short-circuit such an attack by reminding yourself of the origins of this drive and praying for the strength to use those drives for God's glory.

ASSURANCE OF OUR SALVATION
Topic: 1 John 5:10-13
The salvation God provided at the Cross leaves no room for uncertainty. If you've received Jesus as your personal Savior, then the Father wants you to be 100-percent certain you're saved. There's a three-fold test you can apply to your understanding of salvation.

First, ask, "What does the Word of God say?" The Bible's teaching about salvation leaves no room for doubt. Acts 16:31 says it well: "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved." That's it. It doesn't tell us to believe, plus something else. It just says, "believe."

Second, ask, "What is the witness of the Spirit?" Romans 8:16 says, "The Spirit Himself testifies that we are children of God." When we receive Jesus as Lord, the Father gives us His Holy Spirit. This ever-present Spirit inside enables us to relate to and communicate with God. Because of the Holy Spirit, we can continually testify that we're saved. Then, we'll be confident even if our feelings about salvation ebb and flow.

The third question you can ask to better understand salvation is, "What's the desire of my heart?" When the Spirit begins to reside within us, we'll experience powerful changes. We'll develop a desire for intimacy with the Lord and become sensitive to His will. This doesn't mean we'll never sin. But it does demonstrate our born-again spirit reaching for God.

You can know that you're saved. If you've made the commitment to trust Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then rejoice today as a child of God.

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT
Topic: Romans 8:3-15
In Galatians 5:16, Paul wrote, "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh." This is a simple formula for a righteous lifestyle. We have a choice. We can live according to our fleshly desires for comfort and pleasure. Or we can trust the Holy Spirit to enable us to fearlessly serve the Lord.

Resisting the tug of the flesh isn't easy. Even the disciples, who spent three years learning directly from Jesus, couldn't expect to achieve righteousness in their own strength. In Acts 1:4, the Lord instructed the disciples to wait in Jerusalem until the power of the Holy Spirit came upon them. Modern followers can put no more confidence in their flesh than did 11 of Jesus' close friends.

In order to walk by the Holy Spirit, we must accept the truth that it's impossible to live the Christian life alone. If we depend upon our experiences and strength, we'll fail. God's Spirit works in and through us. That's why submitting our will to His power and guidance is critical. And surrender isn't a one-time deal; believers have to yield repeatedly. Every time a decision must be made, we should look to the Spirit for guidance.

Righteous living simply isn't natural for human beings. We require help. Our Father has graciously given us a Helper so we can live in a godly manner. When we choose to yield to His direction, joy and peace will follow. May God grant you the wisdom to make the right decision.

THE STRUGGLE OF THE FLESH

When the New Testament refers to flesh, it’s usually not talking about human skin. The flesh is the human side of us that wants to indulge in our selfish desires. It’s a pattern of thinking and conduct that opposes God.

Someone who acts on their natural impulses is living in the flesh. Our natural impulses are geared toward personal comfort and pleasure, not toward pleasing the Lord. That means we’ll do whatever is necessary to satisfy our body and mind. People go to great lengths to fill the emptiness. They participate in acts of sexual immorality, idolatry and some of the other things listed in today’s passage. But nothing can truly satisfy the flesh. It always selfishly wants more.

Unbelievers who act out of self-interest don’t have the Holy Spirit to guide them. There’s no Helper inside to sound the alarm when they’re wrong or to enable better conduct. But the Christian has no such excuse. God’s Spirit dwells within and prompts appropriate behavior and thoughts. But the tug of the flesh remains because we do not shed our humanity until we reach heaven. So, believers still have the capacity to give in to sin and corruption.

To protect ourselves from fleshly desires, we must place our complete trust in the Holy Spirit. Only He can point out wrong actions, thoughts, and attitudes. What’s more, He fills us with the desire to obey and enables us to make right choices.
