Lessons From the Prophet Jonah
Topic: Jonah 1

The Lord's commands are clear. He tells believers when to act. He tells believers where to go.  The Lord tells believers what to do.  He also provides the means for following His directions.

The prophet Jonah was told to go immediately to a certain city.  Jonah was to cry out this warning: "Yet forty days and Ninevah will be overthrown".  Instead, Jonah did something foolish. He ran.  Jonah was a prophet.  So, we can assume Jonah had studied the Scriptures and knew God intimately.  Still, dislike about his "assignment" clouded his judgment.  Jonah became convinced he could flee the Lord's presence.

Jonah was wrong.  God sent a great storm.  God isolated Jonah for three days inside a smelly fish.  The Lord didn't end this experience until the prophet agreed to comply.  Jonah learned that running away from the Lord doesn't release us from His commands.

Whether we outwardly or quietly pursue our own agenda, we simply can't silence His call.  Our Father will neither forget nor change His mind about a command.  The Holy Spirit continues prompting us until we do as instructed.  Wise believers obey God promptly rather than waste time and talent by running.

The Blessings Of Others
Topic: 1 Peter 1:22

If we responded simply out of our natural impulses, we would probably be nice when people were kind. At other times, though, we would likely be vengeful, angry, or hurtful.

Jesus clearly teaches us to love even when those around us seem unlovable. And He lived out what He taught. Christ loved us enough to die for us while we were still sinners. Surely, out of gratitude for what He did and with His strength, we, as His followers, can love others.

While it's hard to respond to unkindness with love, such godly behavior can lead to great blessing.

First, the Father is pleased. This realization should bring His children joy, peace, and a sense of accomplishment. Next, believers ought to feel excitement and anticipation to watch how God will move in the relationship. Finally, there will be an awareness the Holy Spirit is working from within, enabling divine love to flow through yielded human lives.

John 13:35 tells of an important benefit. Jesus said, "By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." Since unconditional godly love is uncommon in our world, people will notice.

Treating others as we want to be treated is what builds the deep, satisfying connections that all people desire. Without significant relationships, life lacks meaning...regardless of how many possessions or acquaintances we have. So think about the people you come in contact with throughout the week. Are you treating them the way that Jesus modeled?

CHILDLIKE FAITH
Topic: Matthew 18:1-6
What does Jesus mean when He says we are to "become as little children"? Jesus has been misunderstood as promoting a naive or simplistic "childlike faith". And if that's true, aren't all these Bible studies, sermons, and discipleship a waste of time? While we're at it, if naiveness is so important, why waste time reading devotionals?

However, I don't think that's quite what Jesus had in mind. The Bible often encourages us to increase in wisdom and understanding; for example: "Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding" (Proverbs 3:13, TNIV) Paul tells us that in Jesus we may find "all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3) So if Jesus didn't we should "become as little children" in the sense of naivete or simplicity, what did He really mean?

Reading a verse in context will usually clarify its meaning. Jesus' admonition to "become as little children" in verse 3 relates, in context, to entering the Kingdom of Heaven. Then He says: "Therefore, anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven." (v4)

Jesus is not speaking about childlike faith, He is speaking about our attitudes towards entering the Kingdom. Jesus clarifies that we become "childlike" by being humble. A child in the first century had lower social status than his or her parents; thus they were ascribed a certain sort of humility. Jesus is admonishing us to become humble ... not naive.

Why is humility important? Jesus urges us to be humble (ex. Luke 14:11) because "True humility and fear of the LORD lead to riches, honor, and long life" (Proverbs 22:4) Humility is the opposite of pride, but it certainly doesn't mean feeling bad about yourself! Instead, being humble means recognizing our own strengths and failures, submitting to God alone, and treating others with respect and dignity ... even as better than ourselves (Philippians 2:3).

This, I think, is what Jesus had in mind by becoming like "little children". Even as we increase in knowledge and wisdom, we still must recognize our limits, and like a child trusting and following their father, so too must we try to remain humble as we follow our Father in Heaven.

Do you know anyone who embodies the kind of "childlike faith" described here? What can you try to learn from them?

REBORN AS DESCENDANTS OF THE KING OF KINGS
Topic: 1 Peter 1:23
"For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God." (1 Peter 1:23)

Peter most earnestly urged the scattered saints to "love one another deeply, from the heart" and he wisely obtained his argument, not from the law, from nature, or from philosophy, but from that high and divine nature which God hath implanted in His people.

In the same way that a prudent tutor of princes might labour to instill and foster in them a kingly spirit and dignified behaviour, basing arguments in the prince's position and descent, so too did Peter says to us: "Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God." (1 Peter 1:22-23)

Peter says this as he looks upon God's people as heirs of glory, princes of the royal blood, and descendants of the King of kings, earth's truest and oldest aristocracy. Wouldn't it be wonderful if, in the spirit of humility, we recognized the true dignity of our reborn nature, and actually lived up to it?

What is a Christian? If you compare him with a king, he adds priestly sanctity to royal dignity. The king's royalty often lies only in his crown, but with a Christian it is infused into his inmost nature. He is as much above his fellows through his new birth as a man is above all animals.

Surely we ought to carry ourselves, in all our dealings, as people who are not of the common rabble, but chosen out of the world. We should be distinguished by sovereign grace, written among "the peculiar people" and who therefore cannot grovel in the dust as others, nor live after the manner of the our culture's conventions.

Let the dignity of your reborn nature, and the brightness of your prospects, you believer in Christ, constrain you to yearn for and cling to holiness, and to avoid the very appearance of evil.

What is the significance of Jesus' title "King of kings"?

LIVING TRIUMPHANTLY
Topic: Matthew 4:18-20
The man who stepped forward to preach at Pentecost was flawed and impetuous. He had disagreed with Jesus and even denied knowing Him. But Peter developed into a man whose impact for the kingdom surpassed his impulsiveness.

When studying Peter's life, believers often focus on his negative actions - the doubt that nearly drowned him when he walked on water, and his aforementioned rebuke and denial of Jesus. But Peter is also an example of triumphant living. An uneducated fisherman who likely had few other skills, Peter put down his nets and followed Jesus the instant he was asked.

He was the first to acknowledge Christ as the Son of God. (Matthew 16:16) And after the Lord's resurrection, Peter's spontaneous nature led him to leap into the water and swim for shore when he noticed his Savior waiting there. (John 21:7) The disciple's devotion cannot be questioned.

Peter is an inspiration for us today. God does not choose servants who are solid rocks with no cracks or crevices. Instead, He selects people who have weaknesses, failures, and a need to be forgiven repeatedly.

The Lord looks for believers who are teachable, willing to repent, and prepared to surrender to God's greater will - folks who are a lot like Peter.

Too many Christians have already decided how much the Lord can do with them, based on education, personality, or talent. But God isn't interested in qualifications. He seeks willing followers who echo Isaiah's call, "Here am I. Send me!" (Isaiah 6:8) That's triumphant living.

Have you perceived God calling you to do something recently? If so, how can you know whether it is His will for you?

Dealing With Fear
Topic: Phillipians 4:6

Not only is anxiety an uncomfortable feeling, it also leads to negative consequences. Reasoning becomes cloudy when overwhelmed with worry. So an anxious person will have trouble making wise decisions. Fear of failure may also lead to procrastination or a lack of productivity. Apprehensions can devastate personal and spiritual growth, relationships, and work. So conquering fear is important. Four steps can help.

First, you need to identify the fear. Ask yourself about the circumstances surrounding your feelings and what triggered them. What message are you telling yourself?

Then turn to the Lord. Remember, God loves you and desires an intimate relationship with you. He's in sovereign control of your situation, so bring your fear to Him.

You should rebuke the fear before God. You have the authority and power in Jesus' name to reject what isn't from Him. Meditate on passages such as Matthew 10:31 and Proverbs 1:33. Let God's truth replace any wrong thinking.

Finally, cling to your heavenly Father. Take your focus off your circumstances, and look to the One who promises His help. Scripture from Isaiah 41:10 gives this assurance: "Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you. Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand".

Circumstances are external and often beyond your control. But your response originates within. It's amazing how fears diminish in the Father's presence.

Understanding Anxiety
Topic: 2 Timothy 1:7

Throughout Scripture, the Lord gives us evidence that many people deal with anxiety, even those considered pillars of faith. For example, we can deduce from Acts 18:9 that the apostle Paul must have felt fear, since God instructed Him not to be afraid "any longer".

The fact that fear is common, however, does not mean it's from God.

Of course, certain situations... like hearing a loud noise when we're alone... will trigger a frightened response. But the Lord doesn't want us to live with ongoing anxiety.

Common worries include the fear of death, poverty, illness, old age, criticism, and the loss of a loved one or something cherished. Why do we find it so hard to let go of our concerns, even when the Lord clearly states in Luke 12, "Do not fear . . ."?

Worry can be deeply ingrained in the way we think. Sometimes we have unhealthy thought patterns that stem from feelings of inadequacy, a sense of guilt, or a mistaken view of God. It's not uncommon for insecurity in childhood to develop into a lack of confidence later on.

Life experiences can be another factor. A person who's lost a parent suddenly in a car accident is likely to struggle with worry.

Regardless of the cause, anxiety will take our eyes off our loving heavenly Father and focus our attention on our circumstances. No wonder God repeatedly reminds us not to fear. He wants His children to feel secure in His capability and trustworthiness.

WINNING IN THE SUPER BOWL OF LIFE
Topic: 1 Corinthians 9:25
And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown , but we for an imperishable crown. (1 Cor. 9:25)

It happens once a year and many consider it to be the number one sports event of the year. It's the Super Bowl, where you would like to think that the two best teams in the world play each other. Really it is a single elimination process where whatever one team on a given day happens to beat another team on that day advances, and recent years have proven that while a sports production, the game itself is often mediocre, at best. This year was actually an exception, with two generally defensive teams scoring a total of forty-five points and keeping everyone in suspense until the last minute of play. I am not sure that the two teams in this years game were the best of the best. I still think the Indianapolis Colts should be there, but, like most fans, I am biased.

People pay big bucks, for many more than they can afford, to attend the game, be seen and brag to their friends that they attended "the big game." It really is a made for television spectacular. It has almost become a production where, playing football is also something they do. Unlike all the other games, where one of the two teams have the home field advantage and the local crowd to cheer them on, most super bowl tickets are purchased by corporate America to wine, dine and impress friends and customers. The average person in the stands really doesn't care who wins, as "their" team is rarely in the game.

But, it is all about winning. It has gotten to the point that, rather than being an honor to get to the biggest game, the team that loses is, well, a loser. It is like the headline about the silver medallist in the Olympics that said the person had "lost his quest for greatness." Frankly, I think just getting on an Olympic team is a feat and winning a medal of any color is a special victory. But no, our world sees only winners and losers.

And just what is it that most athletes chase? It is a medal, a trophy, a designation or some tangible or intangible whatever that the sports world has attached great value to. It is amazing, the number of athletes who, after retiring from their sport, fall on hard times and have to sell their rings and trophy's to make ends meet. That's when they find the true value. The re-sale value will put groceries on the table for but a short while, as people generally are not interested in yesterday's sports news or heroes.

People in Jesus' time were nuts over athletics too. That's why He preached and drew so many parallels to athletic events. The quest for winning was something people could relate to. But Jesus pointed to the race, more than to the win. He said that more important than winning is to make sure you are in the right race and chasing the right goals. Why run to win a perishable crown (a laurel wreath) that will wilt in a few days, when you can a race to gain that which never tarnishes and lasts forever... eternal life with God through His son Jesus Christ. Make sure you are running the right race and competing for the right goals. If Jesus is your goal, then you are in the right race.

After all, my Harley has a lot more shine than a Heisman trophy and it's a lot more fun to play with.

Do you yearn to be able to say what Paul said: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7)

Worth the Wait
Topic: Isaiah 57:10

Abraham didn't wait for the Lord to provide him a son. He took matters into his own hands. His decision not to wait for God's time and method revealed several things about him.

First, he was impatient. Second, he doubted. Though he believed God would give him a son, as time passed, he sensed he was losing the opportunity. Third, he was prideful. Abraham wanted it done by his own schedule and assumed his way should be good enough. Finally, he was selfish. By acting without the Lord's leading, Abraham showed he expected God's will to revolve around him. In reality, he was stepping out of the Father's plan.

When we choose to manipulate circumstances or timing, these same things are revealed about us. Instead, we should wait for God's plan and path, both of which flow from His love and wisdom. He is certain of what's best for us. Our role is to seek His guidance and depend on Him.

Sometimes we know what God is going to do but are unclear when He'll act. Other times, we're unsure of the outcome. Regardless, we can be confident that God loves us and He's all-powerful. If we truly understand who He is, we'll be able to trust Him. And when we're trusting Him, we'll be able to wait for His perfect timing.

God makes a promise. Faith believes it. Hope anticipates it. And patience waits quietly for it. Do you trust the Lord enough to be patient for His way and His time?

Waiting for God
Topic: Psalm 27:14

Our culture is an "instant" society. Because of inventions like the computer and the microwave, we're used to quick results. A fast pace isn't necessarily bad, but we should guard against becoming so set on immediate fulfillment that we can't wait for God's timing.

This problem existed long before the computer age. In Genesis 15:4-5, God revealed to Abraham that though he and his wife Sarah were too old to have children, a great nation would come from him. Abraham believed God but soon decided to handle matters himself. He took Sarah's servant Hagar as his wife so she could bear the promised son.

Abraham probably rationalized his decision, figuring the Lord wanted him to have a son. Since it seemed impossible any other way, surely this must be what God wanted him to do! But it wasn't. Abraham had to deal with the consequences of his actions, including jealousy and resentment between Sarah and Hagar. These problems in turn created further difficulties, both in the short term and throughout history.

The Lord was faithful, though. 14 years later, Sarah gave birth to Isaac. But, the consequences of Abraham's decision to step out of God's plan are still with us. The two boys grew to become the fathers of nations which are in conflict to this very day.

Like Abraham, we might believe God's promises but prefer immediate results. Or we may just want things done our way. Instead, ask the Lord to lead you. Then wait for Him. His way may not be what you think you want, but it is always best.

OUR TEACHER
Topic: John 14:26
"But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." (John 14:26)

One of the Holy Spirit's roles is to illumine the truths of Scripture to us. In fact, He is called the Spirit of truth in John 16:13.

While it is our responsibility to be open to the leading and teaching of the Spirit - agreeing to heed His instruction and submit to His will - it is His responsibility to transform us into the likeness of Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit has at least four methods of teaching us: revelation, illumination, reminders, and guidance.

The Bible is His revelation. He helps us mine its deep truths through illumination. Sin in our lives will cloud our efforts to understand these deep truths, but a heart bent toward God in sincere devotion and interest will prompt the Spirit to richly reward us.

Next, the Holy Spirit reminds us of these truths, often "giving" us a Scripture when needed. How many times have you found yourself in a difficult situation only to suddenly recall a pertinent verse of Scripture? That is the Holy Spirit. Finally, He guides us into application of these truths. He helps us understand what God wishes us to learn and what the message means specifically for our lives.

All of this is part of the Holy Spirit's unending discipleship ministry. As long as you live in submission and obedience to Him, God will work through His Spirit to mold you into the likeness of His Son, your Savior.

Who is the Holy Spirit? Why do you think we have less cognitive knowledge less about the Holy Spirit than about the Father or the Son?

EXPOSED BY GOD
Topic: Luke 9:43
"And they were all amazed at the greatness of God." (Luke 9:43)

Again and again in the gospels, we are told that people were amazed by Jesus' words and miracles.

Yet, the personal reaction of Simon Peter stands out in my mind, because of the revolution it began in his heart.

"When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me Lord; I am a sinful man!" For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners." (Luke 5:8-10)

Through His miracles, Jesus revealed Himself as God.

That revelation not only showed Peter who Jesus was, it exposed his own heart.

Peter realized that he was a sinful man.

That is what happens when we seek to know God. Not only do we discover who God is, as He reveals

Himself to us, but we also discover who we are.

The greatness of God exposes our sinfulness.

Thankfully, Jesus doesn't leave us when we discover our sinfulness. In fact, that was the reason He came. Only when we recognize our need for a savior, can we reach out to Jesus to redeem us.

Listen to how Jesus responds to Peter's admission of sin. "Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men." So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed Him." (Luke 5:10-11)

God's greatness does expose our sinfulness, but it's no surprise to God. He responds to us as Jesus responded to Peter, "Don't be afraid; put your faith in me and follow me."

The process will begin an amazing transformation in us, so that like Peter we will leave everything to follow Him.

When have you experienced being exposed by God? Why is it better to face what He exposes rather than to continue hiding?

Ending Gossip in Our Lives
Topic: Ephesians 4:29-32

Spreading rumors about other people exposes little about their true nature but reveals a lot about the speaker's own character. Such behavior shows a willingness to sin against the Lord by causing harm to someone else. Until a gossiping believer confronts his sin, he can't progress toward becoming the person God wants him to be.

Confession is the first step in dealing with sinful speech. This should be followed by repentance by pledging to turn away from opportunities to talk about others. A useful scripture to pray daily is Psalm 141:3: "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips."

Second, be on guard against temptation. Believers have a responsibility to set themselves apart from gossip in order to keep thoughts and words pleasing to God. Being in the presence of one who spreads stories can tempt even a believer to participate. In a situation where rumors are being shared, the best course of action is to speak out against the practice and then leave.

Finally, instead of talking about someone, it's wise to pray for that person. Getting into this habit will help train the mind to replace sinful patterns with God-pleasing ways. The Bible teaches us to encourage and comfort each other, and prayer is a good way to obey that instruction.

A gossiping Christian dishonors God's name and his own. Instead of using words that disparage and injure, choose to speak well of everyone. In so doing, you'll bring glory to the Lord.

The Character of Gossip
Topic: Romans 1:28-31

God hates gossip. He wants our speech to be pleasing to Him. He certainly doesn't consider idle talk or mean-spirited words pleasant as stated in Colossians 3:8.

Sadly, gossip is practiced so freely that even some believers participate and try to justify their chatter. But hearsay has no place in a Christian's life. Romans 1 contains one of the Bible's longest lists of sins. The book's author, the apostle Paul, is reminding believers that God has revealed Himself to all mankind. Those who reject Him and chase after idols are turned over to their evil worship and the immoral practices that go with serving self.

Gossip appears in the middle of the list. God despises it because malicious talk destroys lives whether the stories are true or false. The person who is targeted by the rumor often loses the respect of those who listen to it. Hurt feelings may not be the only negative effect. A job or relationship could be lost as well.

Those spreading tales also face destructive consequences. People who refuse to control the tongue reveal evil motives or, at the very least, lack of discipline. As a result, believers and unbelievers will often avoid such untrustworthy individuals. For a Christian who spreads rumors, there's potential for even worse damage, in that such actions can harm fellowship with the Lord. Animosity toward another person and intimacy with God can't coexist in the same heart.

Gossip achieves no good in anyone's life, which is why the Lord warns against it. Instead, our words should build up, comfort, and encourage others.

Dealing with Loneliness
Topic: Psalm 102:1-7

Loneliness can be a lifelong challenge or a short-term event. The length of the experience is often determined by how we deal with it. Turning to the Lord can help us find our way through the fog of isolation.

You can admit to lonely feelings. Being a Christian doesn't disqualify us from sometimes having a sense of seclusion. Many of David's Psalms speak of his longing for companionship. When we express our feelings to the Father and cry out for His touch, He will answer. I often tell God that I need Him to wrap His arms around me. His response is just as real as if a human being walked in and hugged me.

You should develop godly relationships. We should pray for friends who'll point us toward the Lord whether we're in good times or bad. These are the loved ones who see our faults and like us anyway.

And, be anchored in Scripture. When we cling to the Word during a lonely time, we'll end up with a richer understanding of the Lord. Occasionally we all will walk through the fog of loneliness. But God is the Light guiding us out again. If you're struggling with feelings of isolation, cry out to Him for help.

THE VICTORY OF THE RESURRECTION
Topic: 2 Corinthians 4:14-18
The resurrection of believers is going to be a transforming experience for our bodies and a triumphant moment in history. The dead in Christ shall rise from their graves just as the Lord promised. (1 Thessalonians 4:16)

Right now we all face the mortality of our bodies. Although we may try to ignore it, our earthly frames are deteriorating and will eventually cease to function here on earth. Physical death isn't preventable, but there is good news for everyone who has trusted in Jesus Christ. Death can't permanently hold us. Its "sting" - which is not just separation from loved ones and cessation of life, but also the bondage of sin (1 Corinthians 15:56) - was transformed for the believer. Now the end of the Christian's earthly life means entrance into heaven with God and all His saints.

Having received such amazing news - indestructible bodies, life forever with God, and death permanently destroyed one day - how are we to live on earth? Paul exhorts us, "Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Let the knowledge of what Jesus Christ has accomplished for us and what He promises will one day be ours motivate us to wholehearted Christian commitment. Living for the Lord and pleasing Him is to be our aim.

As believers, we value the triumphant, eternal work of Jesus. Let's be sure the unbelieving world can see Him reflected in our relationships, work ethic, and everyday activities.

How are we to live as members in Christ's body?

When We are Lonely
Topic: Hebrews 4:14-16

Despite the fact that technology enables us to stay connected, we haven't solved the loneliness problem. Many people still feel cut off from those around them. The real solution for healing the deep ache of isolation is an intimate relationship with God.

As He was about to create Adam, God said in Genesis 1, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness". One point of resemblance to the Lord is our desire and ability to share intimacy with others. We're created to commune with God.

Adam and Eve had a close bond with the Lord, who spent time with them in the Garden of Eden. But, the couple's disobedience caused a rift in the relationship. Since God is holy, He can't allow anything unrighteous into His presence. Once sin entered the world through the first couple, every person born would be tainted with it and separated from God.

Yet because of His love, the Lord planned a way to bridge the gap between Himself and mankind. Jesus Christ took our transgressions upon

Himself and died on the cross, wiping away the stain of sin. Whoever trusts in His sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins goes over the "bridge" formed by the cross. Each new believer is immediately restored to a right relationship with God.

IT?S ALL ABOUT JESUS
Topic: 1 Corinthians 2:1-2
"When I came to you ... I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified." (1 Corinthians 2:1-2)

The Gospel message has gotten a little foggy these days with all the attention being paid to politics, family values, and culture wars, and a lot of folks have lost track of the fact that it's all about Jesus. Ask the man on the street what a Christian is today and you're likely to ask a long time until you hear anything about Jesus or the cross. Our message, from beginning to end, is Jesus -- who he was, what he said, and what he did.

The last recognized revival in this country was a movement primarily among baby boom youth in the early 1970s that was quickly dubbed the Jesus movement. It got that name because everything was focused around Jesus. When you think about it, Jesus was the ultimate hippie -- he wore long hair, sandals, and he was against the establishment -- and a generation of ideological kids embraced Christ, even while they rejected religion and the institutional church. Jesus was the central figure in all of this. What is now called Christian music was originally called Jesus music. Christians were called Jesus freaks. Now I'm not suggesting we all go back to tie-dyed T-shirts, bell-bottom pants, and Jesus rock, but I am suggesting we could learn something from this emphasis that transcended politics and religion.

Our message is all about a person, and our mission is to share that person with the world. God made us to belong to him; we wandered away; Jesus is the way back. A whole generation of young people found that out 30 years ago and nothing's really changed about the heart of the message. It's a personal message. It's non-threatening. It's all about a meaningful relationship with God that comes to someone by way of a meaningful relationship with them. There's not a lot of baggage here. Our main concern is to introduce ourselves to people and in doing so, to introduce them to Jesus, because, as far as we're concerned, that's who it's all about.

Jesus came to save us, unite us, and teach us to love one another. We've added a lot of other stuff to this and I'm not so sure it's helping us do what we're supposed to be doing. If it makes you more loving to your neighbor, then it's probably a good thing. If it makes you your neighbor's enemy, then it's probably not. If it's all about Jesus, then it's definitely "right on!"

What makes Jesus and His message different from every other "religious" teacher?

Building Solid Friendships
Topic: Ephesians 6:7-8

Friendships are among our most valuable assets. Acquiring quality companions, who laugh with us in good times and stand by us during trials, requires shared commitment and an investment of time and energy.

We must be transparent and be honest with friends and encourage them to be truthful in return. To preserve a healthy bond, we can't hide hurts or feelings of rejection they may have caused. Transparency that is tied to accountability can also help make each individual a better person. A solid relationship allows each party to gently point out errors in the other's life and offer loving correction.

Genuine friendship takes time to develop. We must be willing to put aside other obligations and give priority to moments spent together. A generous portion of our time with each other should be spent talking about our thoughts and desires and also asking questions to prompt our friend to open up. This type of conversation allows a glimpse into the other person's heart and mind.

Everyone likes to feel appreciated. Expressing thanks when friends are helpful will remind them that we're grateful to have them in our life. We affirm our love when we communicate how much we enjoy a certain aspect of their personality or remember an occasion that's special to them.

Being a good friend is a way to serve the Lord. He designed us to be in relationship with others, so we should give our best to every companion God places in our life.

COMPLAINING IN THE WILDERNESS
Topic: Philippians 2:14
"Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you." (Philippians 2:14, NLT)

Do you enjoy waking up early? I don't. I emphasize with the psalmist when he writes: "I rise early, before the sun is up; I cry out for help and put my hope in your words." (Psalm 119:147, NLT)

It's not that I'm lazy, I'm just not a "morning person". That's why I need to continually turn away from the temptation to complain.

Just after the Exodus, when Moses had miraculously led the Israelites out of Egypt, the Israelites sung a song of praise to the Lord for their deliverance. (See Exodus 15.) But just a few days later they encountered hardship and quickly changed their tune. The title of the next section after the Israelite's song of praise reads "Complaining in the Wilderness," in my Bible, which is a poignant example the way our hearts can often be fickle.

How can we guard against becoming "complainers in the wilderness"?

Think about the end of Psalm 119:147: "I cry out for help and put my hope in your words." Throughout the Bible we are constantly reminded to remember what God has done for us. All history is truly "His story" ... the story of God's mighty acts. When we are faced with difficult times, we can reflect upon what God has already done for us, and His promises for the future which we find in His Word, because we know that God is faithful and will fulfill all that He has promised to us, including our own resurrections to eternal life in fellowship with God Himself.

I'm still not a morning person. But I try to remember that when I wake up early, that groggy feeling lasts only a few fleeting moments, and then the rest of the divinely gifted day awaits me. It's hard to complain about a free gift, and a promise of the ultimate free gift to come.

What has been bothering you lately that you need to bring to God in prayer?
