WHAT HOLDS YOU BACK
Topic: Matthew 8:2-3
Tell me about who you are as a man? How about as a Christian? In how many ways do you identify yourself: father, brother, husband, son, friend, lover?

Do you ever describe yourself with words like dreamer, or revolutionary? What holds you back from being God's hands in bringing about change and transformation in this broken world?

As Christ-followers, we follow a personal God who is both willing and able to heal. Matthew 8:2-3 tells us, "A man with leprosy came and knelt before Christ and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean."  Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy."

We are also told in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that "we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." It isn't a question about whether we are being transformed into the likeness of Christ as believers. The Holy Spirit dwells in us and even if the progress seems slow, change is occurring. The question is whether we allow that change to overflow and cause us to become a transformative force in our world.

Jesus was willing and able to heal, and he still is. He longs to be involved in the lives of billions of hurting people now just as much as He longed to see the healing of that one leprous man come to fruition. And He wants to use you to bring about this revolution.

How often are we unwilling to allow God to use us, or untrusting that He has given us the strength needed for the task ahead? God is in the business of transforming lives, and as He works in us, He desires to use our changed lives to have an impact on individuals, families and communities.

Are you open and willing for God to use you in ways to further His will on Earth and to glorify Him?

HELL BOUND
Topic: Proverbs 25:2
It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings. -- Proverbs 25:2 (NIV)

There was a poignant story this week about evangelists on the streets of Las Vegas. They were preaching and holding signs about the gospel when a woman walked by and shouted: "I am a sinner and I am going straight to hell." Cheers resounded from some people nearby who supported the sentiment.

"It doesn't have to be that way," one of the evangelists called out.

"I want it that way," the woman called back over her shoulder.

Ironically, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was in the middle of a lawsuit defending the evangelists' right to be there based on laws of free speech, and in the process this woman exercised her right to walk into hell with her head held high. It's an awesome, God-given privilege to have the right to do this, and we need to defend that right, even though we know how tragic this is, just as the ACLU has to defend the evangelists' right to the sidewalk if they are going to be consistent with their commitment to free speech. It's remarkable how God has chosen to honor the dignity of human beings who reject Him.

Think about it this way: God has not made the truth about His existence obvious to everyone. When Jesus came, you had to have "ears to hear" or you missed it. Why doesn't God make Himself more obvious to everyone? He is protecting the rights of those who don't believe as well as those who do.

If God were obvious to everyone, you would be a fool for not believing. In which case, some might believe reluctantly or for the wrong reason. As it is, you are a fool (1 Corinthians 1:18) for believing and those of us who believe can afford that foolishness because our faith confirms in us what we see but others don't.

So this woman who wants it this way?wants to be a sinner going straight to hell?should not be looked upon as an enemy, or some twisted, sick soul who is about to get what she deserves. Instead, we love her, respect her, and marvel at the freedom God has given her to be able to do this?to make it her call.

You probably know somebody like this who frustrates you no end. I bet the sign-holder had at least the thought of using her sign to bang some sense into this woman. Instead, we need to honor and learn how to befriend people like this, and respect their right to believe what they believe. By allowing for their unbelief, we may just be creating the environment that will encourage them to believe. Anyway, hasn't God done that with us?

Do you know someone who takes the attitude of the women mentioned in this devotional? What would you want to tell her if you met her, and how would you do it?

MAY GOD SMILE ON YOU
Topic: Numbers 6:25
"May the Lord smile on you." Numbers 6:25 (NLT)

The smile of God is the goal of life.

Since pleasing God is the first purpose of your life, your most important task is to discover how to do that. The Bible says, "Figure out what will please Christ, and then do it" (Ephesians 5:10, MSG).

Fortunately, the Bible gives us a clear example of a life that gives pleasure to God. The man's name was Noah.

In Noah's day, the entire world had become morally bankrupt. Everyone lived for their own pleasure, not God's. God couldn't find anyone on earth interested in pleasing him, so he was grieved and regretted making man. God became so disgusted with the human race that he considered wiping it out.

But there was one man who made God smile. The Bible says, "Noah was a pleasure to the Lord" (Genesis 6:8, LB).

God said, "This guy brings me pleasure. He makes me smile. I'll start over with his family." Because Noah brought pleasure to God, you and I are alive today.

Over the next few days, we will learn from Noah's life the five acts of worship that make God smile.

God smiles when we love him supremely. Noah loved God more than anything else in the world, even when no one else did! The Bible tells us Noah "consistently followed God's will and enjoyed a close relationship with him" (Genesis 6:9, NLT).

This is what God wants most from you: a relationship! It's the most astounding truth in the universe: our Creator wants to fellowship with us. God made you to love you, and he longs for you to love him back. He says, "I don't want your sacrifices -- I want your love; I don't want your offerings -- I want you to know me" (Hosea 6:6, LB).

Can you sense God's passion for you in this verse? God deeply loves you and desires your love in return. He longs for you to know him and spend time with him. This is why learning to love God and to be loved by him should be the greatest objective of your life.

Nothing else comes close in importance. Jesus called it the greatest commandment. He said, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment" (Matthew 22:37-38).

What does God want most from you?

DELIGHT IN GOD
Topic: Psalm 37:4
"Delight yourself in the Lord." Psalm 37:4

The teaching of these words must seem surprising to those who have never known real godliness, but to the sincere believer they only restate a recognized and profound truth. The life of the believer is described as a "delight" in God, and therefore true religion will always overflow with happiness and joy. Anyone who doesn't actively cultivate a relationship with God, including secular scholars who study religion as merely an intellectual pursuit or as a social curiosity, never look upon religion as a joyful thing; to them it is service, duty, or necessity, but never pleasure or delight. If they are personally involved in religion at all, it is either for personal gain or for cultural reasons only.

The thought of delight in religion is so strange to most people. No two words in their language stand further apart than "holiness" and "delight." But believers who know Christ understand that delight and faith are so blessedly united, that the gates of hell cannot prevail to separate them. They who love God with all their hearts find that His ways are ways of joy, and all His paths are peace. Such joys, such overwhelming delights, such overflowing blessednesses, they can continurally discover in the Lord. Instead of merely serving Him out of habit, they follow Him even if all the world were to curse His holy name.

We do not revere God because of any compulsion. Our faith is no chain, and our confession of faith is no enslavement. We are not dragged to holiness, nor driven to duty. No, our piety is our pleasure, our hope is our happiness, our duty is our delight.

Delight and true religion are as united as root and flower; as indivisible as truth and certainty. They are, in fact, two precious jewels glittering side by side in a setting of gold.

"Tis when we taste Thy love, Our joys divinely grow, Unspeakable like those above, And heaven begins below."

What brings you delight, and in what ways does/should the Lord bring you delight?

CAN YOU SEE CLEARLY
Topic: Matthew 7:3-5
In a recent survey of "unchurched" individuals conducted by Barna Research Group, an astonishing 85% of participants called Christians "hypocritical".

Of course, everyone is a hypocrite to some degree, so in a way they're right. However, in the same way that there's a difference between knowing we are sinners and being actively engaged in sin, there's also a difference between knowing we are all hypocrites and being actively engaged in hypocritical lifestyles. And we need to overcome our hypocrisy before we can begin to help others.

It's like those safety instructions the stewardess explains each time you're on an airplane. (You know, those potentially life-saving instructions that you coolly ignore?) We're told in an emergency to put on our own oxygen mask first before helping others put on their masks. Likewise, in today's passage Jesus tells us to remove the log from our own eye before removing the speck from someone else's.

Jesus is referring, of course, to sin in our lives. We can't help others to turn away from their sin until we, trusting in God's righteous grace to guide us, first turn away from our own. How can we explain to others how to overcome their sins unless we can see clearly to show them how?

Thankfully, through our trust in Jesus and His sacrifice on our behalf, we may be absolved from the consequences of our sin. But we need to continually be allowing God to show us where we need to make adjustments in our lives and trusting in Him to do so. God wants you to be free of hypocricy, as Christ was, and welcomes you to walk with Him on the road to holiness with Him as your guide.

Can you recognize hypocrisy in your life? And if so, can you commit today to paying more attention to God in order to eliminate such hypocrisy?

Message For You

Franklin Graham speaks the truth, straight from the Bible:

What I have to say are not my words. It’s God’s message for you tonight. You see, there’s a judgment that is going to come. God’s going to judge sin, but today God’s willing to forgive. He’s willing to cleanse us of our sins. But there is a judgment that’s coming, and I want to prepare you to stand before an almighty God. I want you to be able to stand before Him having your sins forgiven, cleansed, so that He would welcome you into Heaven, welcome you into His presence, but the only way that we can come to God is if we have that right standing, if we are righteous before Him, and tonight you can take that stand and come and have your sins forgiven.

Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father. Your new life begins when you come to him by faith. Take the first step by calling at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, toll free at 877-2GRAHAM. Or click

Unchanging Law

Billy Graham speaks about God’s unchanging law:

The moral law has not changed. "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." "Honor thy father and thy mother." That law has not changed. "Thou shalt not steal." Look at the robberies and the cheating in school and the problems we have. We didn't have much cheating in the school I went to many years ago. Do you know why? The principal had a special room, and he had a way of making people change when they came out. But the way of salvation has not changed either.

The way of salvation is open to you today if you will repent and come to Jesus Christ through faith. We’re the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. For a free booklet about how to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, call toll free at 877-2GRAHAM. Or click

THE BLESSINGS OF WISDOM
Topic: Proverbs 3:1-4
The world claims there are many paths to a successful, rewarding life: education, wealth, public recognition, or even service to the less fortunate. But in the end, nothing will satisfy unless God is a factor.

When we choose to walk wisely, God will bless us abundantly. (John 10:10) Not only will we have intimacy with the Lord, protection, and clear guidance, but we will also receive divine power to walk circumspectly before Him. Wisdom - understanding God's perspective on our circumstances and responding accordingly - brings us the strength to stand firm in our faith and choose His way. It also helps us to calmly accept the hardships in our lives. Our sovereign God knows the extent of our difficulties. Out of His love for us, He sets a limit to them and uses even our darkest hours for His good purposes. Wise people are convinced this is true; they will enjoy the supernatural peace promised by Christ and will live in the favor of the Lord. (Proverbs 8:34 - 35)

Lastly, God's desire is to prosper His people. Spiritual wealth comes to those who increase their understanding of God and apply His ways to their lives. This is His first priority for us, but He is also aware of our material needs. As we make application of scriptural principles with regard to finances, possessions, and use of time, we will benefit materially as well.

God stands ready to pour out His choicest blessings - power, divine favor, spiritual prosperity, and supernatural peace - on those who draw near to Him and submit to His plan.

How has careful attention to God's Word caused you to prosper in the past?

THE SLIPPERY PATH
Topic: Jude 1:24-25
"To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy - to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen." Jude 1:24-25

In some sense the path to heaven is safe. But in other respects there is no road as dangerous; it is overrun with difficulties.

One false step (and how easy it is to step absently if grace is absent), and down we go. What a slippery path some of us tread! How many times have we cried along with the Psalmist, "My feet were almost gone, my steps had well nigh slipped." If we were strong, sure-footed mountaineers, this would not matter so much; but relying on our own abilities, how weak we are! In the best roads we soon falter, in the smoothest paths we quickly stumble. A straw may throw us, and a pebble can wound us; we are mere children tremblingly taking our first steps in the walk of faith. Thankfully our heavenly Father holds us by the arms or we would soon fall all the way back down!

We have many foes who try to push us down. The road is rough and we are weak, but in addition to this, enemies lurk in ambush, who rush out when we least expect them, and try to trip us, or hurl us down the nearest cliff. Only an Almighty arm can preserve us from these unseen foes, who are seeking to destroy us. Such an arm is engaged for our defense.

If we are kept from falling, how much more should we bless the patient God which watches over us day by day! Think how prone we are to sin, how apt to choose danger, how often we end up bringing ourselves down, and these reflections will make us sing more sweetly than we have ever done, "Glory be to Him, who is able to keep us from falling."

He promises that He will remain faithful, and He is able to keep us from falling, so that even with a deep sense of our utter weakness, we may cherish a firm belief in our perfect safety, and say, with joyful confidence,

"Against me earth and hell combine, But on my side is power divine; Jesus is all, and He is mine!"

How do you try to constantly keep your eyes on Jesus?

MORE THAN FRIENDS
Topic: Ephesians 2:19-21
"You are citizens along with all of God's holy people. You are members of God's family. Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord." Ephesians 2:19b-21

Recently I helped a friend move. Anyone who's done that can appreciate that it's not the most enjoyable activity. My friend's brother also helped her move, but I noticed that she didn't need to ask him; his help was implied. However, she made it a point to ask for my help, even though we've been friends for many years and I was of course glad to do it.

I think the difference was that her brother is part of her family, whereas I am "only" a friend.

In today's passage, we read that we are "members of God's family". We are therefore brothers and sisters in Christ. Perhaps Paul was remembering this teaching of Jesus:

While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you."

He replied to him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." Matthew 12:46-50

Today, we are Jesus' disciples. Jesus points to you, and calls you a member of His family, dearly loved and accepted.

Can't we do the same for our family in Christ? Can't we be united in Christ, "perfectly united in mind and thought" with our fellow brothers and sisters? (1 Corinthians 1:10)

Or, to paraphrase Jesus' question, who is your mother, who are your brothers?

WHAT IT MEANS TO FOLLOW CHRIST
Topic: John 15:1-11
The spiritual pruning process of our lives includes cutting away all that reflects our earthly passions that are in opposition to God's holiness. A. B. Simpson writes: "Before the Holy of Holies can be fully opened to our hearts and we can enter into . . . communion of God, the veil upon our hearts must be rent asunder, and this comes as it came on Calvary - by the death of our flesh.

"It is when we yield our own natural self to God to die and He slays us by the power of His Spirit that the obstruction to our communion with God is removed and we enter into its deeper fullness. The greatest hindrance to our peace and victory is the flesh. Whenever the consciousness of self rises vividly before you, and you become absorbed in your own troubles, cares, rights or wrongs, you at once lose communion with God, and a cloud of darkness falls over your spirit.

"There is really nothing else that hurts or hinders us but this heavy weight of evil, this seed of Satan. . . . We can never rend it asunder, but the Holy Spirit can. It dies only on the cross of Jesus . . . under the fire of His descending Spirit. Bring it to Him, give Him the right to slay it, and then the veil will be rent asunder. The Holy of Holies will open wide, the light of the Shekinah will shine through all the house of God, and the glory of heaven will be revealed in your life."

Have you been "pruned" before in your spiritual walk? How did that experience end up shaping you to have a closer and purer relationship with God?

ALL IN THE FAMILY
Topic: Matthew 12:46-50
As Jesus was speaking to the crowd, his mother and brothers were outside, wanting to talk with Him. Someone told Jesus, "Your mother and your brothers are outside, and they want to speak to you."

Jesus asked, "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" Then He pointed to His disciples and said, "These are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!" Matthew 12:46-50, NLT

Everyone wants to be on the inside. The existence of clubs, secret societies, membership, and associations indicates there is something in all of us that seeks a special identity apart from everyone else. No one wants to be lost in a crowd.

In the instance quoted above, Christ's immediate family tried to pull rank on the larger group Jesus was addressing. The implication in their request is that they expected Jesus to give them priority over the crowd; they wanted Him to stop what He was doing and pay attention to them. We have no idea what the urgency was, it may have even been some important family matter they felt was worthy of an interruption, but Jesus used the opportunity to teach everyone something: He has a much bigger family than His nuclear family, and in that family, everyone has priority.

How does it feel to be a part of Christ's immediate family? We have priority. Even if Mary His mother showed up, Jesus would say, "Just a minute. I know you're my mother, but I'm talking to my mother over here." Our requests receive the same significance as those from Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Christ's earthly brothers. We have privilege, by walking in God's will.

It's a testimony to his humility that one of those brothers waiting to talk to Jesus that day was James, who went on to become one of the most important leaders of the early church, respected by Jews and Gentiles alike, and the author of the New Testament book by his name. When he introduces himself at the beginning of that book, he calls himself: "James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ." James 1:1 Nothing else. You would think he would have thrown in "and brother of Jesus," just for extra measure (I would have), but he did not. He didn't want his place to be seen as any different from anyone else's.

James knew that we could all say we are "the brother/sister of Jesus" by rebirth. He was not in a special position by birth; he was in a special position by a new birth into God's family by faith. The same can be true for each of us.

How can we try to remain humble, given the fact we are considered family with our Lord?

GOD IS OUR TRAVEL AGENT
Topic: Psalm 48:14
"For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end." Psalm 48:14

My sixteen - year-old son and I were going to Switzerland on a much needed vacation.

We consulted a travel agent, secured maps, and bought a Swiss travel pass. Getting around in a foreign country was exciting, but, at times, it was also scary.

For instance, late one afternoon we couldn't find a place to sleep in the whole city of Basel! Due to a world conference every place was taken. Storm clouds were gathering in a blackening sky. Then a gusty wind buffeted the train station, followed by a drenching downpour. It was getting dark and we wondered what to do next. As good as our travel agent was, she hadn't foreseen this emergency. Eventually we did find a place to sleep and all turned out well in the end.

Compare this to a recent trip to Senegal, a country in western Africa, much further away, with fewer resources, and a language I do not speak. Getting around in this country would have been a frightening experience, indeed, except for a very big difference. My daughter and her family live there! Knowing the language and the country well, they were my tour guides. Whatever emergency arose, they knew how to handle it.

In the journey of life, God has given us both a travel agent and a tour guide. The Bible is our map book and we need to study it well to learn what paths to follow.

But God has also given us a tour guide in Jesus Christ. He is with us on the journey. He knows the way. No matter what emergency arises, He knows what to do. Trust him.

How do you decide what paths to follow? In what way do you use the Bible as your guide?

AND A GOOD MORNING TO YOU
Topic: Matthew 25:40

"The King will reply, I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me" Matthew 25:40

We sat at the cancer agency, my mom's emotional ability to cope with her illness already spent by 9:00 a.m. A gentleman approached my mom, bowed slightly and said, "And a good morning to you." With a smile he carried on his way.

His simple, powerful statement packed a two-point sermon into six words as he first acknowledged my mom and then encouraged her.

Where do your steps lead? Many times we are too busy to notice, never mind partake in another's emotional or physical pain. The incessant ring of cell phones, jam-packed calendars and the glare of computer screens win the war for our attention. Those squeaky wheels often first get greased.

Who or what do you acknowledge first in your life? Seeking God first will refine your priorities and your perspective. You will see Christ in the cancer patient, in your family, in the neighborhood or in the cubicle next to you at work.

Take a step in the right direction. Acknowledge the hurting; encourage them in the midst of their pain. Just start with this simple six-word blessing, "And a good morning to you."

Perhaps you've been uncomfortable around those who are hurting. How will you encourage them today?

God's Heart Hurt

Franklin Graham speaks about the judgment to come:

God judged…Noah’s day. He judged the inhabitants of the world at that time, because the heart was evil. And God was sad that He had created man. You see, it makes God’s heart hurt when He sees sin. He’s a holy God. He cannot tolerate sin. He could not tolerate it in Noah’s day, and cannot tolerate it in our day. But you see, God is a God of love. He loves you. He’s willing to forgive. He was willing to forgive in Noah’s day. A hundred and twenty years they had a chance to say, "God, we’ve sinned against you. We’re sorry." But they didn’t. Judgment’s coming. Are you reading to stand before God?

As Franklin Graham says, you can be ready to stand before a Holy God if you come to him through faith in Jesus Christ. Call the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, toll free, 877-2GRAHAM. Or click

FRESH OR RE-CIRCULATED WATER
Topic: John 4:14
"Anyone who drinks the water I give will never thirst-not ever. The water I give will be an artesian spring within, gushing fountains of endless life" John 4:14, The Message

The tall, exquisitely carved stone fountain burbled with water flowing from the top and then down over its three tiers. The fountain was firmly anchored in a round shallow pool where lights would illumine its beauty when the sky turned dark. On this sunny spring afternoon, swift breezes scattered droplets onto the surrounding sidewalk.

As I sat on a nearby stone bench enjoying the sights and sounds, I glanced at the rectangular bronze plaque fastened to the pool's low wall: Re-Circulated Water

Here in this semi-arid part of Colorado, we are water conscious. Grassy lawns are being replaced by drought-resistant plants. "Turn off faucet when brushing teeth" is a frequent caution. Re-circulating fountains are the norm.

As with the fountain, re-circulated water can refresh and provide beauty, but it is fresh water that we crave when desperately thirsty. Do I experience and give to others fresh or re-circulated water? If God's love and compassion are "new every morning," why do I so often share the blessings from past days and not what God whispered into my ears this morning?  Unlike the rapidly depleting underground pools of water in Colorado, God's supply of fresh water is available, accessible and abundant. Oswald Chambers writes, "Beware of harking back to what you were once when God wants you to be something you have never been." I might add that we must always be on the alert for the water we've never tasted before. Searching for fresh water is sometimes a process but always satisfying.

What "fresh water" have you experienced in recent days? What prevents us from searching for new springs?

JUST GETTING ALONG
Topic: 1 Corinthians 1:10
"I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought." 1 Corinthians 1:10

The Bible doesn't tell us "one anothers" to just get along with one another. Even the worst of enemies can bury their differences for a short time when it's beneficial for meeting a mutual goal.

But God, sending a note through our big brother, Paul, calls us to a higher standard than just getting along: "If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose" (Philippians 2:1-2).

Our testimonies are validated by how we get along with other believers -- that is, how we get along with one another in our congregations, our small groups, our choir rehearsals, our deacon/elder meetings, not to mention our families. Jesus says, "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:35).

Yet, love doesn't look much like love when it's accompanied by arguments and disputes and constant fighting. My spiritual mentor, Steve Pettit, notes this is perhaps the hardest aspect of authentic Christian fellowship -- because conflicts arise every time people are thrown together. Even a man and a woman who vow to love one another until "death do us part" can't always see eye-to-eye.

It's understandable, then, when a group of people who have nothing in common, except for the Jesus-life inside them, find it difficult to agree with one another all the time, perhaps even difficult to agree even one time.

What does this mean?

- Take your disputes to Jesus. We may have differing opinions, but on this one thing we must agree: Jesus is the head and his opinions are the only ones that matter (James 4:7). As we submit to Jesus, he will wash away our divisions and disputes with love that flows from the fountain of God.

- Agree to agree with Jesus. Has God brought to mind someone with whom you need to work out some differences? Instead of trying to make the other person agree with you, agree with God and submit to what God tells you to do. If God so leads, tell those on the other side of a conflict or dispute that you are willing to submit to the will of Jesus and encourage them to do the same.

Have you "disagreed" with Jesus lately, or with a close friend with whom you should try to reconcile?

HEAVEN
Topic: Colossians 1:5
"... the hope that is stored up for you in heaven ..." Colossians 1:5

Our hope in Christ for the future is the ultimate source of our joy here and now. This joy will set our hearts on fire to think of heaven, since all that we could ever want is promised there.

Here we are tired and run-down, but there lies the land of rest where the worker will no longer sweat with work, and fatigue will forever be banished. To those who are weary and spent, the word "rest" is full of heaven. We are always in the field of battle; we are so tempted within, and so tormented by enemies without, that we have little or no peace. But in heaven we will enjoy the victory, when the flag shall be waved high in triumph. The sword will be sheathed, and we shall hear our Lord say, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Here we may suffer sorrow after sorrow, but we are going to the land of the immortal where graves are unknown things. Here sin is a constant discouragement to us, but there we will be perfectly holy, for there will be no way for any impurity to enter into the kingdom. Death cannot flower among the heavenly fields.

Isn't it a wonderful truth that you are not to be banished forever, that you will not live eternally in the wilderness, but instead will soon inherit the beautiful promised land? Nevertheless, never think that we are dreaming about the future and forgetting the present! In fact, we should let our hope for the future help us to focus on the present.

Through the Spirit of God the hope of heaven is the most powerful force for development of virtue. It is a fountain of joyous effort and the cornerstone of cheerful holiness. Anyone who has this hope in them does their work with vigour, for the joy of the Lord is their strength. Such a person fights against temptation, for the hope of the next world repels the fiery darts of the devil. We can therefore labour even when we do not see immediate rewards, for we look forward to a reward in the world to come.

How do you imagine Heaven?

YOUR PATHS MADE PLAIN
Topic: Proverbs 3:5,6
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths"  Proverbs 3:5,6, KJV

A young seminary graduate came to see me while he was investigating various possibilities of Christian service. In particular, he had come to discuss the ministry of Campus Crusade.

"In what way do you expect God to reveal His place of service for you?" I asked him.

"I'm following the 'closed-door policy,'" he replied." A few months ago I began to investigate several opportunities for Christian service. The Lord has now closed the door on all but two, one of which is Campus Crusade. If the door to accept a call to a particular church closes, I'll know that God wants me in Campus Crusade."

Many sincere Christians follow this method - often with most unsatisfactory and frustrating results. God does sometimes use closed doors in the life of a Spirit-controlled Christian, as the apostle Paul experienced on different occasions, but generally one does not discover God's perfect will through a careless "hit-or-miss" attitude that ignores a careful evaluation of all the issues.

Such an approach is illogical because it allows elements of chance to influence a decision rather than a careful, intelligent, prayerful evaluation of all the factors involved. It is unscriptural in that it fails to employ the God-given faculties of reason that are controlled by the Holy Spirit.

Why not follow the "open-door policy" of Proverbs 3:5,6, trusting God for His clear direction? This is God's provision for supernatural living.

Do you need God's guidance in a particular area of your life? Have you asked Him to guide you?

BEWARE OF DECEPTION
Topic: 1 Corinthians 10:15

"You are reasonable people. Decide for yourselves if what I am saying is true." 1 Corinthians 10:15

Opening your email inbox, you notice a new email: From "Chief Oyinbolowo Eko" with the subject "REQUEST FOR AN URGENT BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP".

"Strange," you think to yourself, knowingly rolling your eyes, "I don't know a Chief Oyinbolowo Eko ... or any Chief at all, for that matter." Out of pure curiosity you open the email and read:

Greetings friend! I got your contact address through your country business directory and feel you will serve as a reliable source to be used to achieve our goal of transferring the estate of Miss Leslie Mushasha, by trusting under your care the total sum of Thirty million US dollars (US $30M).

Recognizing an obvious attempt at deception, you wisely delete the email and don't give it a second thought.

If it's so easy to recognize scams, why are people so often led astray by unbiblical and therefore Christ-dishonoring teaching? Jesus warned us many would try to deceive us: "Jesus said to them: "Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name, claiming, ?I am he,' and will deceive many. ... if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it."" (Mark 13:5-6,21)

Likewise, Paul warns us that many will try to deceive us, attempting to portray themselves as righteous: "Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve ... Even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!" (2 Corinthians 11:14-15, Galatians 1:8)

How can we guard against being deceived? Continually read God's word, hold tightly to the central truths of the faith, and do not uncritically trust the interpretations of any one person. There are many peripheral faith issues that Christians are free to disagree with, so we should not be too quick to dismiss other Christians whose views on certain issues differ from ours. But salvation issues (the core gospel) cannot be compromised. Keep your mind sharp so that you can calmly walk away from teaching that dishonors God by rejecting His revealed truth in His Word.

Have you been tricked or deceived in the past, and if so what did you learn from the experience?
